Saddiq Bey on joining Pelicans, health | Pelicans Training Camp 2025
Uh, first I’m just grateful to God to be able to, you know, just do this training camp that we been doing the past few days. Like, you know, it’s been over a year since I’ve been able to have a full practice. So, being able to have do two days, I just give all credit to God. And as far as the team, I I’m just excited to be able to play with these guys. It’s a lot of talent, a lot of poise, a lot of IQ amongst the entire roster, man. So, just being able to play alongside of them, um, I’m just excited for the season. And just how’s the body feeling right now getting out there and really running full contact? It’s good, man. It’s good. Um, you know, it’s good like just getting back into that that rhythm, the physicality, the just everything, intensity, having my body get adjusted, but you know, I give a lot of credit to everyone who did my rehab, my strength coach, and all that cuz um, you know, I was ready. So, good. S, how much are you itching to play in that first game? Just to test it out, get back in the flow of things cuz it’s been so long. Yeah. Yeah. I pray to God every day just the opportunities to be, you know, be ready. So, um, I can’t wait. I don’t know how the game, you know, is going to go, but I know I’m leave it all out there. Do you feel like you’re even maybe stronger, more physically fit, ready for it, say, than pre-injury? Yeah, for sure. I would say uh that was the goal going into the rehab to be better than before. So, I’m I’m confident in that. Obviously, I haven’t played a game. The game is different, but I’m going to be so I think excited and adrenaline is going to be pumping a lot. I’ll be ready. Even co uh coach Green were over here earlier talking about how intense things have been in practice. Is that something that you’ve noticed from so far as we train? Yeah, first day was intense. The the two days intense. Um every every you know workout that we had has been intense, man. It’s just competitive and it shows the the character of these guys. What stood out to you about maybe a new teammate of yours that you didn’t know previously from one of these practices? the rookies that coming in, they really uh trying to buy into, you know, what the team, you know, you know, wants to do and listen to the vets and, you know, they’re putting their eagles aside and and really learning and and trying to be a part of something special, man. So, um, you know, I’m proud of them. Getting to see him up close, you know, what really makes Herb special as a defensive player. Great. He has great lengths, great IQ, and I think to be a great defensive player, you have to have kind of like you have to have an instinct, right? like he could have the measurements, but certain defenders might not, you know, have the measurements. He has the instinct and and the measurements that go along and like the heart. So, he wants to play defense every day, every possession. I think that’s what makes him great. From last year to this year, what do you what are your thoughts on Jordan Pool as a teammate, leader, everything? Great, man. He’s uh you know, he cares about the game, cares about winning, wants to do the right thing, wants to set the floor, and uh you know, I’ve seen it, like I said, I watched all 82 games on the bench last year. um seeing his development over time and then seeing him in a kind of different role here. Um you know, so it’s it’s been good to see how he’s been adapting. So I can’t wait to see it in the game. Does it feel like he’s grown since that first game last year to Yeah, for sure. Absolutely. Um you know, that was kind of his first year being on the one like being a full-time point guard. Um so, you know, I think he learned a lot from that experience. People have told us that JP’s been really vocal here, even though he’s one of the new guys. Was he as vocal, say, on that Washington team? Yeah, he he’s he’s always been one of those. Yeah, he’s always been for sure. Have you uh planned out or mapped out how you’re going to spend 20 hours on a on a flight yet? No, probably um I download a lot of lot of movies, do some uh maybe nightquil, melatonin or something. 20 hours is crazy. I longest fight in my life. So, we’ll see. Are you excited for that opportunity though to you know the chance to really be around your team? Oh, yeah. Yeah. We, you know, we’ve been building a good rapport throughout the summer. Uh, it’s a great group of guys. We all around the same age like the majority of the team. So, I’m just I can’t wait. And Wood has always been big on like, you know, the versatile wings, being able to guard multiple positions. How much have y’all kind of talked about how you kind of fit into that? Yeah, exactly. You know, I think that’s strength that we have. We have the depth, size, and length. We want to be able to switch one through five like a lot of the good teams do. Uh, I feel like we have the the roster to do it. So, uh, I think we going to see a lot of it.
