It’s clear that he was going through a lot emotionally. He’s a real one.
Remember seeing the media around this, never saw this clip – changes the whole context. ESPN and the media in general was clip-baiting before click-baiting, and look how bad it is now
This should be the main lesson in his practice rant not the meme part
This press conference was also days after the start of the trial of the man who murdered his best friend. I remember seeing this all over TSN in Canada (where we generally hated the 76ers at the time) and thinking that the cut clip was exactly the bullshit that he was talking about. Taking a small aspect of a players life, and building an entire image of that person around it through a narrative that players can not control.
Love Allen Iverson. The media tried to make him look like nothing but a thug. Dude was just a family man that could play Basketball.
I wish that at the outcome of this, the NBA would have wholesale changed policies based on the perspective he clearly articulated. He is absolutely 100% correct. But because he is a black man who speaks using AAVE – nothing happened. If this exact thing happened to Peyton Manning and he communicated the exact same thing in the exact same way but with his vernacular, there was have been public outcry and changes made. But instead – the whole context was missed and made into a joke. It’s fucking infuriating.
The guy clearly was pretty thoughtful. That carries through now to how he likes to give props to and support the younger guys, unlike many former players. Glad the game of basketball had him
The mental health aspect was never talked about much back then. But bro was goin thru it fr.
It’s sad it was made into such a joke at the time when I reality, it was him opening up and being vulnerable.
This is the calmest fuming man I’ve ever seen. Great speech.
I’ve held a grudge w the media since this happened. its always been taken out of context. Iverson was a gamer and lived and died w his effort on the court.
I’m always disappointed when a player on my team isn’t 100% devoted to the game like Tom Brady but then I think about how I’m perfectly fine in my current job and I don’t feel like moving up or picking up extra responsibilities and duties.
Man so many people don’t care about his domestic violence shit huh? It’s reddit I’m not surprised
AI was a real genuine dude
Redditors are actually falling for this shit? Lmao oh wow he has a daughter as an NBA star. What a rough life that he gets criticized by the media.
“Going to war”…getting paid milliojs to play with a ball..
I fucking love Iverson
Go Red Sox!
“I’m just like you 🫵”

AI for president !!!

His friend just died. This speech is kind of sad.
I wish he would have stopped holding back and tell us how he really felt
It’s even worse now with people complaining to athletes. With social media they’re more available and with gambling out of control, people say the most vile things directly to the athletes.
The media absolutely did him dirty because they edited out all the pseudo profound things he said and made it all about ranting about practice. And the irony is this was a big part of the point he was trying to make.
love all of it, game part not that much when you getting paid millions, but authenticity is refreshing
My favorite player of all time
As real as it gets.
Love that guy.
The girl in my class said “you gettin traded”🤣that girl’s parents are diabolical
Everybody remembers that he didn’t go to practice. Nobody remembers that he just found out his close friend had just died.
Great speech.
Reporters in the room be like Are we still talking about practice?
God so pretentious.
“Oh booo hoo I have to sit here and make millions so that my family and I can live the easy life boo hooooo”
Leave if its so important to you. Its not that hard, stand up and walk away. Nobody is holding a gun to his head.
Iconic.
Remember that Howard Eskin asked this question to AI and that dude is a major scumbag.
Growing up I think this was my first experience with how the media can take things out of context. I spent most of my teens and early 20s thinking he was just complaining about practice, only to watch the documentary, see the full spiel and realize it had nothing to do with practice.
A very important lesson I try not to forget.
The NBA and the media don’t give a fuck about Black mental health. No major sports leagues do. They’ve always had all the resources and platforms and still consistently pull shit like this.
Love AI, grew up watching him. Lived a couple hours from Philly and had Sixers games as local, so watched plenty of him in his prime. This was before streaming obviously and my family didn’t have the equivalent of the NBA League Pass package if it even existed back then, so most people watched a lot of their regional teams’ games.
Couple things to unpack here. The mental health aspect is first and foremost and it’s great that he spoke up about it. He is human after all and deserved to be treated with the same amount of humanity other people do, whether he was in the spotlight or not. The one part I might disagree a little with him is that it’s just a game. It’s obviously his job where he’s making a lot (including requisite media availability, however much that was) and he’s also in the public limelight, so it’s natural that some criticism is normal and allowed. That’s said, it should definitely not exceed what is humane and what he was going through at the time. It was not fair for them to go after him that hard after his best friend’s unfortunate passing and the media should have known that and acted accordingly. And that remains the case whether it is a job or a game.
This is what I’ve always said about his practice rant. People took it and used it as “look at this guy who doesn’t think he needs to practice” and it was always, if you listened to the whole thing, *he’s right*.
One of the realest ever
Pretty damn good Answer
Red Sox hat?
AI really was the people’s champ man. May have never been the best player, but he was a lot of people’s favorites. That AI doc went platinum in millennial households growing up
dang it must have been hard making millions a year, surprised he made it through
I understand
TWO BIG TAKEAWAYS:
1). It’s pretty wild to think about how much he was criticized, but in today’s NBA practice habits and attendance has changed drastically, especially for someone perpetually top five in minutes per game. Scientifically they believe in rest now lol.
2). Wow. He validated every Redditor who says “he just like me fr” haha
it’s like he was just repeating practice to keep from fucking breaking down

In case anyone missed [Ted Lasso’s](https://share.google/OL8IPppFtkGHBxUx4) version, it’s gold.
