The Seattle Kraken got a win over the Edmonton Oilers, a 4-1 win in a game where we did see the the dynamic duo of McDavid and Dryidle on the ice for the Edmonton Oilers. And you know, this is preseason. Things are going to look different for both teams. And I think it’s a good barometer, a good measuring stick if you will, not only for some of the prospects or the new threats which we will talk about, but also for this team as a whole. And on today’s episode, I want to break down the win a little bit here, what we talked about. I want to break down the win, what we talked about, and then also talk about what changed, what was the difference between game two and game three. And then finally, who were some of the standouts for this Seattle Kraken team? We’ll get into that on today’s episode. You’ll also hear from Mattie Beneers. We’ll hear from Lane Lambert and uh Joey Dord had some really interesting things to say, including how proud he was of this team. So, we’re actually going to start with Joey. He was your net minder for the majority of the game. We also did see Nik Koko just like it like we saw before. uh with regard to the split net. But uh let’s hear what Joey had to say after this win. Outstanding. Honestly, um I thought we we checked them really well. Obviously, they had some of their, you know, biggest biggest uh biggest boys going. Um thought we checked really well. I I honestly like I was thinking about the D that played well and I I thought all six were excellent. Um especially the young kids getting out there against McDavid. Um it’s a tall task, you know, those those two McDavid and Dryidle. I thought all all six D were excellent tonight. Uh I could think of numerous big blocks. Um breaking up plays um you know, especially Rig and and um M having to play against those those two guys most of the night. They were Yeah, it was fun tonight. I got to make a couple plays. U as as I think people in Seattle know, I I like to play the puck, so it was fun to get the opportunity to do that tonight and make a couple nice plays. Um, honestly though, that’s that’s good spots from the guys when they’re ready for it and they’re getting back and they’re working working back to be an option for me, then I have all those options, right? And um, you know, Yanni was was ready for that one that I put on his backhand. Mattie kind of swung and and I hit him on the power play. Then we went down and scored and then I had um I had one up the middle to Mattie in the second period as well that he made a nice play on and we we kind of caught them. So, yeah. So, we’re going to hear from a few other people throughout this episode. As I mentioned, I want to talk about Beneers, who Lane Lambert felt had a really great game. We’ll also hear from Lane as well. But if we look at this game versus Edmonton, things get started with Jagger Fergus on the power play. I talked earlier in the week how Lane Lambert wanted to see more from Fergus, felt he was a victim of circumstance. That was the quote he gave after Sunday’s game because there was a lot of time spent on the penalty kill, but he was a power play guy tonight. Gets the first goal of the game. When we look at the um penalty minutes, much more disciplined game, only four penalty minutes. That’s the same that we saw for Edmonton. Faceoffs 57.8% in favor of Edmonton to 42.2% 2% an area for improvement. One of two on the power play for the Seattle Kraken. That was the Fergus goal. Excuse me. 0 for two on the power play for Edmonton. So, a good penalty kill. Hits 13-10 in favor of Seattle. Block shots 10 aside. You’ll hear Elaine Lambert talk a little bit about that. Um and giveaways were six for Edmonton, only three for the Seattle Kraken. Um the other goal scorers that we got in this game, Logan Morrison, Ben Meyers, and Yanni Newman on a empty net goal. And what I liked about this game was that there was just more aggression overall. And we’ll talk about that a little bit more in the second segment. But the shots on goal overall, Edmonton did outshoot the Seattle Kraken 2519 very prominently. Um, you know, or I should say Edmonton had their most shots in that second frame, but it was only Seattle that scored. That was the Logan Morrison goal. Um, you know, when Lane Lambert talked about some standouts. Well, specifically, he was asked about Jaden Schwarz. He was asked about Mattie Beneers. He was also asked about Tyson Jugnath, who I think had a really good game here. Um, you know, Oscar Fisker Molgard continues to be someone that stands out. And actually he hopped up to that line with um with new uh with Newman and Beneers for a little bit because unfortunately we saw Capo Kako came out of the game. He had an injury the other night. Chandler Stevenson came out of the game. So the Seattle Kraken a little bit banged up here. As a matter of fact, um you know, heading into this game, some of the injuries that we knew, and I talked about this the other night, but um the injuries that we knew going into this game were Brandon Montour, Jared McCann, Max McCormick, and now add uh StephVenson, Stevie, and Kako on there. So, you know, folks getting banged up, but uh it’s it’s hockey. It’s the preeason. Um we’ll see how how this all pans out. The game against Calgary the other night, just undisiplined. And again, I talked about this at for my open. That for me is the biggest takeaway is that this team was able to adjust. And we heard from Lane Lambert earlier in the day on Wednesday, today for those listening the day the episode drops, we heard from Lane Lambert that, you know, he ran his morning skate very in a very specific way so that on a backtoback, another takeaway on a backtoback, the Seattle Kraken were more focused and intentional in game two than they were in game one. Now, there were roster changes and things of that nature. This is a pretty solid looking roster that we saw and and probably, you know, the most uh NHL ready uh in a lot of different ways. Um and and I mean that also in players that we might see in the NHL. They might not be regular fixtures, but we have seen some players um that could make their way to the NHL this season. Hayden uh was in the game. Eberly Beneers, Schwarz, Newman, Wright, Fergus, Meyers, we’ll talk about a little bit. I liked Meyers game, liked Oscars’ game. Uh Shala Shalet again. Um, you know, Lommo, Logan Morenson, Joey Decor, as you just heard, he really liked the defenseman. That was Flurry, Olivesson, Alexiaak, Mahura. Solid game from Mahura, uh, Ty Nelson, and, uh, Tyson Jugnoth. And, um, of course, you had Joey Dord in net, but you know, Matty Baneers, uh, a player who had, uh, just the one point, but an assist. he was plus one. Uh time on ice 1905, 25 shifts overall and um took two shots. Uh Fergus had three shots as well as Logan Morrison. Uh Flurry also had those three shots. So the Seattle Kraken again didn’t have a bunch of shots, but you like to see that there was a lot more of a netfront presence. But again, I’ll talk about that a little bit more coming up on today’s episode of Locked on Kraken when we talked about, you know, what were some of the changes between game two of the preseason and game three. Also, make sure you’re following us on social media. We’re doing a lot of recaps. Unfortunately, for everydayers, you know that Joe Dabney is away or not as involved um as we had originally planned due to some personal things um that again not my story to tell. Uh, however, wishing her and the family the best and very grateful for the contributions that Joe does make, which comes on the social media end, at least for now. But we’re going to get Joe back on the camera. Don’t you fret, don’t you worry. Joe Dabney will be with me in Italy as we are covering Olympians that are from the Seattle Kraken organization, whether present day in the case of Philip Grubower and maybe Oscar Fisker Mulgard, Joey Decord. certainly in the pipeline. We’ll see if he can find his way onto that roster. But then we have Peter Edward Belmar or Oliver Bjorkstrand as players who used to play for the Seattle Kraken. And I guess maybe Oscar Fisker Mulgard. I’m not sure he makes the roster this year, but he might be a future Seattle Kraken. Okay. Uh let’s get back to what changed. big thing that Lane Lambert talked about that he was extremely disappointed in is that there wasn’t more netrum presence. I asked him that on Sunday. He talked about it. Then there was the game the other day, yesterday on Tuesday night against Calgary and the lack of discipline was huge. When we look at the game score for that game against the Calgary Flames, you can see it here that um Mitchell Stevens had the best game score along with Kaden Price, Kaden Hamill up there. Um and then you had a player like Alta Vinan who was all over the place. Evans and Flurry, not a particularly good game there. Milansen somewhere in the middle. Um, but you know, I I also want to take you uh to our good friends over at Natural Statrick because they have a breakdown of course and we use this uh game flow tracker. We use um all kinds of different things when it comes to, you know, how to break this down a little bit better. And so I want to take you to uh something that we saw from um from natural static and it is the heat map because it really it really illustrates what Lane Lambert was talking about and apologies this is taking a little long. It’s taking kind of long to upload this. Okay. Um here we go. Finally got the window up for those watching on YouTube. For those who are not, no fear. I will walk you through it. But this is the game against Calgary. We can see the heat map. This is in all situations. And Calgary had two goals in that netfront area in the high danger area, low slot and then on that coming into their zone on the left circle. Whereas the Seattle Kraken, you know, they only had their one goal was just in front of the netfront within in that slot deep in into the zone. So, that’s good. But there wasn’t as much activity in that area comparative to what we see for Calgary. And the game score uh or the flow game flow, excuse me, um in all situations, you can see it was all Calgary, all game. and Lane Lambert really didn’t like that. He felt there was a lack of discipline and you’re hardressed to to say no to that. So, um let’s take a look now at what the game or excuse me the game flow was and then I’ll show you the game score again for tonight’s game, Wednesday night’s game against Edmonton. And against Edmonton, you can see here that the Seattle Kraken, it’s still, you know, comparative to their opponent. I think they can still get more time in that zone um or in that uh you know low slot area, but it’s much more concentrated than it was in the Calgary game. You can see that there were two goals right in front of the netfront. Another one, I believe that was the uh Meyers goal. Really great pass that was won by Everly and uh Schwarz was there as well. and they did a great job with puck battles. Now, that’s another thing that has been an emphasis of Lane Lambert, something that I talked about a lot last season that never really transpired, but early on, especially with who we kind of think are going to be, you know, your rostered guys, a lot more focus on that area. But before we continue on here, I do want to show you the game score. Um, actually, let’s let’s go to the game score first and then um we’ll hear from Maddie Beneers. So, the game score for this game, if we take a look and, you know, love these data visualizations, you can see a much more balanced attack. It was Jamie Alexia that was kind of all over the place. I’ve actually liked what Jaime has done. I said that a lot last season, especially early last season, but I’ve been impressed with Jamie, Alexiaak, Ben Meyers, I mentioned, Lommo, Jaden Schwarz is up there, Oscar Fisker, Mulgard, someone that I talked about, Everly winning that puck battle, huge. Mattie Beners was lower kind of on the low end of the middle of the pack, but you’ll hear from Lane Lambert what he liked about Mattie B. Um, someone that he feels is standing out in all of the right ways. I think we just have to perhaps prepare that Matty Beners is not going to necessarily be a flashy player in the way that we want, but he continues to learn the hard parts of the game. And so maybe if he continues to to learn the hard parts, if and when the Seattle Kraken can find a little bit more either sandpaper or finesse, you know, how does that open up Mattiey’s game? I’m very curious. Anyway, speaking of Mattie Beners, let’s hear from Mattie Beners after this game and this win against Edmonton. What you saw on the ice tonight? It was good. I thought it was a good good team win. It was we were pretty connected um you know in all the zones. So, I thought it was a good win. Do you guys make a particular effort to try to shut down not just the two guys that were in the lineup but that whole team in terms of the offense that they have? Um yeah I mean they’re obviously you know some of the best players in the league. So you got to you got to put a focus when they’re on the ice and um you know I think that’s you know a lot what Lane’s talking about now is you know just a commitment to playing defense and getting getting pucks out of the zone so we can play fast and go play offense. So um you know I thought we did a pretty good job of that tonight. I love what Maddie said there because it lends itself to what I observed on Sunday. I and I I talked about this on Monday’s episode and that’s why I framed my question to Lane in the way that I did. Um I kind of likened it and I I know like as I am want to do I went on a random tangent about another sport but the shot clock mentality. There’s not a shot clock in hockey. I know that. And when you have a shot clock or when the shot clock is, you know, cuz shot clock the times are a little bit different depending on the levels that you play, etc. in the leagues. But when you have a 14-second shot clock versus a 20 second shot clock versus no shot clock at all, it changes how you can maneuver pace. What I like is that the Kraken are almost playing in the defensive end and the neutral zone. Piper Shaw actually asked specifically about neutral zone playing up the middle. Um neutral zone and playing up the middle. Um but uh you know when you focus on like Maddie said getting the puck back, retrieving the puck, it fuels your offense because that’s what we call in, you know, any sports where you have a back and forth exchange. Well, I guess not tennis, but like soccer and basketball, you’re talking about transition. You’re talking about the transition from defense to offense, and that can be the most lethal. Um, you you don’t want to you don’t want the defense on the other side to be able to set up in, you know, the half court or in this case, you know, be able to be settled into their defensive zone when you’re entering. Instead, you want to beat them there because then you have more ice to work with. And the Seattle Kraken are working with a lot more urgency when it comes to exits. I’ve talked about entries and exits because it was I think season 3 and basically every season after that where I wanted to bang my head against the wall with our entries and exits. We were getting stood up uh on the blue lines. We were getting absolutely swarmed in the neutral zone. And I see an effort to use our speed and our strength to get out of the defensive end and into the offensive end as quickly as possible and I love that. But then what’s also happening is when we’re in the offensive zone, and you’ll hear from Lane a little bit more coming up, but you have an opportunity to, you know, reset and recycle the offense. And that’s also something that I think this team is doing a little bit better. They have quick pace. They’re getting into the offensive zone as soon as possible. And then when they’re in the offensive zone, there is a sense of calm at their best. Definitely saw this on Sunday. There’s a sense of calm. There’s movement. People are moving. Um they’re occupying kind of like a basketball weave. If some guy leaves a space, someone else enters it. I mean, these are very basic tenants of sport. You know, they might be called different things, but they’re all the same. They they serve the same goal. And I like seeing the Seattle Kraken get back to these basics, and I do think that’s what Lane Lambert is extremely good at. Now, is this team going to be a competitor? I think they can shock some people if they focus on getting back to basics. And the fact that you’re kind of going back to basics, I think it shows that the foundation was cracked a little here and there’s a want to return back to this. And a guy like Lane Lambert, he’s as you’ll hear in a moment, I had to crank up the volume. He’s softspoken, at least when he’s talking to us, and he commands a lot of authority and attention in just how he in his demeanor, what he says and sometimes doesn’t say. So, I like that we’re seeing that for this Kraken team. But coming up next, who are some of the standouts? Uh, I want you to hear from Lane Lambert, what he thought about this game, and then I’ll break down I’ve mentioned a few of them throughout the show, but we’ll close out with u who are some of the standouts because after all, it’s the preeason and we have a roster to create. So, who’s standing out? um and who has a really good chance or should have a really good chance of making the Seattle Kraken. We’ll talk about that coming up on today’s episode. Thanks as always for making Locked on Kraken a part of your daily destination. If you’re not already, follow Locked on Kraken on Instagram. You can follow us on uh Tik Tok. You can find me uh on Blue Sky08 or black rosy media.com on Blue Sky. Let’s hear from Lane and then break it down including more specifically in this segment. Who were some of the standouts in this game three? And are there any carryovers from what we’ve seen from the first two games? I thought he played well. He uh he’s a smart player. Moves the puck well, sees the ice well. So, um you know, I thought he I thought he made a lot of good regroup passes and a lot of good breakout passes. I thought he played pretty well. I just want to pause there. He talks about regrouping. He’s talking about Jugnuff there. Um, I cut out the the part the question, but he was talking about Jugnath, who I think is a really interesting player. Okay, more lane. We, you know, as we go here, we’re trying to build uh, you know, our checking game and and certainly, uh, managing that through the middle of the ice. You know, we’ve got a couple of guys coming at you pretty hard. uh you know in McDavid and dry sidle, but I thought we just you know we bottled it up uh pretty decent and um you know made it difficult for them uh to uh you know to I guess execute through that area for the most part. You’re not going to keep them off the uh sheet all the time, but uh certainly uh we limited their chances. Uh Jaden has been good uh all training camp and and in both games he’s played. Um you know, just a veteran guy who understands how to play. um makes good plays, makes smart decisions. Um you know, you don’t realize how good a guy is until you have him, you know, every day. You see him a couple times a year, but uh certainly there’s a lot there. And uh I thought Matty was extremely responsible. Um you know, he’s in good position and and he’s working. I thought our whole team worked. Um you know, I thought we we had a good rebound game from what I considered wasn’t a very good performance last night. So, good for those guys. You know, it’s I don’t know if proud’s a pretty strong word, but uh certainly I think uh I think we we did a good job of of doing some of the things that we talked about. Um defending and I thought we were a lot more on our toes offensively or at least on the forch check made it a lot different last night. It seemed like we were backing up too much. I did not like that at all. I thought we were on our toes more tonight and that was a encouraging sign. He wants to attack and I’m here for it. I think a lot of this is what Dan Bowsma wanted to do. I think he had a different way of selling it or packaging it or explaining it. Um, but how Lane explains it is much more defensively minded. And you know, I love that. I absolutely Chef’s kiss. Love that. So, who are some standouts? I agree with Lane as far as Jaden Schwarz, but if you are an everydayer, that shouldn’t surprise you. I have always been a Schwarzy fan. Um, I do like what Mattie B is doing. I know a lot of people maybe even consider him, not a lot, but some people consider him, you know, maybe not the strongest of our draft picks when it comes to the NHL level. I don’t know what the future hold. none of us do, right? What the future holds for Mattie B. I I would love to see him get a little bit of weight on his body. Keep a little weight on there. Um, but I just think he’s super smart and he’s a hard worker. And um, you know, he’s kind of he might be a transition between the early days of the Seattle Kraken and what the promise of tomorrow is. And I’m okay with that for now. I still I still believe in Mattie B. uh Maddie v 2025 year of beneers. So I’ve got I mean it’s a little less than half of the season uh before we change the calendar to 2026, but I still believe in Maddie. Yanni, put him on the team. Put him on the team. Come on. Put him on the team. I I I would be shocked at this point if Yanni Newman is not in the NHL. Doesn’t isn’t on the opening roster. He’s looked really good. He’s very focused and determined. Um, you know, some of these other guys, younger guys, we’re going to see him at the AHL level and I think there’s a good chance that they come up whether it’s around that Olympic break. Of course, injuries you always have to take into consideration. There are already some injuries that the Seattle Kraken are dealing with, but um I’m very curious to see um Nik Koko’s already been getting some shine. I think that’s more so he’s AHL ready so uh you know Derek Laxel will have him ready to go. Um I’ve really liked Oscar Fisker Mulgard early on. Jagger Fergus as was told to us and as promised Lane wanted him to get more shine. He did in this game on a power play goal. Um so I think he’s someone to watch. Jugnath is another fantastic player. Hayden had a great game. Ben Meyers again that feed where you saw Jaden and Jordan working in that corner and then kind of a blind pass out one timer knocking knocking it through. A lot of promise for this Kraken squad. We’ve said that in preeason before and then seen them bomb in the regular season. So, you know, I say all of this uh just wanting to ride the wave, but I like what we’re seeing so far. I like that Lane Lambert in real time, whether it’s at practice or in between practices at morning skate. He is going to instruct his team and I love that. Now, I do think there are some NHLers that will not like a coach like that. And to me, I say I guess those players don’t like winning. because it’s the small habits, it’s the details, it’s the compound effect. That’s how you become an elite level player, an elite level organization, and eventually a champion. So, early returns, I’m liking what I’m seeing from Lane. Uh the last few days have been a little hectic with um just some personal things I’ve been dealing with and also some travel things I’ve been having to manage while here in Seattle. I should be at practice tomorrow um and throughout the rest of the week. So stay tuned. We will get back on track with some of our behind the scenes and extra bonus content. A reminder to be kind to yourself. You never know what someone’s going through, what their family is going through. Sometimes you just got to give people a little space. Um, a reminder to uh be kind to yourself, be kind to others, and to hold fast, to stay true and loud and proud, we say. Let’s go Kraken. And congratulations, Mariners. Congratulations, Cal Raleigh. And I have to give a shout out to Kirby because he also is from Elon University in North Carolina. So, EU, you know, North Carolina raised up. Congratulations to the Mariners. All right, hockey fans. I will catch you on the next episode. Follow us on social media if you want to know the daily schedule. And if you see me around the rink, please come say hi. All right, until the next episode. Peace out, everybody.

  1. I didn’t watch, but from the highlights and game analytics it looked like Edmonton played fairly well and was maybe the better team – but if Seattle can just keep in the margin of error and let goaltending be the difference, they’ll take enough points off better teams to be competitive down the stretch.
