🔴LIVE 🔴Detroit Tigers VS Cleveland Guardians / September 23 /MLB THE SHOW 25
break just about set to go now. And today’s starting pitcher, Joey Kantio and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser. The ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. That one finds the corner and the count one and one. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. So, we’ll see what he brings in this one. Down the inside corner for a strike. Cut on and miss. Struck him out and now one away. Well, one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball that is coming in to let them know what the pitch is. And if they see the red dot, it’s typically a slider. But when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates, very difficult to determine and that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there. Just a nasty pitch. Glabber Torres up to the plate. That’s out to center field. Martinez under it. Two away. [Applause] Let’s take a check of the Tigers lineup. And Chris, this offense is facing a defense that is well known for kicking the ball around a bit. How aware are you offensively of a bad defensive team? Well, you’re not like completely aware because you’re really focusing on your approach, but I think when you know about a team and how they can be sloppy and as it plays out in a ball game, you’re more intent on saying with two strikes, I got to make sure that I put the ball in play because even if I don’t get a knock, there’s a chance they commit an error. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Tigers fail to make any noise. Now the Guardians will get their shot. Still scoreless. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back now at Progressive Field. Our starter in this one, Casey Mai. Chris, how about a scouting report? Well, that whip is just below the league average, and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win, and I expect to see that from him in this one today. Now, the left fielder, Steven Quan, and that one fouled off. Next offering is outside. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. That’s [Applause] inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit in the air. Right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. One away. Here’s the Guardians lineup now getting guys across the plate. not exactly a forte for them this year as their offense is in the bottom third of the league in runs scored. Boo, it becomes extremely frustrating and then what happens is guys press, especially in runcoring opportunities and situations. On top of that, I mean, you really make it harder on your pitcher. He feels like he’s got to be perfect to go out there and win a ball game or at least to put the team in a position to win a ball game. So, and they’ve got to figure out a way to relax, get those runners across when they have them on and especially when they’re in scoring position. Fast groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air. Maybe drive it into the gap. Two down, base is empty. Jose Ramirez digs in for the Guardians. Gets the call. That’s strike one. Two outs. Base is empty. That one outside. And the count is one and two. That’s inside. Got him. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Guardians fail to score. We played an inning, no score. Back here in Cleveland, here’s Riley Green. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. Back in Detroit, Kantio back to work. Green, 24 years old, a former first round pick back in 2019. Next offering is fouled back. The O2 swing and a miss for the strike out. He swung over top of the curveball. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. Spencer Torqulson, the next to hit, takes outside. Cleveland ripped to short tosses to first and they get Torqulson for the out. Batting six center fielder Wel Perez. Two outs. Base is empty. And up next for Detroit, Wel Perez off to a great start. But he’s really cruising out there on the mound. He’s got a chance to get through these first two innings with under 20 pitches. That could set him up to go deep into this game. And now the lefty just missed. No score here in the second. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Next pitch misses way outside. Dylan Dingler waiting to hit for Detroit. There’s the swinging a miss. [Applause] Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Two down. Dolman swinging a drive deep right field. And that’s a foul ball. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. And now the catcher comes up to him. Dylan Dingler, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. And first off is fouled off. Cleveland and it finds its way through for a hit. So that’s two straight two out hits. Back-to-back singles. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Stepping in, Zack McKinstry. That’s in there. And that is strike one. that crosses the plate and now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. Perez on second. Dingler on first with two down. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. [Applause] A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Here in Cleveland, bottom of the second, stepping in the long ball threat, Kyle Manzardo. He’s sort of your typical power hitter. wouldn’t necessarily call him a three true outcome guy, but he’s in there to hit home runs. Yeah, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Fans dig the long ball, bro. This one ripped, but fouled to the right. Hard ground ball. Base stop. Man aboard on the leadoff single. batting fifth catcher. Bo Naylor at the plate. Now, I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately, batting over 300 so far this month. And Chris, his big strength is defense. But it is interesting in today’s world of baseball compared to when you played, a good defensive catcher is considered differently. Whatever you get offensively is a bonus, but he’s got to put the fingers down. He’s got to present pitches to the umpire. They’re going to help his pitcher get more strikes. I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page. And that’s something that this guy does really well. Gets in sync with his pitchers. Boo. His preparation is off the charts. I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit. He’s so buried in that video room. It’s hard to get a chance to talk to him. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. for hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely. But you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after him. And now the shorts stop. Gabrielle Arias in there for strike one. That one fouled off. The shorts stop takes a ball. Man at first, one away. Next pitch is outside and it’s two and two. Fast ball is outside. [Applause] Swing and a high-fly ball left field. And there’s two down. Batting seven, center fielder on Martinez. And up next for Cleveland, Anel Martinez [Applause] and ball one. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. First and second, two outs. So in now for Cleveland, CJ Cus. Ball one there. Two on, two outs. And that one fouled off. Two outs, couple of base runners at first and second. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Back foot slider struck him out. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. And we’re back. Well, here we go. Top of the third. Scoreless game. The batter now, Javier Bayz. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. just missed. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Elago goes down on strikes here. You usually are going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Swung on, popped up left side. Ramirez makes the grab and there’s two gone. Man, he just couldn’t lay off right there. Those high fast balls, they just look really good because they’re eye level, but they’re just about impossible to get the barrel to. Here is Glabber Torres. Fly to center his first time. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Cleveland and another ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. Nasty two- slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. way out front for strike two and it remains two and two. Top of the third, no score. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swing and a line drive ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Now batting Harry Carpenter up now for the Tigers. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And there’s the strike. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. Torres leads off first with two down to the inning and a foul ball. He stays alive. Here’s a one-two cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. One hit, one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. Here’s Brian Rochio. Roio swing and a tapper that rolls foul. And that misses. And the count is one and one. That’s down and in. [Applause] Not even close there. And now three balls and a strike. [Applause] It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahead run. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Here’s the left fielder. Steven Quan flyed to right his first time. Runner on the move right side to He takes it on his own. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Valera now in the box. Comes up empty with a swing there. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. Gets under and pops it up. Bayz puts it away for the out. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. And here is Jose Ramirez caught looking his first time up. swings through that one. 0 and one. Oh, strike one is so critical in a bat like this with a real threat at the plate looking to do damage out towards right center. That’s well struck back there. That one is gone. [Applause] That should put a jolt into this home crowd. And just like that, they’re out front. It’s two nothing. Two pitches, two swings. That one for a home run. Looking to be aggressive all the way. And it paid off for him in a big way. [Applause] That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. [Applause] So two away with nobody on. Here’s a big power threat. Kyle Manzardo and the slider catches the zone. Way high there. Going to count one and two. And that’s a little high. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And there’s a ball. in the air pretty deep out to center field. Perez under it and that’s the inning. Jose Ramirez with a homer here. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back now at Progressive Field. Start of the fourth. Now the left fielder Riley Green taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, these Tigers just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations and that’s been true again today. Quan makes the grab. One down. And as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand. Cleveland Torqulson takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. One out, base is empty. Cleveland, you think back to 2017 and Cleveland set a major league record. 22 consecutive wins they had. It was capped off with a 10 in walk-off win. Pretty amazing streak and a big part of the history of this yard. Hit hard on the ground to the right side and that’s just foul. Come on. One down. Base is empty. Foul ball. Another two upcoming. Boo. And I remember early in that season covering them and talking to their staff and players and they didn’t feel like they had really clicked yet. Now, when I went back to do some research, looking at metrics like base runs, I realized they weren’t scoring runs at the rate in which the data was saying they should be at. So, the numbers were saying it was just a matter of time until they would take off. Little did we know that it would convert into a 22game winning streak, and it took the baseball world by storm. I love when you talk nerd to me. Perez in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Fair ball. Around first, digging for two. The throw into second. Not in time. He’s safe. Now batting catcher Dylan Zingler. Here’s the catcher, Dylan Dingler. One for one with a single so far. Hit pretty well in the air out to center. Martinez has a beat on it. makes the catch and that is that one left for Detroit. They trail things here two nothing back here in Cleveland ready to go bottom four and here’s the catcher Bone Naylor All right sing trivia time back when this ballpark opened 1994 one future Hall of Famer hit the first triple in the park and another hit the first homer by a Cleveland player. Think you know who they were? Okay, I know that Ken Griffy Jr. hit the first triple here, but first homer for Cleveland. Give me a hint. Switch hitter. That’s all you’re getting. Oh, dude. Eddie Murray, no doubt. Bam. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That one just missing inside. Counts full. Three and two. On the ground right side in plenty of time to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Now batting the short stop, Gabrielle. So digging in, Gabrielle Arias flyed to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. The shorts stop takes a ball. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. swing and a miss. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. That misses the zone and that’s ball two. Slider misses outside. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. and he knew right away it was an off-feed pitch. Out to short. Bayz fires over to first. Already two gone here in the home fourth. Now batting center fielder on Martinez. Two down base is empty. Anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians. A single his first time. And that one fouled off. And a foul ball. And that just misses. He missed the zone, but I don’t think he missed his spot. That was a good pitch with two strikes. That’s outside and the count is two and two. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball swings through that and it’s a strikeout. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. The Guardians go down in order. They’re up two nothing. here in Cleveland. Top five, John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Zack McKinstry. Let’s go Cleveland Kantio back to work and a good fast ball to start him off at strike one. Well, these Tigers need to bring up the quality of their at bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. Reaching for it, makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Elago coming to the dish. His first at bat was a strike out. And that drops in for a strike. Bayz in his 10th season, 32 years old, and he was born in Puerto Rico. On the ground to the left, Arius. slings to first. Bayz going in the play. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Back to the top of the Detroit order. And next up for the Tigers, Parker Meadows for two in this one. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. And that’s in for a strike. Looking sharp just a strike away from five shut out innings. The Tigers trailing by two and we’re at the top of the fifth. [Music] There’s a swing and a drive. can’t get to it as it drops into the corner and that’s a two out double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So, runner at second, two down. And next to hit for Detroit, Glabbert Torres. Little bit high. One and0. Meadows on at second with two down. Outside corner for a strike. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. That’s off the inside corner. Two and one. Let’s go. Swing and a highf fly ball. Pretty well struck right field. That one back and that ball is out of here. His 17th of the year. It’s 2-2. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Carrie Carpenter now at the plate. First pitch misses. Two outs. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Just missed. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. [Music] [Applause] fouled off again and it remains three and two. Two down on and that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. Detroit adds two on this homer and we’re deadlocked now at two a piece. You’re dialed into the show. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the right fielder CJ Cus3. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. You know, these Guardians doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. The starter pitch count is high because they’ve worked the count full against him five different times. Their pitch selection’s been off the charts today. The 1-1 is fouled off. Hit in the air center field. Paris gets under it. hauls it in for the out. Now batting Brian Rochio digs in for the Guardians. He walked and came around to score his first time up. [Applause] In the air out towards left center. They got it for out number two. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind swirling around out there. Back to the top of the lineup, stepping up for the Guardians. Steven Quan. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone and there’s a foul ball. All tied up. Last half of inning number five. Right through there for a strike. That one inside. Look out. Still two and two after the foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. out to center. Perez settles under it and makes the catch. And that is the third out of the inning through five. All even at 22. So they turn to the lefty in this spot, Logan Allen. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Here’s the left fielder, Riley Green in the zone for a strike. That was the sweeper. Cleveland has some action going in their pen. Matt Festa getting ready to go. Haron, the power lefty up as well. popped up left side. Ramirez [Applause] calls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Tigers, first base Spencer Torlson. Spencer Torqulson getting ready to hit. That one missed. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. Fast ball for a strike. Pitch misses there and it’s two and one. [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. Goes down looking. Now digging in is the switch in outfielder Wel Perez. Swing and a fly ball well struck left field. Quan makes the catch and that is that. Offense held in check there. 234 do up in the home half of the sixth. We are tied 2-2. And we’re back. Bottom of the six. Now it’s the Guardians DH. George Valera. Ball one and a pitch inside. Tigers bullpen with some action. Tanner Rainey getting loose out there. Holton also throwing. Outside low and a count now two and nothing. Just missed [Applause] in there at the knees and the count is three and one. popped up. Bias should have this one. Hauls it in for the out. Up next for the Guardians. Third base. AJ Hinch makes another pitching change. Casey M is done and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Chris Paddock. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Here’s Jose Ramirez. He’s already homerred in this game. way inside. Well, a mistake right here could untie this ball game if you’re the pitcher out there. You just want to be a little more cautious. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball two. One more. Let’s go. [Applause] and a four pitch walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. So, next will be the fourhole hitter for the Guardians, Kyle Manzardo. One for two. [Applause] fast ball for a strike. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. got him swinging. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Nailer. So, two down now and here is Bo Naylor. That misses ball one with a go ahead run at first here in the bottom of the sixth. check swing and he went and a count one and one strike runner takes off pitch in for a strike. Transfer bobbled and there’s no throw. Ruer at second. Two down. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Next one just misses. And now two balls and two strikes and a curve misses outside. Gabrielle Arias in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Man on second, two down. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. man at second. Hard on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nicely done from the Tigers bullpen there. Seventh inning coming up. We are tied 2-2. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Matt Festa. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. And now the catcher comes up to him. Dylan Dingler. Dylan Dingler. Let’s go Cleveland fought off foul Cleveland. And that’s through there for a strike. And the count is 0 and2. this to third. Ramirez tosses across to first. One up, one down. Now batting third base, Zack McKinstry. Zack McKinstry up now for the Tigers. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. Going back and caught on the warning track. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Here’s Bayz. The shorts stop takes the ball. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. And that one is inside. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Up and in. And now three and one. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. line drive lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw and they can’t get the out. Now batting designated hitter Parker Meadows. Go ahead run on base. Next is the designated hitter Parker Meadows. One for three in there at the knees. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Two outs and ball one. Checks his swing. Appeal to third and he went, says Larry Bullard. Two gone. The possible go-ahead run at first. Ground ball right side. Throws to first in time. That’s out number three. Tigers leave one. Score remains 2-2. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Tanner Rainey. Tanner Rainey. So in now for Cleveland. Gabrielle Arias the short stop Gabrielle Arias close one doesn’t get the call and that’s ball one. Well I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. And the one fouled off. He was late. Let’s go. That’s to third. Throw on to Torqulson and one away in the bottom of the seventh. Up next for the Guardians, center fielder. Now at the plate, Anel Martinez. missed with a change up and that is ball one. Foul ball there. All tied up here in the bottom of the seventh. And there’s a ball. [Applause] Let’s go. Next offering is fouled back. Let’s go Cleveland. Two- two now. Gets a piece and stays alive. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Boo. I’m not sure how he took that right there. I mean, that was an incredible two- strike pitch. Outside and that is ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Hayus in the box now. Takes strike one. Swing in a ball line to center. Base hit. And they have their first hit since the third inning. And the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Well, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field. Everything was on time. He stayed balanced through the entire swing and just launched that one into center. Now, a good opportunity to potentially jump ahead in this game here in the later innings. Go ahead run is a third. Rochio will hit next and delivers outside. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Here goes the runner. Swing. Get a ball popped up. Bayz. Two down. Now batting left fielder Steven Quan. Steven Quan stepping in now for a critical at bat. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Martinez the runner at third. Cus at first. Two out of the inning. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and we stay tied as the inning ends. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Tim Harren gets an opportunity to square off against his former team, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. Here’s Glabber Torres. He’s already homerred here in this one. Lever Torres. That one finds the zone. Go and one. Action in the pen down there. Cade Smith up and loosening in the pen. swing and a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they have the lead. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 3-2. The brighter the lights, the more he shines. Yeah, this guy lives for big moments. right there made a statement big time. No doubt in my mind, just about everybody in this ballpark holding their breath on that one, I tell you. Just barely snuck it inside the foul pole. And talk about a huge swing. That’s it in this ball game. Could be the biggest swing of this ball game. We’ll see. And now Carrie Carpenter. One, no strike. Nope. That’s inside. that misses the zone. They’re now 3 and 0. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. There’s a strike. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Right side hard hit. steps out first for the out. Up next for the Tigers, left fielder Riley Green. Riley Green digs in now. 0 for three in this one. Splits the plate. That’s strike one. Oh, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. Ouch. That one drilled him. Still able to get it there in time. And they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. Definitely some concern here. That ball came back and got him right on the pitching arm as you can see him trying to shake it off. And if nothing else, you worry about him getting some dead arm and losing some feeling. But from what I can tell, I think they’re going to let him continue. And that’s a really good sign. Two outs. Base is empty. Spencer Torqulson now at the plate. That’s a strike. And it’s 0 and one. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. That one inside. And it’s one and one. And a liner out into right center for a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Boo. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. And up next for Detroit, Wensil Perez. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Throw in holds the lead. Runner at second. Two on now with two away. Dylan. Dylan Dingler getting ready to hit. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. You come into the game knowing that unless the ball’s in the dirt or gets by him, we’re probably not going to steal anything today. So, that’s where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits, some slog, some home runs can come into play. The one and that is out of play. Two on, two outs in the air. right field. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. [Applause] Caught him looking for the K. One run in the inning, but they leave two. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Tigers three and the Guardians two. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Holton, left-handed batter at the plate. And he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Well, one-run game. Now the number two hitter, George Valera. Valer [Music] shortened a bunt and missed it. It’s 0 and one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Ball one there. Activity in the bullpen for Detroit. Will Vest getting loose for AJ Hinch. [Applause] Next one misses. Two balls, two strikes. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Come on. Looking to get the tying run on base. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. popped up to the left into foul ground. Makes the grab and there’s one away. Now batting third base, Jose. Now it’s Jose Ramirez, known for his late inning heroics. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Pitch misses inside. One and0. Holding on to a one-run lead near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Inside two and 0. They get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. One down, base is empty. Kyle Manzardo in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Out front. Pulls that one foul. Now it’s three and two. You got this. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Well, we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the bullpen is following suit. It’s just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Kyle Manzardo. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. And that’s off the inside edge. And it’s one and0. Let’s go. That’s in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Get count. Hard ground ball base knock. And the tying run is on base. [Applause] Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Bone Naylor digs in for the Guardians. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And that’s downed away. Well, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. Manardo off of first with two away. Clips the corner and the count even at one. just missed. That one missed. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. Gabrielle Arias in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two outs and ball four, two aboard. Not what he wanted to do there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Tyler Holton gives way and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Will Vest. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. So, the tying run in scoring position now. Arius will hit next. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Lined and that’s a base hit. runner around third on his way to the plate. Safe back even. It’s 33. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. So the go-ahead run is into scoring position. Martinez the next to hit [Applause] and that drops in for a strike. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. First and second, two down on the ground to third. McKinstry. They get the force and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over, but the RBI single pushes across a run. We’re tied now with three a piece. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Kate Smith. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Here’s the third baseman, Zack McKinstry, 0 for three with two flyyous and a strikeout. That pitch in for a strike. 0 and one. Yeah, that’s a little high. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Check swing. Cold strike. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. In the air, left field, down the line, and it’s out of play. A foul ball. [Applause] off the plate inside. Two balls, two strikes to count. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Smoked on the ground to second. Tosses to first now. One gone in the ninth. Now batting shortstop Javier Bayz. So here’s Bayz now. Cleveland. Just missed. cut on and lifted in the air. Arius and there’s two away. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. And now the DH Parker Meadows one for four with a double trying to keep good speed off the bases. [Applause] That was the sweeper, but it missed. That catches the top part of the zone and it’s one and two. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Three up, three down for him there. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. All tied up at three apiece. So bottom of the ninth, stepping up for the Guardians, CJ Cus Vest back to work. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Little chopper rolls foul. [Music] Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. No, that’s not the best two strike fast ball I’ve seen, but certainly got away with the location there. You know, sometimes as a hitter when you’re down in the count, you’re so focused on a pitcher painting the black and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the heart of the plate, not expecting it, and it just kind of freezes you. Brian Rochio digs in for the Guardians. There’s the strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Base is empty, one away. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Steven Quan digs in for the Guardians. 0 for four. Couple of fly outs. He’s also grounded out and struck out. Pitch misses. Ball one. [Applause] Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. Pitch is in there and the count one and two. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Carpenter moving under it. Makes the catch and over. leading off. Here comes Glabber Torres. He’s got a couple homers already. So, can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit, and he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. [Music] in the dirt. And an excellent job keeping it right there. Fly ball down the line and that is fouled. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit, it’s probably going to be a big run. So, you really have swang at a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. The run comes in from second and they lead it in the 10th and he’s got a double. His fourth hit. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Carpenter digs in now. 0 for four. Two strikeouts and two ground outs. That one ripped. It’s a bomb. [Music] He nails one out to right. Dicks three. One swing, one home run. Yeah, you could say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact there. He got a splitter that he was able to handle. Allowed that pitch to travel a little bit deeper and when it was time to commit, his hands exploded through the zone. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the Guardians bullpen. Cade Smith won’t go any further. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So, Cleveland brings on a new reliever, Eric Sabrowski, bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Riley Green now at the plate. Swang and a miss and it’s 0 and one. Nobody out with three runs in already this frame here in the top half of the 10th. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. Now batting the first base, Spencer. Man at first, nobody out. And now the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. There’s the strike. [Applause] [Applause] He swings and fouls one off. That one way inside. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you can get hurt. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Green on at first. Nobody out. Battling here as he fouls it away. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Cracks his bat and pops him off. Makes the grab. One away. Up next for the Tigers, center fielder Wel Perez. Wel Perez up now for the Tigers. A switch hitter batting right. And that one hammered. This one’s got a chance. And that gets down in the corner. Green around third. The throws offline. He’s safe. It’s seven to three. Waste no time there. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside. Saw it deep into the zone and just barreled it up. went the other way for the knock. Dylan Dingler getting ready to hit. That’s in for a strike. Four runs already in the frame here in extra innings. Had a breaking ball misses outside comes up empty. That’s strike two. And that’s downstairs and outside. That misses. Three and two now. and ball four to a board. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the Guardians bullpen. Eric Sabrowski won’t go any further tonight and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. The Guardians going with a new pitcher, Slade Sakone. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. First and second, one out. Mckinstre the next to hit. And first offering is fouled off. Just missed. Swing and a miss. One out. Runners at first and second. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Good job to fight that one off. And they’ll do it again. Runners at first and second with one gone. And here in extra innings. bows it off. Still one and two. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s some times where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single. ripped into right center and that should be extra bases. One run across. Here comes Dingler around third. The relay in there safely. That’s a good job right there. You got two strikes on you. Just got to battle. Javi Bayz digs in right side in the air fairly deep to right field. Squeezes it. Runner tags from third. It’s a sack fly as he comes across to score. And they’re pulling away up by seven now. And there’s a sack fly to bring home another run in this inning. These hitters are just piling it on. We’re seeing some really quality at bats out of this team right now. Meadows in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Activity in the bullpen. Colobby Allard appears to be getting loose. Bybeby getting loose as well. sliced hard but foul. Two down, nobody on out to short. Arius whips it to first on the run. It’s there and that’s a great play, but they take the lead on a huge sevenrun outburst. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. Tigers 10 and the Guardians three. And welcome back to the ballpark. We’re in extras here. Now it’s the Guardians DH. George Valera. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. and one swing and a popup in foul ground and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. Swanging a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Nabs it. Grounder tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Jose Ramirez digs in for the Guardians. The goal is to give your teammate a chance to score from third. There’s a few ways he can get it done, but his best chance is to drive one in the air. Look for the right pitch up and then smoke it. Swings through that. just threw that fast ball by him, elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. And that misses one ball, one strike. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up, that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield, and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Line drive and that should be extra bases. In comes the run from third to trim the lead. Oh, the throw is over his head and he’ll pull into second safely. Picks himself up an RBI. He put a great swing on that ball. Took the barrel right to it. Nice extension as well. 105 exit velocity. That tells you everything you need to know about that swing. Kyle Manzardo digs in for the Guardians. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off man at second. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. fights it off. He’ll see another [Applause] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. And ball one, one out and a runner at second. And we’re in the last half of the 10th. Struck him out looking. And the Guardians with one out left. I’m not saying it it wasn’t a strike or, you know, it was a ball, whatever, but just the location with that velocity. It’s hard enough even if the velocity is not great, but that velocity, that location, tip your cap. Last out for the Guardians in this one at the play. Bone nailer. Strike on the inside corner. One’s the count. Tap foul at the plate. Ramirez stands at second with two gone. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this is a big win on the road and going extras into 10. Uh, so hard to pull those out, but I think this team did a great job of keeping the crowd out of the ball game late. When you can do that, it kind of calms everything down, keeps the adrenaline of the opposing team down a bit, and you can steal a win and get out of here happy. 104 is how it ends. Roger Dodger, ground beef control. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
