đź”´ LIVE : Houston Astros vs Los Angeles Angels | Sept 26th FULL GAME | MLB THE SHOW 25 SIMULATION
Just about set to go now. Today’s starting pitcher, USA Kikuchi. And Singi, he likes pitching at home. Well, truly for him, there is no place like home. He’s been so dominant here. And as a teammate, you expect him when pitching at home this year to go out and dominate just as he has. The fans expected and I think everyone around here knows that he’s a good pitcher. Even though we don’t see the same splits on the road, we’re going to start to see that translate as well. And stepping in for the Astros, Jose Altuve. [Applause] That’s in for a strike at 95. And that’s how this game gets started. Here comes the pitch. That’s a little bit low. One ball, one next pitch is outside. [Applause] and downstairs. [Music] [Applause] That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past, and it’s an issue once again early on. Now, at the plate, Isak Paredus. on the corner for a strike. Yeah, that’s fouled off. cut out and miss. Curve ball struck him out. Well, I don’t think there’s a hitter alive that hasn’t at some point succumbed to that pitch right there. It just looks like it’s in the zone the entire way and then the top spin and gravity take over in the blink of an eye. And it’s just such a tough pitch to lay off of. Here’s Carlos Koreah. late on that fast ball. That misses and it’s one and one. man at first. One away. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Now two and two. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll lead at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here, clearly letting the ump hear it a little bit. Here’s a two- two strike three and that’s two in a row. Man, I really like the ability to bounce back right there after not getting a call. He probably should have got it. Didn’t let it affect his focus. And he came back with another good pitch to get him swinging. And now it’s Christian Walker in there and it’s 0 and one. He’s a bad ball hitter. So even if you get him to chase pitches outside the zone, he still might beat you. Not an easy out by any means. [Music] [Applause] Now this is in the air down the line. Ward sizing this one up and that’ll do it. So, the Astros leave one and now the Angels will get their first opportunity in this one. No score. You’re dialed into the show back here at Angel Stadium. And today on the hill, JP France. Well, one thing for me that’s a little alarming is that this guy is walking more than he’s striking out. And when you’ve got traffic on the base paths, one mistake can put your team behind the eightball early in a ball game. So, we’ll see today if somehow he’s able to reverse that trend, fill up the strike zone, get some soft contact, and perhaps move through this ball game without too much damage. Makes the grab. One down. All right, let’s take a look at the Angels lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Taylor Ward stands in now and watches strike one. One out, base is empty. Hammered down the right side but foul. That one misses and the count one and two and that’s outside. [Applause] Next offering upstairs. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Cut on and lifted in the air. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. Rose to second in there safely. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good on it. One out, runner at second. Here comes Yan Mona in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. This one in the air center field. Meyers moving back for this one. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Batting fourth right fielder Joe Adele. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Here’s Joe Adele. Chris, it’s been a good year for him, having already set a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. And that is out of play. Ward on its second with two down. Ball one there. [Applause] The 1-1 is fouled off. Man on second, two down. Pitch misses there. Two balls, two strikes. And there’s a ball. Luis Rangifo in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Man at second. that one down the line and that’s a fair ball headed for the plate and he can’t come up with it. He’ll score and the Angels take the lead and he’ll pull into second safely. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying his mechanics. Luis Reno gets a chance to hit here. right through there for a strike. Two outs and one in scoring position the other way and that’s a base hit coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe and the runner from second scores on the play and they lead by two. Picks himself up an RBI. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. [Applause] Christian Moore the next to hit for the Angels. And that one upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] Fought off foul. Next pitch is downstairs. Well, lots of pitches thrown in this first inning and it’s kind of that nightmare scenario for starting pitching, but you know, ah, that’s strike three and the third out. So, we take a break, but two runs for him and they jump ahead. Second inning coming up from Anaheim. Angels two and the Astros nothing. New inning getting started. So now the Astros designated hitter, Jesus Sanchez. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. That’s in there, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. That one ripped. Brings it in with a nice running grab. One away. They trust him in center field because he’s capable of making plays on the run. And you saw it right there. That’s a player you want patrolling center field. Someone who can attack the ball off the bat. Kikuchi measures 6 feet even, 210 lbs, and he was born in Japan. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. One down. Base is empty. And a swing and a miss and he’s registered. Three Ks in this one. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. right there. He was clearly anxious. He was swinging. This one’s into the outfield. Could be extra bases and into second easily with a two out double. Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Zack Cole up next for the Astros. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Runner at second. Two down here in the top of the second [Music] and a pop off right side. Foul territory. Shanowell on his way over. Drops into the glove and that’s the third out. No runs, one hit, a double. No errors and one man left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. Angels two and the Astros nothing. Bottom half of inning number two. The batter will be the shortstop. Oswald PZA France back to work and he takes a strike saying he wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff at the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. And it’s a tough place to be cuz it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly though. That one ran inside. Almost got him. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. And here’s the catcher. Splits the plate. That’s strike one. [Music] Swang and a miss. Carl Dixon doing the umpiring behind the plate. And Boo, I’m not sure if it’s because he sort of sets up higher than most, but one thing to be aware of with Dixon is the high strike. Not usually a big deal because most players are swinging at pitches up there, but we may see some surprise looks from hitters from time to time because that’s just so unusual. And the one two misses to even the count. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field and puts the squeeze on that one and there are two down batting ninth center fielder two out space is empty and here’s the rookie center fielder this guy’s just a tremendously talented center fielder gold glove caliber type out there offensively he can do some things, but you know, also has some streakiness as well. I think the key just trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out. You know, he saves runs in the outfield, so that’s going to buy him more time to work things out at the dish. Two out. Space is empty. Up the middle, lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And they don’t get the out. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. They got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And here is Nolan Shaw. And that one hammered gone. That’ll fire up the dugout. His 12th of the season. It’s 4 nothing. That was blasted. Absolutely no doubt off the bat. Well, he went up there O looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. So, two down. Taylor Ward the next to hit for the Angels. He swings and fouls one off. [Applause] [Applause] That one is absolutely belted. That’s going back back some more. And out of here they do it again. back-to back homers. He’s up to three home runs in the series and they add on. It’s five zip. Backto back home runs and they keep adding to their lead. Backto back jacks and this club is fired up right now, Boog. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. And now Yan Mona flyed to center his first time. Foul ball there. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across. Bottom half of inning number two. Ripped but a curls. Foul. [Applause] goes down looking, but two round trippers in this inning. The long ball was working and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Top half of the third inning. Now, the third baseman, Ramonas. Ramon Urias swinging a foul out of play. Swing and a foul. Pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt and it beats him for the first out after the drop third strike. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days. That’s a devastating combination. So the Houston lineup turns over. Jose Altuve up to hit here inside corner for a strike. 0 and one comes up empty. at strike two. There’s a good change up to hit up in the zone. I don’t think he recognized it. I’m sure he’d love to have that one back in the air left field down the line and that drops foul. [Applause] Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Adele moves under it. Puts it away for the out. Now batting right here. Two down, base is empty. And next to hit for Houston, Isach Paradus struck out swinging his first time. That one finds a corner. It’s 0 and one. And ball one. That one called just inside, I think. and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. And a one-1. And a foul ball. Go. Still two and two after the foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swings and misses. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Offense held in check there. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. Angels five and the Astros nothing. And we’re back. And here is Joe Adele. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. That’s off the mark. Ball one. I think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game. He’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start. You know, these Angels doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game, and the numbers back that up. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. That one in the dirt. And that’s ball two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Outside low and the count’s full. battling here as he fouls it away. Quite the matchup we’re seeing here. Six foul balls in this at bat alone. Really making him work out there. Swinging a ground ball onto first. He made the pitcher earn that out after a long at batting. Third baseman Luise Reo. So in now for the Angels. Luis Rangifo RBI single his last time up. Ground ball right side. The flip. Nicely done for the out. Now batting second baseman Christian Moore. Two outs. Space is empty. And next for LA, Christian Moore struck out swinging his first time. [Music] Ball one, no strikes. Activity in the Houston bullpen from Valdez. The left-handed reliever appears to be getting loose. Blue ball getting loose as well. Two down. Nobody on. And another ball. [Applause] That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. [Music] Two outs. Fouls. One off. Two and two. And he hits a ground ball right side. And that’s just foul. [Music] Pitch in the dirt. And that’s ball three. [Applause] Struck him out looking. So they make short work of him there. Three innings complete. Angels five and the Astros nothing. Back in Anaheim, John Chi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Carlos Koreah. Angels. All right, Angel. gets the outside corner with that one. Well, these Astros just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. The shorts stop takes the ball. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. Got him swinging. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Christian Walker Christian Walker digs in now. Fly to left his first time. That one’s in there. 0 and one. The Angels leading by five. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a high-fly ball. Ragged field. Adele moves under it. Hauls it in for the out. [Applause] Up next for the Astros. Two down. Base is empty. So next up for Houston, Jesus Sanchez. 0 for one so far. Missed with a change up. And that’s ball one. And that’s downstairs and outside. Now one out to right. Adele in position, feeling for the wall, makes the catch and found ground. Three up, three down that time. We’re midway in the fourth. Angels five and the Astros nothing. Now pitching for and from Valdez into the game. He’s pitching on two days rest. So digging in Oswwell PZA the short stop Aza and first offering is fouled off. He’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen, you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah. And that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking his own and attacking hitters regardless of the situation. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. Dives. What a play. Now batting number 38. This dive wasn’t the result of a bad route. Singy. The only reason he made the play is because his route was so good. No doubt. Boo. Statcast tells the same story. I mean, he got to his spot as quickly as you can possibly get there. And he had to in order to have a chance at that diving play. Just special. Number 38 batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. field one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] swing and a line drive. That’s a base hit into right field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Here’s the center fielder. Reached on an infield single his first time. Swung on. Belted. Paradus going back. That’s not coming back. his second home run of the series. And they add to the lead. It’s 7 nothing. Already playing with the lead and now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Calls it in. Two away. Now batting left fielder Taylor Ward. And next for the Angels, Taylor Ward. He’s already homerred here in this one. [Applause] swing and a miss at strike one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. And it’s fouled away. Here’s a high chopper. tosses to first. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now 7 nothing. Back after this on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the fifth. At the plate is the Astros catcher Yiner Diaz. Kikuchi back to work and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. And that’s down and away. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. It’s tough after falling behind a hitter. Two balls and no strikes, but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter. But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction. Meyers stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Angel, let’s go. Ball inside. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. The next pitch misses and that’s ball three. Come on, Angels. Let’s go. clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle and ball four, two aboard. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Zack Cole up next for the Astros. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Here’s an opportunity. If you’re going to get back in this game, you have to take advantage of this situation. This feels like their chance. Grounder might be two offbalance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. So, up next, Ramono Ras. He’s 0 for one. [Applause] Line drive and it stays fair. One run across coming home to the plate. Save. It’s 7 to2 now. No waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. So the batting order turns over. Jose Altuve will hit next. There’s the strike on one. [Music] 01 now. [Applause] All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. [Applause] Caught him looking for the K. Well, you could tell he wasn’t expecting that ball to break back in on him. He may have been looking for something away, maybe something soft, but that slider on the inside corner absolutely froze him. Yeah, the batter now, Isak Paredus. Goal for two in this one. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. And that’s ball one. Ori at second with two down. [Applause] Fly ball center field. PZA sizes this one up, makes the grab, and that is that. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now a 72 ball game. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the DH for the Angels. Yoan Mona hitter Yawan Mona 29 years old he’s usually a third baseman but today he’s the designated hitter. Brown ball to the right side. Steps on first for the out. Now batting right fielder Joe Adele. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Joe Adele. Come on. Let’s go. Let’s down the middle for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Pretty rare location right there. Right down the middle. This guy paints the edges. I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. And that gets down into the gap around first. Digging for two and he’s got his second double of the game. Two hits for him in this one. Both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. One out, runner at second. And now it’s switch hitting third baseman Luis Rangifo. Well struck right field. A dive and he can’t hold it in. Coming home. He’ll score easily. The relay. The tag out. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down to third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Rober Valdez won’t go any further. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now pitching for the new pitcher in the game, AJ Blue Ball. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Two outs. Base is empty. Now it’s the second baseman, Christian Moore. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. [Applause] Next offering in there for a strike. And it’s one and one. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. A one-two count. And all he’s seen is fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. [Applause] swings through it for the K. Some high cheese for strike three. So, it’s one run on two base hits. No errors and no one left on. We’re through five. It’s the Angels eight and the Astros two. Back here at Angel Stadium. And here comes Carlos Kareah. Carlos you talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Pitch misses inside and it’s one and0. And because of that big power arm is able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Swing and a ball driven out to center. Ranging back and that one is going to go. He’ll touch them all and they’re chipping away. It’s 83. took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall. I thought for a second he brought it back out there, too. He gave it a great effort, but you know, those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. First pitch just misses. Now a screamer into the outfield. Lunges for it but can’t make the catch. Up next for the Astros, the designated hitter, Jesus Sanchez. had it first. Now here’s the Astros designated hitter, Jesus Sanchez. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Music] [Applause] Next offering misses down and away. [Applause] the 1-1 and a swinging to miss. One on, nobody out. A run in and we’re the top half of the sixth. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. [Applause] outside with a breaking ball. [Applause] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Well, he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does and you’re tied up [Applause] and ball four to a board. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. Very gritty. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Usay Kikuchi will depart and not a great performance but he leaves with a big lead new arm when we get back. Now pitching new pitcher now number 70 is averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season and that’s not where you want to be at all. So we’ll see how he does here. And stepping in for the Astros, Yiner Diaz. He is struck out and he is walked [Applause] and there’s a foul ball. Well, he gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. Next offering upstairs, action in the Angels bullpen. Connor Brogden getting ready to go. Dana also getting ready. Walker over at second. Sanchez at first with no outs. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Fouls it back with two strikes. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Flips for one. And it’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Jake Myers. And now here’s a speed threat. Outfielder Jake Meyers. [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Makes the catch and that’ll do it. Carlos Koreah with the key hit this inning. It’s now 83. Well, we go bottom six. And stepping in is the speedy Oswald PZA. Swinging a foul straight back. You know, these Angels digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. It’s been a real team effort already. Seven extra base hits. So that goes to show they’re getting contributions from top to bottom. Nobody’s doing that by themselves. Next offering is down low. And that’s outside. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. just not able to put the bat on the ball. Here’s the catcher. One for two. Let’s go. Come on. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Gets off a throw too late and the runner is safe and the misplay cost him. Well, looked like a pretty routine play. Just couldn’t get it to stick in the glove as he gets tagged with the error. Should have been two outs in the inning, but now they have to work around it and get two more. One down. And now the center fielder, he’s already homered in this game. One more. Let’s go. And first offering is fouled off. [Music] That’s a ball. I got one ball, one strike. just missed. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike now. One missed. [Music] Got him looking. That’s a strikeout. Just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Showell the next to hit takes outside. That one fouled off. [Music] Swings through that one for strike two. I think he was sitting off speed there upstairs [Applause] gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Two outs. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it on the ground right side. Altuve slings to first. That’s out number three. Angels strand one, but they lead at 83. And we’re back now. The left fielder, Zack Cole. Zack Cole fouled off left side. Here comes the 01. swing and a miss as he was out front. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Next pitch is outside. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. That one 95 to finish him off. Now batting third base. Here’s the third base Ramon Ras. That misses the zone and that is ball one. Bases empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. And that one fouled off. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. Fast ball is outside. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. That smash towards center. Stretches out and holds it in. Up next for the Astros. Second base. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Swanging a popup. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, nabs it, and that is that. Astros are down quietly. Can’t chip away at an 83 deficit. [Music] [Applause] Set for the last half of the seven. So in down for the Angels, Taylor Ward with this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. That one missing inside. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Stay hot up there. And that is downstairs. Two and one outside. [Applause] Ripped in the air left field and a touchdown for a base hit. and the leadoff man aboard. Oh, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Here is Yan Mona 0 for three in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Ward aboard here at first with nobody out. That one hammered way out of here. Mata knows it and they add a pair. It’s 103 and that shot makes their grip on the lead even tighter. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. Joe Adell the next to hit for the Angels [Applause] in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame here. The bottom of the seventh. Pitch misses and a count even one and one and that is out of play. [Applause] Next offering upstairs, he really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. [Applause] Swing and a ball popped in the air. Walker makes the grab. One away. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Now the third baseman Luis Rangifo and first off is fouled off on the ground right side. Altuve slings to first. Two out. Up next for the Angels. Second baseman, Christian. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the second baseman, Christian Moore. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. [Applause] Just missed. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. That one catches the corner for a strike. [Applause] That one misses and the count’s full [Music] and that is low for ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. PZA in the box now. No balls in a strike. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That one back and it hits the fence. Moore around third. He will score. He was all over that one. That pitch came off the bat really well into center field and he clearly put a nice swing on it. And anytime you can get one to drop in out there, you know, you stung it pretty good because it seems like center fielders these days to a man. These guys can run down just about everything hit their way. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. AJ Blue Ball won’t go any further tonight and he leaves a runner at third. So, we’ll see how the next pitcher deals with that when we get back. Now, pitching for Houston. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change, Hunter Brown. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. Runner at third, two gone. Here’s the Angels catcher. One for three. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. Plenty of offense in this one, Singy. I guess you’d say kind of what we expected though. Well, this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as lopsided as this. Um but yeah, you definitely expected to see some offense coming up. Two outs with a runner at third. [Applause] Next offering upstairs. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. [Music] And down on strikes he goes. They limit the damage here. So they get three runs on three hits including the home run. No errors and one left on. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Halos 11. Yeah, the Astros three. This one isn’t exactly close, Chris. Let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Were we on script? Never. All right, Singi. In Ballpark Entertainment, you got a favorite mascot race? Yeah, I love what they do in DC with the former presidents. Somebody always gets tackled. They always get hurt. I know. And it’s just crazy. Imagine running around in those big bulky suits and somebody’s always going to go down. Now Koreah up to hit. Do you remember when Tim Kirken ran in the sausage race in Milwaukee? No, I didn’t see that one. Yeah. Yeah, they use one of the kidsiz ones. You know, this isn’t exactly a mascot race, but I love what they do in Atlanta with the freeze and a foul ball. I wanted to race the freeze at one point. I don’t think my hamstrings could hold up for it now. I feel like 5 years ago you could have handled the freeze. It would have been fun and I would bait you into it and try and get you to train to race the freeze and it just never materialized. Yeah, I would I appreciate that that you had enough confidence in me that I could beat a guy who looks like he was going to the Olympic trials at some point or another. But yeah, it’s always a great thing to watch there at Truest Park. Would you have worn one of those bobsled outfits like the freeze wears? No, they would have been too a little too revealing for me at this age. I feel you. And it’s a one two3 inning. Nothing doing there for Houston. Still 11 to three. Back in Anaheim out of the bottom of the eighth. So in now for the Angels number 22. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. That one is upstairs in the air right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one away. Now batting first baseman Nolan. Now it’s the Angels lead off man Nolan Showwell. Brown measures 6’2 in. He features a fourseam fast ball, a sinker, a curve, a change up, and occasionally uses a cutter. That one misses and the count is one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Fights it off. He’ll see another. And that’s a strike out. Looking fast ball at the letters froze him for strike three. No, that’s not the best two strike fast ball I’ve seen, but certainly got away with the location there. You know, sometimes as a hitter when you’re down in the count, you’re so focused on a pitcher painting the black and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the hard of the plate, not expecting it, and it just kind of freezes you. Swinging a liner foul off to the right. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Foul ball. Well, two outs and a chance to put up a zero on the scoreboard here. And that’s not something that’s come easy for this staff in this one. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. Angels go quietly there, but still in command. It’s 113. Now pitching. Here comes the closer here in the ninth. Kenley Jans. And he’s coming in to pitch on four days rest right here. And that might not be a factor at all in terms of being rusty, but he should definitely be well rested. So now the Astros designated hitter, Jesus Sanchez. Jesus Sanchez. [Applause] And that misses. And that’s ball one. [Music] [Applause] just missed. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. [Applause] Here’s a 2-1. Just missed. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. [Applause] Jansen fires that one. Ripped but fouled. [Applause] Ground ball right side. It squirts through. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Now batting catcher Yiner Diaz. So next up for Houston, Yiner Diaz. Known for his rocket arm behind the plate. [Applause] Lifted to left center way back there. And that is gone. He’ll circle the bases. Home run number 20 on the year. It’s 115. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Here’s [Music] the center fielder Jake Meyers. [Applause] Top of the zone for a called strike. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] That one misses and now it’s even one and one. Nobody on, nobody out. A pair of runs across in the inning here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. That cutter right there had just enough movement on it to get the swing and miss. Wasn’t a great location by any means. That’s typically a spot that hitters can handle. So, I’d say he fooled him with just enough of that late action. [Applause] Cole in the box with one away as he takes ball one. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. [Applause] Oh, sorry. That’s a ball. [Applause] Hard ground ball base knock. So, a man aboard now with one away. Here’s the third baseman. Raone Rias. Rolled to short. Possible two ball. Glove flip for one. Ow. A double play to end it. A little sigh of relief for the pitcher there. Ending the ball game with a nice double play. You always love when you can get two for one, especially when it wraps up the ball game. Nice win for this team today. 115 your final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. Open.
