So, here is the headline today. The Celtics just signed their final player to finalize their training camp roster. Now, the Celtics did have that open roster spot. They officially filled it today and we’ll tell you all about it. We go first to the report from uh Ian Ian Angelo. He says this, “The Celtics have signed Wendell Moore Jr. to an exhibit 10 contract to finish filling out their training camp roster. Across 36 games with the Pistons and Hornets last season, Moore averaged 4.2 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per games, 1.2 assists per game, a 47% field goal percentage, and a 34% three-point percentage.” So, you’re probably sitting there asking, Jace, why is this a sneak at signing? Well, it’s more because of his defense, his age, and really just him being a young defender can really help out with this team. Um, and especially looking in in their future in a lot of ways. So, let’s talk about what about Wendell Moore Jr. as a player and, uh, kind of his career up until now. So, he was a first round pick back in 2022. He was originally drafted by the Dallas Mavericks, although he spent more time with the, um, Minnesota Timberwolves and got traded before the season even started. So, a first round pick was 26 overall in that year. Um, he can play shooting guard, he can play small forward. The odds on for Windomore Jr. is that he probably will end up in Maine with the um main Celtics, but at the same time, I think again the defense is definitely there with him and the growth is is something to to watch out for. I do think he has a lot of prowess to, you know, maybe grow into a potential role for the Celtics later on in the season, which for the way the Eastern Conference looks and maybe some of the ways that the Celtics end up using their roster slots and trades and if Jason Tatum can officially come back. We heard on Stephen A. Smith a couple days ago that Tatum said, “I haven’t said that I’m not going to play this year.” So, we’re hoping that he can come back. There’s a lot to think about for this season. But going into more depth stats here for um for Windmore Jr., If we look at his time in his first two seasons, it’s with Minnesota. He averaged 1.4 points per game and then not even a point per game in 2023 2024. Only played in 25 games in that year before he then was with Detroit and um Charlotte this past season. 5.4 points per game in his most recent stint with the Charlotte Hornets, which got to that 4.2 average. But he’s just 24 years old. And I think that’s the biggest thing that I look at and say this was a good move for the Celtics cuz overall there is a lot to think about with the structure of your roster at that he also just turned 24 so not like he’s you know been 24 for a while now but the structure of the roster is very important and I think especially in this year in a type of year that the Celtics are going to have to lean on their depth probably a little more than maybe they would want to. you have to have some of these guys down in Maine or, you know, maybe even potentially cracking the roster that can be that type of wing defender. Now, with that being said, he’s got a kind of tough stretch to to actually get into this Celtics, you know, roster and actually get the the main roster, not just going to Maine. Ah, joking. But if you look at the starters here through the second strings and all the way to the third strings here, um, like I said, he’s a shooting guard, small forward type player. So, not going to see time at small forwards. The shooting guard is where you kind of look at him. Baylor Shyman is supposed to be that rotational pierce rotational piece as of now. Um, I think it really for window Jr. depends on the Anthony Simons decision. It’s it’s kind of tough because I’ I’ve said this in a lot of videos, but a lot of decisions hinge on whether or not Anthony Simons is still here come October 22nd or whatever it is that the Celtics open up their 202526 NBA season. And if he is here, then the odds are that, you know, trades are going to be made, signings aren’t going to be made, and that when no more Jr. will end up in May. If Anthony Simons is traded, there is a lot that could happen, and it can happen really quick. Now, the odds from there would be that Peyton Prager would probably play in that starting shooting guard role. But as of right now, Baylor Shyman and being a first round pick for the Celtics, they’re going to give him the rotational minutes and see if he can do it. But whether or not Shyman works out or not, that could be a easy input for Windom Moore Jr. to go in there because in his college career at Duke, he actually had a pretty good uh three-year career there. In fact, in his final season, he averaged the second most points on the entire Duke Blue Devils team, which you know college college basketball, you know that Duke is, you know, they’re a blueb blood legitimately. 13.4 points per game back in 2021 at 2022. 7.4 his freshman year, 9.7 his sophomore year at Duke. Lots of good things. His rebounding is actually a pretty decent part of his game as well. 4.9 throughout college. Um, and I look at these stats more just specifically because not that college is a true like, you know, look into their future, look into what type of NBA player they can be. We know that, you know, college and NBA are very different games, but you can at least see what the strengths are and exactly why this person might actually work out at the NBA level. So, speaking of that, I did go back and look at his scouting report, specifically on the defensive side, because in some ways, defense is going to be a little bit important, especially in the depth position for the Celtics. and he has a pretty good defensive analysis from his uh you know scouting days. Here’s what they said in him you know a couple years back when he was coming into the league said quote possessing a good combination of length and strength Moore showed a willingness to put body to put a body on opposing forwards and the ability to slide with many guards on the perimeter flashing intriguing versatility showing some hustle on the glass and denying denying the ball. Moore was very solid of the most part last season, but was not immune to lapses. And that’s kind of the big thing with you look at his scouting report and really the decision with him making into the NBA was he can have the ability to do the things that we’re talking about. You know, be that good wing defender, be able to kind of have that rebounding position to his game, sometimes get the points up there as well. But the lapses are kind of where he has struggled and it still kind of struggles into his NBA years as well because he’s had some good times and some good games throughout his, you know, very young tenure in the NBA. Um, and that’s kind of why I look more recently at the Hornets cuz he got to play 17 and a half minutes. And so that’s where I’m thinking, okay, that’s where majority are looking at. Ended up having a pretty good, I would say, stat line with it. You know, 3.2 rebounds per game, 5.4 four points per game in that tenure when he was actually playing decent minutes. Now, the thing is, I don’t think he’s going to get decent minutes with the Celtics, even if he does. So, that’s where the exhibit 10 contract really comes in. So, you’re probably asking what what does that mean? What’s an exhibit 10? All that stuff. Well, basically, it means it’s not guaranteed. So, Jack, Jack Simon of Fansighted said, quote, “His deal is almost certainly an exhibit 10 or nine contract, which would pave the way for him to join the main Celtics in the G-League next season.” End quote. So, basically, it’s an it’s an exhibition contract. It’s we’re going to give you a couple days or give you a week or two. Um, specifically here for training camp, show us what you got, and if we like you, we can potentially put you on the roster. If we like you, but not that much like you, we can put you on the main Celtics. Now, um, there is an option with it being an exhibit 10 contract that maybe another NBA team scoops him up. Maybe a team overseas decides they want him and will pay him more and maybe he decides to do that. So, there’s options around him playing with the Celtics, but um odds are, if I had to say right now, he is going to be probably one of the more critical pieces down in Maine or up in Maine, I should say. So, will I would expect to see him in a Boston Celtics jersey at some point this season, especially if that defense can stay at the I would say elite caliber that it can be at. Um he’s done really well in the G-League whenever he’s had that time. So, um, not to go too much into the G- League stats, but they were relatively impressive. And, um, Celtics are always an interesting team with G-League. You talk about JDavidson and his G-League stats. They don’t translate all the time to the NBA, but defense is one thing that I think can transfer pretty easily throughout the entirety of G-League, NBA, all that stuff because, just a personal opinion, but defense in the NBA has kind of gone down over the past 10 years. And so, if you can be an elite defender, that can really help out a team. um especially in the Celtics role where they’re they went from having top tier, you know, top players and depth is a big thing to now the top tier players are there, but depth is going to be more of a key point in this team. Um Windomore could be a surprising guy to come in there and really make a sneaky impact this season for the Celtics. So, let me know your thoughts today on the signing of Windomore Jr. Do you think he will crack the roster at all? Do you think he’ll be in Maine? Do you think we’ll see him in a Boston Boston Boston Boston Celtics jersey throughout this entire season? Want you to let me know down in the comments section. But for now, we appreciate you and we’ll see you next time here on Celtics Digest. Peace out, guys.
