Klayton Adams: Find Our Way | Dallas Cowboys 2025

Calvin Watkins, Dallas Morning News. Uh, with two weeks into the season, just how good is your quarterback playing right now? Yeah, he’s he’s playing at a really high level. Yeah, he seemed to really hit the ground running and that’s always you guys had asked me a couple weeks ago about guys not playing in the preseason and my experience with that and I said, I don’t know the answer. um because I’ve seen just about every outcome there is and this is another one in my experience where you know in the future I’ll look back and go well that guy made sure that he was ready to go. So um yeah he’s playing at an extremely high level and uh confidence timing um we’re fired up about what he’s doing. uh Piggins basically just got here, you know, in training camp. H how fast they’ve kind of developed a chemistry that kind of surprised you a little bit because he was he hasn’t been here for longer than a year in a sense. Um I wouldn’t necessarily say that I was surprised by it. Uh, I think we’ve still got a long way to go, you know, in a whole bunch of different phases, but you know, what you do with guys that are new is you you try to take small bites and put them in situations where they’re comfortable and the quarterback can uh can trust what their reaction is going to be. Like Todd Archer of ESPN uh years ago, Bill Parcell said, “The best red zone teams run it into the into the end zone.” you guys have three or four red zone touchdowns. Do you agree with that premise? Is that is that something you would agree with? Like the best red zone teams are the ones that run it in? Yeah, I mean I I think it’s certainly a true sentiment. Um that doesn’t mean that you’re not going to be in situations where you have to throw it. Some of it has to do with the DNA of the defense that you’re playing against. Um there are teams that are going to force you to throw it. Um there are teams that that you know like that’s going to be the only option based on what they do. So, I think that maybe the best way to say it is that the best red zone offenses have the ability to run it when they need to. John with the Athletic, I think on the outside, a lot of people would think that your run game has exceeded expectations, especially coming off of uh the run game that the Cowboys had last year. How how would you assess it? How do you feel about the run game through two games? I think it’s a big- time work in progress. Um, I do think that we are uh finding things here or there that we like. Um, and I think the Shotti’s done a good job of sticking with it. You know, that’s one thing that I think is really important to a run game is a play caller that’s dedicated to it and has some patience. And that was the situation that we were in last week was they were pretty hellbent on stopping the run early and he just kept calling calling the stuff and eventually we found a way to break through. Um, every game’s going to be a little bit different that way. But, uh, just in general, you know, I I know that when we look back in 11 or 12 weeks, uh, I’m going to be saying, man, we’re we’re in such a better spot. Um, because the guys are doing everything we’re asking them to do. We just we got to find our way to, uh, to be as explosive and efficient as we want to be. And what do you like about uh, Brock Hoffman obviously stepping in at at center? Yeah, I mean he’s a he’s a pretty comforting guy to have on the roster because uh you you go right out to practice and he’s commanding and leading and knows exactly what to do and he’s really a pros pro and uh you know like I said that makes you feel good as a coach and probably I’m sure the quarterback feels the same way that the guy who’s stepping in is uh is a vet and knows what to do and knows the thing inside out and and like I said definitely commands the the group. Joe White Dallas Morning News. Brevin Van Ford had a couple key blocks and a couple pancakes there. I guess in terms of you being an O line guy, too. One, what do you think about when you see him kind of finishing blocks like that and how much confidence you guys have in him as a blocker? Yeah, I I think a ton. Um I think that room has done a really nice job in general. But yeah, I really like that dude. He plays uh plays with an edge. Um plays the right way. He’s smart. Uh big, strong. He’s he’s done a really good job and uh he’s definitely when you look at situational football and trying to put guys at the you know the pieces in the right spots for a red zone run or a short yardage run or you get into the four-minute plan he’s a fun a fun piece to kind of uh move around and say you know this guy’s going to be really good making this block against you know that piece and Javvante Williams had a couple runs where seemingly went into a pile kept his feet moving and then kind of emerged and later on and kind of got downfield when a running is able to do that and kind of proves that to you. Is what’s the coaching point to the rest of the linemen and receivers is like, hey, you guys got to stick with your blocks because you never know when Javvante might pop it. Yeah, I mean that’s 100% exactly what you just said is is everybody has to keep moving their feet. Um the run that we hit in the second half um that Miles hit in the Philly game was a little bit the same way is okay, we’ve got hats on hats. It’s not going to be super clean like a walkthrough where you watch bang bang and then somebody hits it through. It’s the NFL, everybody’s good. So, we keep blocking, you keep running. Sometimes we’re going to find our way through in those situations. And it’s been good to be able to show those guys that on tape from the last couple of weeks is all right, it’s a it’s cloudy, but let’s keep playing football. Jar LCBS Sports. Clayton, what’s it like facing a team or or I guess a coordinator who double team CD Lamb as aggressively as they did in last year’s matchup game planning for facing that coordinator again uh this week? Um, I think that we’ve probably just come to expect that that’s what, you know, the kind of respect that CD Lamb um gets from other teams. And so, you know, that’s where when you’re looking at roster building in the offseason, those are things that that you you look at is, okay, well, when this is going to happen, what pieces are really important that we have in place that we can get to? Um, but I would say just in general, uh, it he seems to get that treatment from almost everybody. Tommy Tommy Artwiz.com. Clayton, Tyler Gayton, missing a lot of time in training camp. How would you assess how he’s played through the first two games, even when he’s, you know, young and missing those reps? Yeah, I I think that uh he and I were just talking about this the the other day. I mean, there’s been some really good reps and there’s been some reps that he probably wants back. And so, we’re we’re continuing to try to work on consistency, but I think he’s in a really good place mentally. And I think that, you know, the the training camp part of it for him for sure is is where the consistency we need to continue to go because, uh, he’s he’s really done a great job of of growing, maturing, um, putting himself in position to be successful. And I think when you evaluate a game, especially with a young guy, um when you see really good reps late in the game, uh when maybe in the middle or in the beginning there were some other reps that that weren’t good, it’s a very encouraging sign because that means he’s working through it and he’s battling. And when there’s, you know, something goes the way that you don’t want it to, you’re what you’re getting out of it is experience rather than disappointment. And so I’ve been really proud of him in that way. We’re going to keep keep working on getting better. Nick Harris, forwardstar telegram. Brock Hoffman’s play temperament demeanor. It’s it’s obviously high. Was there a moment in OTAAS or training camp that uh you know he he got a little hot and it it caught you by surprise or anything? So, definitely didn’t catch me by surprise. He uh Yeah. No, I mean he he uh he he gets upset and he definitely competes, but what I like about um uh you know his intensity is it’s generally about you know the entire group maybe making mental errors or or something like that. So he he’s got there there’s a lot of leadership qualities that he has to him and that’s certainly one of them is you know he demands the best out of himself and he demands the best out of his teammates. And does Dak’s responsibilities change pre- snap or is it a pretty seamless transition as far as responsibilities pre- snap? No, I mean you know Dak is is always in charge of almost everything because that’s the type of player that he is. But yeah, just in regards to what we would put on the center, I mean it would be the same with Brock as it would with anybody else. Patrick. Hey, Clayton. Patrick Balk at Dallascowboys.com. Through the first two weeks, Cavonte Turpin has proven to be a critical part of how you guys run your offense. Uh, he’s traded in the right direction, but in the event he can’t take the field against the Bears, does that force you into a different type of schematic, or do you feel you have the personnel to be able to supplement his absence and not have to abandon his portion of the playbook? Uh, well, that’s a that’s a good question. And I I think, you know, there are certainly things that only Turp is going to do, but I think that you have to go into a game with a diverse enough plan of things that, okay, well, you know what, instead of getting to this super specific thing that we were going to do for Turp, we’re going to try to take advantage of uh that piece of the defense in X, Y, or Z way. And so, you know, that was one of the things that we talked about last week when he was when he did go down during the game is, all right, let’s we want to be as specific as we possibly can, but we also need to have a plan for using, you know, all 48 of the guys that are up on game day. Um, and then also, you know, when he is available, he does a lot of special things, so you don’t want to take that away from him either. We’ll finish up with Pablober 1053. The fan Cowboys radio um Clayton on the the fumbled snap. I’ll call it. I don’t know how you define it, but uh you know, Brock has um Dexter Lawrence over him. You’re trying to sink your weight. Ball can come up short. You played center. Is that something that you specifically work on? Uh just the exchange. You personally, do you work with the centers on that? Yeah, I do. Yeah. And and uh and and last week we were I was trying my best to to look like Dexter Lawrence, but I don’t have I don’t have uh quite as much size and girth. But yeah, I think you you you want to try to put those guys in as a realistic a situation as possible. And then one of the things that we were trying to do some uh during drill work and scout team is just have a guy line up off sides. And so then they’re a little bit closer to you. You can really feel what that’s going to feel like when that guy gets lined up there.

Offensive Coordinator Klayton Adams met with the media to share his thoughts on patience in the running game, managing play maker targets and more.

  1. I like what Williams is doing on the ground but I think we need to find out what Blue and Mafah can do to add another gear to the run game.

They should explore that soon so we can make a decision before the trade deadline on maybe going after a game changing running back like Jonathan Taylor, Kamara, Breece Hall, are a few guys who could be available
