Jordan Poole on joining New Orleans | Pelicans Training Camp 2025
So, uh, kind of just some of your takeaways from first day of training camp. Just trying to, you know, see where you fit in with these guys. Um, I don’t think fit will be a problem. Just excited to get on the court, go through some things as a team. Um, the energy is always good on the first day. So, you know, just trying to be sharp. Uh, trying to get our chemistry right and, um, you know, first, uh, first day of train training camp. So, we’re excited. And Willie and Trey mentioned that you stepped in and been really vocal early on. Was that kind of a focus for you coming in? Uh, I mean, you know, just whatever it takes to help the team. If there’s some little details that I could, uh, you know, offer offensively, defensively, something that will help us as a team, I’ll I’ll be sure to mention it. But, um, if anybody has anything to help us, not us a little bit, um, feel free to speak up. I think that’s a, you know, the vibe that we have in the gym right now. What do you think of the vibes from day one uh, here? Cuz I mean, you’ve been part of a couple training camps now. What did you think of the vibe and how these guys are meshing through this practice today? Yeah, it’s good. It’s cool. So, I think um a lot of guys mentioned just in media day how good of a group this is, how good the energy is, um how well we get along with each other. So, I think the vibes were good. I think we’re just ready to get back on the court. You know, we’re a competitive team. Guys want to get going early. So, just trying to find a way to expedite our learning process, our learning curve a little bit. Not that you, you know, can compare something on day one, but when you started, you were at a championship caliber team. Last year, obviously a rebuilding team. When you look at the talent here, what do you think of where it could be between maybe those two pendulums? Uh, I mean, that’s a good good example. I would put this right in the middle. You got a lot of guys who are growing, a lot of guys who are talented, a lot of guys who are hungry. Um, a lot of guys have been in the league for a little bit and I was on the team with um, a lot of young guys first year, second year in the league, so they were doing a lot more learning. These guys have experienced the league a couple times, been in the playing, fighting for playoffs. Um, and we’re all around the same age, so we get to grow together. um you know, learn the game together. Uh a lot of that is big on the court. So, very talented. Uh we’ve got to find ways to continue to put pieces together and it’ll be um you know, process all year. For you personally, what does it feel like to be on the team winning? I love it. I mean, it’s kind of been my u a part of my identity my entire career, high school, college, winning championships. So, it feels good to, you know, be back and play some winning basketball for sure. What is it like for uh just being able to share a practice go with them again? It’s good. Definitely. Uh just giving like old old time sake. I’ll look at him. I’ll laugh a little bit. Joe tell him in the locker room. Seven years ago I was like Jeremiah. I was a young fell. He saw me as a young fella. So now he’s kind of looking at me as a vet and it’s uh it’s probably pretty interesting for him to see probably a proud big brother. What’s it like just just being out there with Zeke kind of seeing what he looks like early on? It’s good. Me and Z play a little bit in the in the summertime. Um two different positions but we have gravity. We both can play make. We want to play make winning plays for our team. So, um only positive things to say honestly, obviously it’s the first day, but um continue to keep working, continue to keep pushing and gaining chemistry with each other. How much do you welcome the task of, you know, providing like crucial floor space to, you know, some others like Zion when when you’re out there? I mean, I think that’s a big reason on why they brought me over here, why they acquired me. Um you know, me and Zion can kind of play off each other. I’ll play more in the perimeter, bring a lot of defenders out, which is opening up the paint. He plays in the paint, which brings players to the paint, bro. I’ll give him an outlet, something to kick, but also with Trey, even her being able to stretch the floor a little bit, haul other guys being able to shoot the floor. So, our dynamic is really good. Feels pretty natural. Um, we just got to get some reps under our belt. What do you think of the versatility that you have when you’re out there with like Zion, Pervvis, right? Just the all the different things you can do on both ends of the floor. I mean, extremely versatile. We got a all first team defender. We got a lot of guys who can score the ball. Um, a lot of playmakers and guys who’ve been in this league. So, uh, when you put all four of those characteristics together, you uh, you can get a positive formula for sure. What’s the process been like? You just learn the terminology, you play calls, all that kind of stuff with a new coaching staff. I mean, I’ve been I asked as soon as I got trained, I asked for a lot of terms offensively, defensively, what plays you ran, what sets he ran, so I can get a little bit familiar. So, coming into training camp, uh, got a decent idea of what we run. Um, and then more so just trying to get guys to play more naturally, more freely off the ball, everything isn’t going to be so scripted. Um, when we have guys who are as talented as we are, especially on the offensive end. So, as much as we want to run plays and execute, we also got to be able to uh just play naturally, play freely, and read off each other. So, it’s a nice little balance mix that we’re looking for. What do you What do you expect from yourself on the defense? Bro, nice mustache, bro. I didn’t see it at first. like what what do you feel about uh the yourself on the defensive side of the ball? I feel good. I mean, we got guys who can guard, we got guys who’ve been to less who know the patterns. Um I had a careerhigh in steals last year. So, a lot of these guys are also telling me like we’ll cover you up, you know, be be aggressive, be in the passing lane. Um use your anticipation skills. And then I have Herb on the backside or Luon who’s a solid defender. We got Trey who’s solid, right? So, we got guys who even Miy who’s extremely athletic to go clean up the board. So, um, very much a tandem defense, but it’s easier when you got guys who are on the same page. Um, and the patterns are, you know, in tune because it’s a team team, uh, team defense. So, um, I feel I feel good. Coming from a situation in in Washington where, you know, I mean, may have been looked at as as somewhat of a a rebuilding team and now on a roster that, you know, has postseason expectations. Is that somewhat refreshing for you to be on a team that, you know, might be able to to compete a little better than the situation you’ve been in the last few years? Definitely. You hit it right on the nose. I mean, bro, that’s what I’m supposed to say. Yes. Appreciate you, dude. Thank you. after.
