🔴LIVE 🔴Miami Marlins VS Philadelphia Phillies/ September 24 / Baseball TV/MLB THE SHOW 25
after this. Just about ready to go. Today’s starting pitcher, Christopher Sanchez singing. He’s been outstanding and should be fun to watch. Well, he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning, which is really good, especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two, three, maybe even four times in a start. So, just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is. We’ll see if it’s that way in this one. And at the plate for Miami, Otto Lopez swing and a tapper that rolls foul and that’s off the inside edge. Now one and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Fights it off. You’ll see another spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another shorts stop. Takes a ball. [Music] This one popped up. Gets under it. And it’s caught for the out. And time now for the Marlins lineup. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now. Augustine Ramirez and Boo. He’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man. They took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So, watch out when he steps in. Augustine Ramirez now in the box. Comes up empty with a swing there. Ground ball to Bow. Zips it to first. Two quick outs in the top of the first here tonight. Batting third center number 87. Two outs. Space is empty. Jacob Marcy. The next up for the Marlins. What a season it’s been for him. He has supplied a lot of power and that average in there for strike one. Two outs. Base is empty. And there’s a ball. That one’s in there. That is strike two. Pretty rare location right there. Right down the middle. This guy paints the edges. I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Foul tip into the mid. Struck him out. Nothing doing for the Marlins. Phillies coming up to hit. No score. Major League Baseball is on the show back here in Philadelphia. And our pitcher tonight, Edward Cabrera. Chris, what should we keep an eye on here with him? Well, that whip is just below the league average. And that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. We go to the bottom of the first and now for the Phillies. Harrison Bader. That one’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Bader. Guy who played his college ball at the University of Florida from the New York area. Went to Horus Man High School. On the ground to third go. zips it across and Bader is set down. And time now for the Phillies lineup. And with their ace on the mound today, they’re just looking to provide him a little bit of run support and they’ll see what they can do for him. Boo, you have to be really careful when you’ve got a guy like this on the mound for you to not become a spectator. You know that he doesn’t give up a whole lot, but sometimes guys get a little too comfortable and don’t have an urgency to score runs. You have to make sure you put him in a situation where he can get the W, but also you guys can cruise to the finish line and not have to worry about a comeback in the end. A change up missing. One and one. I got a ball. One strike. Nope. That’s inside. One out. Base is empty. liner and this could be trouble now. He’ll turn it for second and he’s in there. It’s a first inning double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. And now it’s Alec Bow. There’s the strike. Schwarber leads off second with one gone in the inning. And a swinging miss. [Music] And now one and two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. out to short Lopez to first and they got him. Batting fourth designated hitter Brandon. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Brandon Marsh steps to the plate. He’s done a great job making contact recently hitting better than 350 this month. Close but called a ball. Ball one. And that’s in there at the knees. A strike. Runner at second. Two down. [Music] That misses the zone. Two and two. Just off the outside part of the plate. Really good take especially with two strikes. JT Realm Muto in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Good zip on that fast ball at the bottom of the zone. If he’s there all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the hitters. Man on second, two down. Got him. Dave Lawrence rings him up. The Phillies turned away their first time around. Inning number two coming up from Citizens Bank Park. No score. All set for the start of the inning. And here is Connor Norby. Norby. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. The lefty fires. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. Stepping in, Ariberto Hernandez. Running for a strike. Rio Muto throws not in time. It’s a stolen base. That was close. But Stackcast shows us why he so often seems to be on the safe side of these steel attempts. Chris. Yeah, you see that plus speed and he needed every last bit of it to swipe that bag. Such a threat on the bases. Man at second out in front and foul to the left side. Next one is off the plate. Going to count one and two. Strike him out. Stays alive. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. That one the other way. And foul ball and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, not every great at bat ends in a hit. He saw a lot of pitches. That kind of an at bat can be contagious to a lineup. Xavier Edwards. Xavier Edwards the next to hit. Let’s go. That one outside and it’s one and0 and that one clips the corner. Dave Lawrence behind the plate today. Consistent and pretty accurate with the balls and strikes. Yeah, he’s one of those guys, Spook, that just keeps the game moving. Nothing overly unique about the strike zone that he calls and as a result, he’s appreciated by both sides. Bounce to the right. Takes it to the bag. steps on first and it’s out number two batting seven first base number 33. So the go-ahead run in scoring position next to hit Eric Wagaman. He’s been tearing it up at the plate recently batting over 300 so far this month. Hard hit right side. slings to first. That’s out number three. Marlins leave one. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom half of inning number two. And now it is JT Riomuto Cabrera back to work and that drops in for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count in the dirt and one and one. One and that’s downed away. This hitter’s looking for a fast ball, but I’m not sure he’s going to get one. Pitcher doesn’t have to challenge him. If he feels better about his off speed secondary stuff, then stay with it. Next pitch is outside. Just doesn’t seem to want to throw him a fast ball. And that one ripped into right. base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Batting six. Now, batting Max Kepler. Max Kepler. [Applause] Let’s go Phillies. rolled softly, but that goes foul. Rio Mutoo gets his lead at first with nobody out. Well, pretty clear to me he was trying to go deep right there, but you got to get it. This one swung on and hit well way back there. Bangs off the wall. Lead runner around second. And he’s got a double. Headed for the plate. The relay throw and he’s out easily. Batting seventh, second baseman, Weston Wilson. [Applause] So digging in now for Philadelphia, Weston Wilson. That one’s in there. 0 and one. One out and a runner at second. Bottom half of inning number two. That’s too low. And it’s one and one. High in the air out to right. Meyers makes the grab and there’s two gone. Batting eight. The short stop. Bryson Stock. This is Bryson Stock singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. [Applause] And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] Phillies. Late swing fouled to the left. [Music] swaying at a ball popped in the air. Lopez makes the play and the inning is over. Philly strand one will move to the third with no score. Back here, Citizens Bank Park. And now here is Griffin Conine. Conine, 27 years old, and he was a second round pick back in 2018. Line drive caught. That at bat is a positive sign, even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. He hit the ball hard, but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. And now the right fielder, Dane Meyers. He’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases. Chris, that’s a strike. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So, you know you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. and is Oh, this one high and deep way back there and it bangs off the out of town scoreboard and that’s a double. He was all over that one. Put a really nice balanced swing on it and when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box and he’ll feel real good about that one. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So the lineup flips over and now Otto Lopez delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] Top of the third, no score. Move to second. Meyers back on a dive. So now the injury forcing a substitution at second base and on to run for Miami, Javier Senoha. outside low and that’s ball two. gets a piece and stays alive. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. One out and a runner at second. Little bit low. And ball four to a board. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there. But with first base open, walk not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. Two on, one out. Augustine Ramirez digs in now. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. That one catches the corner. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Two on, one out. And that one is downstairs. And the count is one and one. Way to lay off that pitch down. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single on the board first. It’s one zip. Mission accomplished there as he picks up the RBI to give him the lead. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And a dangerous hitter coming to the plate. Marcy getting ready to hit. There’s the strike. [Applause] Come on now. outside with a breaking ball. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Ruers at the corners. One away. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Breaking ball misses down and away. Two balls, two strikes. And that one popped in the air. Left field. Bader in and to his right. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting third base Conor Norby. [Applause] So here’s the cleanup hitter Connor Norby. One for one with a single so far. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And that’s in there for strike one. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. That one outside and it’s two and one. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. And that is out of play. That one misses and the count’s full. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Swings and sends a rocket to right. Drops into the glove and that’s the third out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now one- nothing. Back at Citizens Bank Park and stepping in is the speedy number four. in the first pitch misses for ball one. Ah, that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. Leading off for the Philly. So, the Philly batting order turns over and the batter now Harrison Bader grounded out his first time. [Applause] That one drifts inside. [Applause] Not even close there. And the count now two and nothing. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. just missed. Kyle Schwarber in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] This one drilled right center field. That one heading for the fence and gone. [Applause] And that’s how they take the lead. It’s 21. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. [Applause] Kyle Schwarber comes up to hit here. Doubled his first time and that’s downstairs. One and0. Can be tough to bounce back after big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. You’re in the last half of the third. Next offering is in for a strike. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. This one smoked on its way out of here. He’ll touch them all. Home run number 55 on the year. And they tack one on the board. It’s 3-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Back-to-back homers always a special feeling at the ballpark, especially if it’s your team that does it and those guys get to slap hands at home plate. This is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club. And here comes Alec Bow swinging a ground ball. Slings it across. Finally gets the first out here on the grounder. Now batting the designated hitter, Brandon March. And now it’s the cleanup spot for the Phillies. Brandon March. He struck out swinging at his first at right through there for a strike. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Still only one out here in the inning. right side hard hit and he takes it himself for the out. Now batting catcher JT Ruto. Two down, base is empty. It’ll bring up JT Real Muto a single his first time. And ball one. Fast ball right back to the mound. Inning over. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working and this is now a 31 ball game. Back after this on the show. Out of the fourth, here’s the left fielder, Ariberto Hernandez. Hernandez. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Tap foul at the plate. You know, these Marlins doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient bats out of him. He’s only given up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. Hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely, but you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after it. Edwards stands in now. Looks at that one inside. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. One down. Base is empty. Outside. That’s a ball. Love coming to Citizens Bank Park. Best ice cream in all of the league at the press level. It’s only been around since 2004, but plenty of awesome history here already. It’s the only stadium with multiple postseason no hitters. Remember Roy Hall did it back in 2010 and the Houston Astros threw a combined no- no in game four of the 2022 World Series. And that one a little below the knees. Three and two now. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Two outs, space is empty. And here’s the first baseman. Eric Wagaman 0 for one so far. Right through there for a strike. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Battling here as he fouls it away. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Come on. And they’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on on the outside corner. Got him looking. Miami down in order. Score holds. It’s 3-1. [Applause] Back here in Philadelphia. Bottom of the fourth at the plate. Max Kepler. Max Kepler. That one fouled off. You know, these Phils doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Ball one there. One ball, two strikes down. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. 3-2 now. [Applause] swing and a tapper fires over to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Now batting second base Wilson. Now it’s the second baseman. Weston Wilson flyed to right his first time. He swings and fouls one off. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside and that’s in the dirt. Next offering is in for a strike. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Hammered down the line. Could be extra bases. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in. Not gonna get him. He’s in there. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of this struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. And digging in for Philadelphia, Bryson stop flyed out his first time and takes low for ball one. Runner at second here. One gone. And another ball. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Jansen Junk up and throwing. Weathers warming up as well. Phillies. Man at second. That one not close. And that’s ball three [Applause] and ball four to a board. Bell just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. First and second, one out. Next is the speedy first baseman. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Pitch is in there and the count even at one. Wilson the lead runner out at second. Stopped at first. One gone. Come on now. And that is downstairs. Two balls in a strike on the ground to third. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Now, the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Edward Cabrera is done. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Valente Beoo gets the ball. Now, at this point of the ball game, we’re talking about middle innings. And you need a little length out of this arm coming out of the bullpen. We’ll see just how many outs he’s able to give his skipper. And now Bader up to the plate. He’s already homerred in this game. Harrison Bader. That’s outside and that’s ball one and that one fouled off. Runners are at the corners. One away. Runner on the move. The one-1 is fouled off. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. [Music] Two on, one out. That one hit to right. Senoha makes the catch. Runner tagging from third. He scores on the sack fly. It’s 5-1. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner at third. Less than two outs. Put the ball in play. And a nice job with the sack fly. And Kyle Schwarber will come up. He’s already homerred here in this one. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. And a base hit up the middle. Lead runner to second with two gone. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. First and second, two outs. Now the third baseman, Alec Bow. Ball one, no strikes. Two aboard, two outs. Lifted in the air, right field. Senoha snags it and that ends the inning. They put two on the board on two hits. Two errors, but two are left stranded. We played four. It’s the Phillies five and the Marlins one. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the fifth and now for the Marlins. Griffin Conai Sanchez back to work. Yeah, that’s fouled off. You know these Marlins finding ways to get on base, but they still need help driving them home. They only have one hit with runners in scoring position. So, a lot of squandered opportunities. It’s tough because those are moments you just can’t get back. And a quick out number one. Now batting right fielder Javier. Javier Senoha the next up for the Marlins. Come on. And delivers outside. So critical to keep an eye on the pitch count this time of the year. Guys can start to run on fumes a little bit. Mechanics can drop off and we know they need him to be fresh and ready for big innings in October. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Next offering is fouled back. The Phillies leading by four and we’re at the top of the fifth. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. Now batting shortstop Lopez back to the top of the Miami order. And up next for Miami, Otto Lopez. He’s 0 for one. Step off throw to first and he’s back safely. and a strike. Senoha leads off first with one away. Phillies. They had a strike in there. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. The 02, strike three. Got him looking on the change up. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strike out. You got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Now the number two hitter Augustine Ramirez inside and that’s ball one. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. And that one missing low. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. When the pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking, make sure that they don’t get any confidence. Fouls it back with two strikes. Phillies up the middle. Tosses to first. Third out. One left for Miami. They’re down 5-1. Back here in Philadelphia. Bottom of the inning. Now here is Brandon March. and Marsh swings and misses 0 and one. Well, these Phillies, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far, and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strikeout. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. And up to the plate is JT Riom. Sliced hard but fouled. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. That one missing inside. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Man, that was pretty gross right there. Here’s a swing and a drive left field. And he knew it. A massive home run. His 13th home run of the season. It’s 6-1. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. [Applause] That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. [Applause] Max Kepler at the plate. One for two. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Next offering is fouled back. One out, base is empty and a run in. Last half of inning number five. That’s off the inside corner. Now one and two on the ground right side to first, but it pulls him off the bag. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. Man at first with one gone. Weston Wilson will hit next. [Applause] And there’s the strike. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Man at first, one away. Billy goes down looking for the strikeout. Fast ball to letters froze him for strike three. Up next for the And now for the Phillies, Bryson stop. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that the throw to first that ends the frame. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further and this is now a 61 ball game. And we’re back. Top six. And at the plate for Miami, Jacob Marcy. Marcy 23 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick in 2022. And that drops in for a strike. Stirring in the Phillies bullpen. Tanner Banks, the left-hander up and throwing. Stum also getting ready. And that just misses. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field and the leadoff man aboard. Up next for the Marlins, third base. And next will be the cleanup hitter Connor Norby inside. just missed. Two balls, no strikes to count. Nobody out. Runner at first. right down to shoot and it’s two and one. Now in today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Now, let’s see if they can string something together, make it a little more interesting. And the Phillies manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make a move. Christopher Sanchez out of the game. Pretty good effort and he exits with a lead. We’ll tell you about the new pitcher when we get back. They turn things over to the southpaw, Ranger Suarez. This southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. Ariberto Hernandez the next up for the Marlins that misses off the outside edge. outside and the count is 2 and 0. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0. That’s a little bit low. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. First and second here, no outs. And they’re all loaded up. Now batting second. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. Has grounded out a couple of times. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through into big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Boom. There’s one, and a run scores on the double play. It’s always great when you can add a run, but in this situation with the bases loaded, double plays kind of a rally killer. And now the first baseman, Eric Wagaman, bowl for two in this one. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. When you played, did you play with guys that you thought were clutch and sort of what were the attributes you said that’s what he possesses that allows him to come through? Well, we always used to joke, you know, guys want to eat steak. Ah, that’s strike three and the third out. So, we take a break. A run on two hits and they leave one. Nine one and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Philly six and the Marlins two. Bottom of the sixth inning. So digging in now for Philadelphia number four and first offering is fouled off. Fouled off left side. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. On the ground to the left and it goes just fouled. Yeah. And I figured you would get Katay into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Now batting. So here’s Bader now. His two-run homer back in the third was an important swing of the bat in this one. Yeah, there’s no doubt he helped set the tone fairly early and certainly part of the reason why they’ve got the lead right now. That’s in there. Going one. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the sixth. up the middle tosses to first and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the Phillies, right fielder Kyle Schwarber. Two down, base is empty. Here comes Schwarz to the plate. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. That’s in there. Strike one. That one missed on the ground and that’s just foul. Swings and miss has struck him out. Down quickly go to Phillies. They lead it six-2. Now pitching Tanner Banks comes on now. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. And now here’s the Marlins DH Griffin Conter Griffin Con. just missed. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. There was nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. And now Javier Senoha just off the inside edge. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Hit on the ground might be two. Whips it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Now batting short stop Lopez. So digging in Otto Lopez went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Out of line out towards center. Bader makes the grab. Two down. Here’s the catcher to hit. Augustine Ramirez. And a foul ball. Come on, Philly. That one a little bit high. One ball, one strike. Conine at second with two down. Squirts away a little bit. Conine up to third on the wild pitch. Have to be really sure you can make it safely to third when you’re in scoring position and two outs. Got to get that run across. Very important. Does a nice job of reading it. Gets to third base now just 90 ft away. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Three and one now. And that’s going to get into the corner and it stays fair. In comes the runner from third. It’s six to three. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily, man. and he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying his mechanics. So runner at second, two down. And now for the Marlins, Jacob Marcy. First pitch misses. [Music] Two outs and a sweeper misses for a ball. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. And another ball. not really attacking on the mound in this at bat. All breaking balls. So, that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here. Philadelphia. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Ground ball to Bow Fires across the diamond. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Marlins get a run on the RBI double. It’s now 63. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Calvin Foch. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. 345 do up for the home team. Alec Bow now at the plate. Here’s a rocket out to left. Hernandez makes the grab. One away. Now batting. Brandon March stands in for the Phillies. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. That clips a corner. Get your head out. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Hernandez brings it in and there’s two away. Now batting catcher JT JT Real Mutil steps in. Swanging a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Makes the play and it’s out number three. So they go quietly there. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Philly six and the Marlins three. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. David Robertson gets an opportunity to square off against his former team. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. Leading off, Connor Norby. And that one sliced foul. Let’s go, Phillies. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. Hey, if you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. To third and that chance handled. Throws across the diamond. First out in the top of the eighth. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw, Ariberto Hernandez, the next up for the Marlins, a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Swinging a foul straight back. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And that misses. One and one. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. And now it’s one and two. This one in the air right field. Let’s go, baby. Come on. Schwarber settles under it and makes the catch. That’s out number two. Up next for the Marlins. Two outs. Base is empty. Savior Edwards the next up for the Marlins. Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing and one and there’s a ball. Just missed. You got two balls, one strike now. Swing and a miss. struck him out and it’s a three up, three down inning and the Marlins down quietly and can’t cut into that 6-3 deficit. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Weathers. He’s been so good against lefties. Now the batter now, Max Kepler. Well, on paper, it’s favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he’s set to face batting from the left side. Same side he throws from and first off is fouled off. Weathers fires off the mark there and that is ball one. [Music] This one ripped but fouled to the right. Let’s go Phillies and that skips in the dirt. Got him swinging. Gasted right by him. Weston Wilson stands in for the Phillies. One for three and that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jansen Junk appears to be getting loose. Peterson also throwing. swings through that. I got one ball, one strike. One down, base is empty. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Good job to fight that one off. Let’s go. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Now batting two down, base is empty and digging in for Philadelphia. Bryson stop and first offering is fouled off. Two down. Doon slashes this one and it could be trouble around first and hustling for second. He’s there. It’s a two out double all over that one right there. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. [Applause] So, runner at second, two down. And here’s the first baseman. That one catches the zone. Strike one. Runner at second. Two down here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Let’s go Phillies. One and one. There’s a swing and a drive. And this one looks like trouble. The run comes in from second and they’re up by four. Picks himself up an RBI. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing, nice balance and weight transfer and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. man in scoring position with two away. Harrison Bader the next to hit and first offering is fouled off. [Music] that clips the inside corner for a strike. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. man on second. Two down. Fights it off. You’ll see another the O2. That one lifted to left. Hernandez. He’s got it. And that’s the inning. Phillies with the runscoring double. Last chance coming up here for the Marlins. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Matt Strong. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning, so he’ll be tough to get to. And at the plate for Miami, Eric Wagaman 0 for three in this one. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Some bullpen action for Philadelphia. Lou Trevino, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Mesa, the lefty, warming up as well. swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting the designated hitter. Now here’s the Marlins DH Griffin Con and that’s a little bit high. One and0 is a pretty cool hobby. collects baseball cards of players who hit home runs off of them. I love the reason he does it. He tells people, “If you hit a home run against me, you’re good enough to collect.” That one finds the zone. And now it’s even one and one to third. Might be two to second for one and it’s over his head. And now runners at the corners nobody out. Now batting right fielder Javier Samohha. So runners at the corners. Nobody out. Javier Senoha getting ready to hit. Come on, let’s get the ground. Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. Counts. One and0. There’s the swing and a miss. And a foul ball. [Applause] Swung on. Belted. That’s back there. And it’s out of here. And they throw three on the board. It’s 76. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Matt Stum gives way and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So they turn to their closer, Yoan Duran. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So, back to the top of the order. Otto Lopez digs in now. The shorts stop takes the ball. [Applause] And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Swing and a miss. Now he’s in a one-two hole. One-run game here in the top of the ninth [Applause] to the right side. Dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and they don’t get an out on the play. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Augustine Ramirez now at the plate. Pitch in the dirt. Ball one. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Next offering is downstairs. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all and fouled off with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Next pitch is outside. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Jacob Marcy in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Foul ball and it remains a full count. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Due next. He fouls it off. Will do it again. Sit him down. Finish him. Got him. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. And now the center fielder, Jacob Marcy. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. That one finds the zone and it’s one and one and that one fouled off. A oneun lead here in the top of the ninth. Swing and a miss. That’s a strike out and they’re down to their last out. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. Marlins down to their final out. Connor Norby the next up for the Marlins. [Music] Come on, Billy. In the dirt, goes to second. Save and he’s into scoring position with two away on a wild pitch. as a closer. He’s out there in that role for a reason, but even they lose the handle on one here and there, especially with all the nasty stuff coming out of bullpens these days. He’s making it a little interesting here. So, the tying run at second swing and a miss and 102 on the radar gun. [Applause] Duran is just one strike away. Swing and a miss and that’s the ball game. Well, this turned out to be an exciting, very well played game. Always feels great when you can take the lead in the eighth at home. Come out in the ninth, the crowd will be behind that pitcher as he tries to get those final three outs. Everybody goes home happy with a win like this. One-run game here today. Your final score 7 to6. The Phillies hang on to win it. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
