PHILLIES POSTCAST: Philadelphia Phillies blow 3-0 lead, fall to Miami Marlins, 6-5 in 11 innings
This is the Phillies Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Philadelphia Phillies, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. You know, I really I really thought the Phillies were going to uh you know, give you guys a nice little break after a West Coast trip, staying up to watch games like that. you know, get out of it, you know, like a normal 645 end should happen. You know, 9:30, that kind of thing. They’re up 3 nothing. Christopher Sanchez is dealing. Gives you seven innings. So, it’s like, oh, you just got to give got to get one inning really from the bullpen because Joe’s got this right. No problem. David Robertson gets roughed up. Joe Anderon blows his third save now as a member of the Phillies, I believe. Um, fifth overall. So, uh, not feeling really good about the Phillies. JT Romuto, as I was watching him tonight, I went over his numbers over the last couple of months. 250 batting average in August. This month, he’s batting about 210 around 210, 200, something like that. So, I’m already thinking, give him a break. He deserves a nice vacation. Don’t have to worry about anything. You just take a nice vacation for yourself, JT Romuto. And then, not that I was rooting for this by any means, but it would be more cause for just him getting a break. He gets that uh ball off his throwing hand, he’s later pulled from the game. He stays in the game at that moment and then Raphael Marshon ends up hitting for him in the ninth inning as affiliates try to get something going and they did. Raphael Marshon got the leadoff base hit there which was really nice. and then an hour and 9minute rain delay after of course Joe Andron gave up the gametying home run in the top of the ninth inning. We will break it all down from not hitting with runners in scoring position to barely having runners in scoring position to base running blunders i.e. Max Kepler who h I I believe he had two on in one inning. That’s tough but he did it. Good for him. Uh and also while Weston Wilson out trying to stretch a single into a double which was just absolutely ridiculous. But Phillies take a 65 loss in 11 innings tonight and waste a seven scoreless inning affair from Christopher Sanchez and fail uh to have everybody else have the good vibes go in South Philadelphia as they come back from their road trip. And this one was just plain ugly. Let’s get into it. First and foremost, before we get into our chat check and all that, let’s talk about our player of the game. This is the locked on player of the game. I don’t care that they lost. I honestly Christopher Sanchez is still the player of the game. I don’t care. It pisses me off that they lost six to five. It pisses me off that they had opportunities in extras and they couldn’t capitalize on it. The guy that was the best player tonight was Christopher Sanchez. So that deserves player of the not Conine. Forget about it. No, no, no. It’s Christopher Sanchez. He had four of his five strikeouts tonight uh came by way of three pitch changeups. Three pitches, four of the six ch he had six strikeouts in total. Four of them came by three pitches all were put outs with change ups. just his dominant pitch he had working tonight. He gave up three hits. He issued just one walk. He was spectacular. And going into that seventh inning, I’m thinking, man, can he get a complete game out of him? Can he get a complete game out of Christopher Sanchez? Going into that seventh inning, he was at 73 pitches. Unfortunately for his night, uh he had the biggest workload of the evening for him. He had a 17 pitch first inning and then unfortunately an 18 pitch seventh inning, but it still was a one-tw inning getting Norby to ground out to short. Hernandez then struck out 2-2 on a sinker. That was a seven pitch of bat and then he got Edwards to ground out, roll over on one there to second base to get get out of that. He ended up with 91 pitches over his seven innings of work. Yes, you absolutely could have had him come back out. You have a three nothing lead. you’re playing the Marlins and you are in a in a situation where Christopher Sanchez does need to save the arm for the postseason. I have zero problem with Rob Thompson. Look, the the winning the number one seed overall, forget about it. It I that’s a pipe dream as far as I’m concerned right now. Uh I have no issue with the Phillies not getting that number one seed. Christopher Sanchez getting a little bit of a break tonight, I think is well worth it in the long run. So he comes out after that seventh inning. You bring in David Robertson. This was absolutely time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. Eighth inning, David Robertson, who has been really good for you uh since he’s been picked up. Just a sight for Sore Eyes. Really helping you out in the bullpen there. Wag him. He gets out for the first out of the inning. Strikes him out on a knuckle curve brilliantly. Nice job by him. Three nothing game still. Then he faces Conine. He gets down to the count. He gets into the 3-1 count. He throws a cut fast ball that is just in the please hit me zone and he blasted 381 ft for the first run of the game there for the Marlins. So now it’s a 3-1 game. So he then pops out to third. So now all of a sudden he got two outs in the inning. Things are still looking good. All right, David Robertson gave up a home run. There’s no way that Joe Duron is going to give up two runs in his inning of work, right? No way. Well, David Robertson’s still not done. Lopez gets the single off him to left field. Hick steps up to the plate. Just gets it right off the end of the bats able to put it into center field for the RBI single. You now got a 3-2 ball game. They score, excuse me, they score it on the baiter error. Unfortunately, the defense bites the Phillies in the behind on this, but still was another base not given up by David Robertson. Robertson comes out of the game. Banks comes in, throws five pitches, one he gets the strike out there of Marcy. He’s done on a one-two slider. See you later. You’re out of that inning. You’re leading one- nothing. You can give Joe at least a one-run lead. Phillies come out there in the bottom of the eighth inning trying to get something going. Leadoff single for Harrison Bader. Schwarber goes down swinging unfortunately on a strike him out. Throw him out double play. Bader gets thrown out at second base. Bone comes up and he unfortunately uh hits a ground ball to Lopez at short. Now Lopez on the caught stealing by Harrison Bader. Lopez had a real nonchalant tag. No big deal. Almost missed him, but he did get him. Simple as that. So Bow unfortunately hits a little grounder to shortstop. Uh Lopez tries to field it. It clanks off his mitt and dribbles into shallow left field. So Bow is is on board via the error there. The E6 Marsh steps up there. He gets a 3-1 cutter. This one stays out over the middle of the plate and he put a good swing on it. He just didn’t follow the golden rules of baseball. One of them being hit them where they ain’t and unfortunately he hit it right at left field. Uh so that was that Phillies couldn’t do anything. Then Joan Duron comes in. He strikes out Norby. Good. He gets up in the count to Hernandez. Now, during this count, JT Romeo gets the ball off his hand during this at bat. So, they have to stop play for a little bit. Trainers come out. I don’t know if that took Joe Andron out of a bit of a rhythm or whatever. I don’t know. Uh, no excuses. You’re up 02 on a hitter. He gives him a fast ball that JT Ral Muto calls for. Uh, high. Not top of the zone, not up in the zone, but high. You understand what I’m saying? Shoulders. Shoulders is where JT real Mutos lined up for it. He’s up here with the mitt. Pitch comes all the way down. Belt high fast ball 100 miles per hour. dead center of the plate. I don’t care if you’re throwing 200 miles per hour, you put the ball there, a big league hitter is going to hit it. Uh even yes, if they play for the Marlins and Hernandez did not miss this 100 mile per hour fast ball, 02 fast ball, dead center, middle of the plate, and he blasted at 380 ft for the 33 tie tie ball game. Phillies going to the bottom of the ninth inning. Marshon, this is where he had the rain delay after Marawn’s at bat. Max Kepler goes down in the count, unfortunately, due to a horrible strike call to Vic Kerapatza. That’s not why they lost, but I’m just saying that sucked. And the Phillies just seemed pretty much mushed from that point on. You get into extra innings, they just couldn’t stop the Marlins. You just let them kept scoring runs, three to be exact, to your two, uh, excuse me, to your one. And a big portion, a big reason for that, big two, excuse me. The big reason for that was Nick Castado’s coming up in the clutch to make sure he tied this game and kept the Phillies alive, which he absolutely did there in the 10th inning as a pinch hitter. Uh was down on the count 02, worked it to a full count, got a change up, waited on it, delivered into left field for the RBI single, tied things up at five. I thought that was going to be the moment that was going to turn everything. I thought that was going to be the moment right there that turned everything in favor of the Phillies. And unfortunately, Simpson held true and was able to keep the Phillies off the board after that. Uh, as far as what you’ll be talking about tomorrow, this is what you’ll be talking about. You’ll be talking about the bullpen. You’ll be talking about Joe Underron blowing a save. You’re going to be talking about David Robertson just absolutely not having it tonight, unfortunately. You’re going to be talking about blowing Christopher Sanchez’s seven scoreless gem. You’ll be talking about that tomorrow. And I really hope you’re talking about the terrible base running tonight. Let’s start it off in the second inning with the terrible base running. Okay. Okay. Max Kepler leads it off by uh putting one off the wall just over Myers head in right field. Myers makes a a great attempt at the ball. If if you’re the starting pitcher, if you’re Edward Cabrera, you want to you love that effort. For whatever reason, on the I hate to call it a misplay on a play that a guy got hurt, but misplay. Kepler stops at second base and is like, “Hey, class act Max Kepler. Swell guy. He’s concerned about his fellow baseball player, his fellow outfielder, and the way he went into the wall. it. I I think Kepler could have made it to third. There’s a good possibility he could have made it to third. Either way, he’s on second base with a leadoff double. Okay, let’s do something with that. Here’s my bigger problem, though, because again, questionable as to whether or not he can make it to third. Questionable, but he’s a leadoff double standing on second base. Weston Wilson hits it to the third base side of the infield. fielded by Lopez at short who throws to third. For whatever reason, Max Keller’s trying to take third on this play. I reference the Grand Book of Baseball quite often on this show. Usually, it’s only to say, “Oh, in the Grand Book of Baseball, I know you do this, but in this situation, you shouldn’t have, but no, in this situation, the Grand Book of Baseball’s right. Max Kemple should not have tried to take third base.” He tried to take third base. Now instead of had a running and now instead of having a runner in scoring position with one out, now you have Weston Wilson on first base on a fieldielder’s choice. Now the good thing about this is uh you eventually did get a run home, two actually on Otto Kemp’s two-run home run, but it could have been more, could have been better. Phillies took a three nothing lead after that inning. So Kepler could have arguably had two base running errors in one inning. one not advancing to third on the misplay in right field by Meyers and the other uh well being thrown out of third for no good reason. Then you fast forward a little bit later in the game and the Phillies are trying to get something else going for themselves and this is when Weston Wilson stepped up with one out. Weston Wilson steps up there after Max Kepler lined out to first. As a matter of fact, uh Wilson steps up there, puts one into left field and I I don’t know what it was when I saw the ball land. I just said, “Okay, that’s one. That’s one, right? That’s one. And then you hear T-Mac go, he’s going for two. Oh boy. And then it was one of those situations that Weston Wilson actually put a good slide in there and trying to avoid the tag, but he was so the play beat him there by so much. And yes, he was out. He was tagged before he touched the base anyway, but he made it closer than I thought it was going to be. Uh he gets thrown out second base. So now instead of having a one out base runner, you have nothing. You have two outs, as a matter of fact. That’s dumb baseball. That’s a desperate team and the Phillies shouldn’t be playing like a desperate team right now. The Phillies should be playing like a smart team and unfortunately that has evaded them. When we come back, we’ll take your comments on this one, this long one tonight, especially featuring the hour and 9 minute rain delay. We’ll get your comments after this. I’m going to work my way back here. Here Elliot, hello. There was another uh instance to Marsh a ball in the alley and just starts lolly gagging to second base. I I did I know that’s a good point, Elliot. I I don’t know if he would have made it to third, but I did notice he hit coast. He hit cruise control a lot earlier than I thought he would have. Julian C. What’s up, Julian? Offense is poo again. Was Stum sick? I don’t know. Sean Don loves to keep throwing O2 pitches right down the middle. I just don’t get it. I don’t get why that ball was just a big old fatty right over the middle of the plate. Two, three, uh, two of the three blown saves have come against pesky defense uh, division teams. Okay. All right, fair enough. Robertson’s RA over the last seven games is 750. Why is he in a high lever situation? I don’t know. But I’ll say this. Uh, Orion Kirkering coming in with a guaranteed inherited runner. Did we all know how that was going to end? When I saw him warming up and then I knew the Phillies were going to extras, I went, “Oh, okay. Well, that’s one run that’s going to score. Let’s see how they go after that.” Not great. Steven Lang, ladies and gentlemen, you have just witnessed the amazing disappearing offense. Girkering could not shut down a Ghostr runner. RF, you and I are on the same page. Sebrook, it could be worse. At least we aren’t the Tigers. How about that? Tigers. I saw that they were just uh I forget who had it, but minus 100,000 to win the division. That went away. David waited for an hour for that. I know. Painful day of baseball, says Philly and Nate. Why does Durant throw the ball anywhere near the plate when it’s 02? I don’t know. Barry won. Barry won. He got nobody on base. Morgan Landy, you’re exactly right. John Msina just disgusting. Evelyn, really tired of this offense not producing when the starter pitch is a gem. Uh yeah, bullpen doesn’t help, but come on offense. You know, somebody I don’t know if it was the the TV broadcast, but reference the runners in scoring position tonight for the Phillies. Oh, I mean three for 15 with runners in scoring position, but how many of those at bats were and how many of those hits came with um Cassy Bone? Yeah, extra innings. Oh, yeah. I didn’t even mention this yet. Kyle Schwarber his 54th home run of the season. That was fun. That’s part of how you blew the or how you got the three nothing lead. Schwarber got, speaking of high fast balls, Schwarber got a high fast ball, 98 miles per hour, and it’s almost the one that just makes you not want to swing at it because you know how he’s going to he’s going to go flailing at some of these like for the 10 he flails at the one, you know, this is the one he’ll hit. Um, but yeah, he got he caught up to this one. They did not sneak it by. I mean, he put in the second deck in right field. Graph support of this team is like kissing your cousin. It’s so confusing. Well, I wouldn’t know. Wouldn’t by the way there was a wouldn’t at the end of that would not would not know Weston Wilson proved tonight why is a quadruple a player that’s funny turning it up to 11 cuz it’s uh one louder isn’t it I guess I guess Nicki Nips cold off the bench comes up in the clutch this is when think when good things were happening I could see yeah I don’t want to revisit that uh thanks everybody in the chat you guys are great as per usual I’ll be back with you guys tomorrow for another edition of Locked On Phillies postcast. I look forward to that one. Uh hopefully that one ends with, you know, the Phillies winning a baseball game. That’d be fun. Uh and also JT Romeo getting a couple of days off, like I don’t know, maybe five more days off. 6:45 start time. By the way, tomorrow night, Jesus Lazardo gets to start against Ryan Weathers. Weather’s a lefty, two and one on the season with a 321 erra. Lazardo 14-7 with a 408. That’s what the Phillies got going on tomorrow night. Thanks for listening. Thanks for watching. Be be back with you guys then. Uh and also back with you guys tomorrow morning uh for Locked on 76 coming up at 10 o’clock with my man Keith Pompei. Thanks for listening. Thanks for watching. Back with you guys tomorrow. See you then.
Philadelphia Phillies returned form their west coast road trip and thrilled, but then disappointed fans with a 6-5 loss to the Miami Marlins in 11 innings.
Phillies got on the board early as Kyle Schwarber belted a high fastball from Edward Cabrera 385ft to the 2nd deck in right field in the 1st inning for his 54th homer of the season.
Otto Kemp followed with a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, his 7th round tripper on the year.
Cristopher Sanchez would need as he tossed seven innings of scoreless baseball. The lefty allowed just three hits and a walk using 91 pitches over his outing. He improves to 14-5 and lowers his career ERA against the Marlins to 1.06.
But the real game started AFTER Sanchez’s night was done. David Robertson allowed a solo homer then another run to score on a Harrison Bader throwing error. Then with the Phillies leading 3-2 in the top of the 9th, Jhoan Duran allowed a game tying solo homer by Heriberto Hernandez.
Then the Marlins took control in extras.
