BAN THE WAVE! | Post-Game Fan Reaction: Oilers vs Kraken | Pre-Season
You know, I always say it’s just preeason and I have stated numerous times that if the Oilers whenever they lose in preseason, the games don’t matter. I still stand by that, right? We still stand by that. It’s just preseason. Don’t worry about it. We’re not worried about a 4-1 loss to the Seattle Kraken. We’re not worried about the big guns not looking so good trying to pass the puck in the net. We’re not worried about Steuart Skinner looking a little bit shaky in his crease tonight. What I am worried about though are the fans. Oil country, you gota we got to calm down. Okay, we can’t be doing the wave. We can’t be doing the wave in preseason. Also, is something haunted? What is happening? Why Why is there a light going off? Did you all see that? Now, in the last postgame fan reaction I did, someone said that the code hanger behind me was swinging back and forth. And now we’re starting to see some uh power flickers going on here. Not sure what that’s all about. Maybe uh maybe my energy is just causing electrical activity in the room to be a little bit off. Uh so, the Oilers, they did lose 4-1. Welcome to the postgame fan reaction. Of course, this is preseason. We’re going to try not to overreact, but the fans doing the wave tonight. Edmonton had just scored to make it a 2-1 game. Andrew Mapani scored his first goal in an Oiler uniform. Of course, it doesn’t technically count, but I did like Mount Japan’s game. I thought he had a pretty effective game overall. He was pretty quiet in that first probably, I’d say, first period, he seemed quiet, but as the game went on, I did like a lot more what I was seeing from him. Uh, so the Oilers, they make it a 2-1 game about halfway through the third. Lots of time to tie this thing up. And not long after Majapani makes it one goal game, the fans start doing the wave, folks. And listen, this is a bit on the channel, by the way. If you’re new to the channel and you’re about to get really mad at me for complaining about the wave. Trust me, we’re just I’m just having fun. I just have to point that out. If you’re new to the channel, by the way, hit the like button. Uh my brain’s super scattered tonight. I’m sorry. I just finished the live stream. If you tuned in live stream, thank you so much. If you did not tune in live stream, don’t worry. I will be doing another one for the game on Friday against Winnipeg. But the fans doing the wave down by a goal halfway through the third period and then not long after that Seattle while they make it 3-1 on a goal that I think Steuart Skinner wants back. He’s parked on his goal line. Puck just beats him under the arm. It just squeaks through him. I don’t know. There’s only one goal I don’t blame Stu on and that was the first one. It was on the penalty kill. We’ll go over it in the edge visualizer once I get that all set up. We’re also going to take a look at some of the advanced stats as well because now that the season is starting to get going, it is just preseason. Uh some of the advanced stats are being tracked. I don’t know how accurate they are though, just because it is preseason. So, take the advanced stats with a grain of salt, but we’re going to take a look at the uh hockey stat cards here first. And I did mention the top guns for Edmonton not being their best players. And well, the hockey stat card for their top players shows that Trent Frederick had an abysmal game, was even on the ice for any kind of expected goal for the fact that Frederick was given an opportunity to play next to McDavid and Dry Settle tonight and did absolutely nothing with that puck at all. Frederick was invisible. I’m just going to put it out there. Trent Frederick, he was invisible with the net empty. He was invisible on the power play. He was invisible at five on five. Listen, I know the team has invested a lot of money into him a lot of years. Uh for Trent Frederick, he’s coming off that high ankle sprain. It’s just preseason, so we can’t get too intense about this. Uh, but that’s an opportunity and I and it could be a potential opportunity wasted for Trent Frederick. One game sample size. We won’t worry about it. We’ll see if he gets another opportunity with the big guns, but it’s not like McDavid and Dryside will played any better. Look at the negative here. My goodness, they had no real offensive impact for their team. And of course, Andrew Majapani, who I said had a good game. Looks like according to the hockey stack card, he did have a good game. Tomask also looked very effective. Tomask is going to make it very difficult for the team to cut him moving forward. He could carve himself a spot in the top nine for Edmonton. I like a lot about his game. He keeps pucks alive, gets in on the forche. So, we’ll have to see how Tomasg plays moving forward. Hopefully, as of the recording of this video, hopefully by the time you watch it, he hasn’t been cut yet. I hope they keep him around. Uh Yarventi, I didn’t think had a great game, but according to the hockey stat card, uh he he had an okay game. So, Clattenberg, just not a lot of ice time. pretty low event for a lot of players. Matias Yanmark, I’m gonna I’m gonna tell you right now with Matias Yanmark, that guy was everywhere tonight for the good and bad reasons. Bro, so last year there was a inside joke uh among us here in oil country on the Austin Hockey YouTube channel where if Jeff, not Jeff Skinner, Connor Brown, if Connor Brown scored a hat-tick, I was going to buy a Connor Brown jersey. This year, that is now going to be Matias Yanmark’s job. If Matias Yanmark scores a hat-tick in a game, I will get a Matias Yanmark jersey. That is what I am committing to on the channel. This is a bit that I’m committing to and if it happens, I’ll actually, you know, fully commit and buy the jersey. But TS Yanmark tonight took a pen leave that led to the first Seattle cracking goal. And then later in the first period, TS Yandmark gets a breakaway, partial breakaway. It wasn’t like a full-on breakaway. And he does the old school clapper from the left circle. And Joey Dord obviously he’s going to save that. You should be stopping those 99 times out of 100. So I just thought it was hilarious. Matias Sanmark of course also gets penalty kill time as well. Now the Oilers, they had good opportunities uh on the penalty kill. Leon Didle and Conor McDavid, they were out there on the kill for a couple of shifts. They had a couple twoon- ones tonight and I don’t think they even got a shot on net and even a five on five. The Emmonton Withers had I think several oddman breaks where they didn’t get a single shot on net. There was one in the third period where you had a threeon-one with Lazar and Samanssky and Laz. I don’t know what happened, but the team didn’t get a shot on net. I think Yanmar tried to play it back to Lazar and then it just went off of a Seattle Kraken stick and it goes into the corner. Just wasted opportunities. Obviously, you’re going to hope they bear down on these chances when the regular season hits that. But why would why would fans be concerned, by the way, because there’s probably some concern here in oil country. We we have seen that before where sometimes it doesn’t look good in preseason and then that also translates to the regular season for the first few weeks. uh happened last year where we all thought that ah you know they’re just saving their energy for the regular season and then the regular season started and it was like oh oh maybe they’re not saving their energy maybe they’re just bad right now. I really hope that’s not the case here. I don’t want to say that that’s the case because again one game sample size. I’d like to hope that tonight especially for the big guns it’s just trying to get a feel for the puck, get a feel for the game, feel for the speed of it and hopefully they just bear down on a few more chances. Conor McDavid later in the third period he had a partial breakaway. He tried to go backhand short side. He didn’t even hit the net. It went like 3 ft wide of the net off of the end of McDavid’s stick. Not very McDavidlike, right? There’s a lot of plays tonight where it just wasn’t really McDavidlike. You’re not used to seeing those types of plays. Try Cidle had a couple chances on the power play with those one-times, but Dord and Koko were able to uh come up big with the stops. Let’s get into the edge visualizer for the goals here. Now, you’re not going to want to watch the uh Seattle Kraken goals, but I do have to give Stu some defense here on this first one. This was on the power play for Seattle. The Oilers just make a change. Now, this one, this one’s not on Stew, right? You have Regula who loses Fergus by the way. Joerger Furkus. What a name. Look at this guy. What an absolute be this guy is. Can you imagine being Joerger Fergus and scoring on Steuart Skinner in a preseason game? That guy’s probably feeling pretty darn good. on the power play for the Kraken. Now, the initial shot was blocked by Milman. And then the second shot attempt comes in. And where is Regula going here? Regula and Hamlin. And Milman, well, uh-oh. Two Seattle Kraken behind three Oilers defenders. That’s not a recipe for success. Now, Steuart Skinner made the initial save, but Fergus on this rebound here. There’s literally nothing Stuart Skinner could do. Literally nothing. I don’t know what you want Steuart Skinner to do. Some people say, “Oh, well, we want the save.” Well, obviously you want a save. But that one’s not on Steu, folks. Uh Fergus, he puts that into the wide open net. This was the goal that I didn’t like that Stu gave up. The Oilers were hemmed in. It was their top line. Uh Bousard just throws the puck to literally no man’s land. Puck kept alive by the Kraken and then it’s played behind Bousard. It comes to Mo Morrison and then Steuart Skinner for some reason when he goes for the poke check, he opens his legs as wide as humanly possible. Like literally as wide as you can. There’s no way Morrison wasn’t going to put that puck in. Steuart Skinner, if you’re going for the poke check, just keep those legs closed. In fact, maybe just keep your body big. Like, go, you can go to the butterfly and then just hold it because Morrison would have had nowhere to shoot. He would have had to beat you above the shoulder. Point blank. He’s not going to do it. Stu, you’re a big boy. Go down on those knees. Keep those legs closed. Did not like that goal against. Now, M Japan’s goal. Yarventi got an assist on it and Bousard, but it was mostly Bousard here. He deflects it in behind the Seattle defense. Now, instead of taking this to the net, which I thought he would, he does a good job. He wraps it around and then he centers it to Mapani. Koko makes the initial save. You go, Glen Koko. Uh, he makes the initial save on Mapapani, but Mapani, he eventually taps that rebound in. We’ll watch it one more time since I was kind of talking over it. Nice job by Buchard. He uses his speed and his offensive instincts to get around behind the defense. Passes in front of Mapani. Nice job by Mapani. You got you got to crash the blue paint. And that’s something that I want to see more of from guys like Trent Frederick, right? Like if if you want a Zack Heyman replacement for his goals because we know Heyman’s not going to play for about the first month or so of the season, at least until November, right? We don’t know how long Heyman’s really going to be out, but he’s not playing until at least November. Uh and then how long will it take him to get up to speed once he is in the lineup? For guys like Mapani, for guys like Trent Frederick, like you you got to go to the blue paint, right? You got to get to the dirty areas if you’re going to score those types of goals. Nice job by Mapani. Good finish there and then the fans did the wave and then 2 minutes after the wave started, Ben Meyers, he scores for the Kraken. The big guns out for the Oilers once again. Puck down in the corner. You have McDavid just kind of well, I mean, he was kind of watching his man. You have Boo. Like the Oilers positionally here are fine, but then McDavid decides he also wants to come in down low when you already have two Oilers here. Drives side along the half wall. This is just a breakdown where the puck I mean Schwarz Schwarz just wins the board battle and he gets it out in front to Ben Meyers and Meyers shoots it and it just squeaks through the arm of Steuart Skinner. That’s one where I think you want to save. Stu was literally on his goal line. He looked like he was in his own net actually. Like look at this circle here. Look how far it is in the uh net area. And obviously that’s a high danger chance, but you know, again, the other team when the Oilers get high danger chances, they get the saves for Steuart Skinner. It’s just preseason. Not going to pick on them too bad. Uh would have really liked one there. And then Yanny Nyman. What the heck is that guy? Yanny Nyman. Reminds me of Yanny Ninma for some reason. Uh just with the name, but that’s pretty much it. Oh, looks like Kitty’s gone now. He’s had enough of my my uh my ridiculous energy tonight. The Oilers lose 4-1 to Seattle, but again, we’re not going to worry about it too much. I imagine the team is going to start trimming the roster down a little bit. Once they do, I will be talking about it uh tomorrow. There will be a day after discussion. Hopefully, there’s some cuts to talk about and there’s a few players specifically in preseason so far that I do want to give their flowers. I do want to talk about uh in a positive light because we’re halfway through preseason now. There’s four preseason games left, I believe. Maybe three. Four or three. I don’t know. Season starts in less than two weeks. October 8th, maybe that is two weeks. I don’t know. What is math? Who am I? Where are we? What is the world right now? Listen, I’ve been awake too long. I got to go get some sleep. I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week. Um, I will see you tomorrow for the day after discussion podcast episode of course and then Friday morning pregame report for the Oilers and Jets as they meet once again. Second time in preseason. So, we’ll see you soon, Oil Country. Tell us that you love him. And as always, fight like a kid, fight like Ben. Let’s go Oilers. We’ll see you soon. Also, keep the conversation going in the comments section. All right, let me know what you thought about the game tonight. All right, see you later. Bye-bye now. See you later. Byebye. Bye.
The Edmonton Oilers had a veteran-heavy lineup tonight against the Seattle Kraken at home, but Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and co. came up short in a 4-1 loss at Roger’s Place. Stuart Skinner’s first start of the pre-season left a lot to be desired, and also BAN THE WAVE! Let’s go oilers go Austin Stanley cup champs 2026
0:40 it was me also it's josh brown doing it
Oilers sucked bad. Fat or thin, Skinner is ass!
MANGIAPANE WAS SKATING GOOD TONIGHT LETS GO OILERS I ALSO THOUGHT EVAN BOUCHARD IS LOOKING BETTER THIS YEAR BUT IT IS PRE SEASON NOT REGULAR SEASON YET
They should have had Jonsson come in within he Third Period. I genuinely hate how he’s being ignored.
Line combos, chemistry options, collective on & off ice decisons w/ players to get use to each other w/ the new team players towards working together again.
The Oil will flow as the tap will not run dry.
It's just the intro after the table of contents, for these paragraphs to become a complete story.
Oilers Al🎯t👊👏👍
*Edit: Just realized the request for 3 stars but it's all good either way 🙂
Trade 5 1sts for Ilya Sorokin
It's an exhibition game losing the dust from the summer and gelling players together …
Is we lose it don't matter IF WE WIN , IT MATTERS ,right 😁
Good thing he’s feeling better than ever!!
Just joking (kind of) I’m not watching preseason so I’ll wait until it starts up again
It's content I guess, but pre-season means literally nothing.
Bloody hell, seasons over! Lmfao!
I was at the game but I literally am not worried one tiny little bit certain guys looked good which I'm glad to see!
Let the fans do what they want! They pay a Kings ransom to watch their team lose
I'd Say Go After Connor Ingram cause Skinner is Gonna Flop so Badly This Season it's gonna ruin McDavid's Career if Bowman doesn't make any Goalie Moves in two weeks cause if he does nothing but let Skinner be the Starter yeah not trusting him 100%
Austin your room is haunted lol
Im pressing the Panick button! Oh my gosh!… 4-1 loss 😭😮💨 damnnnnnn
Stu in mid season form already!
You obviously have an Oiltergeist.
NHL's most protected franchise deadmonton coilers with 4 Number 1 draft picks looking for new excuses even while they had full team out with mcdavid , draisatl , ekholm .. lmfao coilers with new excuses
Only Andrew show up today
Can't finish. Skinner with a couple of week goals. What's new?
Last year it was wild watching players who are clearly fatigue/disinterested who needed to be benched/scratched. Hope we can see that, wish we would use our AHL pipeline more. We've been letting a few hungry 24/25/26 year olds waste away.
Even tho preseason doesn’t matter at all. When have the oilers not started out slow? The same year they were a goal away from winning the cup they fired woody 12 games into the season. Last year wasn’t a good start either
Jagger Firkus is from Irma, Alberta, my hometown. Hometown proud!
Let’s stick with the rookies. And ban the wave.
7:50 Thank you for actually calling out THE BOUCHARD F UP CAUSING THE GOAL AGAINST .
After a 10.85 million pay increase , bouchard still let opposing players in behind him in front of Stu, like a schmuck and back to lackadaisical wandering .
Did i call it or did i get it 100%.
unearned raises never inspire effort , only arrogant complacency for next few years . and because every one kissed evan's a$s ignored his costly screwing around . it's only going to get worse .
Bouch was just on the ice for 3 goals against so that's not bad. I would like Stu to get his save% above the .833, but he is not at his peak yet. Frederics is clearly a very bad signing as there has been no evidence of capability – & Bowman is just committed to overpaying $32mil to him so that is a very odd one. Bouch got an assist & Oilers paying him $10m for that – concerning that mcD is -3 after going minus all series vs FLA, but he should improve… Great that the D from Bako held the fort without any goals… but this seems to highlight the issues w D (Nurse, Bou, Ekh >$25m
Sure preseason doesn’t matter but man why are we losing to a team like kraken? They are predicted to be the worst team in the pacific west.
Well just a preseason game but pretty typical of the team. Just watched the highlights and it looked like it should be the oilers game. But Bouchard as usual playing in dreamland and skinner at his usual ineptness in goal said it all
