🔴LIVE 🔴 Los Angeles Dodgers vs Arizona Diamondbacks /September 25 /MLB THE SHOW 25

picks an NL West matchup on the show. It’s the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. And now, first pitch coming at you right after the break. Arizona Time. So, just about set now. And today’s starting pitcher, Brandon F. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Alex Call, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. in for a strike. Went with the sweeper and that ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. Here’s Mookie Betts. FA measures 6’4 in 220 lb and he was a fifthround pick in 2020. Now this is in the air down the line. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Drips one to right and it stays fair. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in and he’s there with a double. He was all over that one. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. Here is Freddy Freeman. Another solid power season. Check swing called strike. Man at second. Swinging a foul straight back. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Handles. throws to first and Freeman is retired. Time to check out the Dodgers lineup. And we check out the guy in the seventh spot, Tommy Edmond. Well, he’s an important part of this lineup for sure. I mean, there’s no doubt about it, Boo. It’s somebody that they try to feed off of. He does a lot of things, you know, very well up there at the plate. He’s got a presence about him and, you know, he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat. Maxy at the dish. in there at the knees for a strike. Misses off the inside. One and one. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one. On the ground right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One left for LA. And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat. No score. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the mound in this one, Yoshobu Yamamoto. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. Peraldo Pomo leading things off and takes a strike. line drive. Fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s got a leadoff double. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. Swinging a foul out of play. kicks and fires and it’s one and one. Peromo at second with nobody out. Ripped right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. His 27th home run of the season. The Diamondbacks score first. It’s two nothing. Boog. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. Took a direct path to the ball. Excellent extension and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. This is Corbin Carroll. Strike on the inside corner. 0 and one. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run. But nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. I’m so glad Yamamoto made the move to Major League Baseball. He’s one of the most decorated pitchers to come out of Japan and finished his Nepon professional baseball career in style. Facing elimination and pitching in game six of the Japan series, Yamamoto pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts and broke the series strikeout record held by U Darvish. What a way to go out. First strike out for him in this one. And that splitter is maybe the go-to pitch when he’s looking for a swing and miss like that. He throws it quite a bit and that’s a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter. Gabrielle Moreno stands in now for the Diamondbacks and the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. One out. Base is empty. That’s in for a strike at 95. And it’s one and one. And that’s in the dirt. late on that fast ball. Wow. Good luck catching up to that one. Good job to fight that one off. Still only one out here in the inning. Just off the outside part of the plate. really good take especially with two strikes. Fouled off again and it remains three and two and he’ll do it again. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, even though he strikes out, he saw a lot of pitches and he battled. Plus, he gave the guys behind him an opportunity to see more from the pitcher. Not the result he wanted, but that’s still a good at bat. Now at the plate, Bla1 Alexander. Two down. Doan up the middle. Bets. The throw to first. That’s the third out. Inning over. Dbacks at a pair on the homer. And it’s two zip. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Top of the second and now Toss Oscar Hernandez. Oscar Hernandez thought back to work. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. Missed with a change up. Now 2 and 0. James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent as you mentioned and maybe a little generous on the edges. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. McCarthy makes the grab on the run. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Michael Conforto, the next to hit, takes ball one. and foul ball. One down, base is empty. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Man at first with one gone. Tommy Edmond at the plate. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. Now let’s 01 now. That one in there across the letters. Just missed. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Next pitch, not close. Up high. Man at first. One away. Finish him. Got him swinging. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Bogey just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. And now the center fielder Andy Pahes. Just missed. Confor leads off first with two down to the inning. That one off the mark and the count is 2 and 0. swing and a base hit. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. And here’s the catcher, Ben Wertvet. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. First and second, two down here in the top of the second. This to third. tosses across the first and that is the inning. Two left on now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Diamondbacks two and the Dodgers nothing. Back here in the desert ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now it’s going to be Ilamaro Vargas Vargas. line drives to short and caught. Nice swing and good solid contact. That ball was smoke, but needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. Maybe a little more backspin. Alec Thomas now Boo, here’s a note on Yamamoto. He won three straight Sawamura awards, the Japanese equivalent of the Sai Young award, and the last three Pacific League most valuable player awards, which was the first MVP three repeat since Ichiro Suzuki. got him looking and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count. Just a pour at bat. Two outs, space is empty. And now the veteran catcher, James McCann. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two out. Space is empty. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. Outside low now. One and two. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. Smoked on the ground to second. Throws to first and Arizona is set down. One, two, three. Diamondbacks down quickly. They’re up two nothing. Back here at Chase Field now. Here is Alex Call. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. One away. Mookie Betts will make his way to the plate. Doubled his first time up. D. There’s a strike to Mooki. That’s in there. 0 and two. That to right Carol. He’s there. He’s got it. Two away now. Freddy Freeman will come up to hit. Grounded out his first time. That clips a corner right through there for a strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Just off the inside corner and the count is one and two out to center. Thomas and puts the squeeze on that one. And that’ll do it. Three up, three down that time. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Diamondbacks two and the Dodgers nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is Jake McCarthy. Jake McCarthy. There’s a strike. Pretty rare location right there. Right down the middle. This guy paints the edges. I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter. Swing and a miss. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. Breaking ball inside. Yeah, the count one and two. outside. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Here’s Catel Marte. He’s already homered in this game all around. And I think if you asked anyone in this organization who’s the best hitter in the lineup, they would say him. Just missed. swing and a ball lifted left field. He’s got it and there’s two away. Now batting right Carol. Now up next for Arizona, Corbin Carroll struck out swinging his first time. Ball one, no strikes. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. The 1-1 foul ball, struck him out swinging, and that puts him just 1k away from 200 on the year. One left for the Diamondbacks as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. And we’re back as we go to the top of the fourth. Here comes that funky Muny to the plate. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. John Curtis getting loose out there. Beaks also throwing. That’s inside and it’s two and 0. He’s been pitching well, but we’ll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order. We’ll know if he’s got really good stuff in this one or not. Alexander sizing this one up. Makes the grab. One down. Now batting rightielder. Here’s Tayscar Hernandez. fly to left his first time. So, the Dodgers are going to have to try and come from behind and try and get that offense going. Pitch misses. Ball one. Hernandez in his eighth season, 32 years old, and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Just missed. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the hard of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. There’s the strike right side and that’s a fair ball around first heading for two into second and he’s got a double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. One out, runner at second. Michael Conforto now at the plate. One for one with a single so far. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’s safe and they trail by one. comes through with the RBI. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Now, the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Brandon F departs. Not his best performance, but he leaves with the lead and we’ll get a new arm into the game after this. Now, John Curtis gets the ball. Now, he doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. One down, runner at first. Tommy Edmund steps to the plate for the Dodgers. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time and the first pitch. Misses for ball one. Come on. Right through there for a strike with the tying run on at first. Top half of inning number four. And a count one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Little bit low and the count’s even at two. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. 2-2 now. and just misses with that one on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boob. Foul ball and it remains a full count. battling here as he fouls it away. Eighth pitch of the at coming up and ball four two aboard. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. First and second, one out. Here’s the center fielder, Andy Pahes, and he’s already singled in this game. There’s a strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you’ve got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Swing and a highfly ball. That one out towards left center field. Way back there. squeezes it. Runner tags it second and he moves up a base. So two away with runners at the corners. Excellent play out there and he does it in a huge spot. That wall, it can very easily jar the ball loose when you bang into it. So that could have been a really different outcome. Now the catcher up to hit Ben Wet 0 for one so far. clips the outside corner. Strike one. Ball one there. Two on, two outs. swings and misses and it’s one and two. And a good eye there. That’s a really good take. Good eye in that spot. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Alex Call in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. This one popped up right side Marte and that’s the third out but the RBI single pushes across a run and it’s now a two-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. Back here in the desert ready to go. Bottom four. And now the DH. Gabrielle Moreno. Moreno. And first offering is fouled off. And there’s the strike up the middle and he knocks it down. The throw is still in time and they get it out on the play. Now batting third base. Now the third baseman, Bla1 Alexander grounded out to short in his first trip. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Let’s go back. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. One down, base is empty. And that skips in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here 22. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. cut on and lifted in the air. Hernandez ranging after it and there’s two down. Now batting first. Two down. Base is empty. Ilaro Vargas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s 0 for one. That’s a little bit low. swing and a miss and it’s a ball and a strike. I think he was sitting off speed there. The 1-1 is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one got a piece of him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Next to hit for Arizona, Alec Thomas caught looking his first time up. That’s in there. Go and one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Alex Via looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. Yates the right-hander also getting loose. Vargas off of first with two away. Next pitch is outside. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a rollover something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Throw over to first. Swing and a miss. And it’s one and two on the ground right side. It’s in and out of his glove, but they get the out at first. And that’ll do it for the inning. One left for Arizona, but they still lead it two to one. We’re back. And there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Jaylen Beaks. He’s pitching on two days rest. Now it’s the DH Alex call for two in this one. First offering and it just misses a little out front there as he swings through it. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Oh, look at the stop and they get the out. Big play there to get the leadoff man. Now it’s Mookie Betts one for two right through there for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Hard hit left side. throws to first in time and the first two set down in the top of the fifth. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Here’s Freddy Freeman. Now, a little bit high maybe. And it’s one and0. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. That misses two and0. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there’s some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will on the ground right side. tosses to first and the Dodgers are set down in order. Nothing doing it for the Dodgers here and our score remains 2-1. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Kirby Yates. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Here is James McCann grounded out his first time. Check swing called stride. fouls it back with two strikes. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Just beautiful placement of the splitter right there. Exactly where you want it with two strikes to get that swing and miss. And he’s worked very hard to be able to command that pitch. It’s a tough pitch to get a grip on, but he’s one of the best at throwing it where he wants to. McCarthy in the box for the second time. One ball, no strikes. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball two. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. One down. Base is empty. That one misses. Three and 0. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. That’s in for a strike. Clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle. And there’s the strike. Foul tip into the mix. Struck him out. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two- strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Peraldo Peromo. First pitch just misses. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Two outs. And he grounds one back up the middle. Throw on to Freeman. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing doing for Arizona. They lead it 2-1. back now. And on the mound, the closer number 27. He’s been so good against lefties. Here’s Muny to hit. Rogers. A lot of times you’re looking for a guy to get that tying run on base, but because of the power, you want him to tie up the game with one swing here. Swings and pulls a foul to the right side. Looking to get the tying run on base. Fought off foul. Swinging a ground ball in plenty of time to first and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Good armside run and sink on that pitch right there. Got inside on him and got him to bounce into that out. And now Tioscar Hernandez. This one chopped on the ground but foul now. One and one. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. That misses now. Two balls in a strike. Just missed. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Fouls one away. And now three and two. And the tying run is on base. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Michael Conford will climb in. Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. And fouled off. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Over to first and save. Hernandez the base runner at first with one out. Next offering is in for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here on the ground right side over to Pertomo. That’s one. The double play ends it right here. Way to make a pitch right there. Get that ball on the ground. Defense picking them up. Huge double play to end this ball game. And your final score here today, 2-1. They hang on to win it by a run for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
