What impressive workout does this new addition to the Canes roster do to prepare for seasons?
Shall we chat with Charles Alexis LGO? Every year there’s one player who turns heads in training camp. I have opined that it could be right shot defenseman Charles Alexis LGO. Uh the pride of Quinnipic University, a national champion, and he joins us on the Adam Gold show. Uh Charles, how you doing? Are you uh did you survive day two of training camp? Yeah. Yeah. I’m doing good. I’m doing good. The body’s feeling it, but uh but it’s good. Does it get easier? So, you went through it last year. Does it does it get any easier year to year? I I don’t know. I feel it gets worse, but uh but yeah, you prepare a bit more uh when you know what’s coming. So, this year I feel like it was better, but the the anticipation is what’s the worst. I I think that is so beautiful. Uh so I I got a chance to watch the uh the conditioning skate at the end of uh practice, you know, your training session yesterday. Uh can you describe what that’s like because I there might be people listening who are also out at Invisalign watching that. Can you describe what that skate is like? I mean, it’s it’s just a mental battle. Just taking a step after the other and and not giving up. Uh that’s basically it. And you you try to keep some juice in the tank for the second one because it’s going to be hard and your legs start seizing up at the end, but you just got to push through it. Did So, did you train specifically by doing that um to get ready? Yeah. So gradually as the summer went on, I kind of did like three hustle skates, so like three times, and I increased the volume as I got closer towards camp. Charles Alexis, like that’s it’s just an incredible thing to watch. Uh, and you could tell there’s I mean, guys feel it differently. Uh, and you could you could actually see when players legs are just kind of I can’t I just can’t push this leg forward anymore. Charles Alexis LGO is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. So, uh, you leave Quiddipiac, uh, you turned pro, last year was your first full year, uh, in the American Hockey League. Um, how how much of how much more of a physical grind was it? Or was it more of a mental grind? It’s a bit of both, I’d say. I mean, physically, it’s just normal. you end up playing twice as many games as you you do in college. So the the body’s nicked up and you just got to find a way to mentally get through the season and and find a routine that works for you. So yeah, as the season went on, I feel like I learned a bit more about how to manage uh my schedule and it was a good learning curve. Did you prepare any differently for the season coming off of your first pro league pro pro year? Uh yeah, a bit more. You try to focus on durability and and cardio because you play more games, so you need to be a bit more in shape and you you don’t want to carry as much weight as you did in college because you don’t have as much time to recover. But yeah, I focus pretty much on the same things still, like being explosive, being strong, and being fast. So those are still the main focus um throughout the summer. Charles Alexis LGO is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. Who have you kind of stayed close to? I mean, I realize you’re practicing with, you know, a lot of the other uh young players. There are some veterans there, but basically most of the young players are in your group, but I know you’ve been around here for a little bit. So, who are you staying close to and trying to learn from? Yeah, I mean I I stay close to to the French guys. I mean, Robidah and Bradley, I live with them, so we’re pretty close. And um I went to school with Skyler, so I we were close in college and got even more close last year as we were roommates in Chicago. So, I stayed close with that those guys. and just being able to skate with Schnesikov, Chadfield, Slavven, those guys are great example for us. So, it’s been great to to learn from them and to skate with them this summer. How’s Skyler’s French? Oh, brutal. But he’s getting he’s getting better. He’s getting better. I’m I’m teaching him some words here and there, so he’s picking up. Uh, good. Charles Alexis LGO is joining us here. So, uh, you say you you you skated with Chatfield and and Jacob Slavven. So, when you’ve watched them, what what it is what is it about their games that you notice that you would like to take and make part of your own? I mean, obviously those two guys are just relentless on defense. The the way they’re good with their sticks, they defend with their feet and they’re always in in your face. That’s something I I’m trying to pick up and and focus on because I that’s I feel like that’s what’s going to be my role and I I try to look at and pick up things that those guys do well so I could uh implicate it in my game. If if I asked you for a scouting report, if you were writing here’s a scouting report on your game, what would you tell me? I mean, just just a hard-nosed guy that work hard and and try to put his best foot forward, get better every day, and um and yet that takes pride in in his work defensively and likes to contribute on offense once in a while. All right, let me ask you one more question and we’ll let uh we’ll let you go. Uh you want a title at Quinnipic. Uh, I know uh that’s something Skyler uh did in college that his father did not. Of course, Rod only stayed for one year. Um, what was that what was that experience like as you went through it? So, like you had a obviously had a great year and you got into the NCAA tournament, but then as the games got harder, what was that whole experience like? What did you learn from it? It was great. I mean we we had a great leadership group at Kunipak, a bunch of fifth years that came back and took the option because of co so those guys just led the way and the the culture at Kunipak was great just being able to to come in and the guys showing you what to do. So, it I mean that experience was amazing. Probably the the best hockey uh hockey experience I’ve had in my life to be able to win a championship with the with those guys. Well, the next championship uh I think will be better. Uh Charles Charles Alexis LGO. Uh thank you very much. I appreciate your time. Good luck. Uh continue teaching Skyler Bindammore French. I will. I will. Thank you for having me.
