🔴LIVE 🔴Pittsburgh Pirates vs Cincinnati Reds/ September 23/ Baseball Envivo/ /MLB THE SHOW 25

Park City steeped in baseball history. MLB the show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the Pittsburgh Pirates going up against the Cincinnati Reds. John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. Well, Singy, when you consider the top hitters ballparks in the sport, this has got to be one of them. I’ll say this, pitchers have to stay with their game. They can’t look over their shoulder and think, I have to be fine and perfect on every pitch. Continue to pitch to your strengths and you’ll come out of here with a good outing. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. All right, just about ready for baseball and today on the hill, Andrew Abbott. What’s the word on him? Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable, and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. O’Neal Cruz leading things off and takes a strike. Swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball just outside. Yeah, the count one and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. chases the fast ball up the ladder. Struck him out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone. But that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. And first offering is fouled off. One out. Base is empty. Strike two. Swing and a line drive. And that one’s a base hit out of left center field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Batting third. Ryan Reynolds here. Ryan so clutch. You could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. Outside low. Ball one. And another ball. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play. But in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Two and0 to count. Here it comes. Tapped softly on the ground and it goes just foul. And that drops in for a strike. Just missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And that’s a base hit. The throw to third in there safely. Two consecutive base hits for this team. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity right on top of it. Two on, one out. Spencer Horowitz will hit next. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch that’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. [Applause] Two on, one out. Pitch misses and the count is one and two. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. [Music] up and in. And that’s ball two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Huge strike out there. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. that crosses the plate and now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. Strike it out. That’s off the mark. And a count one and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. First inning and already up to 23 pitches. Bows it off. Still one and two. [Music] And a pitch. Cuts goes down via the K. Oh, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. back here in Cincinnati. Today’s starting pitcher, Mike Burroughs. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. a lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. TJ Fredel, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. The one [Applause] [Music] right side McCutchen. Are you kidding me? One down. Come on. Come on. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. This is an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah. Sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press. They try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Come on, Gavin. Gavin Lux stands in now and watches strike one. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Two outs, space is empty, and here is Noelv Marte in there. And it’s 0 and one. Two out. Space is empty. And that one misses up and in. And now it’s even one and one. hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning alive, man. Those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Spencer Steer in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Music] That’s to third. Triolo. They take the force out and that is the third out of the inning. So, one left for Cincinnati. Scoreless after one. Second inning, set to go. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Nick Gonzalez. Abbott back to work. That’s a little bit low. That’s down and in. Ed Drummond, our umpire behind the plate in this one. Yeah, Buie’s a really fair umpire, both the pitchers and the hitters. So, standard strike zone, he’s consistent with it. And the great thing is you don’t see players question the calls too much. So, that’s a good thing in this day and age. The next pitch misses, three balls, no strikes. in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. That’ll fire up the dugout. It’s his sixth home run of the season. And they jump ahead in the second. It’s one- nothing. He ran the count full and saved his best swing for last. That was a battle and he won. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Now the left fielder Jack Sinski and there’s a foul ball. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top of the second. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. This is Joey Bart. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one. That’s in there. And that is strike one. Bard 28 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season. One down. Base is empty. Bart tries to hold up appeal to first and he went around according to Clyde Washington. Nick York the next pirate to hit right through there for a strike. [Music] Two down to foul ball there. Battling here as he fouls it away. That’s ripped. Base hit and that extends the inning. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. His first at bat was a strikeout. York leads off first with two down to the inning. up and in and it’s one and two. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch. Bells that off to the left and we’ll do it again. Two outs. Stays alive. Hammers that one. Curling down the line and foul. That ball’s foul. [Music] Ball two. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Fredel has a beat on it. And that is that. [Applause] Pirates draw first blood on the solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the inning and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Will Benson Benson [Applause] swaying and a miss. There’s the slider. It’s 0 and one and a quick out number one. Batting six, the short stop, Ellie. And the batter will be the shortstop, Ellie Dea Cruz. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. [Applause] fast ball for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That one is absolutely belted and that gets down in the corner around first and hustling for second and he’s in with a standup double. Put a very nice swing on that pitch right there. got one to drive and just kept it fair down that right field line and into the corner. And it’s almost impossible to track those down as an outfielder. Now batting Key Brian Hayes, good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Breaking ball misses down and away. One out and a runner at second. Bottom half of inning number two. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Now just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Well struck left field. It’s a bomb. And just like that they’re out front. It’s 2-1. [Applause] Oh yeah. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Slice down the right side. [Music] And that drops in for a strike. Ground ball right side and he handles it himself for the out. Batting ninth second base Matt Mlan two down base is empty in now for the Reds. Matt Mlan and first offering is fouled off and ball one and a foul. Foul ball the one two struck him out swinging went back to the slider and it was a good idea. Cincinnati plates a pair on this homer and this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show back here at Great American Ballpark. Onto the third inning at the plate for Pittsburgh. Jared Triolo. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. And that misses and the count even one and one. You know, these Pirates doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. Over to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. So, Singy, a close play at first, worthy of another look with Stackcast. That was an absolute heater. And you just don’t see that type of velocity coming across the diamond every day. Only the best infield arms in baseball reach 90 mph and he needed all of it to get that out. Bang bang play. Brian Reynolds the next pirate to hit. Swing and that ball smashed on a line. Marte balls it in. Two away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. or nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. So, the inning still alive with Andrew McCutchen coming to the dish. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know they used to say charge it crazy. Here’s McCutchen. Fouled off down the right side. Yeah, that’s fouled off. The pitch to McCutchen. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Though Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. That one almost got him. Sit him down. Two outs. Tap back to the mound to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. What was that? Now batting shortstop Nick Gonzalez. Nick Gonzalez the next pirate to hit. He’s already homered here in this one. And that’s too high. Come on. You can do it. Come on. Two on, two outs. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Man, I’m pretty impressed out there on the mound right now. I mean, these are tough spots where pitchers really got to bear down. Those last two pitches were well executed. Just misses. Two and two. evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So, he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire and he felt this was his time. Swing and a miss. And that is that. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. And we’re back as we go to the last of the third. And now the center fielder TJ Fredo Fredle. This one smoked could be trouble around first. Digging for two. Throws to second and he’s got a leadoff double. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now it’s Gavin Lux. Struck out swinging his first time. Let’s go Reds. Come on Reds. You can do it. Fouled off left side. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the last half of the third. Cincinnati. And that’s down and away. [Applause] [Music] Man at second and a curve is down and in. What a stop. Throw to first in time. Got him. Great cat-like reflexes right there. lays out, knocks the ball down, and then fires with that rocket arm all the way across the diamond. Man, put this guy on the mound. Now it’s the right fielder, Noel V. Marte, one for one with a single so far. That one finds the zone. Strike one. One out and a runner at second. That one lifted to left. Sinsky gets under it. Hauls it in for the good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay close. Basement Spencer Steer. Spencer Steer getting ready to hit. He’s 0 for one. All right. [Applause] And the pitch is outside. Ball one. [Applause] Late swing fouled off. And this one squirts away from the catcher. Fredel up to third on the wild pitch. He just hasn’t had it in this one. Been fighting himself out there. And that’s just another example of it. We’ll see if he can find it at all while he’s still out there. Fredel at third with two away. And a two-1 hammered but foul. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. In the dirt and now it’s three and two. Will Benson on deck for Cincinnati. [Music] Got him. Andy’s registered three Ks in this one. So they work around the leadoff double. On to inning number four. It’s the Reds two and the Pirates one. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shambi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Jack Sinski. Come on. Get out of here. Outside low and it’s one and0. just missed. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Misses inside and it’s three and0. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. [Music] That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Here’s Joey Bart now. Struck out swinging his first time. Late swing fouled off. Tying run is at first. Top half of inning number four. Missed with a change up. One ball, one strike. Way to lay off that pitch down. Step off throw to first. Sinsky back in on a dive. And a count. One and two. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. ripped on a line and it’s gone. He muscles that one out of here. Home run number five on the season and the Pirates take the lead. It’s 3-2. Well, the best home runs are the ones that give your team the lead. That’s a great feeling right there. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Now here is Nick York. Swing and a base hit. And that turns the lineup over. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field. Everything was on time. He stayed balanced through the entire swing and just launched that one into center. Back to the top of the lineup. And now the Pirates leadoff man, O’Neal Cruz, grounded to third. Could be two. There’s one. And that’s two. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. [Applause] Now the number two hitter Jared Triolo. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. [Music] Swing and a miss and it’s 0 and2. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Hunter Green up and throwing for Terry Francona. Sudter the lefty warming up as well. Two down. Nobody on. Cut on and lifted in the air. Benson turns to the right on the move. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that. Another look at this two-run homer for Pittsburgh. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Cincinnati. Bottom of the fourth. Here’s the left fielder, Will Benson. Benson. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Well, these Reds just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. That pitch in for a strike. And the count is 0 and2. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. There’s a high chopper and he beats the throw. Shows off the wheels right there. An infield single. It was a healthy cut, but the same can’t be said for the contact. He got just enough of the ball to put it in play, and that’s all he needed. Tough play for the defense on what was kind of a swinging bunt. Ellie Dea Cruz, the next to hit for the Reds. One for one with a double and a run scored. And there’s a ball. Benson aboard here at first with nobody out. That one ripped but foul. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. Grounder might be two. Tosses to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Now batting third base. Next for Cincinnati, Key Brian Hayes. He’s already homered in this game. In for a strike. Good slider. Inside. Move to second. Benson dives back in safely. [Music] Man at second. This one in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. lined and that’s a base hit. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. It’s 33. Comes through with the RBI. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. One down. Here’s Jos Trevinho 0 for one. grounded out to first his last time. And that one clips the corner. Oh, and one. Close but called a ball. And it’s one and one. upstairs. We got two balls, one strike. Fouls one off. Two and two. Next offering popped in the air right field drops into the glove. Two down. Matt Mlan the next to hit. He was a strikeout victim his first time. at Mlan breaking ball through there for a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Two outs. Foul ball still 0 and two. [Music] and a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. They get a run on, two hits, no errors, and a man left. We’re headed to the fifth. All tied up at three apiece. Back here at Great American Ballpark, Dray coming to the plate now. Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds in his sixth season, 30 years old now. And he’s usually in the outfield. Today he’s the DH, a little bit high. And that’s ball one. You know, these pirates digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve launched six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. There’s the strike. They’re now three in one. [Applause] Let’s go. Next offering is fouled back and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Up next for the Pirates, Spencer Horowitz, one for two. And a foul ball. Swang at a high-fly ball. Well struck. That’s back there. And out of here. That’s one way to quiet the crowd. Home run number 10 on the year and it gives them the lead in the fifth. It’s 4-3. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Andrew Abbott won’t go any further tonight and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, a new arm out of the bullpen for the Reds. Hunter Green. Big swing and miss stuff right here. Boo. Averaging more than one strike out per inning this season. So far, he’s been pretty electric. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One out. Base is empty and a run in. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Just missed. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Misses inside. Ball three. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. One down, base is empty. He swings and fouls one off. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and there’s two down. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Nick Gonzalez. Nick Gonzalez. Highf fly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball one. Swang get a ball popped up. Mlan settles under it and he makes the catch and that’ll do it. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth now. Here’s the Red’s leadoff man, TJ Fredle. Fredel Burroughs back to work liner and this could be trouble and it’s off the wall. Here’s the throw and now the tying run is into scoring position. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Lux digs in now. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Next pitch is outside. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Paul Ste loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Chandler also throwing. Next offering is in for a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Fredel leads off second with nobody out. [Applause] Strike three. Got him swinging now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Noelv Marte. Fast for a strike. the 01 right through there for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole, he’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. [Applause] Strike three and that’s two in a row. So backto back strikeouts now and they still haven’t managed to do anything with the leadoff double. Yeah, Boo. And you just don’t want to get careless here. You’ve done a really good job to get two outs after that leadoff doubled as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it’s a non-issue. Derek Shelton out of the dugout and he will make the move. Mike Burroughs won’t go any further. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. Now pitching on the mound now for the Pirates. Paul Ste and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Spencer Steer the next to hit for the Reds. Swings through that one. 0 and one. 0 and one check swing called strike. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they are creeping into my mind right now. Squirts away a little bit and the runner holds. Rudder at second. Two down. Last half of inning number five. Misses. Two and two. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. [Applause] And he hits a ground ball right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. and he’s going to make it to first and we’ll see how they score it. Looked to me like he kind of let the ball play him instead of playing the ball and it just a him off. Hands get stiff and even the best infielders make these kinds of mistakes. You just have to learn from it and move on. So two outs with runners on the corners. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. swings through that. Runners at the corners with two outs and fouled off. [Music] bows it back with two strikes. Strikes him out with 101. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. And we’re back now. It’s going to be Jack Sinski. Jack Sinski. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Power relievers one after another coming out of the bullpen these days. Got to be ready for that first pitch heater. Next offering is fouled back. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. One ball, two strikes. And that one in the air center field. Fredel should have this one and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one away. Now batting catcher Joey Bart. And here’s the catcher Joey Bart. He had a big swing back in the fourth. A two-run homer and that helped them get the lead. And what a swing it was. Boo. Poetry in motion. And those are the type that you hardly feel when you connect with the baseball. Just so smooth. A great feeling off the bat. headed towards the corner. This looks like extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Now batting second baseman Nick York at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick York. He’s two for two. That’s a swinging a foul out of play. Come on. That one finds the zone and that’s strike two. One out and a runner at second and we’re in the top half of the sixth. [Applause] That misses and that is ball one. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. And that one off the outside edge. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. And misses inside. Bart leads off second with one gone in the inning. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. That’s to third. Hayes to first. And now two gone. Now batting center fielder O’Neal Cruz. So the lineup flips over. O’Neal Cruz the next Pirate to hit. 0 for three in this one. Cincinnati. That one a triple digits. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Ruer at second. Two down. Tap foul at the plate. Man on second, two down. Good eye in that spot. Come on, punch him out. Swinging a ground ball up the middle on the run. throw to first. Got him. A beautiful play to end the inning. One hit, one left. 6782 in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Pirates four and the Reds three. And welcome back to the ballpark. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop, Ellie Dea Cruz. Cruz. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list and a swing and a miss. Yeah, we go beyond just, you know, fielding percentage and you know what it looks like, but the ability to have range and you know close holes that you know are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. got him swinging. Very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner when with two strikes you just struggle to put the ball in play. You don’t even have to get a hit at that point. You can help your team just by reaching on an error, but some way you got to find a way to shorten up the swing and put the ball in play next time. Key Brian Hayes the next to hit for the Reds. Fast ball for a strike. Boo. And the one thing about that is speed never goes into slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Ground ball up the middle. Fires to first on the run on the money. Nice play. Now batting catcher Jose. Here’s the Red’s catcher Jose Trovinho. 0 for two in this one. Back outside [Applause] in the air right field. [Applause] McCutchen makes the grab and that’s the inning. New pitcher now, Scott Barlo. And he’s had a really hard time throwing strikes so far this season. His walk rate is up there among the worst in the league for relievers. Scott Barlo. Well, one-run game. Here’s the third baseman. Jared Triolo, one for three. Let’s go. Come on. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Nick Martinez, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Phillips getting cranked up as well. Swing and a miss. 0 and two now. Got him. And one away. Well, take a look at the three- pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. So, digging in, Brian Reynolds. That’s a ball tried to attack with a sweeper. There’s the strike. swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. He’s got it and there’s two away. Now batting the first base. Next, it’s the Pirates cleanup hitter Spencer Horowitz. It was a homer for him back in the fifth. Just a solo shot, but an important swing in this game. Yeah, and it was a beautiful swing as well. Everything just came together timing wise and he blasted it out of here. That one not close. Ball one. Late with the swing there. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Next offering is in for a strike. Spoils the two strike pitch and he’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that one got a piece of him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Andrew McCutchen, the next pirate to hit. Let’s go on the ground to third. They get the force and that will end the inning. Pirates leave one, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. Bottom of the seventh in now for the Reds. Matt Mlan second [Music] that misses and it’s one and0. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one, that’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched it. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. Hit softly on the ground to third. Triolo slings it across. One up, one down. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw. Here’s the center fielder. TJ Fredel drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. That one misses. And that’s ball one. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. And that’s in for a strike. Terrible. [Music] And a strike right through there. that one at triple digits. [Applause] Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Gavin Lux. Gavin Lux the next to hit for the Reds. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. Next offering upstairs. I got a ball. One strike. This ball’s chopped on the ground now. The throw to first on the run. Safe at first and an infield single keeps the inning going. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Paul Ste out of the game and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. So, out of the pen comes the rightander Dowry Moretta and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning. So he’ll be tough to get to. Two outs, runner at first. Noelv Marte the next to hit for the Reds. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Well, in this situation, hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit, but you got to stay within yourself. Two outs. Hit on the ground to short. Gonzalez, they take the force out. Inning over on the ground out. Took just two pitches to finish the frame out of the bullpen. So a job well done from the Buckos bullpen. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Pirates four and the Reds three. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Nick Martinez just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick Gonzalez. Nick Gonzalez. Red. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Martinez 61 righty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a cutter, a change up, a two seamer, and he occasionally uses a curve. Makes the grab. One away. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Sinsky batting with one down. Takes a strike. movement in the bullpen. Brent Sudter, the veteran southpaw, is getting ready to come on if needed. [Music] Here comes the Owan right through there for a strike. Absolutely frozen on that heater right down the middle. And that’s a pitch you’re just not getting back now. He’s in a tough spot, especially after falling behind on a good first pitch. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Joey Bart, the next pirate to hit. In for a strike 0 and one swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Pitch misses outside and the count one and two. His understanding of the strike zone very impressive. That was a very close O2 fastball. I just don’t know how you take that. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Flares it into the outfield. He’s got it. And that is out number three. Bucks go down quietly and it remains a 4-3 game. Back here at Great American Ballpark. Bottom of the eighth. Stepping in Spencer Steer. Spencer Steer. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. backed off the plate that time. [Music] Looking to get the tying run on base. Check swing called strike. Will Benson in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] 3-2. Got him looking. That was pretty nasty. Pretty big strikeout right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. [Applause] Yeah, the first offering is not close. [Music] You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. One down. Base is empty. Here’s a rocket out to left. Brings it in. Two up, two down. Man, that’s so frustrating. You hit the ball hard. You understand the situation. You want to get on base and try to score that tying run, but no reward right there. And just going to have to sit on it. Dela Cruz in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. and the 01. The shorts stop takes a ball. [Music] Two down. Nobody on. Good job to fight that one off. Very solid inning on the mound so far here in the eighth. Holding on to this narrow lead. This is exactly what they were looking for. And it’s even up. [Applause] Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. You got this. And now it’s filled up. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Two outs, fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. She’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. That’s a laser base hit. So, he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside, saw it deep into the zone, and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Dowry Moretta gives way and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. So they bring on their closer in the eighth, Dennis Santana. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So, two down now. The third baseman, Keebrian Hayes, Santana with a move to first [Music] off the mark there. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Ellie looking to steal. Pitch misses. Safe at second. And he easily steals the bag and the tying run is now in scoring position. [Applause] So the tying run at second drilled in the air high and deep right field going back. Oh no, he dropped it. In comes the run from second. Tie game here in the eighth. The tag and he’s out. So, not the best base running or defense there, but that’ll do it for the inning. But they’re able to even it up here in the late innings. Ninth inning coming up and we are tied 4-4. Back here in Cincinnati, all set for the start of the inning at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick York. Line drive, base hit, and a go-ahead run is on base. Everything came together for him. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. And that one lifted in the air center field. Fredel gets there. He’s under it. Puts it away for the Now batting third baseman Jared Triolo. Up next for the Pirates, Jared Triolo. Well, with pretty good speed over there at first base. I think the pitcher got to slow everything down. Hold the ball a little bit. Step off. Just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base dealer. And that one a little below the knees. 1 and0 activity in the bullpen for the Reds. Emlio Pagan up and loosening in the pen and that one missing low. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Tied at four. swinging a foul back and that’s out of play with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss and I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. Next is the DH, a switch hitter, Brian Reynolds. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. [Applause] [Applause] breaking ball misses down and away. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. Move to first. York back on a dive. Two gone. The possible go-ahead run at first. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Strike him out. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Strike him out. [Applause] 44 in the ninth and a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. They get a leadoff single but leave him stranded. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. And we are tied 44. All set for the bottom of the ninth. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Jose Trovinho and that’s in for a strike. Base hit center field. Lead off knock puts the winning run on base. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Cincinnati making a move for pinch hitter Miguel Anduhar. And this is a big at bat in this ball game. And that one fouled off. leather takes off and that is out of play. Let’s do it. Come on. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. That one missed. Line drive and no one can get there. throw comes in and the winning run moves up to second with nobody out. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Dennis Santana is done and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. back with a new arm after a quick break. So, they turn things over to the righty Carmen Majinski. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. First and second, no outs. And now it’s going to be TJ Fedel swinging and drive back there on its way. Ball game. A shot to the opposite field and they walk it off. [Applause] Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard. You’re creating the most pressure-p packed scenario. And what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing of the bat. Nice win for the team. This one finishes with a final of seven to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami saying so long.
