SUMMER WORK πŸ€ | Under The Hood S5 E2

I think what we set out to do from an environmental and a cultural standpoint um we were able to do which is which is great especially in year one. I think our guys are really excited um not only about what we achieved but looking forward to um getting better um and then what how can we take a step the next season. So you have some breaking news for us right now. The Pistons had to go a crazy route in free agency. You do not look concerned whatsoever though. If you just think back last summer when you look at the Tobias Harris, those signings, they didn’t really like you didn’t go, “Oh my god, this is great or whatever.” And then look how the season turned out. I do have something just for you, L. Okay. Free agent sharpshooter Duncan Robinson is leaving the Heat after seven seasons to join the Detroit Pistons. You get Caris Levert, you get Duncan Robinson. Two guys that have played deep in the playoffs. Do you think the Pistons will be better than they were last season? I do. There’s a couple things they’ve got going for them. Number one, Kate Cunningham is still getting better. Absolutely. You say he made third team all NBA, he could make second or first in the future. Those guys develop like we say they they should. The Pistons should be fine. They won 44 games last year. I think our guys have been in the gym working a lot. They want to get better. So, I think we will see growth from our young players from this year to next year. And I think that’s ultimately what’s really important for us cuz if those guys get better, we’ll ultimately get better. [Music] I came along. I came along way. I came along way. I came along. [Music] sitting down with us right now, head coach of the Detroit Pistons, JB Bickstab. JB, thank you for joining us here on SiriusXM NBA Radio’s Las Vegas Summer League. the big acquisitions this off seasonason, Duncan Robinson and Caris Levert. Talk to us about what was it about those guys that was appealing to you? Uh, well, Caris, you know, we were together in Cleveland. He’s one of the most adaptable guys I’ve ever been around. I think you can plug and play him with darn nearly anybody. He can go out there and guard ones, twos, and threes. He can handle he can be a secondary ball handler. He can play on, he can play off depending on the lineup. So, I think he’s shown that throughout his career, and he’s a high level competitor. Uh, score for himself, create for others. So, uh, I’m I’m confident that JB is going to find a really good role for him within our system. And then obviously with Duncan, you know, the spacing he brings, the respect that people have for him as a shooter, you know, the fun part about it like us as coaches, like you can just imagine all the ATO’s you get to draw, you know what I mean, to get him those shots. Uh, and again, a guy who’s been through it, right, with Miami, uh, made a bunch of playoff runs, played a bunch of playoff games. So, like those are the steps we’re trying to take. So those guys uh are two guys that can help push our younger guys. And again, I give Tjan a ton of credit uh because he understands how to build team, you know. So like even though we have our young guys and our plan is for those guys to elevate and get better, you got to put the right veterans around them so that they can get better. And I think Tra did a great job with those two guys. You get Caris Levert, you get Duncan Robinson. Two guys that have played deep in the playoffs, the guys can still play and they’re veterans as well. And I always talk about we got to have vets. So you’re still bringing in two veterans. You got to love this game. You got to respect the game and you got to work at it. You know what I mean? Today we’re all in here together. We all get to do it together. So, let’s have fun with it. All right. I really appreciate y’all. Really appreciate all the parents. Thank y’all. Work hard every day in everything you do in the classroom, on the court, on the field, or whoever’s playing football, soccer, whatever y’all are doing. you know, work hard every day and try to be your best self every day. What’s up, y’all? First of all, fun to see everybody out here. Appreciate y’all coming out. [Applause] Good pass. Knock down. [Music] There you go. No, that was that was they showed love and they was hooping, too. Like that’s some that’s some guys that going to be real good soon. So, it was cool to see. Really cool to see. away from here. I know [Music] it cut. Good job. Good pace. face. always thought. Here we go. Good job. [Music] Still I won’t [Applause] [Music] say [Music] bring it in and break it down. Bring it in and break it down. [Music] together. 1 2 3. This is all about getting in the gym, getting after it, having fun, enjoying being together, and building this basketball community we have here in this area. I want to thank you guys all for being here. This day is super special to me. This is a gym I grew up playing in all the time. This is an area I grew up playing in and this place means so much to me. So, thank you guys. I know you guys have probably all had amazing summers. You’re back to school. There’s so many different things you could be doing, but you chose to be here in the gym with all of us. Drive left, move left. Drive left, move. Drive left, move left. Let’s go. You’re going this way. No job is too small, man. No job is too small on camp day. You know, for me, part of the reason why I really want to do this is I want these kids to know that having aspirations in the sport is is totally feasible and attainable. I want the world to know that I mean, I was all about giving back to my community and the knowledge I’ve learned dealing with basketball, life skills, and just being able to just give that back. Maybe a place far away from here for all I know. Here we go. Y’all get in moments where it’s going to be crowds. Everybody going to be in your ear. Just calm down. Breathe. Just work on breathing techniques, things like that, and just play the game free. I’m telling you, it’s going to be way more moments like that you going to have in your life, bro. I’m telling you. We need a break. Yo, come on. Break it out. Together. Together. On three. One, two, three. Here we go. Yeah. Here we go. [Music] The key here is going to be internal development. A lot of people talk about Jay Navy, but you also need to see more from Lar Thompson. You need to see more from Jaylen Duran. You also need to see more from Ron Holland. Been working his butt off, too. uh he’s been in the gym. The thing that he wants to do at some point is be defensive player of the year. So, uh working on his strength that he didn’t get to do last year, getting in better shape, working on his different abilities to get shots to create shots, the ball handling, the shot creation, uh and then just getting stronger. Uh it’s one thing that we he couldn’t do all last summer because of the restrictions. So having him in the weight room, uh movement efficiency, so when he is getting in those situations, he’s can be a little bit more on balance in terms of getting a shot or finishing at the rim, but uh he’s excited. We’re excited for him to have an entire summer to develop, not only um on the floor, but also in the weight room. And I think they’re better because their young guys are going to continue to get better. And I specifically look at like Assar Thompson, give him a full season, something is going to is going to pop there. Like I think he’s got a chance to level like two levels up in one season. Like I I think their supporting cast is better. I just think they’re better. Yeah. I think the one thing that does get lost in all this to be honest with you is is Ji’s return. I mean a lot of people are saying you know who you fill and who you help and these guys are exiting. I said well we have a pretty good free agent pickup and in Ji and so I think he’s going to fill a lot of those point guard roles and playmaking roles and but will fill in that. your head. [Music] If those guys develop like we say they they should, the Pizz should be fine. They won 44 games last year. Just that little get a little internal development, they can get [Music] Yeah, the vibes are are incredible. Um, super young, youthful, ambitious team. You know, for me with where I’m at in my career, this has just been like a breath of fresh air being around these guys. Um, they have high aspirations and I feel like I can fit right into that. You know, help us take another step. Uh, just pour into them and and do whatever I can to help this team and this organization, you know, compete for a championship.
