Max Domi 1 on 1 with Ryan Leslie
Uh, Max, first of all, our condolences on the passing of your grandfather, Harold. Uh, I know it’s been a tough start for you, but to have that personally, I wonder if there’s a memory or moment that you’d like to share about him because, uh, reading your post and just kind of hearing about your relationship a little bit, get a sense of just how close you were. Yeah. First of all, congrats on the new gig. We’re very excited to have you here. But, uh, you know what, it’s it’s one of those things that it puts things in perspective for sure. And, uh, he was a guy that was around from literally day one, every single step of the way. um obviously hockey career but then personal career as well and um he’s rock of our whole family. So I think every little memory I mean I could stand here for an hour and talk about him but just seeing the look on his face whenever our whole family would be together that’s something that uh means a lot to me and and he’s a special special guy and definitely be uh be thinking about him all year this year. No doubt. I thought your words on your post were fantastic um that you’ll no doubt keep with you throughout this season now that uh you’re back on the ice today which was a great sign for you. How do you kind of gauge this? I know. Um probably not overly concerned with whatever was ailing you, but just the idea of kind of getting back out there with the guys, especially considering what you’ve been going through. How how big was today? It was great. Feel feel awesome. I think the main thing is is the mental side. Being out there with all the guys and being in the meetings with them and working out with them and warming up and all that stuff like that’s that’s what it’s all about. The on stuff is is definitely important, but I think just being thrown into the team atmosphere again is is the best. I know there’s a lot of talk in this market about where you’re going to play. I would imagine you as a pro at this many years in the league, I’ll play wherever you want me to play as long as I’m out there with the guys and contributing. So, is there anything different about this year uh for you personally? I know there were so many lessons uh taken away from that series against Florida that as a group you’ll you’ll try and utilize, but how about for you personally? Is there anything different about this year for you? Um, yeah, absolutely. I think the the common theme every year the goal is the same. Well, I win a Stanley Cup. Um, and everyone says that and talks about and thinks about it, but it’s it starts now, you know, and uh you start preparing for those games down in in in the spring by having a great training camp and and really building good habits throughout the throughout the group, building chemistry and all that. And I think our team did an awesome awesome job of that last year. We’re going to park it and uh we added some new pieces. So, the faster we can get to our game, I know everyone talks about it, but uh it’s it’s so important. So, just doing my part in that and wherever I’m asked to play, I I’m I’m just I’m happy to help the team out in whatever whatever role that might be and and I’ll give it my best every single night. Last one for you, and I don’t know if it’s too early to tell, uh, but observing and being out there with them, have you got a sense of what this team is identity-wise? I know you’re bigger, and I know you have some real familiar faces, but you mentioned the the newer guys as well. So, can you get a sense yet of what this team is trying to be? We’re going to be a fast, big, strong team that that plays with energy every single night and we’re going to be hard to play against. I think that’s that’s the key is is teams are are going to know uh when they see our our team on the schedule that it’s going to be a tough night. And again, that’s another thing you could say, but you got to back it up. And that starts with the habits in practice. That starts with competing against your buddies. Uh I mean, even though they’re on your team, you got to help him get better just so he can help you get better as well. and and that’s hard to do, but you do it every single day for the course of a whole season, you’re setting yourself up for success. Well, we wish you the best of luck in preseason into the regular season. Thanks for stopping by. Thanks, buddy.

Ryan Leslie is the best thing to happen in Leafs media since Joe Bowen.
