🔴LIVE 🔴Milwaukee Brewers VS San Diego Padres /September 24/ Baseball envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
go in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres’s. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set and our starting pitcher here today, Randy Vasquez. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Christian Yelich leading things off and takes a strike. The wind to the pitch. Swang at a high-fly ball. Well struck. That’s back there. Solo homer. He crushes that one to right field. The first batter of the game leaves the yard. Home run number 30 on the year. And just like that, they’re out front. It’s one- nothing. Boo. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. Well, we see this so much more today. Lineups with pop in the leadoff spot and it really puts the pitcher in a tough spot out there where he has to execute right away. You can’t just get over a couple of strikes to settle in, get comfortable because at the plate that guy’s looking to do exactly what he just did. start the game off with a huge bank. Now a chance for Jackson Chorio. No question about this one. It’s out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers. His 21st of the year. It’s two nothing. He put a charge into that one. That was a lightning swing right there. No doubt about it. That home run certainly worthy of another look with Stackcast, huh, Singy? I mean, that ball screamed out of here. Absolutely. I mean, we only see a handful of home runs with an exit VO around 116 mph. And the best we usually see in a season is somewhere in the high teens. And every couple of years, somebody breaks 120 off the bat. But that’s extremely rare. This is Bryce Terra. Randy. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Sheets sizing this one up. Puts it away for the out. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Blake Perkins. Big time speed here. Boo. A guy with just terrific wheels and an absolute nightmare for opposing pitchers when he’s on base. I mean, players like this who have elite speed, it’s like disruptive technology on the base paths. Man, can’t wait to watch him run. William Contreras batting with one down. Takes a strike. One out. Base is empty. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Lauraniano calls it in. Two away. Batting fifth, right fielder Sal Felick. Two out, space is empty. Sal Freelick up now for the Brewers. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. Two down to pulls that one foul. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Third out and that ends the frame. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working and it’s two zip. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in San Diego on the hill here today, Bruce Zimmerman. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a field difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. This one popped up. Terra and there’s one down as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. And no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Ryan O’Harn. Well, these days we know teams, you know, they put a game plan together for every hitter in a lineup. But a guy like this, they circle him, make sure he doesn’t beat you. Uh so, you know, they put in a little extra time and effort and on how they’re going to approach him. He can be a huge difference maker when he’s hot. So, it’s going to be fun to see how they try to work him right here. Xander Bogarts at the plate now. That’s ball one. Bogarts who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter and it goes just foul. Here’s a one-two swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. He makes the grab. Two away now. Batting third. Left fielder. Gavin. Two down. Base is empty. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left-hand bat. Chris. He’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. He swings and fouls one off. Ground ball to the right side and foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with the fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up out there to center and that’ll fall for a base hit and that keeps the inning alive. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. When you flare a ball out behind second base, it’s really a tough spot for anyone to get to. And you’re never trying to do that as a hitter, but when you do, I tell you what, you’re yelling at it the entire way to get down. Raone Lauraniano in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. This one in the dirt. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So that’s two straight two out hits. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit missed with a change up and that’s ball one. Sheets the lead runner at second. Lauraniano at first, two out of the inning. fast ball in for a strike and it’s one and two. Man, I’m pretty impressed out there on the mound right now. I mean, these are tough spots where pitchers really got to bear down. Those last two pitches were well executed. Now a screamer into the outfield. Chorio makes the catch. That is the inning. Padres’s leave a pair and they’re down two nothing. Back here at Petco Park. New inning getting started. And here is number 21. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Carl Dixon doing the umpiring behind the plate. And Boo, I’m not sure if it’s because he sort of sets up higher than most, but one thing to be aware of with Dixon is the high strike. Not usually a big deal because most players are swinging at pitches up there. But we may see some surprise looks from hitters from time to time because that’s just so unusual. And that one upstairs. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Nabs it and there’s one down. Batting seventh. First baseman Jake Bowers. Now here’s Jake Bowers. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Ball one. No strike outside. That’s a ball. And no one can get there. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Didn’t exactly square that one up, but sometimes you don’t have to. Pitch was away, so he definitely pulled off it there. Not what you want to do with the pitch in that location really, but he was able to guide it into the outfield for the knock. One down. Next for Milwaukee, Blake Perkins. Outside corner, there’s a strike. Move to first. Bowers back in on a dive. Now one and one. And that one fouled off. Ground ball left side. Could be two. Throw to first in time. batting short stop. Now it’s the short stop. Joseph Ortiz, he’s going to finish the season with a new career best for runs scored. Singi, swinging a foul straight back. The shorts stop takes a ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. Cracks his bat and pops him off. Fine. Pulls that one down and that’ll do it. Milwaukee leaves one as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. And we’re back. And now the veteran third baseman, Jose Glaciius. Jose Glacius. and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. That fast ball, even though it’s up, that’s the velocity you want to go after. Low 90s a lot better than trying to hit the high 90s to the left side, but it is well fouled. Knocks that one away and will do it again. that one off the mark and the count is one and two. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. And a swing and a miss and that’s the first out. Here’s the center fielder Bryce Johnson. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. One and one. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. 0 and two now. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout. All fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. Freddy Fine stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. There’s the strike. And a swing and a miss. Filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back. Good job to fight that one off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Out towards left center, Chorio on the move to the gap, brings it in. And that is that. After two, it’s a two nothing ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Now it’s Christian Yelich. Vasquez back to work. Yelich, 33 years old, and he’s usually in the outfield. Today he’s the DH. that one finds the corner and the count one and two. Oh, that got away from him and he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Jackson Chorio now at the plate. He’s already homered in this game. Singing, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat, he thinks this ball’s going to get down. Because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground, he enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. McCoy hauls it in and there’s one away. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrating with himself until his next at bat. Now it’s the second baseman, Bryce Terang. Fly to left his first time. Swinging a drive deep right field going back. Makes the catch up against the wall. Now batting catcher William Contras. That’s a really nice job right there. Great awareness making the catch up against the wall. You see the perfect technique feeling for the wall with the bare hand while keeping his eyes on the baseball as it’s coming down. His glove in a good position to make the catch. That’s exactly how you do it. Yelich dives back in and now it’s William Contrus and safe. It’s a stolen base. That’s way outside and one and one. up the middle throws to first in time and that’ll do it. So it’s no runs, no base hits, no errors and one left on base. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Brewers two and the Padres’s nothing. Back here in San Diego, here’s the second base, Mason McCoy. McCoy in the air. Right field. Freely hauls it in for the out. Now batting the hitter. Luis Arise stands in. He’s over for one. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power on the corner for a strike. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So, when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage, now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he could put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something hit deep, it’s a popup and an easy out for the defense. Bogarts stands in now and watches strike one. Swing and a miss. Nice change up. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. And down on strikes and it’s a three up, three down inning. Padres’s go down quietly. They trail it here. Two nothing. Back here at Petco Park as we go to the top of the fourth. Up now for Milwaukee. S Freelick. That immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. Sliced hard but fouled. Outside corner got him looking. Well, I’m not really sure why he let that one go by. I mean, out of the hand, it had a lot of the strike zone. Sure, it had some good armside run at the end to move to the outside part of the plate, but with two strikes, you got to be ready to swing it there, and you can’t leave it in the umpire’s hands. number 21 in the box now as he looks at ball one. Second played appearance of the day for him. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004 and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. One down, base is empty. And they’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. Next for the Brewers, Jake Bowers. One for one with a single so far. right through there for a strike. Hard hit right side. Come on. Come on. On to first and Milwaukee is set down in order. Nobody left for Milwaukee, but they hold a two nothing lead. And we’re back. Bottom four now. The left fielder Gavin Sheets. Sheets. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one. You know, these Padres’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. Foul ball still 0 and two. And as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand. Out to short. Ortiz handles, throws to first. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting right fielder Raone. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. That one misses and that is ball one. The rest of the lineup could learn a thing or two from this at bat right here. He’s been patient and now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 200 count. And there’s a foul ball. Next pitch is outside. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. In the air, right field pretty well struck. That one’s deep up against the wall and brings it in. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Ryan O’Harn the next up for the Padres’s. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. This guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an 02 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch. Ball one low. One ball, one strike. The one-1 is fouled off. Next pitch way upstairs. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And it remains two and two. Ground ball right side and that’s just foul. Two two now. Fights it off. He’ll see another pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. The next offering misses and the count is filled up. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. That one the other way. Fair ball around first and hustling for second and he’s in with a stand up double. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the playbook. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Out in front and fouled to the left side. Fouled off. He was late. Down low. It kicks away. And on the wild pitch, he goes down to third. Have to be really sure you can make it safely to third when you’re in scoring position and two outs. Got to get that run across. Very important. Does a nice job of reading it. Gets to third base now just 90 ft away. Oh at third with two away. swings through it and that’s a strikeout. So, one hit is all they get. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Brewers two and the Padres’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top five, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Blake Perkins. Let’s go. Strike on the inside corner and it’s 0 and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. This one in the air center field. Johnson sizes this one up, hauls it in for the owl. Up next for Milwaukee, Joseph Ortiz up now for the Brewers. He popped out to the catcher. His first time up. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Base is empty, one away and we’re in the top of the fifth. bounced to third. The Glaciius slings to first in time. Now batting designated hitter Christian Yelich. Here’s Yelich at the dish. He’s already homerred here in this one. Clips the corner. That’s strike one. Next offering is fouled back. Two outs and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So runner at second, two down. Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. First offering misses badly for ball one. Oh, you got to give him credit out there on the mound. on this outing. Started off a little shaky, but he’s found a way to settle in and turned this into a pretty good start. Kind of shows you a lot about his mental makeup as a pitcher. Hard on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Brewers strand one. They’re up two nothing. Back here in San Diego, digging in is the switch in outfielder Bryce Johnson. Johnson, fouled off down the right side. You know, these Padres’s showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Starter’s leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is, but so far he’s been really effective in this one. Slings to first and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Good fade and sinking action of that change up got that hitter to roll over. Freddy Fine the next to hit. You know, sometimes it just takes getting to the bullpen in order to be able to score runs and that might be the case today. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. And that skips in the dirt. And that’s in the dirt. That one back up the middle and it gets through and the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Let that pitch get pretty deep on him. So I think he was looking to go the other way. It was off speed and inside though, so a good adjustment to shoot it back up the middle. Mason McCoy digs in now. Flyed to right his first time. Climbed the ladder with that fast ball. That’s strike one. Firm mean at first. One gone. San Diego Diego. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. Now batting the designated hitter. Luis Arise the next up for the Padres’s for two in this one. That’s in for a strike on the outside corner. One and one. Activity in the bullpen for the Brewers. Robert Gasser appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Prester the hardth throwing right-hander up as well. That misses the zone and the count is one and one. Way to lay off that pitch down. Gets a piece and stays alive. Got the dish. looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play. Boo. Swing and a high-fly ball. That one out towards left center field. Way back there. Out of here. He’ll take a trot around the bases. His second homer this series. And they lead it. It’s 3-2. Well, the best home runs are the ones that give your team the lead. That’s a great feeling right there. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Bruce Zimmerman done for the day. And it wasn’t his best start, but he kept them in it to this point. And we’ll come back with a new arm. Quinn Pier takes over on the mound. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Here’s Xander Bogarts. Struck out on just three pitches last time. On the ground and it goes just foul. That’s towards center. Perkins should have this one. Squeezes it. And there’s two down. Now batting leftielder. Now Gavin Sheets. One for two. And that drops in for a strike. One’s going to count. Laser could be trouble around first. heading for two into second and he’s got a double. Everything came together for him. He got a back door breaking ball. Really easy to give up on that pitch, but he stayed on it and shot it right back in the direction it was breaking from. Really nice job of letting it travel. So, a man aboard stepping in for San Diego. Raone Lauraniano and the first pitch misses for ball one. the strategy of winning a ball game when you can make that pitcher work a little more, expose himself by throwing pitches, that can be the key to winning perhaps later on. So, a good job of extending this inning, getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That’s going back some more and caught on the warning track. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now a 32 ball game back here at Petco Park. All set for the top of the six. Now it’s the second baseman Bryce Terang Vasquez back to work and he takes one right on the black. It’s 0 and one on the mound. He had a little trouble back in the first, but it’s been a different story the rest of the way. Really settled into this outing nicely. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. Now a fly ball to right center. Johnson settles underneath it. Makes the grab. One away. Now batting catcher William Contras. And now the catcher comes up to him. William Contraras. Contras 27 years old and he was born in Venezuela. First pitch not close. Well, it’s safe to say he won’t be getting invited to the charity golf tournament this off season. And now here’s the speed threat outfielder Sal Felick. S Freelick. Highfly ball out towards left field. Sheets on a dead sprint. Racing back. Won’t get to this one. It drops fouled. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn two quickly. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Swing and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. Makes the catch. Gliding onto the warning track. Now back then third base Caleb Durban. Now, the third baseman, he’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. There’s the strike up high and it’s 0 and one. Boo, this guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base pads. Got him. He’s notched four strikeouts now. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one man left. We go to the bottom half of inning number six. And the 567 slots do up. It’s the Padres’s three and the Brewers two. And we’re back. Bottom of the six. And here’s the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. Oh, that’s a ball. That’s down and in. That one misses. Three and0. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. Four pitches. That’s an easy walk, man. He could have walked me right there, boo. Last one wasn’t even close. Man at first. Next for the Padres’s, Jose Glaciius, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Swing and a base hit. Just kind of sliced that one into center. Up next for the Padres. Bryce Johnson. The next up for the Padres’s. Bryce Johnson. And a sack bun here. jumps, throws safe at first as they can’t make the play. Now batting catcher Freddy Fine. Freddy Fine the next up for the Padres’s. Golden opportunity right here. Fought off foul. The opportunity for a huge inning exists right here. Bases loaded, nobody out. But as a hitter, can’t be over anxious. That pitcher is up against the wall. Make him come to you. And now one. I need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup, something. But you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. That’s off the inside corner. And now three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Next offering is in for a strike. It’s a hitter. You don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2. Ripped on a line to center. Lays out and makes the play. Runners tag up from second and third. He’ll score on the sack fly. 42 now. He takes a huge gamble right there. If that ball gets by him, the run scores easily from second and the hitter maybe ends up on third. But a great job, excellent focus on the dive and he robbed extra bases on that one. Now it’s going to be Mason McCoy. First pitch misses. E Glacius on third. Johnson over at first with one away. Swinging a foul straight back. Two on, one out. Fly ball to right. Freighic has a beat on it. He’s there. He’s got it. Runner tags for home. He’s in to score on the sack fly and they’re up by three. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Now up now the Padre leadoff man. Luis Sas certainly a factor in this one thanks to his threerun blast back in the fifth. Well, definitely one of the most impactful swings of the game. A big reason why they’re working with the lead and looking to add to it right here. Boo. Runner on the go. Throw to second out there. And that ends the inning. The catcher definitely looked ready for that stolen base attempt. Got in position quickly and a strike down to second base to end the inning. We go to the top of the seventh. And now the first baseman, Jake Bowers. That one fouled off. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Movement in the bullpen. Wandi Peralta the left-hander is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Paveta warming up as well. Swing and a miss. Struck him out now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. Next for Milwaukee, Blake Perkins. Blake Perkins. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. The Brewers trailing by three here in the top half of inning number seven. And a foul ball. Oh, that got him as well. The third batter he’s hit with a pitch. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Randy Vasquez won’t go any further. They had a pretty good outing for him as he leaves with a nice lead. New pitcher when we get back. Here’s a new pitcher from the pen, Wandy Peralta. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. And the batter will be the shortstop, Joseph Ortiz. There you see how he’s doing down the stretch with his August and September splits. on the ground left side. Six, four, three, but he beats it. Good hustle and the inning continues. Well, an aggressive slide at second base, but it was legal. I like it because you’re trying to break up the double play and it looked like the slide impacted the throw a little bit. Nice job by the base runner. Here comes Christian Yelich. check swing and he went strike one. Let’s go. Not the best swing that time from the first round pick. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing anding miss and get through this at bat. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Slider got him for a strike three. So, a job well done from the Frier bullpen that time midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Padres’s five and the Brewers two. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Robert Gasser. He’s making his second appearance of the season. Now the DH for the Padres, Luis Arise. Hitter, Luis Arise. That pitch clips the outside corner. Strike one. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. Here’s Bogards. Now, you talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list, the shortstop, takes the ball, and you played behind guys, and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them, and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump. And defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Throws to second for one. Back to first. Double play and that’s it for the inning. Nothing across here this half. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Padres’s five and the Brewers two. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Nick Paveta 32 appearance. Leading off for the Brewers, left fielder Jackson Torio. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. The 1-1. That one missed. Swings through it for the K. Some high cheese for strike three. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss. And I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. Bryce Terang up now for the Brewers. Three flyyous already. He’s 0 for three. Swing and a miss. Strike one. late with the swing there, man. He was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. That misses the zone and it’s one and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So got to stay ready for it. Line drive and foul ball outside and a count now. Even up ripped on a line and that’s just foul. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. Just off the outside edge, and the count’s full. Really good take, especially with two strikes on the ground to first. O’Harn, he steps on the bag. He made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Contrarus in the box now. No balls in a strike. That one ripped but foul. Let’s go. swing and a miss and he got him and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three nothing doing for the offense that time home half of inning number eight straight ahead it’s the Padres’s five and the Brewers two bottom of the eighth Lauriano comes up to hit right fielder Rammon Loriano Yeah, that skips in the dirt. Swaying at a ball popped in the air and that’s a fair ball. Handled that down and in breaking ball very well. Oh, he saw the break early coming from the other side and just let it get deep enough and dropped the barrel on it at the very last moment. So, a man at first now. Here is Ryan O’Harn swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Snags it on the run. One down. Up next for the Padres, third base, Jose Jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s. One for three. Here’s the pitch. Runner on the go. There’s the ball. Throw safe. on the ground to third and that one handled. Throws to first. That’s out number two. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Bryce Johnson the next up for the Padres’s 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And that’s off the inside edge. One and0 runner at second. Two down. on the inside corner for a strike drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck into the dive and he got it. One of the most fun and exciting things you can do as an outfielder. You lay out, you make a diving catch, and you end the inning. That gets the team fired up in the dugout. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Ron Marinacio. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Now it’s the right fielder S. Freelick 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. That pitch gets the corner and that’s strike one. And it’s fouled away. That one in 95 missed up top. One and two to count. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Here’s the third baseman. 0 for three in this one. Ball one, no strikes. And another ball activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Robert Suarez, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Estrada getting cranked up as well. The Brewers trailing by three here in the top of the ninth. And it goes just foul. It’s so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball, but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach. Next pitch is outside. There’s the strike. fouled off again and it remains three and two. Now this is in the air down the line right there as Lauriano drops into the glove out number two. Now that is first base. So they’re down to their final out. Jake Bowers getting ready to hit. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one in there at the knees. Late swing fouled to the left. Marinacio is just one strike away. Oh, great stop. Gathers and throws and what a play. Ball game. When you win five in a row, the confidence just goes to another level and you start to gain this momentum and you think that you’re never going to lose a game again because things are clicking up and down the lineup. Pitchers are pitching, the team is making the plays defensively. This is the kind of feeling. It’s not going to last all season long, but you want to ride it as long as you possibly can. Perhaps push it up to double digits. And your final score, 52 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shi saying so long.
