I think this is a reasonable take. If we do make playoffs I think a lot will have to be attributed to the coaching doing a good job of getting more out of the roster than previous seasons. Big steps in special teams will go a really long way, and hopefully the new defensive structure pays off – if those things don’t happen then it’ll be tough to see us in a playoff spot.

I think I agree. A lot of people think it’s playoffs or bust, but I really don’t think that’s the case. We still have a very young team, and while he’s the second winningest coach of all time, it’s still a new system with an entirely new staff. There’s still going to be growing pains along the way.
I think this year, we will be playing meaningful hockey well in to march, possibly April, rather than the beginning of February, but I also think that’s a promising sign.
The first year under Cronin’s man on man defense was comical and embarrassing as the Ducks ran into each other often. Other teams knew this and exploited it.
But they did try to adjust and move into a hybrid system
Brent Thompson was the asst coach in charge of defense
In the words of my favorite band, “We’ll make it if you believe”
Seems slightly over generous. I believe the most likely outcome is to finish +/-5 points from where they finished last season, but it won’t look as fluky and goalie-dependent. That would be a respectable improvement.
I’m more optimistic than Puck Daddy is but I’m also a Ducks fan and he isn’t. I think the Ducks will be better in the following areas:
– PP
– PK
– Faceoffs
– Shots Allowed
Scoring more goals, giving up less goals and having the puck more often will lead to a huge jump, IMO, and once the results start to be seen by the players the belief and excitement of playing good hockey and playing games that matter will create a momentum that will carry this team to 90+ points.
