Brian Shottimer met with the media here in Fris on Monday and he was uh he had a little illness. He was sucking on throat lossenes. So yes, officially Dallas Cowboys sucking [Laughter] and sick and uh you’re in the same boat in the latter area at least. I’m Mike Fischer, your trusty and trusted reporter. the sucking and sickening and sinking. And we’re going to try to get to the wise tonight as it relates to the Cowboys, particularly pass defense. The pinpointed problem with the Cowboys, not counting the news that they’re not going to have CD Lamb for a while and they’re not going to have Tyler Booker for maybe more than a while. CD Lamb I um I don’t think they they put him on IR because he might be back sooner than four weeks. Tyler Booker, they might both of them dealing with the high ankle sprain sustained in Sunday’s um ugly 31 to4 loss at the Bears. the the centerpiece problem if you’re going to look at group by group by group is obviously uh this team’s past defense and among the issues is if you look back to week one and then move forward there’s the six bombs on the wall for those of you who embibe it’s regressing they’re going backwards they’re worse than they were in week on. It’s regressing. It’s sick. And as Shotti said about being one and two, generally, it sucks. Ah, shout out to uh a couple of fellas who don’t suck. There’s Johnny over at BMW of McKenna. And there’s Scott A over at Honda Cars of Mckini who helped drive this program. and we appreciate it. Along with you, 76,000 fish heads almost in Cowboys Nation who can’t be wrong. There can be light at the end of this tunnel in some ways. Dak Prescott led offense, even without CD Lamb, there can be light at the end of that tunnel. Cowboy special teams, nothing wrong there. Led by Aubrey and Turpin. Cowboys much maligned run defense over the years, nothing particularly wrong there. Generally speaking, the run defense has been good. In fact, Shotti said, quote, “I understand why teams don’t want to run against us. I wouldn’t run against us either. We’re playing the run well. If I was the other team, I’d just sling it all over the place, and that’s what we’re allowing to happen. And until we do something about it, that’s what we’re going to see for the next couple weeks. Um, we’re going to do this breakfast at fish needs tomorrow morning and a deep dive on whether or not the Cowboys should go get themselves a knucklehead. Anyway, you’re not going to cut 25 guys. So, that’s out. You can go chase other teams talent. You could do that. And again, tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., we’ll we’ll get into one guy that every Cowboy fanboy site now is right. The Cowboys simply must sign Gardenner Johnson. Why don’t we Why don’t we take a breath and examine it and we’ll do that. Jerry Hen, this is by far the worst defense in NFL history. No, it’s not. Good try, though. Uh uh I totally understand the knee-jerk reactions. I don’t think the knee-jerk reactions mean that you should go sign a bunch of jerks. Quarterback Russell Wilson just got benched in New York. His final harrah, he beat your butts. And what he did triggered an alarming trend. And now it’s a two-e trend. Explosives. I said it this morning. I haven’t even gone and counted them. The Cowboys defense must lead the NFL in explosive plays allowed. 20 yard pass plays or more. It it can’t even be close. Dangerous just got benched. He threw for 168 yards and nothing in week one. In week three, he threw for 160 yards and nothing. in between his Cowboy sandwich a ridiculous 450 yards and three touchdowns. He had he had quarters better than entire games he had against two other defenses against you. Then along comes the young Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and he has the game of his life. 298 yards passing and four touchdowns, never getting sacked a career first. His production, by the way, Caleb’s doubles his usual output. In the other two games, he’s averaging 208 yards and one and a half touchdowns. Doubled. Cowboys zone defense, and that’s what they do under Eberfloose. Not working. So, it’s either what what he’s teaching either a isn’t being learned or b doesn’t fit the personnel. Here’s the thing that um that though people in my profession often forget to ask and I’m gonna I need to try to put it on my list this week as we hang out at the star. Why? Why isn’t it being learned? Why isn’t it being taught right? We’re going to get into communication problems in a minute. Okay, fine. Communication problems. Why, Rodrik? Simplify the defense. It’s on my list. Shotti, regarding the scheme, I have complete trust in what we’re doing from a scheme standpoint. Diddly diddly dink. You do. In terms of players, I think they bought into what we’re trying to do as a football team. You do. We just got to execute better. Is that’s it? So, the coaching’s great and the players are great. And one of the reasons why is this. I don’t think I need another CD Lamb down. I don’t think there’s another body that I can elevate from the practice squad. Oh, you know, he’ll play wide receiver as much as I think I might be able to get something out of Jaden Blue. And I’m not just saying that and I don’t think you are either because Cowboy fans want to see blue. I don’t think that’s it. I I think especially with CD Lamb down, I think this is a great point by you. This team’s going to need and what they do defensively. This team needs fireworks on offense. It’s the only way they’re going to win. I don’t believe this is all about execution to the point where scheme and talent can be ignored. And by the way, that’s not just the secondary trade Michael Parsons to Green Bay and now you get to see him on Sunday night here. That trade demanded that other guys step up as pass rushers and they haven’t done that at all. This defensive line isn’t getting pressure on the quarterback. And we’ve diagnosed this over the course of the last couple weeks. Defensive ends, guilty of blowing assignments, lone rangering, brain cramps, and the Cowboys don’t seem to favor blitzing. We’re not learning Mandarin Chinese here. It’s football zone defense. Aka Dak is sucking again. No, that’s aka Did you watch the game? Injury issues with Don Bland and others leave the secondary looking thin. another reason to look at adding personnel from the outside. But I will say this, and I’ve had this conversation now with a couple guys inside the Star Communication issues. Aka Dak just threw two interceptions. You didn’t watch the game. Aka, you did not clearly did not watch the game or I love you. You’re one of my 76,000 best friends. you either didn’t watch the game or you don’t understand football and it can’t be the second one or you wouldn’t be here and you wouldn’t be popping it off. That’s just not true. Your diagnosis of the Cowboys problems at Chicago, you’re just you’re simply wrong. So, communication issues, including veteran corners and safeties who ought to be above and beyond that. And as a result, we’ve got receivers running free all over the place. And when I go back to communication issues, I go back to But why? So, Shotti frankly concedes that when you’re not playing well, there’s going to be doubts. Okay, now we’re getting somewhere. Let’s quit pretending that everybody’s buying in and everything’s rosy and all the players love what they’re doing. They’re just gonna try a little harder. Of course, the fact that Shottenheimer in one breath is saying, “We have complete trust. Everybody’s complete trust.” And the next breath says, “Well, when you’re not playing well, there’s going to be doubts.” Right? He says, “I don’t think it’ll take us long to get the confidence back, but I understand why guys might be saying,”Oh, what about this? What about that? So, what about this, Shotty? What about that? Because the players in, if you read between Shotti’s own lines, are kind of questioning the scheme. So, how can that be massaged? Shy, as a coach, you look for solutions. And if we’re not doing certain things well, then by simply deleting some things, that makes you simplify. Okay. So, to the points that many of you are making, this isn’t this isn’t Mandarin Chinese trying to be learned on the fly. Adam Davidson, $5 pitching. Get Odell Beckham. No. Get the Texans to take the star out of their helmet. Yeah. I’m like pool of Z $5 pitching. that didn’t have 200 yards by the end of the third quarter. I’m not talking about reading the stat sheet. I’m talking about watching the games. Jeremiah Hamilton, Uncle Fish Premium Fish, Will Mcclelay and his scouting have failed. Uh their defensive draft picks have not panned out well. Um, some of them aren’t here because they did okay, Dorrence Armstrong. Some of them aren’t here for other reasons, Micah Parsons. But this much is true about Will Mcclelay and the scouting department and the drafts here. The the production and Mazy Smith obviously is the crummy crown jewel here. the the the defensive production from recent drafts haven’t been good enough. So Shotti says we’re going to simplify and he says we’d be crazy if we didn’t look to do so. My effort here isn’t about demanding a firing three weeks into the season, demanding a head on the stick. It’s not even about fingerpointing or blame laying. It’s about an honest self-evaluation of what’s wrong and why. I’m exhausted and have been for a long time around here by this chemistry stuff. They don’t even know what chemistry is. So trumpeting this team’s vaunted chemistry isn’t being honest. and Shotti revealing that defensive team meetings he said he said something like we’re going to have everybody in the same meeting room now more often or something like that okay I mean that’s a change I guess is it does that increase understanding brotherhship communication that’s not really hey let’s all meet together that’s not really change It’s rearranging the deck chairs on this sucking, sickening, sinking Titanic of a defense. out.
