🔴LIVE 🔴Washington Nationals VS Atlanta Braves /September 24/ /MLB THE SHOW 25
right just about ready for baseball and starting this one Chris Sale and Singy that may be his name but the strikeout is his game well Boo I can tell you’ve been working on that one but yes you are right this guy strike out for nine over 11 I mean that’s just getting it done there are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup and when you look at what he’s able to do man it’s going to be a fun one to watch today Nim Nunees the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. Atlanta. Liner to second and picked on the hop. Throw on to Olsen. One up, one down. And let’s take a look at the lineup. And something they’ve talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure. Chris, right now it’s not a club that gets on base enough. And sometimes, Boo, you just need a hitter to go up there and grind out and at bat, maybe have 11, 12 pitches, and all of a sudden, players get fired up in the dugout and they want to do the same thing. And before you know it, you start to get base runners on and you get a big hit and all of a sudden you ride that wave for a few days and go on a winning streak. That’s something they definitely could use. And that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds Lamar. One out. Base is empty. A short stop. Takes a ball way inside. [Applause] That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that appearance. Works the walk. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. And here is Andres Chaparo. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Music] Swing and a miss as he was out front that time [Applause] on the ground. Could be two offbalance feed. There’s one onto Olsen. That’s two. Nothing across here this half. And now the Braves will get their first crack at it. No score. Back here in Atlanta. And our pitcher tonight, McKenzie Gore. And Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a field difference between field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. On the ground, that one handled the throw to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Here’s Brian Snickers lineup for the Braves. All right, Sigy. How about all the talent in this lineup? They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Matt Olsen batting with one down. Takes the strike and that misses and the count even one and one and that drops in for a strike. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you could get hurt. This ball’s chopped on the ground. House tosses to first and Olsen is set down. Batting third, right fielder, Ronald Akuna Jr. And here is Ronald Akuna Jr. All around. I think if you asked anyone in this organization who’s the best hitter in the lineup, they would say him. Foul ball and a pitch. And ball one. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike. Two. One ball, two strike. up and in. And the count is two and two. This to third. House tosses to first and the Kuna retired. And it’s a one, two, three inning for the Braves. And the Braves go down quietly, scoreless after one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top of the second up now for Washington. Riley Adams. Get out of here. Sale back to work. And that one upstairs. Ball one. 10. Mike Filillmore, our played umpire, very consistent with his zone. Chris, gets a lot of praise for that. He does, Boog. And I think that with any umpire, you really just want them to be consistent. Filillmore’s a guy that does a good job back there in that way. So, people around the league really appreciate his consistency. just missed. That one catches the corner for a strike. I mean, that’s perfect location right on the black. And over and over again, this guy demonstrates the ability to hit those spots that are so tough to do anything with as a hitter. Got him. And that’s the first out. Oh man, just locked him up with that slider even though it caught a lot of the zone. And I think that tells you all you need to know about what he was looking for in the box and it clearly was not that pitch. Dylan Cruz in the box now. No balls in a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off and that’s in the dirt and the count is even. Two and two. [Music] Atlanta looked like it was a little bit up. Still just the second batter of the inning and on the mound. He’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. draws the walk there. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. So, a man at first. Now it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. Squirts away a little bit to second. pulls him off the bag. Cruz into scoring position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play possibility. Well, Boo not exactly making him earn it right now with the walk and now a wild pitch. He’s going to need to find a way to refocus out there, get back in the strike zone before this unravels on him. Runner at second here. One gone. Braves. just missed. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] And now the count is full and another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle and ball four two aboard. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there. But with first base open, walk not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. Two on, one out. Brady House digs in now and that drops in for a strike. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. And that’s in for a strike. Quickly down O2 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. Hard ground ball for a base knock. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single and it’s one- nothing. Well done. Drives in the run. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And stepping in is the speedy Jacob Young. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. First pitch just misses. Double kill. The inning. Right through there for a strike and that one is lifted in the air. Akuna after it brings it in and there’s two away. Batting ninth left fielder Robert Hassel II. Robert Hassel III digging in for the Nationals. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees. And doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. And they’re swinging a miss. One ball. Two on, two outs. And down on strikes he goes. Good job at damage control right there. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And we’re back. Bottom of the second. Azie Alb’s up to the plate. Azie Ali. Swung on. Belted. That’s back there. and it bangs off the top of the wall and that’s a leadoff double. He was all over that one. Showed off some really nice oppo pop with that swing and just couldn’t get it over the fence, but I absolutely love everything about that approach and the mechanics right there. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Stepping in, Hassan Kim. And a strike. Well, Kim is one of those players that it’s just hard to take your eyes off of him. And not many players in the 2023 World Baseball Classic had more fun than he did. He hit a grand slam in a win against China and earlier in the tournament had a two homer game. Delivered some special moments for Korea. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back. That one is gone. Oh, muscle to center field. It’s his sixth home run of the season. And they jump ahead in the second. It’s 2-1. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. [Applause] That’s as big as it gets right there. You take advantage of a mistake. That is an ultimate. Here it is. Watch it. I’m going to jog around the bases. Drake Baldwin getting ready to hit. That’s off the mark and it’s one and0. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. Bottom half of inning number two. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. Next pitch downstairs. Ball two. [Music] And that skips in the dirt and he walked him. [Applause] Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Here comes Ozuna up to the plate. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. Nobody out. Runner at first. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Ground ball right side and that’s just foul. [Music] Here’s the pitch to Ozuna. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One away. Typically that high fast ball, if it’s close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter, if he’s prepared for it, can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end, which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. Here’s the center fielder, Michael Harris. I second. Gore checks over to first and he’s back. [Applause] Fought off foul. in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Keeps the at bat going with a foul ball. Baldwin the base runner at first with one out way outside. Going to count one and two. There’s a swing and a drive. This one looks like trouble. Lead runner touches second, headed for third. Headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Nacho Alvarez Jr. will hit next. And that misses one and0. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. That’s hard hit in the line. And this one looks like trouble. Harris around third. He’ll score. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Breaking ball down and in. He did a nice job of just catching out in front. I like that he didn’t spin off the ball by opening up that front hip too early. Now batting Juriken Proar first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning. And this is where you want to just max out. Get as much as you can. Give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one. Right through there for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. A really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. [Applause] Swinging a miss. Now one and two. One of the better pitches he’s thrown in this game, but he just hasn’t been able to do it enough unfortunately. You know, he could be getting a feel for that slider, though, so maybe that’s something he can build off of. Man, it’s second. Swang and a line drive. And that’s a base hit into right field. The run comes in from second and he’ll reach second with one away. That’s a good job right there. You got two strikes on, you just got to battle. [Applause] one out, runner at second. And here’s the first baseman, Matt Olsen. He’s 0 for one. And that one misses up and in. Ball one. and a swing and a miss. Well, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. One out and a runner at second. And that one in the air center field. Young makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting right fielder Ronald Akuna Jr. So a man aboard at the plate. Ronald Akuna Jr. That’s outside and that’s ball one. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Runner at second. Two down. Gets a piece and stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Right through there. Got him. Inning ends and that stops the bleeding. So, five runs in the inning as they bat around. We play two full. It’s the Braves five and the Nats one. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s a speed threat. Nasim Nunes. Nunes. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. You know, these Nationals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working. Got a change up and a pretty good one, too. Outside corner, but he just got extended and put the barrel on it. Showed has a lot of plate coverage on that swing right there. Here’s CJ Abrams now. out towards right center. That’s well struck and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases in to score from first. It’s 52. Comes through with the RBI. Everything was mechanically sound with that swing right there. I mean, that’s pretty much what you’re wanting to replicate with every rep you take. You want good balance, barrel directly to the baseball, and good long extension after contact out in front of home plate. Man, there are a lot of doubles in a swing like that. And now the first baseman, Andres Chaparo. 0 for one so far. That missed by a lot. Ball one. And a swing and a miss there. Abrams stands at second with no outs. That’s in there. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. [Applause] Sale in a one-two and a foul ball. He stays alive. Man at second in the dirt but kept close. Abrams up to third on the wild pitch. Even with a good secondary lead, sometimes it’s hard to see just how far that ball’s gotten away from the catcher. And if you can make it to third base, pretty much standing up. Well, that time he seemed to have a pretty good read, gets to third safely, and now he’s just 90 ft away from scoring. Next pitch is downstairs. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock. Runner from third comes across and it’s an RBI single and now just a two-run deficit. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go up. And right there we see the result. Man at first, nobody out. Riley Adams now at the plate. Swang and a highf fly ball hit in the air left center field. This one’s got a chance and that one is out of here. He flexes his power with that swing. His ninth homer of the year and we’re level. It’s 55. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Now a chance for Dylan Cruz. swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. Well, a really rough inning out there on the mound and uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy’s toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. So up next, Paul De Young. Close, but called a ball. And that is ball one. Four runs already in the frame. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. And another ball. Go Chris through the early stages. He hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. One down, base is empty. Swing and a miss as he was out front. tied up here in the early going. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Music] That’s down and in. A slider missed. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. That one down the line and it goes just foul. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next inside and that’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. Second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. House just 21 years old, a former first round pick in 2021. Strike one. [Music] Late with the swing there. just threw that fast ball by him, elevated, and if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Tunnneled that pitch. thought it was going to be a slider breaking in off the plate, but it hugged the corner. And at that point, when he recognized it, it was just too late. Jacob Young digging in for the Nationals. Fly to right his first time. Tap foul at the plate. Two outs. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Ozuna ranging after it. Stretches out and hauls it in. So, four runs on four hits, no errors, and a runner left on. We head now to the home half of inning number three. We’re all tied up 55. Back at Truis Park, here is Aussie Alb’s up to him. Aussie Alb and the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, these Braves showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Not only have they already put up a bunch of runs on the board, but they’ve also made the starter work really hard out there. And a curve misses outside. Like I said, his pitch count is high, so I got to expect they’ll be turning to their bullpin sooner than they had hoped. That one misses. And now 3 and 0. That one misses. So a lead off walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. So now to the plate for Atlanta. Hassan Kim. He’s already homerred in this game. Here goes the runner. Swing and a miss. Throw and they got him. Such a quick and fast swing of emotions right there. You get the runner on with the walk, which is great, but then picks a bad pitch to go on and you just erase the free pass that you were issued. I understand you want to be aggressive. You want to try to get in the scoring position, but you just have to be a little smarter there. Here we go. And the slider catches the zone. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Quick reactions down there at first and those can be tougher than they look sometimes. There could be all kinds of weird spin or knuckling action on the baseball. And next for Atlanta, Drake Baldwin. He walked and came around to score his first time up. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Swings and sends a rocket to right. Cruz hauls it in to end the inning. Braves go down quickly here and this remains a five5 ball game. Back here in Atlanta as we go to the top of the fourth and now here’s a speed threat outfielder Robert Hassel the third in for a strike. Good slider. [Applause] Ripped to short over to first. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting the designated hitter, Nasim Nunees. Nasim Nunees digs in now. One for two. Ground ball Olsen and he handles it himself for the out. This is important. And if he can go one, two, three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Goodness, I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. And I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. Next offering is in for a strike. And that’s downstairs and outside. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Nothing doing for Washington. This ball game still tied. Five all. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the fourth. Marcelo Zuna coming up to hit there. There’s the strike. All count. turned on but foul wide of third [Laughter] and the 02. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Swaging a ball. Hit out towards left center field. One down. Now batting. So digging in, Michael Harris. I second doubled in his first AB. [Music] Popped up to the left into foul ground. House settles under it and makes the catch. And there are two down. Al batting number 67 Nacho Alvarez Jr. next up for the Braves doubled his first time. Let’s go. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. And now two balls in a strike. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. That one in for a strike. Two and two. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. Nothing doing here this half. We played four. We’re all tied up 55. Hursten Waldruff comes on now. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Andreas Chaparo. swaging out field and a almost a loud start to the inning on that first pitch. Man, he’s going to want that one back. No doubt. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Riley Adams. He’s already homerred here in this one. In there for strike one. Movement in the bullpen. Tyler Kinley to go. Lee warming up as well. All tied up and we’re at the top of the fifth. The next offering misses and now it’s even one and one. Adams tries to hold up appeal to first and yes he offered at it. Adams checks his swing. Now it’ll appeal to first and he held back according to Rusty Valentine on the ground to the left and foul ball. One down, base is empty. Not close with that one and it’s a full count. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fast ball, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. And now the right fielder Dylan Cruz. A strike out and a walk off the mark there. And that’s ball one. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Two out space is empty. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball, right? Could catch up. Cover plenty of distance there. And that is that. Gore back to work. Swing and a ball rip right field. That one back and that one is gone. That should put a jolt into this home crowd. And the Braves have the lead now. It’s 6-5. He sent the first pitch over the wall. Must have dinner reservations cuz he wasn’t wasting any time at the plate in that at bat. [Applause] That’s an incredible job of letting that breaking ball get deep, trusting your hands, and driving it out the other way. That’s how you practice it in the cage. Incredible when you can translate it into the ball game. Here’s Matt Olsen down for two in this one. And that one hammered ranging back. Bangs off the wall. into second and he’s got a double. Wastes no time there. It’s so close to blasting that one out of here the other way. But now that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. Let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. McKenzie Gore departs and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Jake Irvin takes over on the mound. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Here’s Akuna now. So Boo, here’s an interesting fact about Akunia. He has the most home runs at Truest Park. He passed Freddy Freeman for the top spot in 2023. And I think he might hold that record for a while. No outs. Runner on second on the inside corner for a strike. [Applause] [Applause] swing and a miss. Had him way out front of the slur. And here comes Azie Alb’s to the dish. So the way these two teams have battled in this game, you know, you need more. Got to continue to add runs if you’re going to get out of here with a win. [Applause] Pitch misses there. One and0. One out and a runner at second. Last half of inning number five. That one fouled off. [Applause] misses off the inside. And that’s ball two. That one missed. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Foul ball and it remains a full count. And ball four, two aboard. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Now in for the Braves. Hang Kim. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. That pitch in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Slapped hard the other way but foul at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo. Two on, one out. The shorts stop takes a ball. [Music] lined into left center. Should be extra bases. One runs in around third. Across is the runner from first. Now a three-run game. It’s 85. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. Double into the gap and that was a really nice swing to beat the inside pitch. He just beat him to the spot. kept his hands tight inside that baseball and that just allowed him to drive it into the alley right there. Now it’s the Atlanta catcher, Drake Baldwin. That’s a laser base hit. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they lead by four. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Just a solid swing right there. caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. One gone runner at first. So now to the plate for Atlanta, Marcelo Zuna that clips a corner and it’s even up to Ozuna. [Applause] They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Really good swing right there. You got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws on the ground and that’s just foul. Climb the ladder with that fast ball and the count is 0 and two. Ripped to third and caught. Throw behind the runner. They’ve got him doubled off. So, it’s four runs, five hits, no errors, and one left. We’re through five, Braves nine, and the Nationals five. New inning getting started now. Here is Paul De Young. Waldrip measures 6’2 in 23 years old. He’s playing today in his home state of Georgia and first off Ring is fouled off. This is a very important inning here. After scoring all those runs, you want your pitcher to come out and just mow them down. The offense has worked hard. It’s shut down inning time. And that one fouled off. Up and in at the count one and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Well, pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast ball. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls. But because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. Hard hit right side, takes it himself and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the Nationals, center fielder Jacob Young. Two out, space is empty. Next to hit, Jacob Young. All over the first pitch fast ball right there, but just a little bit out front. Got to let it travel just a bit more. Outside low. One and one. Just missed. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Come on. Towards first. And that one finds its way through. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Next to hit for the Nats, Robert Hassel the third. Not close. Atlanta. Two outs. Swang get a ball popped up. Alb’s makes the grab and that is that. So one hit is all they get. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. Braves nine and the Nationals five. Back at Truis Park. Well, we go bottom six now in for the Braves. Nacho Alvarez Jr. First pitch misses. Action in the pen down there. Number 16 looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Number 78, a right-hander listening up as well. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Abrams throws to first in time. One up, one down. Up next for the Braves, designated hitter Jerickson Profar. Here’s Proar now. It was a homer for him back in the fifth. Just a solo shot, but an important swing in this game. Yeah, and it was a beautiful swing as well. Everything just came together timing wise and he blasted it out of here. Profar who hails from Kurissau same place that produced Andrew Jones [Music] and there’s a foul ball. [Music] One down. Base is empty. And that’s downed away. Fouls it off. Still one and two. And a swing and a miss. Two down. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Olsson in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike and that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Two down, nobody on and that’s a strike out. Mike Filillmore says he went around. Braves are set down one, two, three as they can add to their 95 lead. Back here in Atlanta. And now the DH Nim Nunees. Nasim Nunes. [Music] swings and misses. 0 and one. That to right and that’ll fall for a base hit. man aboard on the leadoff single. CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals and first offering is fouled off. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. The 01 and it’s fouled away. And that one misses up and in. Now one and two. Cut on and miss. Curve ball struck him out. [Applause] Now batting Andre Chaparo digging in for the Nationals. Foul ball there. Nunes over at first with one away. Let’s go Braves. Swung on. Popped up on the infield. Alvarez settles under this one. Hauls it in for the out. Two away now. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Here’s the catcher, Riley Adams. Now batting catcher Riley Adams. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Two outs. And that’s way high. And that’s ball two. You got two balls, one strike. That’s ball three. Popped foul out of play off to the right. The Nets down by four here in the top half of inning number seven. cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. So one left for Washington. They trail it by four. It’s 95. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. number 78. He last pitched two days ago. And now it’s Ronald Akuna Jr. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. That one hammered but pulled fouled. and a big swing and a miss. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Albees in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom of the seventh. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. That’s back there and it’s out of here. his 17th of the year. And they add a run. It’s 105. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. [Applause] Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. Took a direct path to the ball. Excellent extension and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. So up next, Hassang Kim. [Applause] That’s in there. Strike one. That’s the third house. Throw to first in time. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. And now the catcher comes up to him. Drake Baldwin. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center and it hits the fence and he’s got a double. Everything came together for him. Anytime you smoke a ball off the wall, you kind of think about what it could have been, but obviously you have to be happy with that result. So runner at second, two down. Here’s Marcelo Zuna. One for three and a foul ball. And that is out of play. Baldwin at second with two down. Got him looking. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s down to five at 105 now. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Pierce Johnson. and he’s got a nice lead to work with. So, he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Now, it’s the right fielder, Dylan Cruz. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. inside and it’s one and0. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat. Now, this ball is well hit. This one’s got a chance. Out of here. His second homer this series. And they cut into the lead. It’s 106. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That was one of those home runs where you really don’t know if he got enough of it off the bat. I mean, he put a good swing on it clearly, but I wouldn’t say he really got the sweet spot on the bat. The exit vo wasn’t anything too impressive, but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows. And now it’s going to be Paul De Young. And that one lifted in the air center field and it’s caught for the out. Now batting third baseman Brady House. And now up for Washington, Brady House. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. One down, base is empty. And a foul ball and misses inside. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too. Two. He’s already seen the curve ball couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. Just missed. Really good take, especially with two strikes in the air. pretty deep out to center field. Harris after it. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting the center fielder, Jacob Young. Jacob Young digging in for the Nationals. Singing, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. That completes the strikeout. Inning over, but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s now a 106 ball game. Back after this on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Number 16 bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Michael Harris II getting ready to hit. Michael Harris. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boog, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Next offering is in for a strike. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Yeah. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kate into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Got him. And one gone. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity activity in the Washington bullpen, Clayton Beater appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Parker getting loose as well. Next offering is outside. swings through that one for strike two. One ball, two strike. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. And there’s a ball. That one misses and that’s ball three. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Proofar stands in here, takes ball one low. Fast ball for a strike. And the count one and one. [Applause] And that one upstairs. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. And that misses. They’re now three in one. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. That one hops against the fence in safely with a double. His second of the day. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. So, runner at second, two down. And next for Atlanta, Matt Olsen. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Ball one there. Come on, Atlanta. The one in the air out towards left center and the inning is over. Braves strand one as the lead holds at 10 to six. And we’re back. We go to the ninth. Here’s the left fielder, Robert Hassel. I third. Johnson back to work. Johnson a 62 righty. He throws a curveball, a fourseamer, and occasionally uses a cutter. activity in the bullpen. Bryce Elder up and loosening in the pen. Wilds also throwing. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Swings and misses. That’s strike two. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Brings it in. One away. Nunes. He’s two outs away. Next is the DH, a switch hitter, Nasim Nunees. First offering and it just misses. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Johnson fires and strike two. The Nationals down by four here in the top of the ninth. That one not close. Two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Next one misses. Three and two now. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Baldwin on the move, reaching for it. Makes the catch. shortstop CJ Abs. So they’re down to their final out up now for Washington. CJ Abrams. This one in the air. Alvarez in position. He’s got it. Ball game. And the Braves slug their way to a win in this one. nine wins in a row. It’s such a good feeling right now with this club that no one wants to be the player that causes the team to lose. In fact, they’re looking at ways each player every day they come to the ballpark. How can I help us win today? And this is a great feeling. It’s like being in the playoffs when individual statistics don’t matter. It’s all about the team W. Final score here today 106. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
