🔴LIVE 🔴St louis Cardinals VS Chicago Cubs/September 26/ Envivo Tv /MLB THE SHOW 25
ML show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. First pitch coming your way next. Just a little bit away from first pitch and pitching here today, Mike Soka. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around, and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And another ball. Not showing great command so far in this at bat. 20 count. He’s got to execute here or this could get ugly. Late with the swing there. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Come on, Mike. Hard ground ball base knock. He was all over that one. Pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one. He pulled it hard into the outfield. And even when you keep it on the ground, it feels great when you hit a missile like that. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. Come on, Mike. Let’s do this. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] Here we go. Line drive caught. Batting third base. Here’s a Cardinals lineup now. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustment. So, if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Nice stop from his backside. Wanted second. Double play. What a twin killing to end the inning. Acrobatic play to get this one started. determined to get a good flip. And that flip leads to an inning ending double play. Back here at Wrigley Field and on the hill, Riley O’Brien. What do we need to know here? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. And now the first baseman, Michael Bush. There’s the strike. And a foul ball. One ball. Got him looking. That’s a strikeout. Nico her will come up to hit. Really strong hitting performance recently, hitting better than 350 this month. On to first. And here this afternoon, two quickly away in the bottom of the first. Time now for the Chicago Cubs lineup. And down towards the bottom of the lineup, hitting eighth here, Danby Swanson. And Boog, he’s a fun at bat to watch. I mean, definitely a threat whenever he’s got that bat in his hands, but for me, it’s it’s all about the mechanics. They’re so sound. And when he gets his foot down on time and starts his swing, so much consistency, that bat stays in the zone for a long time, and he squares up the baseball a lot. And there’s a foul ball. Two out. Base is empty. [Music] that misses and that is ball one. It’s through for a hit and that keeps the inning going. batting. So digging in, Moises by Asteros. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. And that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds Lamar. All right, here comes a pitch that misses the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. Swings through that. One ball. Ground ball up the middle and it finds its way through for a hit and out to a board. Batting fifth rightielder and now Seya Suzuki first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Highfly ball out into left center field. Nuke Bar moves under it. He’s got it. And that will end the inning. Cubs strand a couple scoreless after one. And welcome back to the ballpark now. Nolan Aronado Soka back to work. Fast for a strike. Sarroa the tall righty 250 lbs. a former first round pick back in 2015. Foul ball there. That one misses. Yeah, the count one and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Gets a piece and stays alive. line drive base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Just one of those at bats you almost hate to see come to an end. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. Now the left fielder Lars Nbar. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. Aronado gets his lead at first. Nobody out. And that one almost hit him. No score here in the second. This one in the dirt. And it’s through for a hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. First and second, no outs. Thomas Sajay next up for the Cardinals. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in the dirt but kept close and an excellent job keeping it right there. sit him down. Ripped on a line. Makes the grab. And that is a big first out. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. There’s the strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Shaw sizing this one up. Has room and he makes the catch. [Applause] So, up next, Jordan Walker. It’s early, but these at bats can impact a game just as much as they do later. Here’s a chance to set the tone early for your team. Upstairs. Two on, two outs. That one catches the zone and the count one and one that clips a corner. Well, this is a higher leverage spot and I love the way that he’s turned things around. He’s got two outs now ahead in this count. And he can pretty much dictate what’s going to happen next in terms of the pitch sequence. Got him swinging. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. here at Wrigley Field ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. Let’s go. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. [Music] that misses the zone and that’s ball one outside with a breaking ball. Well, I I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. Waves at the bender for the strike out. Chris, as we look back at the pitch sequence, he hasn’t seen that curveball at all. How tough is it to adjust to something like that with a bunch of break when you haven’t had a look at it yet? Yeah, I mean, you’re dialed up for something firm. You never want to take a called third strike as a fast ball. So, you’re going to be a little anxious before you recognize the pitch. And right there, clearly didn’t see what was coming. Swinging a foul straight back. One down. Base is empty. There’s a high chopper. Donovan fires over to first. Already two out here in the home half of inning number two. Batting eight, the short stop. Dansby Swanson stands in. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. Foul ball. and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them. The one-1. The one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. hitting wise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does and it’s filled up. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Music] Two outs. swings through that and it’s a strikeout and it’s a one two-3 inning. Cubs are down quietly. We’ll move to the third with no score on the north side of Chicago. John Shabi and Chris Singleton out of the third inning now up for St. Louis. Victor Scott lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Cro Armstrong pulls it in and there’s one away. Now batting second base Donovan. Back to the top of the lineup. Now it’s the second baseman Brendan Donovan. One for one with a single so far. Off the mark there. And it’s one and0. [Music] And the slider just misses. Top of the third, no score. The 20 is in for a strike. probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. One down, base is empty and it remains two and two. [Applause] And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Ivon Herrera digs in now. 0 for one so far. Ivon Herrera. That’s a little bit low. [Music] That one’s in there. And the count one and one. That’s excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game. If he can do that all game, should be a good outing for him. One ball hard hit left side. That’s out number three. Redbirds down quietly. Still no score. And we’re back set for the bottom of the third. So up now for Chicago, Matt Shaw. Matt Shaw clips the corner. That’s strike one. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. got him swinging. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. That was a wellexecuted slider away for the strikeout right there. First two pitches filled up the zone and got him ahead 02 in the count. And at that point, you can start expanding the zone as a pitcher. He made him chase and got the quick strike out. Michael Bush, the next Cub to hit, struck out looking his first time. That catches the corner. One out. Base is empty. Come on. Now one and one. [Applause] Line drive and this might be trouble around first. heading for two and he’ll pull in there with a stand up double all over that one right there. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Here’s Nicoer grounded out back to the pitcher his first time. dives but it kicks off his glove. He beats the throw and the defense comes away with nothing. First pitch swing in went up there with a plan to be aggressive. Fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all. He couldn’t pick it cleanly. It’s a very difficult play and that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. Ian Hap up to hit a single his first time. on the ground. Two ball. The underhand flip. There’s one. And that’s two. Got the batter to hit it exactly where he wanted that textbook 643 double play. Gets out of the jam and back in the dugout. Back here at the friendly confines. And here’s the first baseman, Alec Burlson. Hit on the ground to short. Swanson zips it across. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. So, now it’s Dolan Aronado and he’s already singled in this game. That’s in there. Strike one. Generally, second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Slides, but he can’t come up with it. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And the batter now Lars Nbar a little bit high and that’s ball one. Aronado leads off first with one away. lace to right center base hit and they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single. Everything came together for him. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. The ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Runners at the corners here. One away. Digging in. Thomas Sajayzi. He’s 0 for one. That hits the dirt. Ball one. Got the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boo. And that is out of play. Runner on the move. Swing and a miss. Safe at second. And that was not close. You know what? I like the aggressiveness right there. It looks like it’s going to be tough to score in this one. Really good pitching so far. So, why not try to put some pressure on them and see if you can steal the bag, get in the scoring position. One down, runners at second and third. Got him. Huge strike out there. Oh, that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead. You had the infield back. All you’ve got to do is just put the ball in play on the ground and you drive across a run. That’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter. Now, still have a chance, but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs. And here’s the catcher, Pedro Pahes. Fried out his first time. misses off the inside. Ball one right through there for a strike. Fourth inning underway. No score. Here we go. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. Just misses there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field squeezes it and that’s the third out. So the Cards strand a couple and we are still scoreless. Back here at Wrigley Field, bottom four. And now the DH Moises Vestos. [Music] First pitch just misses. [Applause] Rip to short. Go go go go go gets it to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. The batting right and now the right fielder Sea Suzuki fly to left his first time. Well, here’s a fun fact for you, Boo. Suzuki is the first Japanese-born player to homer in three consecutive plate appearances in the majors. Feel free to use that note in your next Cubs broadcast, buddy. Rip towards third Aronado to first in time. Two up, two down. Now batting catcher Carson Kelly. So two down now. And here is Carson Kelly. He was a strikeout victim his first time. And a curve misses outside. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering is fouled back. And it is two to one. There’s the strike. Pitch misses there. Three and two now. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing happening there for the Cubs. And we’re still knotted at zero. We go to the top of the fifth. And here is Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker. [Music] Soka back to work. That one clips the outside corner. It’s 0 and one. You know, these cards looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on, but it just hasn’t happened for them yet. They’ve had their chances with runners in scoring position, but nobody’s been able to deliver a big hit in those situations. On the ground to third, slides for the stop, fires to first, and that’s a great play for the out. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. Footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there, and of course, the most important part was getting the out. And stepping in is the speedy Victor Scott. Hit hard on the ground to shore in time to BCH and a couple of quick outs. And you got to give some credit to the other side as well. They’ve been able to get out of a few tough jams, but frustration is mounting for this offense, no doubt. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man Brendan Donovan. First pitch and he just misses. [Music] Swing and a ground ball up the middle. Tosses to first. St. Louis goes down in order. One, two, three go to Cardinals. Halfway through this one. Still no score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the center fielder, Pete Crow Armstrong. Center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong just missed. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Sunonny Gray, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Fernandez also throwing. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. Oh, look at the stop, the throw, and they get the out. Go. Come on. Now batting the shortstop, Dansby Swanson. And here comes Dansby Swanson. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Chicago, swing and a tapper. And Swanson is set down. Up next for the Cubs. Third base match manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Riley O’Brien won’t go any further and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this Sunny Gray comes on now. Still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. And up next for Chicago, Matt Shaw. His first at bat was a strikeout. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that Oh, now this one’s high. And deep way back there on its way gone. His 14th of the year. Just like that, they move in front. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. At bat after at bat, he’s that confident. Welcome to the game. First pitch out of the bullpen, a tough one. And you know, he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike. can on the other side as a hitter. It’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly. It’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him, but now he’s got to find a way to reset. BCH stands in now and watches strike one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Two down. Doon. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. What about him playing another position on defense? One that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to Oh, this pitch rides in too far. That got him. Two outs, runner at first. So, here’s her now. One for two. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Outside low and that is ball one. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Bush the runner at first with two gone. Swing and a miss. Sunny Gray with the strikeout. Cubs get one on the solo shot. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. on the north side of Chicago. John Chambi and Chris Singleton all set for the start of the inning. Now the number two hitter Ivon Herrera slider clips the corner. Strike two. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone. Caught him looking for the K. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. [Applause] And now the first baseman, Alec Burlson. That one is absolutely belted. And that should be extra bases. And now the tying run is into scoring position. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Here’s Nolan Aronado. He’s two for two. And the first offering is not close with the go-ahead run at the plate. And we’re the top half of the six. And that one is inside. And you got to wonder with first base open, one out, is he going to get a pitch to hit? Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Javier Assad preparing to come on if needed. Pomerance, a lefthander, also throwing, man at second, and that misses. And now 3 and 0. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. And ball four to a board. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pad. Mike Sroka will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Caleb Fieldbar on the pitch here. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Lars Nbar definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. swing and a miss and it’s nothing at two. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Nice grab. Wide throw and it gets away. throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Well, every double play turn starts with getting one. And even though these players work on these plays during batting practice over and over again, sometimes at game speed, you can still mess it up. Could have been two outs. Instead, they get nothing. So, two in scoring position with one out. And up next for St. Lewis Thomas Sajay in for a strike 0 and one swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Second and third one away. stays alive. [Applause] Two on, one out. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals. 0 for two in this one. And that one fouled off. Two outs, two in scoring position. And a swinging a miss. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] That one almost got him. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. Two on, two outs. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. One runs in now. A long throw home, but it’s offline. He will score and they take a two-run lead. Well, that was an important at bat in this game. So, a great job there stepping up to the challenge. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. So two down. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Hot shot to third on to her and the inning is over. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. Heart of the order 345 coming up. It’s the Cardinals three and the Cubs one. Here at Wrigley Field, John Shabi with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Ian Hap. And that’s in for a strike. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. Go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. Fouled off. He was late. Here’s the O2. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. One ball. [Applause] Swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. One out. Moises by Asteros. The next Cub to hit. Moises. [Music] Ball one. No strikes. The Cardinals up by two here in the bottom of the sixth. Next offering is in for a strike. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. And next for the Cubs, Seiya Suzuki. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back there and it’s into the bleachers. Out of here. A solo shot. Home run number 30 on the year. It’s 3-2. Here we go. [Applause] For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. Base is empty with two away. Now the Cubs catcher Carson Kelly who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] Let’s go. [Music] Swinging a miss as he was late. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. And that one is lifted in the air. Walker gets under it, brings it in, and that is the third out of the inning. But the Cubs do get one back on the solo blast. It’s now a 32 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball, and it’s on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Taylor Rogers. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Taylor Rogers. Well, one-run game. And now the center fielder, Victor Scott. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Just an outstanding play going up the middle right there. And the exchange to get the throw off to first just shows you why he’s one of the best shorts stops around. So smooth yet so quick at the same time. And any slower. And those wheels burning down the first baseline are going to turn that into an infield hit. And now it’s going to be Brendan Donovan. This one could be trouble around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. One out, runner at second. Next to hit, Ivon Herrera. 0 for three in this one. Right through there for a strike. One out and a runner at second. Chicago. That’s a strike and it’s 0 and two. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. [Applause] Ripped to third, whips it across. Two away. Now that first base, Alec Burles. And now Alec Burlson. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Runner at second. Two down here in the top half of inning number seven. And that’s downstairs. And now it’s even one and one. out to short. Swanson throws to first and that will end the inning. So, one left for the Cardinals, but they still lead at 3-2. [Music] Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Jojo Romero. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Pete Crow Armstrong getting ready to hit. He’s grounded out a couple of times. had a big swing and a miss. Oh, and two now as he swings through it. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. And that’s outside. One and two to count. That’s down and in. Looking to get the tying run on base. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this. I mean, you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Swanson digs in. Fouled off down the right side. and that’s in the dirt. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. This one popped up. Donovan, are you kidding me? Puts it away for the owl. Now batting third base Matt. Matt Shaw now at the plate. He’s already homered here in this one. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Boo, this guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it. They make moves on the base paths. Right through there. Got him. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing doing here this half. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Cardinals three and the Cubs two. Now pitching. Welcome back. a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Javier Assad. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Well, one-run game comes in to take his cuts. Clips the corner. That’s strike one. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Cro Armstrong pulls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Cardinals leftielder Lars. Here’s the left fielder Lars Nbar. Three for three with three singles. All right, Chicago Assad 61 righty 27 years old and he’s a native of Mexico. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Andrew Kitridge up and throwing for manager Craig Council. Pomerance getting cranked up as well. And another ball. ball inside and there’s ball four. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Man at first now up for St. Louis. Thomas Sajay-Z shorts stop takes a ball. Can’t find it here. That’s six straight balls. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Run around to go. That one fouled off. Nbar at first. One gone. Strike him out on the ground to third. Shaw to her at second for one. On to Bush. It’s a double play. Three up, three down that time. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Cardinals three and the Cubs two. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Kyle Ley. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So, back to the top of the order. Here’s the Cubs leadoff man, Michael Bush. Michael Bush. Just off the inside edge. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. John King up and loosening in the pen. [Applause] And that’s off the inside edge. Ball two. Fought off. Foul. [Music] That’s a little high. And now three in one. Nico her in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Fouls one away and now three and two. [Applause] [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Some high cheese for strike three. Pretty big strikeout right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. And fouled off. Here comes the 01. That’s a strike thanks to the sweeper holding on to a one-run lead here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Check swing. Now we’ll look down to first. No swing. Just held it back there. [Applause] That one not close and it’s two and two [Applause] out to short to Jay-Z. Tosses to first and that quickly two away. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Ian Hath. One for three. Fast ball in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Looks like he sacrificed a pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing. Some good hitters will do that. Two outs. Half lays off. [Applause] This one driven deep way back there and it’s gone. We are tied and we are starting over. It’s 33. [Applause] Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. And next is the designated hitter, Moises Bisteros. And that’s off the outside edge. And it’s one and0. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game right through there for a strike. Next offering upstairs. Got him looking as the fast ball runs back over the inside corner. Just one hit in the inning, but it was a big one right here as it ties the ball game. We’re tied now at three a piece. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. New inning getting started now. Here is Pedro Pah. Assad back to work. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Movement in the bullpen. Daniel Palencia up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Next offering is downstairs in the air right side. No trouble here. puts it away for the out and a quick out number one. Now that right fielder Jordan Walker Jordan Walker the next to hit. That’s a strike and it’s 0 and one. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Struck him out looking. Well, we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the bullpen is following suit. It’s just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott. [Applause] And he swings and misses and it’s nothing and one trying to keep good speed off the bases. Next pitch is outside. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. Bounced up the middle. Swanson safe at first and an infield single keeps the inning going. Well, he did all he could at short to try to make an amazing play and almost got it done, but good hustle down the line and that’s an earned infield hit. Go ahead run on base. Donovan digs in now. First pitch misses. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Two gone. The possible go-ahead run at first. Assad picks over. Scott back in on a dive. Two outs in there at the knees. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. So, no runs here on a base hit, no errors, and one left. 5, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. All tied up at three apiece. Bottom of the inning. So, up now for Chicago. Sea Suzuki. Smoked on the ground to second in plenty of time to first and they get the lead off man in the ninth. Fastball groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air. Maybe drive it into the gap. Carson Kelly the next Cub to hit. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. [Applause] first offering and it just misses. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. John King getting ready to go. [Music] And another ball. [Applause] this to third. Aronado to first in time and a couple of quick outs. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Now at the plate, Pete Crow Armstrong 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. that one in there across the letters. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That misses the zone and the count is one and one. [Music] Laser could be trouble. Now he’ll turn for second and it’s a two out double to put the winning run aboard. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Danby Swanson is going to get a chance to hit right through there for a strike. The winning run on second base just missed. [Applause] [Applause] And now two and one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. [Applause] That one misses and now three and one. Matt Shaw in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Winning run stands at second. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Kyle Ley is done and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Jorge Alcala. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. And now Matt Shaw, he’s already homered in this game. It’s a good spot to be in with runners on first and second. You know the pitcher is going to come after you. And that one fouled off. Last thing he wants to do is nibble, load up the bases, and then walk in the winning run or throw it to the back stop and bring in that winning run. That pitch clips the outside corner. That’s strike two. And that just misses. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. That one misses. The countdown two and two. Got him swinging for the K. That’s the third out. And we’ll play extra innings in this one. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. And we’re back. Now it’s the DH Ivon Herrera. Ivon Herrera. [Applause] That one’s in there. Going one up the middle. Whips it to first on the run on the money. Nice play. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third and now they have a chance to drive in the go-ahead run. It’s not a hit, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat, especially when you’re playing extra innings. Making a move at third, entering as the pinch runner, Jose Fairmine. Alec Burlson will hit next. So clutch, you could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. Sneaks through base hit in to score is the runner from third. It’s an RBI single and they’ve got the lead in extra innings. Rley gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. One down. Here’s Nolan Aronado. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes swinging a foul straight back. [Music] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Burlson the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Foul ball still 0 and two. Got him looking. Two away. So digging in Lars Nuke. No matter what you’re playing this kind of rival to take your game to another level. There’s a strike. One run across to the frame so far. And here in extra innings. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Two outs and ball one. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone. Got him. That K is his third of the game. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 43 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back now. And on the mound, the closer, John King. A chance at his first save of the year. John King. So digging in, Michael Bush. Man at second, nobody out. And Chris certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah. The way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. So the tying run at second. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. Coming home. Here comes the throw. It’s offline and he scores. Tie ball game 44. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. Here’s the second baseman, Nicoer, known for his late inning heroics. And that drops in for a strike. Yeah, I think part of that goes into it’s just so hard to come up with hits in today’s game. Starters don’t go deep and so hitters are seeing multiple pitchers every night and that makes it more challenging just to come up with a single. This one in the air right field. Walker hustling after it. Drops for a hit. He couldn’t run it down. Ball comes in and he slams on the brakes. Winning run stops at third on the double. Just a clutch at bat right there. Big time swing when this team really needed it. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. Winning run in scoring position now. So a clutch AB could end this one. And up next for Chicago in half. Golden opportunity right here. That one missed. hitters got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. And there’s a ball. He’s got a base open. So, the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Would love to see him get the green light even with the three 0 count right here. Let’s see if he can create some magic. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. John King done for the afternoon and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. New arm of the mound for the Cardinals, Ryan Fernandez. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. So, bases all loaded up. Moises by Easteros now at the plate. [Music] That one at 95 missed up top. One and0. And another ball. Pressures on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. The 20 is in for a strike. So, they’re all loaded up just off the outside edge. He’s going to have to find a way to get back in the zone. Good thing for the hitter. Should expect a strike right here knowing the pitcher can’t walk him. [Applause] Swung on. Belted. Scott makes his way towards it in there. That’ll do it. acrosses the winning run and the Cubs walk it off in extra innings. Well, you come to the ballpark hoping you’ll see something special that day. Whether you’re a player or a fan, a walk-off win, nobody forgets that. A memorable moment that’ll be logged in the backs of the minds of everybody that witnessed this here today. [Applause] Close [Applause] one here today and your final 54. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long. [Music]
