🔴LIVE 🔴Arizona Diamondbacks VS San Diego Padres /September 26/ Baseball Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
Downtown San Diego, an NL West matchup on the show. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres’s. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. All right, just about ready for baseball and our starting pitcher here today, Dylan Cece. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Heraldo Peromo leading things off and takes a strike. There’s the one. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. Catel Marte up to the plate. There’s the strike. Let’s turn. And there’s a ball. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a rollover something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Off the plate inside. And that’s ball two. Purdomo aboard here at first with nobody out. And that one is lifted in the air. Lays out and makes the play. Another amazing catch by Raone Lauraniano. I tell you what, this guy never ceases to amaze me out there. Whether it’s robbing a home run, tracking one down in the gap, or making a great diving catch like that one right there. This is Corbin Carroll. Come on, Dylan. Inside ball one. Here’s a fun fact on Corbin, and I I don’t know if everyone remembers their first jersey, but Carol certainly does. He used to rock an Ichiro Suzuki growing up. That’s in for a strike out there on the mound. He’s setting the tone early with the fast ball. 98 mph up on the scoreboard. And look out as that one ran in and got him. Batting fourth. Gabrielle Moreno getting ready to hit. Swinging a foul out of play. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Runners at first and second with one gone. Outside corner, there’s a strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Batty fifth catcher Adrien Del Castillo. Time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport, Gabrielle Moreno. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Adrien Del Castillo the next to hit takes ball one. [Music] There’s a swing and a drive and that one hops the wall. One run is in, another comes in to score. It’s two nothing. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now Bla1 Alexander. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Two outs. Jumps, but it’s off his glove. safe at first as they can’t make the play. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. That’s one of those you classify as just too hot to handle. Hit it on the screws and it couldn’t be fielded cleanly, but you can’t really blame the defense in that case. So, two outs with runners on the corners. So, next is the designated hitter for the Dbacks, Alec Thomas. [Applause] He’s given up a couple of runs, but the pitch count really not as high as you would think. might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches. Lifted in the air right field. Lauraniano trying to get there. Squeezes it and that’ll do it. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double and it’s two zip. You’re dialed into the show. back here in San Diego. Today’s starting pitcher number 56 and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Short hop liner. Handled it short. Peromo on to first. One up, one down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. And no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Ryan O’Harn. Well, he’s an important part of this lineup for sure. I mean, there’s no doubt about it. Boog, it’s somebody that they try to feed off of. He does a lot of things, you know, very well up there at the plate. He’s got a presence about him and, you know, he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. still finds a way to get off a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. Definitely not a comfortable play to make down there at third when it’s ripped at you like that. Pretty impressive stop though. He kind of stabbed at it, got up, completed the play. You know, some guys are just waving at that one as it goes by to the outfield. Two outs, space is empty. And now Jackson Merrill. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two down. Nobody on. That one lifted to left and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. The O2 breaking ball and that got him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately under the Mendoza line so far this month. Swings and blasts one deep to left center and it one hops the wall coming home. He’ll score easily. puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Sheets on it. Second with two down in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. [Applause] Man at second. And a swing and a miss. down on strikes. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the center fielder number 13. CE back to work and a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. [Applause] That’s too low. One and one. Joe McDonald, our umpire behind the dish. Yeah, Boo. Joey Mack. Sometimes a little tough to figure out. We may see some hitters and pitchers asking him where a pitch was here or there, but most of the time he keeps it reasonable. And the right hander deals in for a strike. It’s two and two. Singi wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff at the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be because it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly though. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Knight. And the batter now Jake McCarthy. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty. Outside low and a count even. One and one. And that one missing low. Last couple of pitches. Breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Man, that looked like a pretty good swing and I was waiting for it to get hammered somewhere. I mean, breaking ball, but he just somehow missed it. Timing looked solid and his balance was there. He wasn’t out on the front foot. Great pitch to hit, but just came up with nothing but air. So, tell you what, that’s not a good feeling at all. Purdomo takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. Two out. Space is empty. That one missed. Now three and 0. Catel Marte on deck for Arizona. There’s the strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. very top of the strike zone. Middle away. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. And that lands inside the party porch for a home run. Bottoms up. Home run number 20 on the year. It’s 3-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Base is empty with two away. Now up next for Arizona, Catel Marte in the first pitch misses for ball one. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the second. And another ball way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. And a slider in there for a strike. There’s the swing in a miss. Wow. Good luck catching up to that one. Smoked on the ground to second. On to first. They get the out on Marte and the inning is over. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. And this is now a 31 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. Ryan O’Harn. That one misses. And that is ball one. to the right side. The flip to the pitcher covering. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Batting seven right fielder Ramon Lauraniano. Here’s Raone Lauraniano singing when the year’s over. He’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. And that’s in there for strike one. And a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Good eye on that spot. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. Close but called a ball. Two and two. Got him looking for the strikeout. That was pretty nasty. Oh, nice job right there. He struck him out twice. The pitch before looked like it was strike three. Doesn’t get the call. Bears down. Throws another quality pitch for the strikeout. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. and misses inside. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with that one. Fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That misses the zone. And it’s two and two. Line drive and makes the play. And that’s out number three. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Diamondbacks three, and the Padres’s won. Back here at Petco Park. New inning getting started. And now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. He swings and fouls one off. Carol measures 5′ 10 in hitting third in the lineup. A former first round pick back in 2019. That’s a little bit low. Just missed with that back door breaking ball if he gets a swing and miss or called strike. 02 count. Instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. Next offering is down low. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That one the other way and that’s a base hit into left field. So a runner aboard to start the inning. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the playbook. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Gabrielle Moreno stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Cease over to first. Carol back in on a dive and that is out of play. You know these Dbacks doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already Oh, this one high and deep way back there. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Headed for the plate. He’ll score. That holds the runner at second base. Everything came together for him. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. runner in scoring position. No outs. Adrien Del Castillo the next to hit. He drove in two with a double his first time up. Just missed. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. activity in the bullpen. Number 72, the hard throwing righty is up and loosening. Matsui, the lefty, warming up as well. That one ripped out of here. That’ll fire up the dugout. Home run number five on the season. And they add on. It’s 6-1. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Dylan Cease won’t go any further and this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this pitching. So they turn things over to one of their young arms number 72. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It blaze Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Check swing and he went 0 and one. ball one there. Chris, you look at it. These are the spots where guys can come on, pitch well, instill some confidence in the manager, and all of a sudden they’re pitching higher leverage spots of the postseason. Well, in this final month, I mean, this is an audition period for the callups, but it’s also for that marginal reliever that was on the roster throughout the season to maybe step up and be on that playoff roster. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Thomas batting for the second time and that’s strike one. Still only one out here in the inning. Next offering upstairs, just missed he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Swing and a miss. out number two. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Two down, base is empty. And now the center fielder struck out looking his first time. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. And that one sliced, fouled. Two outs. Now one out to right. Lauraniano on the move. Makes the grab and that is that. But they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. And this is now a 6-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Stepping in for San Diego. Freddy For me. For me. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. This one smoked out to left. McCarthy pulls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Padres, Luis Arise stands in. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. There’s a strike. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Swing and a miss. And it’s nothing in two. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Handles, throws to first. Two up, two down, Manny Machado. Two outs, space is empty. Here comes Manny Machado. Grounded out his first time. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Swinging a high-fly ball out towards right field. Carol hauls it in to end the inning. Offense held in check there. On to inning number four. It’s the Diamondback six and the Padres’s won. Back here in San Diego, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Jake McCarthy. Let’s go. Hit on the ground to short. It’s through for a hit. So now back to the top of the order. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. who just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. So, the lineup flips over. Now, it’s the shortstop. Heraldo Peromo right through there for a strike. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. That one hit to right and it’s caught for the out. Now batting second baseel Marte. Here’s Catel Marte. Bowl for two in this one. Come on, turn the double pickoff move to first and he’s back in on a dive in the air left field down the line and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. Here goes the runner. And there’s a foul ball. This one in the dirt. Safe at second. And now a man into scoring position. Well, that right there erases the chance at the inning ending double play. So, good job on the bases to move up on the wild pitch. Changes the outlook of the inning in a pretty big way. Man at second. That one missed. Let’s go. Gets a piece and stays alive. And now it’s three and two. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. You know, varying speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement. And as you see right there, it really wasn’t a great location, but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance, and that’s all you got to do sometimes. Carol stands in with two away as he takes a ball and he can’t come up with it. Gets off a throw that ends the frame. So, one hit is all they get. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Diamondback six and the Padres’s won. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill, taking it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. That one’s in there. Go and one. Foul ball. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. The O2 and that skips in the dirt. Rips one to left. That’s a base hit. And they have their first base runner since the first inning. All right, let’s go. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s doubled his first time and that one a little below the knees. Ball one. Merrill gets his lead at first with nobody out. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. McCarthy settles under it. One down. Always love visiting Petco Park. Gorgeous place to catch a game. And when they built it, they did such a great job of making that old Western Metal Supply Company building a piece of the stadium. It’s really done wonderful things for downtown San Diego. And here is Xander Bogart’s three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. just missed. Bogart’s who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter. A change up missing and it’s two and0. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. That’s in there. And it’s two and one, man. At first, one away. [Music] Struck him out looking. I can’t argue with that one. And clearly he was looking for something else. Anything but the breaking ball. It’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it and kind of a gift in a two- strike count. But sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap. Oh, the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. And ball one. The Dbacks leading by five. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Now a screamer into the outfield. Nabs it and that is that. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. We played four. It’s the Diamondback six and the Padres’s won. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Nick Pavetta and he has some nasty breaking stuff. Gabrielle Moreno stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Gabriel Moreno and first offering is fouled off. Well, these Diamondbacks putting together some really good at bats in this game. And there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. [Applause] Swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt. Fine. Down to first with it. Gets him. One away on a drop third strike. I gota think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. Del Castillo in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Next offering upstairs [Music] and another ball. No strike. And now three and one. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Fast ball for a strike. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Well, he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does. And you’re tied up. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. waves at the bender for the strike out. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Alexander in the box again. Takes the strike. That’s in there. 0 and two now. And that’s in the dirt. That’s towards center. Merryill moving under this one. Brings it in. And that is that. Back here at Petco Park, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Lauraniano comes up to hit. Loriano and a foul ball. You know, these Padres’s just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. Just one extra base hit for them. So they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs and that’s way high. Two and one headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. And a swing and a miss at the slider in the dirt. Gets to it onto first. Got him one away on the strikeout. You know, Boo, you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement, but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement, and that’s what we saw right there. Good drop on the break and got him to swing over the top. Jake Croninworth will hit next. Ball one low. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. Late swing fouled to the left. ball to strike. The pitch inside corner and that’s called a strike. He’s been very consistent with his command out there on the mound. Consistently throwing at the knees. Pretty impressive when a guy can repeat his delivery like this. That misses the zone and the count’s even at two. Really good take, especially with two strikes and it’s filled up. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Good job to fight that one off. Stays alive. got him looking. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. He was hoping he’d get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards K. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. That one in there across the letters comes up empty. That’s strike two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. Two down. Nobody on. Hard ground ball. Base knock. Now batting. So digging in Luis Az. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. [Music] in the air left field down the line. It gets down a base hit and out to a board. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Machado stands in now and watches strike one. Ball one in the dirt. Blocked Firmine over at second. Arise on it first with two down and that’s outside. Two and one. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. swinging a ground ball and that’s just foul. [Music] Caught him looking for the K. Padres’s leave a pair. They trail it 6-1. Top of the sixth inning. And now the DH Alec Thomas Hoveta goes 6’5 in 210 lbs and he was born in Canada. Movement in the bullpen. Jeremiah Estrada, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff is getting it fired up. Number 76, a hardthrowing right-hander up as well. The 10 and it’s fouled away. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. [Applause] Swings through it and that’s a strike out. You usually are going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Number 13 batting with one down. Takes the strike. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Here’s the swing and a line drive and a base hit to right field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Jake McCarthy stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Just missed. The one fought off foul. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. That’s back there. That’s not coming back. He shoots one out to right. his fourth home run of the season. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 8-1. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Next to hit for Arizona, Heraldo Peromo. That one’s upstairs. All one. [Music] Next pitch inside. Now 2 and 0. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound. Getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. Yeah, that’s fouled off. swung on, belted, and no one can get there. Makes the turn and heads for second. Pulls in with a double. Third hit for him today. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. So, a man aboard, an outstanding hitter in Catel Marte, 0 for three in this one. First pitch misses. and he takes a strike. One out and a runner at second and we’re the top half of the sixth. [Music] Ball two in the dirt. [Music] Swings and miss has struck him out. Now it’s the right fielder Corbin Carroll singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat, he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. And that one fouled off. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boog, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite career. A swing and a miss. That retires the side and that’ll do it. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now 8 to one. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the sixth inning. So digging in now for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Out to center and makes the grab and a quick out number one. Now batting leftielder Gavin Sheets digs in now. He’s been a great free agent side. And first offering is fouled off. Yeah. And I figured you would get caut into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Drilled out towards left center field. That one carrying and it hits the fence in safely with a double. His second of the day. All over that one right there. So close to blasting that one out of here the other way, but that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. Let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Bit second with one away. And here comes Xander Bogarts swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. And down on strikes he goes. Make it seven strikeouts for him. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. And that was his third strike out. And this one looking obviously. So he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. Breaking ball inside and it’s one and0. Man on second. Two down. And that’s down and away out towards right center. That’s well struck. And it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Runner comes in from second to score and they cut the lead. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. [Applause] Now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Number 56 gives way. Well, Boog, he’s leaving this one in line for that first career win at the major league level. Now, let’s see if the bullpin can hold this lead. Now on the mount for the Diamondbacks, number 55. This southpaw has been really good against left-handed hitters. So, two down and now it’s going to be Raone Lauraniano in there at the knees and that is strike Come on. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. Come on. In the air out towards right center on the move to the gap and that ends the inning. One run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left on. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks eight and the Padres’s two. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Jeremiah Estrada. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Gabrielle Moreno now at the plate. right through there for a strike. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. Next offering in there for a strike. And that’s strike two. Quickly in an 02 hole. So, you’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. Fights it off. You’ll see another. That one just misses and the count one and two. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. And that’s the first out. Boo. He was shopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made him look, that was just nasty. Adrien. Now at the plate, Adrien Del Castillo. He’s already homerred in this game. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. One ball, one strike. Padres. The 1-1 is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. Come on. cut on and miss. Struck him out and there’s two down. Boo, if you can set up a good two strike splitter with a fast ball on the previous pitch, it’s going to be so tough to recognize and adjust your swing to get a piece of it. Clearly had him reaching for it right there. Two outs, space is empty. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Bla1 Alexander, one for three. Popped up. Croninworth settles under it and makes the catch. And that’s the third out. And the Diamondbacks down in order. They lead it 8-2. [Music] This one isn’t exactly close, Chris. Let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Are we on script? Never. All right, Singi, we’ve been in all the press boxes. You got best press box food. Uh, I say press box food because of the ice cream. We have Philadelphia. Shout out to our guy Frank. Yes. Uh, New York for me is pretty good. Yankees. Yeah. Solid. Yeah. Let’s go. As far as ballpark food, one of my favorite places is San Francisco. Garlic fries. Yo, garlic fries. And you got the lobster roll out there in the outfield if you want to make the walk all the way out there. It’s great though broadcasting a game with that zoo breath where you could just I mean absolutely levitate some people with your with your breath. But we got the crab fries in Philadelphia. Is that right? Yep. And then it’s been a long time for me. Boogs Barbecue at Oral Park. I knew you’d go there. That’s right. Yeah. Anyway, you can work in your name, huh? That’s right. Here’s a 2-2. And Jake has entered the K zone. That left-handed batter facing a left-handed pitcher that’s got some sink like that at the end. It’s just the bottom falls out of it when it looks like it’s going to be a pretty good pitch in that location that everyone says lefties love. That one fouled off. 01 now. The Diamondbacks up big in this one here in the bottom of the seventh. And they’ll do it again. One, two now. Next offering misses. Down and away. Two balls, two strikes. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And that turns the lineup over. Next for the Padres’s, Luis Arise. That one not close. And that’s ball one. Firm mean the base runner at first with one out. Padres. And there’s a ball. Do it. Here’s a swing and a drive left field. And he knew it. So he goes the opposite way with that one. His ninth homer of the year. And they’re chipping away. It’s 84. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. [Applause] Got to keep that front shoulder closed and your body square to the plate, especially when you’re facing a left-hander. He did all those things until the very last moment where that hip just popped. Hands came through. Nice little lag to it. Carried out nicely. And now it’s Manny Machado 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Little bit low. And that is ball one. that finds the mark on the inside corner outside just missed. And that’s outside ball four. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. One down. Jackson Merrill getting ready to hit. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Diego, they say it went 01. Ground ball left side could be two onto second. They get one double play and that’ll do it for the inning. Two across on this San Diego homer. It’s now 84. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Number 76. He’s been so good against lefties. Alec Thomas now 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. Ground ball right side and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting number 13 And now the center fielder San Diego in the air right field puts it away for the out. Now that in left fielder Jake McCarthy swing hanging and a miss. Strike one. Fouled off left side. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing for Arizona, but they still lead it by a count of eight to four. Bottom of the eighth. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s. Gavin Sheets. The Padres’s in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. Need a good at bat out of him right here. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. He swings and fouls one off on the ground to third. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Good armside run and sink on that pitch right there. Got inside on him and got him to bounce into that out. Bogarts. It’s Ander Bogarts now. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. That’s inside. And that’s ball one. And that is out of play. The Padres’s down by four near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Line drive to short and caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. O’Harn stands in here, takes ball one low on the ground right side and it kicks off the bag and that keeps the inning alive. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. Now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Number 55 will depart. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now pitching for a new arm into the game, the righty John Curtis coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. man at first. Raone Lauriano the next up for the Padres’s. A pair of strikeouts and he’s flyed to center. That one ripped [Applause] and that’s going to bang against the wall coming home. He will score. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. [Applause] Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth swings through that one out in front that time. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Runner at second. Two down and Lauraniano in scoring position. The other way and a base hit. Brown’s third headed for the plate. He’s safe and now just a two-run deficit. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Digging in. Freddy Fine gets the outside corner with that one. The tying run at the plate inside just missed. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] You got this. That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Croninworth leads off first with two down to the inning. That one misses and that’s ball three. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it. So now two on and two outs. Walks out of the bullpin can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. First and second, two outs. Now the DH for the Padres’s. Luis Az. He’s already homered here in this one. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. Swings and misses. 0 and two. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there. Ah, that’s strike three and the third out. So, we take a break. So, two runs, three hits, no errors, but two are left stranded through eight full. It’s the Diamondbacks eight and the Padres’s six. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Adrien Morah. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Back to the top of the order now. Peraldo Purdomo digs in now and it may be a long shot but a triple here will give him the cycle and first offering is fouled off. Morahon 26 years old and he was born in Cuba way inside. [Music] [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. line drive caught. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Catel Marte stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that misses off the outside edge. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. [Music] Next offering misses and the count is 2 and 0. And another ball. And that’s ball four. Tried another slider, but it missed the plate. You know, I think he’s okay with that outcome. It wasn’t an intentional walk, but he wasn’t exactly trying to attack the zone either. Man at first with one gone. Corbin Carroll the next to hit. misses again. Five in a row. [Music] That missed by a lot. Two and 0. [Music] Line drive and foul ball. Still two and two after the foul ball. slides but he can’t come up with it. Marte around second and that’s a double. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. They really turned on that one and as it hooked down the line, it was hard to tell if it would stay fair, but he just barely sneaked in there. So, two in scoring position with one out. Moreno will hit next. And that one hit 97 on the gun. If you’re the Padres’s, this has to stay a two-run game. And the one one down, runners at second and third. Cut on and lifted in the air. Sheets brings it in. Runner tags from third. He’s in to score on the sack fly and they take a threerun lead. In that situation, you’re looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air. Worst case scenario, a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Foul ball there. Two outs. Just off the inside edge. And that’s outside. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. and ball four two aboard. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. First and second, two outs. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That one way outside going to count one and two. And the slider just misses. Oh, two strikes. And that’s downstairs and outside. [Music] [Applause] Foul ball and it remains a full count. Battling here as he fouls it away. And with two outs and the count full, the runners will be on the move. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, this is their chance to break it open. If they don’t end up winning this ball game, they’re going to look back at this opportunity right here and have some regret. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Adrien departs and he leaves with the bases loaded. So, he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Wandy Peralta takes over on the mound. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So bases all loaded up. Thomas now at the plate. [Applause] That one well upstairs. Ball one. Oh, he’s so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations. If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open. Just off the inside edge. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here on the ground out to short. They get the force and that is that. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Dbacks nine and the Padres’s six. Back now and on the mound the closer number 27. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Manny Machado up to the plate. Padres, Manny Machado in the dirt. Ball one. That one down the line and it goes just foul. out towards left center. Sizing this one up. And there’s one down. Now batting center fielder. So digging in now for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Strike one. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. And a foul ball. Foul ball. Still 0 and two. One down, base is empty. Swing and a chopper out to short. Peromo on to first and they’re down to their last out. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s. Gavin Sheets. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Ripped to short. Throw to first. Ball game. And the Diamondbacks slug their way to a win in this one. Number 56 with his first major league win. Yeah, nicely done. And I’m sure he’ll feel very good about that and get the ball for his trophy case as he should. A start he won’t ever forget. 96 the final in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shami saying so long.
