“Everyone makes mistakes, including myself,” Staal said. “As an 18-year-old kid, I’ve done some stupid stuff. I went to jail. I had to go through a lot of crap because of it, and it wasn’t fun. I had to go through some crappy times, but I owned it.” “Media guys all want a little piece of them, and everyone wants to write their own little snippet and not miss out on the juicy stuff,” he said. “That’s part of making mistakes, too.” – Jordan Staal per Mark Lazarus of The Athletic
"Obviously, that’s news to me,” Brind’Amour said. “Rumors are rumors. Every time there’s a player out there, they always say that our team’s involved. I haven’t given it much thought, but any player that comes here would be welcomed with open arms. That’s the only reason we’re bringing someone into this family. You’ve got to treat them like that. You’re talking about a hypothetical, but that’s how I would approach it. That’s on the player. It does nothing for me.” – Rod Brind’Amour

Average “Say No to Gay” Staal brother take

Oy….
The fuck is wrong with you Jordan. This shit isn’t a mistake
I’ve been saying this … as long as the guys in the locker room are okay with it, and the morale of the team isn’t impacted, then fuck it.
I didn’t follow the case at all, so I don’t have all the facts with me; all I have is a bit guilty verdict, and trust in Rod, GMET, and the locker room.
Bring Carter Hart to the Canes!!!

I’ve come to determine the staals are genuinely not good people off the ice
Anyone who has a negative take to the reasonable and measured take Jordo has on this, should really really take a breath and realize no one on earth is perfect.
Excited for the day that Aho is our captain
I’ve made many mistakes in my life, never had to go to a sexual assault trial for them.
this reads like we’re really in on some of these players, and PR has told our guys to make it sound like they’re okay with it and doing damage control for new signings that’ll probably cause backlash.
Hart is the obvious pick up, but I could also see us being in on McLeod cause he’d be really useful for either affiliate.
I kind of feel bad for Jordan here a little (only a little because he clearly framed sexual assault as a mistake) – but the canes PR team really failed him.
This is such a charged topic and one wrong word can blow up and lead to a quote like this becoming news, when a “I can’t really comment on things right now” would’ve been fine and ended the story. He can’t say “fuck those rapists” as much as we would like him to.
Jordan was dumb and said a stupid thing instead, but what do you expect from an older, conservative hockey player with zero social media. These are grown men that are uncomfortable wearing a rainbow logo for 15 minutes too.
PR team should be prepping the team but clearly didn’t. Zero media training clearly. Another organizational failure.
If you don’t think most of our other players probably have a similar if not exact same opinion, you’re gonna have a bad time
This is a really bad sound bite from a professional sports star. He could’ve said something along the lines of “the acquittal means they aren’t guilty but doesn’t absolve them from accepting some personal responsibility for putting themselves in a position to be accused and found deserving of a trial.” I will point out that the presumption of innocence is a hallmark of western justice. Flipping that to a presumption of guilt based on the mobs outrage is a genie that isn’t washout back in the bottle. Sexual offenders are fucking scum and should be held accountable to the highest extent. I just think that every person should have their right to a trial by jury not trial by mob.
