🔴LIVE 🔴Miami Marlins VS Philadelphia Phillies/ September 25 /MLB THE SHOW 25
This the show has an NL East matchup. It’s the Miami Marlins taking on the Philadelphia Phillies. Hi folks, John Chambi alongside Chris Singleton and Singi here in Philadelphia. The hometown fans are excited. This is one of the best places to play when you’re playing well. No one more passionate than these Philadelphia Phillies fans. And this ballpark still one of the most beautiful parks in all of baseball. First pitch coming your way next. Just about set to go now. Today’s starting pitcher, Christopher Sanchez. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. And most guys, they get a little tight. They start to aim the baseball. But for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life. And he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Augustine Ramirez getting ready to hit. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Ruer at first with no outs here. Hit hard. Should be extra bases. Lopez headed for third. Coming home. He will score and they take the lead. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. So digging in, Jacob Marcy at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Ramirez at second with nobody out. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult, especially for a left-handed hitter to track. Got him swinging. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect. And halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. And now Connor Norby, strike one. Man at second up the middle. Throws to first in time. Take a look at the lineup. They’re dealing with a top level arm on the mound. So, this figures to be a tough matchup for him. What’s the key to the offense today, Singy? Well, Boo, I think when you got a guy that’s this talented on the mound, you got to find ways to disrupt his rhythm, make him uncomfortable a little bit. The guys that can handle the bat and perhaps, you know, bunt bunt for a base hit, get him moving off the mound. If you’re in the box and he seems to be just in a flow, step out, mess up his timing, somehow try to get in his head a little bit. And then when he does come in the zone, you may only get one pitch. You better not miss it. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball two. Swing and a miss. And Singi as a team, you need to make the most of the very few opportunities he’s going to give you. Right. Absolutely. And and you know, if you don’t get to guys like this a lot of times early, once they Oh, that ball finds its way into the outfield. A base hit. Runner from third comes across. It’s an RBI single. It’s two nothing. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there’s just no one there to knock it down. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. That one finds the zone and one. And there’s a ball. up the middle. Oh, nice play. And very nicely done for the out. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Marlins two and the Phillies coming up. And we’re back. And towing the slab in this one, Edward Cabrera. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today, but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Harrison Bader, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across, this is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh, you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. On the ground to the left, zips it across. One up, one down. And time now for the Phillies lineup. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Bryson Stock. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Kyle Schwarber at the plate now. That’s ball one. And that one moves his feet. One out. Base is empty. Right side. And that one handled. Tosses to first. And two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight. Alec Bow. Two down, base is empty. And here comes Alec Bow. Come on. Outside low. One and0 into center. Makes a nice grab at a full sprint. And that is that back here in Philadelphia. And here’s the first baseman, Eric Wagaman. Let’s go, Philly. Sanchez back to work. That one’s in there. Strike one. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. Swing and a liner. Base hit out into right center field. Around first and hustling for second. And he’s got a leadoff double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Griffin Conai the next up for the Marlins. That’s a strike. It’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here at the top of the second. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout. And there’s one away. And at the plate for Miami, Dane Meyers. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. Brown’s third headed for the plate. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores and they’re up by three. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. So up next, Otto Lopez one for one with a single so far. That one fouled off on the mound. He’s got to remember his offense can score a lot. So, if he can hit the reset button from here going forward, there’s still a chance that his club can win this ball game. And a foul ball. Here comes a pitch that misses. And that’s ball one. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. That one not close and it’s two and two. Man at first one away. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. runner on the move. Got him swinging. Safe at second and he easily steals the bag. Number 15. And now for the Marlins. Augustine Ramirez. He doubled home a run in his first AB. Oh, what a stop. The throw. Nicely done for the hour. Well, that right there was all pre- pitch positioning. Put himself in the perfect spot to make a great play. And welcome back to the ballpark. Brandon Marsh steps to the plate. Brandon Marsh right back to him on the mound in plenty of time to first and quickly one away in the second. adding fifth catcher JT. And now it’s JT Riuto. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. Flo to right field way back gone. So he blasts one out the other way. His 13th home run of the season. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 3-1. Just a nice job. Recognizes off speed as that leg hangs in the air a little bit, but he gets it down. Hits against a strong and firm front side. And that’s uh knocking a cheese steak out of somebody’s lap. I would be upset if somebody knocked a cheese steak out of my lap. I’ll tell you that. I don’t think that’s possible. You’re too quick. Max Kepler batting with one down. Takes a strike. The change up missing and one and one. Dave Lawrence behind the plate today. consistent and pretty accurate with the balls and strikes. Yeah, he’s one of those guys, Spook, that just keeps the game moving. Nothing overly unique about the strike zone that he calls and as a result, he’s appreciated by both sides. And that is downstairs and it’s two and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And that’s in for a strike to the right side. Edwards fires to first in time. Batting seven, second base Wilson. Two outs, space is empty. And digging in for Philadelphia. Weston Wilson. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Foul ball there. Two outs. Base is empty. And makes the play. And that’s out number three. But not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. And this is now a 31 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. New inning getting started. And at the plate for Miami, Jacob Marcy line drive. And that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second. It’s a leadoff double to start the third. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Just a great approach. Looked like that was exactly what he wanted to do with that pitch. And right off the bat, he knew he was taking that wide turn at first to head for second. Next to hit, Connor Norby just missed. inside. Move to second. Marcy back on a dive. Come on, Billy. Squirts away a little bit to third. Tag. Got him. Well, you want to see guys aggressive out there on the base paths, but you also want to see them smart as well and making their decisions. And right there, he couldn’t really tell how far away that ball was. So, if that’s the case, you got to shut it down. He gets caught stealing there. Takes himself out of scoring position. One down. Base is empty. They had a foul ball. That one finds the zone. Two and two. Well, he looks fresh out there. Just needs to get a little more confidence and remember how good he’s been in the past. Missed with a change up and the count’s full. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. swing and a high-fly ball in the air left field. Kepler on the move to the alley. He’s got it and there’s two away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Come on. Hernandez in his rookie season hitting fifth in today’s lineup. And he was born in the Dominican Republic. Ripped on a line to center. Bader pulls it in to end the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Marlins three and the Phillies one. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Leading off, Bryson stop singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. ground ball to the right side. Steps out first for the out. Batting ninth, first baseman number four. And now the first baseman swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Hauls it in for the out. Two away. Now batting and now Bader up to the plate. Grounded out his first time. just missed. You want to be patient here. Try to work a walk if you can. You’ve got a big power bat behind you in the on deck circle and with two outs, one swing could put you right back in this ball game. And that one is lifted in the air and the inning is over. So they make short work of them there. On to inning number four. It’s the Marlins three and the Phillies one. Back here in Philadelphia, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Xavier Edwards. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Booga. Never got to play at Citizens Bank Park in my career. Just the old Veteran Stadium in Philadelphia. But the crowds here just as energetic now as they were at that old park. And trust me, as an outfielder visiting town, you’re going to hear it from the fans out there in the bleachers. falling behind. Two and one right through there for a strike. That misses the zone. Three balls, two strikes on the ground right side. Wilson over to first. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting number 33. So digging in, Eric Wagaman. Doubled in his first AB. That one the other way. calls it in. Two away. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Yeah, the batter now, Griffin Con. He’s 0 for one and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. and a swing and a miss. Two really good back-to-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Just off the inside edge. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Way inside. stays alive. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Three up, three down that time. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Marlins three and the Phillies one. Back at Citizens Bank Park. Here’s some real power at the plate. Kyle Schwarber. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Every comes up empty. That’s strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So runner aboard to start the inning. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And now it’s Alec Bow. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. Hit on the ground to short and it finds its way through for a hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Waste no time there. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. and you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Brandon March. Grounded out his first time. Finds his way through base hit. And they’re happy to play station to station right here. Base is loaded, nobody out. Liam Hicks coming into the game now as the injury replacement. Number 34. Here comes Real Muto. Golden opportunity right here. First pitch and he just misses. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit. Swing and a miss. You need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. And now it’s one and two. Fouls it back with two strikes. Schwarber at third. Bone on second. Marsh at first with no outs. And that’s downstairs. And the count now even up. Way to lay off that pitch down. That’s to third. Here’s Edwards for one. Throw sails over his head at first. Well, they had the chance of turning two right there, but I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand. They say you can’t assume a double play. I beg to differ at the big league level, but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice. Kepler. Kepler takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. Tying run in scoring position. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth in the dirt. Well done behind the dish. swing and a miss. Strike one. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. Still try to get that ground ball double play at the dish. Looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boo. Next offering is down low. So, here we go. Base runner at first. Could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position, even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. One down. Phillies down a run to third. And that’s a fair ball. One runs in. Runner around third on his way to the plate. The relay throw. and he’s safe at the plate as they take the lead. It’s four to three. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. One out, runner at second. Here’s the second baseman, Weston Wilson. That one catches the zone and it’s 0 and one. lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Hernandez pulls it down and there’s two gone. This is Bryson stop 0 for one so far. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. swings and blasts one deep to left center. Hernandez going back on this one. And that one hops the wall. The run comes in to score from second. It’s 53. Comes through with the RBI. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. So, runner at second, two down. Next is the speedy first baseman outside low and it’s one and0. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Man on second, two down. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. Swing and a miss. There’s that change up. And a swing and a miss. Inning ends and that stops the bleeding. So they move out in front after a fourrun outburst. We played four. Gets the Phillies five and the Marlins three. And we’re back. We go to the top of the fifth. Now it’s the right fielder Dane Meyers. Let’s go. Sanchez back to work off the plate and that’s ball one. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Back to the top of the lineup and the batter now, Otto Lopez singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two and that’s in there for strike one. You know, these Marlins really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. One thing is they haven’t been fooled all that much. Six of their hits have come off off speed pitches. And that one hammered. That’s back there. Out of here. His 16th homer of the year. And we’re all square. It’s 55. This game is breathing new life thanks to that home run. And that’s exactly what they needed. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. So it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. And now Augustine Ramirez and ball one. And that success against off- street pitches tells me they’re doing a great job of seeing the ball deep, letting the ball travel, and then just trying to use the whole field. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Next offering is in for a strike. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. That one missed. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked outside and that is ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that wall. Go ahead. Run on base. And up next for Miami, Jacob Marcy, one for two. On the ground, left side, six, four, three, and they turn the double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Here’s the third baseman, Connor Norby. Bowl for two in this one. And a big swing and a miss. in one. That’s off the mark. And now it’s even one and one. Some bullpen action for Philadelphia. Ranger Suarez appears to be getting loose. Banks getting loose as well. The 1-1 sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit around first heading for two. Throws to second and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Back here, Citizens Bank Park, we head to the bottom of the fifth. And now for the Phillies, Harrison Bader. Check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first. He did not go around. Two balls, no strikes to count. Well, these Phillies doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it, they’re producing more than a hit per inning. That’s too low. Three and one. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. Phillies. This one in the air. Norby and there’s one down. Now batting rightielder. Kyle Schwarber comes up to hit here. And there’s a foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. All tied up. Last half of inning number five. Strike three. Got him with the back door breaking ball. Chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Alec Bow now at the plate. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. just missed. Just misses with that one. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another and it remains two and two. Here’s a rocket out to left. He’s got it. And that is that down quickly go the Phillies and this remains a five ball game. Ranger Suarez gets handed the rock out of the pen and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of contact, not a lot of hits period. And here is Ariberto Hernandez. Suarez in his sixth season, 29 years old and he was born in Venezuela. Action in the pen down there. David Robertson up and throwing. Lazar also throwing on the ground to third and he can’t come up with it. still finds a way to get off a throw and save. Couldn’t recover from the misplay. Pretty much gifted a lead off base runner right there. And as an offense, this is where you really want to take advantage. Apply some pressure this inning. Make that error hurt. Go ahead run on base. And now for the Marlins. Xavier Edwards. A switch hitter batting right. Runner on the go. Hammered on the line. base hit. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. Now it’s going to be Liam Hicks. to the right side and that chance handled. Throws to first in time, but the go-ahead run comes in to score. Now batting hitter Griffin Con. Griffin Konai the next up for the Marlins who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Curveball kind of backed up on him there. I think it just slid out of the hand a little bit too soon. in the air. Right field. Schwarber sizes this one up. Two away now. Now batting rightielder Dane Meers. Dane Meyers the next up for the Marlins. Oh, bottom of the order here. Boog. You got to go right after this guy as they look to pick up an add-on run. And the number nine guy at the plate. And that misses ball one. Edwards at second with two down. That one drilled left field. Could be extra bases. The throw into second. He pulls into second as a run scores. Picks himself up an RBI. Put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left. didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence, but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Otto Lopez, he’s already homered in this game. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. And that one fouled off on the ground right side and foul ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. Next offering is downstairs. Fights it off. You’ll see another Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. But two runs for him and they jump ahead to the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Marlins seven and the Phillies five. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Ryan Weathers. He’s been so good against lefties. Ryan Weathers. And now it’s the cleanup spot for the Phillies. Brandon March. Brandon March. Phillies. swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Signs of activity in the pen for the Marlins. Lake Backer up and loosening in the pen. And that is out of play. headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. Weathers fires. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. JT Rio Mutoo steps in. He’s already homered here in this one. In for a strike 0 and one. The Fish trying to protect a two-run lead here in the bottom of the sixth. That one just misses. Three and two now. Didn’t get the result he wanted, but that’s a nice pitch right there. And a foul ball. stays alive. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. Now batting Max Kepler. And it’s fouled away. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Two outs. One ball, two strikes. That missed by a lot. Two balls, two strikes. The count fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Marlins seven and the Phillies five. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Orion Kirkering just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Or now the catcher up to hit Augustine Ramirez. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. to the right side to first and the lead off hitter set down to open the seven. Good armside run and sink on that pitch right there. Got inside on him and got him to bounce into that out. So up next, Jacob Marcy one for three. fought off foul. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. Ground ball left side and it goes just foul. One down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. And down on strikes and two away to start the seven. Now that Conor Norby the next up for the Marlins. That one found hard the other way. Yo, one swing and a miss. And he was fooled. Man, that was pretty gross right there. And that one is inside ball one he never moved because he never had time to with that kind of velocity. You’d prefer that pitcher work away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And it’s a three up three down inning. And the Marlins down quietly. They lead it seven to five. pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Lake Backer. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. And now Weston Wilson. Weston Wilson. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Gets the call and it’s one and one. Fast ball is outside. That clips a corner. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. stop in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. The Phils trailing by two here in the bottom of the seventh. And another ball inside. And that’s ball three. And there’s the automatic. 3-1 and he couldn’t come up with it. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. And here’s the first baseman now. I’ll move to first and he’s back in safely. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. the tying run at the plate. Swing and he popped it off. Edwards and there’s two down. Now batting center fielder Harrison Bader. So here’s Bader now 0 for three in this one. turned on, but that’s fouled down the third baseline. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Stop off of first with two away. Cut on and lifted in the air. Hernandez on his way over. drops into the glove and that will end the inning. One left for Philadelphia and they’re down seven to five. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eight. Tanner Banks. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So the defense should be active. So digging in, Ariberto Hernandez Hernandez. And that one fouled off. He swings and fouls one off. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Rips one to left. That’s a base hit. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in and he greetss the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Good two- strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And at the plate for Miami, Xavier Edwards. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Right through there for a strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. Way inside. Gets out of the way. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. And we’re in the top of the eighth. On the ground, tosses to first. First out in the top of the eighth. Now batting first base Liam Hicks. And up next for Miami, Liam Hicks. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Swung on. Belted way back there. Can’t get to it as it drops into the corner. Pulls into second. That’s an RBI double. Now batting hitter Griffin Con. So now here’s the DH. Griffin Kai 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. Checks his swing. Appeal down to third and that’s going to be ruled a swing. Runner at second here. One gone. Next offering is fouled back. Ripped on the ground to second. Gets it to first. And they got him. Now batting rightielder Dane Meyers. And now for the Marlins. Dane Meyers three for three with two singles and a double. That one pushed foul. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Sto over to first in time. They limit the damage here, but a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now 85. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. George Soraniano. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. And Kyle Schwarber will come up. The Phillies in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. Need a good at bat out of him right here. In there at the knees. Strike one. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Check swing called strike and the count is 0 and two. Swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt. Gets to it onto first. Got him one away on the strikeout. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Alec Bow stands in for the Phillies. Just missed. The Phils trailing by three near the bottom half of the eighth inning. A change up missing now two and 0. Swing and a foul out of play. gets him to chase after that one. Two balls, two strikes. Got him swinging for the strike out. Pulled the string on the change up. As you can see, got him way out in front with that off speed pitch. He was set up perfectly by the previous pitch. Good fast ball, speed up the hitter’s timing, and then all of a sudden with a really good arm action, same arm speed, could not recognize the change up. Marsh stands in here, takes ball one low, starts him off with the breaking ball, which isn’t surprising. They’re trying to keep him off balance, but he’s been known to connect on the breaking stuff, too. Next offering upstairs and another ball. There’s the strike. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. around first and hustling for second. The throw in in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one. He pulled it hard into the outfield and even when you keep it on the ground, it feels great when you hit a missile like that. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. And up to the plate is JT Real Mutoo. That one outside. Ball one. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. liner and this could be trouble. Headed for the plate. He’ll score. Seeing some good swings from him right now with consecutive extra base hits. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. really important at bat coming up now. Max Kepler at the plate in the air left field. Hernandez ranging back and that ends the inning. Phillies with the runscoring double. It’s now 86. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Matt Stum. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Back to the top of the order now. Now it’s the Marlins leadoff hitter, Otto Lopez. known for his late inning heroics. Stro has a pretty cool hobby. Collects baseball cards of players who hit home runs off of them. I love the reason he does it. He tells people, “If you hit a home run against me, you’re good enough to collect.” Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Tim Mesa preparing to come on if needed. Trevino, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. inside ball. That one down the line and that’s just foul. swings here and blasts one left field. That’s down. One hops off the wall. It’s a double. Third hit of the night for him. Oh, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Augustine Ramirez. the next up for the Marlins. There’s a swing and a drive. That one carrying and it one hops the wall. Lopez scores and they take a threerun lead. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. and he’ll feel real good about that one. So, a man aboard, Jacob Marcy digs in now, one for four with a double. There’s the strike. late on that fast ball. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Ramirez leads off second with nobody out. Ground ball to Bow. Boom throws out to first. Now one gone in the ninth. Now batting third base Conor Norby. And now it’s going to be Connor Norby. swings through that one for strike one. and one swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now a chance for Ariberto Hernandez. Hernandez. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Next offering misses and the count is filled up. Man at second. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. So glad these ballparks have installed the netting to protect the fans, keep things safer all around the league. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Bader makes the catch and that’ll do it. Marlins get a run on the RBI double. It’s now a 96 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Ronnie Enriquez. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan, more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Now it’s the second base, Weston Wilson. Weston Wilson. Swing and a miss as he was late. In the air, left field down the line and it’s just fouled. So close to possible extra bases right there. Just couldn’t keep it fair down the line. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Ramirez pulls that one down and a quick out number one. Now batting short stop Bryson stops. He’s two outs away and the batter will be the shorts stop. Bryson stop. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. One down, base is empty. Just missed. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Next offering is in for a strike. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And a pop up right side. Foul territory. Puts it away for the out and there’s two away. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him instead of a line drive or something hit deep. It’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Hit to right and that should do it. And he’s got it. Ball game and the Marlins slug their way to a win in this one. The number seven is such a cool and sort of lucky number. Well, this team has been playing really well, but to win seven games in a row, uh there’s been some luck and there’s been some really good play. I think you get to this point, you start to look at, can we double that? Make it double digits, make it two touchdowns, make it 14. 96 the final in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
