ST LOUIS CARDINALS VS CHICAGO CUBS ⚾ MLB REGULAR SEASON SEP 26, 2025
All right. Heat. Heat. Heat. this time. Can’t get it and neither could the That’s a That’s a big piece right in the middle of our lineup that uh you know they have to game plan for. So, um, it’s a huge piece. Uh, you know, I think everyone around the league knows how good of a hitter he is and and what he brings to the table. So, I’m glad that he’s coming back. Is there a certain way that a team has to approach heading into the playoffs? Like, do you have to be hot? Do you have to be in a little bit of a groove or does it not matter because it’s a completely different season once the postseason starts? Yeah, I mean it like like you said, it’s a different season. um you know, you want to be playing good ball when you go in, but um just knowing what this team’s capable of, you know what, um I feel like we have, you know, even my the box scores might not look like at least I feel like we’ve been playing good baseball and um you know, there’s a lot to be excited about, but just just knowing that there’s a good a group that’s kind of been there before, at least, you know, a large portion of it. Um, you know, you just kind of trust that guys the guys are going to have the right mindset going into this and and I I think there’s a lot to be excited about. Best of luck this weekend. Thank you. He traveled for work and he would go to places all over Europe and stuff. he was in sales and feel like he would come home and and try and cook the things he ate overseas. And so I credit my dad for that. manager in Milwaukee for a long time and now you’re doing this here in Chicago. Yeah. I mean, look, we’ve got a goal this weekend. We got to win two out of three. I mean, that’s that’s what we have to do. You want my ideal brothers, we win Friday and Saturday, and that’s, you know, right? Um, but that’s that’s that’s our job. And then the rest of the stuff, you know, you I don’t worry about any of that stuff today. Uh, you know, we just try to win the game today. We just try to win the game tomorrow. And then it’s reported J Mo tomorrow possibly. Um your thoughts on those two guys having their last starts before you have to make a playoff rosters and all of those things. Yeah, I mean look the the thing I think we’d forget about we we have it’s 162 games and the guys got to pitch and they got to play and we got to finish the season and we got nine innings, 27 innings to cover this weekend. So everybody’s got to contribute to that and you got to do your part on that. And so yeah, it’s Collins turn up today. It’s it’s J Mo’s turn tomorrow. Um and we’ll and we’ll go from there on Sunday to see kind of like how we can um best cover the nine innings. But um that’s the schedule the next couple days. And those guys have both uh coming off two great starts. They both they both had great starts in Cincinnati and hopefully we can keep that going here uh here at home. Now hopefully before Sunday you get to celebrate that you’re going to have some playoff games here in Chicago in just a couple days. Good luck. Thanks Kum. Appreciate it. Cubs wearing their snazzy City Connect uniforms, the powder blue shirts, red numbers on their backs, blue and white hats, white trousers, blue socks, red birds in their traveling gray shirts and trousers, red numbers, hats, helmets, and socks. We are ready for baseball. Lars Mut Nutbar will lead it off against right-hander Colin Ray. Ray looking for his 11th win. Here we go. First pitch of the day. Swung on, lifted to left. It is playable for Hap. Battling the Sun. Makes the catch. Ian put the glove up. Ron to block out the sun, but he’s got a lot of experience playing in the outfield at Wrigley and he made the play. One down. Wow. And today’s going to be one of those days that with the ball gets in the air, the wind is blowing out to the middle of the diamond. So any ball hit to the outfield is going to get a lot of extra carry today. And the bright sunshine is definitely especially to me in the middle of the diamond is going to be difficult. I I would anticipate the center fielders and the infielders going out to short center could have a little issue. Ivon Herrera, the right-handed batting designated hitter, takes a strike. Colin Ray started last eight days ago in Cincinnati. Pitched very well against the Reds. Here’s the next pitch. Swung on and missed September 8 at Cincy. He worked seven innings, gave up just one run, but suffered a one to nothing loss. He’s ahead of Herrera 0 and2. The pitch fisted foul back to the screen. Well, he was paired up with Green that day and that’s the day Green had a no hitter. I think the Cubs broke up the no hitter with two outs in the seventh inning. Suzuki had a double. Yeah, there you go. Mhm. But both guys were I mean just lights out for seven innings. Now the O2 to Herrera. Poked fouled out of play. Ron, as you think about Colin Ray facing the Cardinals today, what’s on your mind? I love his fast ball and the way he pitches around the edges of the strike zone, especially on either corner um in and away and then he mixes into breaking ball, but I I really think he gets hitters not looking for the fast ball at times and then all of a sudden he zips that heater in on a corner. He just has great command of the fast ball. Breaking ball just missed. Terrera has a very distinctive batting stance, wide open and hits out of a bit of a crouch and he takes just inside the count. Two and two. His left foot is way over near the restraining line of the batter’s box and only the toe is on the ground on his left foot. The heel is in the air. Here comes the 2-2 swing and a miss. Strike three. Fast ball got him. First strike out of the day for Colin Ray. Two down, Alec Berles, the batter. Great crowd today at Wrigley. Big right-hander Miles Michael, 6’4, 225 lbs. He’s a veteran. just had his 37th birthday back in August and the last time he was here at Wrigley, he would like to forget about that game. We’ll talk about that in a minute as Michael Bush takes high for ball one. Ron, what’s the plan against Miles Michael today? Well, for years it was, you know, well into the majority of fast balls for Michael, whether it was a four seamer or two seamer. Bush lines one to right, shallow coming in. Walker makes a running catch. soft line drive. Out number one, no score. First inning, the batter Nicoer. But now Michael is he mixes in more breaking pitches, you know, and he’s going to use all the pitches. He’s got them all, too. You know, fast ball, two of them, curveball, slider change. Um, but me to me, he still tries to hard stuff and he, you know, he’s got that mentality of attack. So, he’s going to throw a lot of strikes. You be ready to hit when you step in the box. Nico her steps in. Nico will take a fast ball low. No score. Bottom of the first. Cubs leadoff man presented by Benny’s Beverage Depot. Two balls in no strikes on her. Right-hander to right hander. The pitch swinging a drive left center field and deep. Back goes Scott. It’s got a chance. It’s gone. Home run Nicoer. Cubs lead one to nothing. Did we say it’s going to be a good day to hit here at the friendly confines? Nico gets a heater and he smashes this ball to left center field just to the left field side of the hitting background and this is a no doubt blast off the bat and his seventh of the year. Hubs lead one to nothing. And here is Ian Hap. Another Hefty, Hefty, Hefty home run, sponsored by Hefty, the official trash bag of the Chicago Cubs. Hefty strength that’s anything but ordinary. I was just going to say the last time Michael was here, Ron, he had a very rocky outing to say the least. He allowed six home runs to Cubs batters as Hap takes inside. That was the day. It was the 4th of July a couple of months ago and the Cubs had a franchise record eight home runs in the game and six against Michaelus. Yeah, it was just one of those days. Cubs need need to put a couple of those days together now. I mean, you don’t have to have eight home runs, but some good quality offense. App swings and misses strike three and that’s out number two. Here’s a swing and a foul off to the left out of play. Cardinals are three games below the break even point. They were eliminated earlier this week when they lost a game in San Francisco, but you know they would love to play the role of spoiler. What are your arch rivals for? That’s right. You know they’re going to give the Cubs all they got for these three games. Tucker taps it slowly up along first. Fair ball gloved by the first baseman. Berles steps on the bag to end the inning, but the Cubs take the early lead on the home run by Nicoer. After one, Cubs won Cardinals nothing. This is the score and the Southwest Airlines Cubs. The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros of the diamond shine. Are you ready? Oppo Taco. I’m I’m going to guess it’s an oppos opposite field upper deck. Maybe something uh like a Yeah. Home run to the opposite field. You got it. This is a good one. A hack. The second inning is brought to you by Seaglass Wines, official partner of the Cubs, bringing the California coast to you wherever you are. Pat Zack, thank you. Second inning, Nolan Erinado leads it off and fouls it away. Aronado has been bothered by a sore right shoulder. As a result, his power numbers are not nearly what they normally are. 11 home runs all year for Aronado. 51 driven in hitting 236. Those numbers do not remind you of the Nolan Aronado that we’ve known for about the last decade. No. And he’s missed some substantial time, too. Even though he’s played through that shoulder injury, he’s only got 395 at 394 at bats. So, you know, you’re you’re minus probably for someone like him at least 100 at bats right now. Fly ball to right center converging. Crow Armstrong and Suzuki. Pete Crow Armstrong makes the catch. Colin Ray has begun his day favorably, setting down the first four Cardinals. And the batter is Nolan Gorman. Another perfect pitch. This looked like a little cutter right on just off the plate away, but you know, maybe a third of a baseball off the plate. Perfect pitcher pitch. Gorman, a left-handed batter hitting .204. Fastball away. The uniform descriptions we gave you. Sponsored by Benjamin Moore. Thomas Saji, a right-handed batter, steps in. Saji swings and misses. So JC playing shortstop hitting 259 with a couple of home runs and now the 01 from Colin Ray. A check swing foul out of play. Nothing and two. This is the only game going on around the big leagues. We welcome all of you who might be tuned in waiting for your team to play later on tonight. San Diego, for example, they play against Arizona tonight. That game is in San Diego. This pitch is fisted foul. Pretty good matchup run. It’ll be you Darvish going for the Padres’s and Zack Gallon for Arizona. Yeah, right. That’s a very good matchup. Cubs lead one to nothing. a man at first with one away for the Cardinals. And now the 02 from Colin Ray. So JC drives one down the line in left curling toward foul territory and out of play. Cub’s magic number is two. any combination of two Cub wins or San Diego losses and the Cubs will be home for the opening series starting next Tuesday. Chopper foul and it will be against San Diego. It’s just a matter of will the series be here at Wrigley or in Southern California. That’s right. Yeah. And obviously the Cubs would love to have that game here or games plural here in Chicago. Elbows in two strikes. Colin Ray to the belt. The big tall right-hander fires and it’s up and in for a ball. One and two. A few Cardinal fans. Not all that many though. Not nearly as many as would normally be here. They’ve been eliminated. And the one-two from the Cub right-hander fouled down the right field line. Out of play. Casey really hasn’t had good swing yet at Ray. He has thrown some good pitches on either side of the plate and then that last one up and in. Just been fighting these pitches off. Very short lead by Gorman at first. So JC swings and misses and the bat goes flying. And that is out number two. Strikeout number two for Colin Ray. Then bat hit against the screen over the Cubs third base dugout. Thankfully, otherwise that would have gone flying into the stands. That was an impressive bat toss. That That one was twothird of the way up the netting above the probably the camera. Well, and I’ve had doubles that didn’t go that far. Pedro Pes the batter. He’ll take a strike 0 and one. There was some serious hang time on that bat. Yeah, it was going it was going strong, too. Yeah. I don’t remember that being an issue for you losing no the grip on the bat when you swung. I think in 17 years of playing professional baseball, I think I only did it once actually. Now the 01 to Pahes. Big chopper over the mound. Charging her. He’ll glean make the toss to first in time. No runs for the Cardinals. They get a hit, leave one. Middle of inning number two. Cubs one. Cardinals nothing. This is the show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros let the diamond shine. Biggest thing we’re bringing is a brand new Tony Gwyn drop I did with his estate. So, we just signed a deal at the realist.com to actually go through his entire archives and present them and auction them off. We go to the bottom of inning number two. Cubs lead one to nothing. Sea Suzuki fouls the pitch away. Sea put on a good show last night with a couple of home runs against the Mets. Drove in four and he hits a fly ball down the left field line. Long run nbar toward the line makes a running catch. Suzuki is retired. One away and the batter is Pete Crow Armstrong. Two seam fast in on Suzuki. That one got in on him enough. He put pretty good swing on it but just didn’t barrel that ball up. Michael is not having a great year. He is 8 and 10. his erra 4.76. But it should be noted he’s pitched well lately. As Pete Cro Armstrong checks and that’s going to cost him a strike he tried to hold up, couldn’t do it. The last five straight games from Michael Ron, he’s allowed either one or two earned runs in all five games. So, he’s kept the Cardinals in those games. Here’s a ball inside. But on the 4th of July, he had a nightmare here at Wrigley, allowing six home runs. By the third inning, he had given up six homers. Cubs finished with eight that day. I did a little research. Michael Bush had a three homer game. I think a couple of those were against Michaels. Pete Cro Armstrong batting right now had two. And then one each for Seya, Carson Kelly, and Dansby Swanson. The next offering is high. The Cubs set a franchise record that day with eight home runs in a nine inning game. And since they didn’t bat in the ninth inning, it was really eight homers in eight innings. That’s right. Now the 2-2 swinging a miss. A high fast ball got him. Two down, second strike out from Michael. Cubs lead one to nothing. and the batter Danby Swanson. Yeah, I guess starts out inside. Pete starts to attack it and then comes back over the middle of the plate, but it’s up about shoulder high. This is game 11 between the Cubs and Cardinals for the year as Swanson will take a strike. They have split the first 10 which is very very common in this long and glorious history of competition between the two. Even if one team is having a particularly good year and the other team not so much, it’s almost always break even at the end of the year in their head-to-head battles. Yeah, they they give each other fits. They really do. They battle each other hard. Here’s a high pop fly shallow left Sy the shorts stop out calling and making the catch and it’s a one two three inning for Michaelus as we go to the third Cubs won Cardinals nothing on the score and the Southwest Airlines Cubs radio before he was feared on the field Jr was chasing wins on a different kind of field for the Akunas el baseball was a story told in fastball Of all the late night rematches, every loading screen was a part of the strategy. Just getting started in this final weekend of the regular season. And the next pitch check swing foul. 120 start tomorrow. That’ll be Jameson Tyion against Michael McGrevy. Neither team has announced the starter for Sunday, and all games will start at the exact same time. For the Cubs, it’ll be 2:20 in the afternoon against St. Louis on Sunday, but that’s the final day of the season. And for the last decade or so, every game starts at the same time on the season’s final day. Adds a little drama. Here’s the one-two pitch outside. Two and two. It’s great for scoreboard watching for all the teams that are fighting for that last spot. Sure. Yeah. And now the two- two swing and a miss strike three. Third strike out for Colin Ray. He’s looking at Ray’s numbers earlier on. He’s done a good job overall. 10 wins, seven losses, but he’s kept the Cubs in most of his starts. He has a 3 to1 ratio of strikeouts to walks. He’s giving up only one homer for about every eight innings of work, which is good. Victor Scott will bunt the ball foul and the count is 0 and one. The other thing too is, you know, he’s trending really, really well. He had a great start in Cincinnati and now he’s off to a very nice start here against St. Louis. You know that that matters when you’re getting playoff time. Who are your hot guys? Swing and a miss. Nothing in two. I think it matters a lot. A lot. He qualifies. He has been throwing the ball well. You want your hot pitchers and hot hitters in there as often as possible. Here’s the O2 swing and a miss. Strike three. Breaking ball got him. Four strikeouts for Colin Ray. Cubs lead one to nothing. If you’re just joining us, Nicoer belted a first inning solo home run. And now the batter is Lars Nbar. Strikeouts by Cubs pitchers brought to you by your Chicago Northwest Indiana Hyundai dealer. Back-to-back punch outs here in third for Ray. Nbar flyed to left to begin the game. He pokes one foul to left out of play. Cardinals were off yesterday. Newbar feet close together. Slightly open stance. Here comes the 01. Bouncing ball to first should be routine for BCH. Underhand feed to Ray on the bag. Score at three to one. Cardinals go one, two, three. And at the end of two and a half, Cubs won St. Louis nothing on the score. And the Ask yourself now, are you ready? The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Today, Reese Maguire is on deck for the Cubs. Who’s on deck is brought to you by Timberch decking and railing. Everything wood should be. Visit timbert.com. Pat Reese Maguire, left-handed batting catcher leads off the Cubs third against Miles Michaels. And the big right-hander brings it. And that’s in there for a strike. Nothing in one. Maguire 227 average, but he does have nine home runs. He’s driven in 24 and the next pitch bounced over the mound charging the shortstop. So JC makes the throw to first in time and that’s out number one. Maguire bounces out to short and the batter is Matt Shaw. Maguire, you know, you were talking about his numbers, nine bombs and just over a hundred at bats. You know, he’s done an excellent job for the Cubs and backup duty. Him and Kelly both have been a very good combination of right left on the offensive side and doing a good job behind the plate. Here is Matt Shaw taking a strike. Delia out for most of the year this season. I think the guys that do the catching, especially the guy that does the majority of catching, he might be among the most fatigued and tired ball player at this time of year of anyone. Now, I I saw Carson Kelly earlier this morning when I first got to the ballpark in the clubhouse. We were just hanging out talking and I asked him that. I go, “How you feeling?” Goes, “I’m good. I feel good.” You know, he’s in great shape. He’s hard worker. Extremely hard worker. Mhm. He’s gone through this, you know, this isn’t his first time around in the league and and uh he’s had a very very good year for the Cubs, but he was fresh and, you know, just ready to go. So, big tip of the cap to those guys. They have they’ve worked hard this year. There’s a pitch low and outside. Carson Kelly used to play for these Cardinals for a while, but I I know talking to Randy Hundley about catching all the day games back in the day, this is before they had lights. And Leo de Rocher ran him out there. I think he actually caught 160 games one year and he said, “I had nothing left at the end of the year in terms of power. I I could still do my catching.” Okay. But he said, “I had no strength.” So he said, “If if you’re a a catcher who likes to hit,” and he was, he said, “You better do all your damage in the first half of the year cuz you won’t have much left at the end.” inside. It’s three and two to Shawn. What do you call the guy that was backing up Randy back then? Probably payroll bandit. Payroll bandit. I I don’t even know who it would have been. Nobody did. He never played. There’s a swinging a foul off to the right out of play because that means especially back then and you know this cuz this is what we did as a kid. We would go to those Sunday double headers as a family. Oh yeah. Right. And so that means if Ry’s catching 100, let’s say 160 or 150 games, he’s catching both both ends of the double header. Swinging a foul off to the right almost every single Sunday. Yeah. Right. Teams would play 20 double headers in the year. Can you imagine catching both ends of 20 double headers? No. Cubs lead one to nothing. We’re in the bottom of the third. Matt Shaw will hit a ground ball to the hole at short. Backhanded by Saji. Throws to first to get him. And that’s out number two. Since the home run by Nicoer, Michael has set down the last seven in a row. And here is Michael Bush. And we’re coming to you live all season long from the Invesco QQQ broadcast booth, brought ETF partner of the Chicago Cubs. There’s the pitch on the way and it’s in there for a strike. Now, Zach Zademan was listening to us talk about the backup catchers. Now, these would have been guys who maybe caught a few innings, but I’m pretty sure Randy made something like 160 starts or 159 starts. Gan Oliver got into 23 games that year. I knew Gene. Now, he was a good hitter. He probably appeared as a pinch hitter batting for the pitcher in those days. And Bill Heath got into 27 games as a Cubs catcher, but I don’t think they caught the entire nine innings very often at all. One and two on Michael Bush. He lined out to right his first time. Cubs lead one to nothing in the third. And the pitch on the way. Fast ball is inside. Two and two. Michael’s at bats just looks solid. He He’s seeing the ball really well. That was a fast ball inside right underneath his left or his right elbow inside. He just lifted up his elbow and you just know he is seeing the ball exceptionally well. Inside from Michael. Nico thought it was a little bit high. Yeah, this one was way up. This one was a miss by Bill Miller. He doesn’t miss a lot. He’s pretty good balls and strikes, but that one was quite a bit high. Porner now with 61 RBI’s hitting an even 300 and he takes a bender down low 2 and2er second in the league in batting behind the Phillies Trey Turner. Turner hitting 305. He’s been out with a while for a while with an injury. Nico would need a big weekend to catch him. And the two-2er swings and misses. Strike three. Maybe the best fast that Michaelus has cut loose today. Cubs don’t score. We go to the fourth inning. Cubs won. Cardinals nothing on. The show is about to begin. Because wildcard teams have become world champions seven different times since the wild card was introduced. I think that was introduced in 1995 if I’m not mistaken. I believe that’s right. So 30 years, seven World Series champions. It’s just a little less than a quarter of the time that the wild card team or a wild card team has become world champs. Swaging a miss strike three. One ball of no strike on Tucker. And the pitch to Kyle. He takes a strike. One and one. Rob, what would be your most your biggest challenge if you had not played in a big league game for 24 days like Kyle Tucker? Getting your timing down at home plate, your game timing because you’re playing now with adrenaline of the game. you know, and just trying to get that seeing the the pitch, the speed of the game. You know, when you you can do simulated games and get live pitching, but there’s nothing like throwing 30 30 40,000 people in the stands and then you’re facing someone with a different uniform on that. You just can’t simulate that. You try, you do the best you can, but you know, so I think timing for him right now and just getting some at bats and and I really think getting having a little bit of success here. There we go. Well, Ben May, the second base umpire is kind of behind Nico and off to the left field side of him and the crowd gets so loud on the field sometimes you can’t hear the umpire. So, it is a good policy to just continue on and make the play. There’s a drive towards center right there. Pete Crow Armstrong, he’s got it. Two down, sixth inning. Cubs lead three to nothing. Colin Ray just rolling right along. Has not walked a man. very few three ball counts if any. I can’t recall no more than maybe one or two. Ron, he has been locked in. I I agree with you. The fast ball command has been outstanding on both edges of the plate. And because of that, his breaking ball, he’s been able to throw it for a strike early in the count and then, you know, spin it down to get the punch out as the at bat continues. He’s been locked in. Breaking ball will load to Lars Nbar. Cubs enjoying a four nothing lead. Here’s the next pitch in there for a called strike. One and one. 1998 on this day. It was the final Saturday of the regular season down at the old Astrodome. Here’s a pitch inside. The Cubs beat Houston that day 3-2 on a weird final play. Rod Beck, yeah, shooter was the Cubs closer at that time. Dave Clark was the last batter. Here is a pitch low and inside. And if you can picture this, Ron, after lunging at Dave Clark, who hit a little chopper up along the first baseline, Rod Beck then threw the ball to first and hit Clark in the back and the ball bounced down the right field line as the tying run, apparent tying run, scored from second base on the play. But umpire Eric Greg ruled that Clark had run out of the baseline and was out. But it was a delayed call. So there were several seconds of confusion. Mhm. And this is going to be ball four to Nbar. But I remember Jim Ruggleman ran out to argue and he made me laugh later on. He said, “I wasn’t sure what I was going to argue, but I was going to argue something.” That way, Jimmy. Yeah. And it worked. Yeah. He could have been a lawyer. Wriglewin, one of my coaches in Los Angeles. Great great guy. You’ve been friends with with Rigs a long time, too. I still talk to him. Outstanding guy. Still talk to him on the phone every once in a while. Big big fan of Rigs. Excellent manager. He probably should be managing somewhere still. I know he he was one of those guys that every day he came to the ballpark. He worked extremely hard as a coach, a manager to to just give your team the best chance to live. Nine drive off the glove of a diving Swanson. That’s going to be a base hit. Dansby frustrated. Thought he should have caught the ball. A very difficult chance. He was on the outfield grass diving toward the hole and that’s a tough catch to make when you’re diving. It is a base hit and now two men are on. So the Cardinals mounting a two out threat with runners at first and second and the batter is Alec Berles. Yeah, this one of those plays Dansby, you know, it’s a gold glove caliber play and he thinks he should make this play all the time. He just expects to do stuff like that. And hit off the edge of his glove and dropped in. And now going out to talk to Ray. And I think what they’re trying to do is give Caleb Felbar just a little more time to get ready. And yeah, that’s going to bring out Craig Council as Colin Ray has two outs here in the fifth. So unfortunately for Ray, he will not be able to get the win today. He is being congratulated though by all of his teammates. He came up big today. Yeah, he really did. And he’s in line to be the winning pitcher and he’ll get a tremendous ovation, I would think. as he leaves the mound. Craig Councel has not yet officially made the call. But let’s see if he is going to make the change. The home plate umpire, Bill Miller, goes out to say, Craig, either make the change or let’s play ball. And it is going to be a change. So Ray will walk to the dugout. And here comes a very welldeserved ovation for Colin Ray. He’s leaving a game not giving up a run with only two hits through four and two/3. Another great performance by Ray before he was feared on the field. Akuna Jr. was chasing wins on a different kind of for the Akunas. El baseball was a story told in fast balls and late night rematches. Every loading screen was a part of the strategy. And he makes the catch. Smash the smashes. That’s how Lstia was born. Come on. Good girl. inning sponsored by Flight by Yingling, the next generation of light beer. Cubs with couple long ones today, couple key ones, too. Home run by Nicoer. The 30th home run of the season for Pete Armstrong. And number 32 for Michael Bush. But the key right now, Caleb Thebar, Patrick, as he’s entering the ball game. And it’s a dangerous spot. You’re looking at the number three hitter, Alec Berles, one of the best hitters of the year for the Cardinals, hitting 293. Two outs, two on. Cubs lead four nothing. First pitch outside, ball one. Berles grounded out and struck out. Both of those of course against Colin Raybar 65 games and he’s had a busy year and a good year. 2.22 RA just misses outside and the count now 2 and 0. 66 appearances, 56 and 2/3 innings and a 2.22. That’s exactly right, Pat. The 20 that’s going to be low. You can tell he’s concerned about keeping the ball down. Yeah, down and away from Berles. He does not want to get anything inner half that he’s going to be able to hook. Let’s see if he can come back now. Three and0 on Berles and the pitch. Ball four. He walks him on four straight. So the Cardinals after two are out and nobody on have loaded the bags on two walks and an infield single. And now Nolan Areronado coming up with the bases loaded in this four nothing game. That’s a dangerous spot now. Areronado big time pop in his bat. It it seemed to me we talked about his shoulder issue but his shoulder I believe is healthy now and so you got to watch. He’s got big time pop. Areronado will take a strike. 0 and one. Aronado against Ray. Fly to center and grounded to third. Outfield pretty much straight away and deep against Areronado. Here comes the 01. Strike two corn. What’s on your mind on 0 and two, Ron? You got a couple options. That last pitch, a little back door hook catches the outside corner. I like the fast ball. I like I deal either that or bounce the slider down and in. The next pitch popped up fouled and out of play. It was a bender. Still 0 and two. Tried to go down and in with it. Didn’t quite get it down, but it was in. Aronado with various ailments limited to only 11 home runs for the year. This big crowd standing at Wriggler. It’s a full house and the O2 swing and a miss strike three. A high fast ball gets him. Aronado chasing a pitch up around the shoulders. No runs for the Cardinals. We go to the bottom of the sixth inning. Cubs four, St. Louis nothing. This is the score and the Southwest Airlines Cubs radio network. Take the Cubs with you in the Chicagoland area on the free The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Visit timbert.com. Left-hander John King, the new pitcher for St. Louis. Cubs lead 4 nothing. All of the Cubs runs on home runs. Solo by Nicoer in the first. Two-run homer by Pete Cro Armstrong in the fourth and a solo by Michael Bush in the fifth. All of those against the starter Miles Michaels. And now the bullpen for St. Lou takes over. First pitch down low to Hap. He in lines one into center. A base hit. Sharp single right back through the box and it brings up Kyle Tucker. Tucker had a single his last time up. Let’s see if that leads to bigger and better things. Absolutely for Ian. He gets this fast ball outer third. Kind of running away from him a little bit down and away. And he smokes this ball. You can’t hit a ball a line drive any harder than he just hit that one right back through the box. Hap will be held by Berles at first and here is Tucker standing in. I’m kind of glad Pat that Tucker’s going to see some left-handed pitching here in this series a little bit just to, you know, get a get a look, you know, guys throwing from the left side after missing 24 ball games. He grounded out his first arm and then singled into center. Both of those against Michaelels now facing the southpaw. One ball and no strike. Short lead by Hap. Sidearm delivery sinks low and inside. 2 and 0. This is such a classic rivalry the Cubs and Cardinals have. You never really feel secure primarily because comebacks are very common in the history of this series. If you jump out ahead, you can better bet that the other team is going to make a run at you at some point before the game is over. Berles holding the runner half at first. 3 and 0. Let’s see if Tucker has the green light. He does take a strike. That ball just in the zone down near the knees. Yeah, that was a borderline pitch down and away. And Bill Miller gave him the call. It was borderline. You could have went either way. It did clip. Maybe it just missed the edge of the strike zone. Here’s a pickoff throw to first. Not in time. We’ll be right back out here again tomorrow regardless of how this one turns out. Jameson Tyion against Michael McGrevy. That’s tomorrow at 120. And then a 220 series and season finale on Sunday. Fastball strike 3 and two. Let’s keep an eye on the runner half. You’re leading by four. Do you turn him loose here? I’m going to guess they are not going to cut him loose. I think the reason is they’re just going to let Kyle Tucker hit. No distractions, just you go up and hit. Payoff pitch swinging a high fly ball to center. Pretty well hit. Scott back to the warning track with room. makes the catch, tagging and going to second is Ian Half. Good base running. Half moving up from first to second. Scott caught the ball maybe 2 feet from the Ivy just to the left of dead center. And that’s good thinking and good base running by Ian Hap. Yeah, the the thing that, you know, made Hap decide to definitely take the risk and go to second is this ball’s hit and Scott is not behind the ball. He’s still drifting back towards the Ivy to catch it. So, he still takes a step backwards before he can throw to second base. And because of that, Ian took off for second. So, now a man in scoring position with one away. Tucker got a good piece of that ball. Missed a home run. That’s a great sign for the Cubs. That’s two balls he’s hit right on the barrel. Suzuki chops one toward third. That’s going to be fouled. Oh, and two on Sega. He has flyed to left and flyed to right. Cubs leading four to nothing here in the bottom of inning number six. Now the left-hander King glancing back at the runner deals low and inside almost hit him. It’s a wild pitch and down to third goes Ian Hap. I thought that ball might have nipped the batter Suzuki in the foot but it did not. He just was able to jump a rope and avoid and then it got by the catcher Pahes. Yeah, it it bounces in front of Suzuki’s feet and goes to the back stop and Suzuki right away letting Hap know that he can take third. Cardinals bring the infield in. And now the one-two pitch to Seya just missed outside. It’s going to be a wild pitch a minute ago. The play on which Hap went from second to third. Suzuki would like to drive in his 98th run of the year right now. And he swings and misses. Curveball gets him and that’s out number two. So now the infield backs up and Pete Crow Armstrong coming up. Pete made history as last time up with a home run. First Cub ever with 30 or more in each of the following categories. homers, doubles, and stolen bases in a single year. It’s quite a combo. Unbelievable. He gets jammed and fouls it away left side. Think of all the guys that have put on a Cubs uniform in all these years since the 1800s. And 30, 30, and 30. Is that what it is? Think how hard it is to achieve just one of those three, right? Absolutely. Here’s the 01. He’s going to bunt or at least he showed bunt and took it outside. One and one. There’s no rule that says you can’t lay down a bunt on a two out situation. Yeah, with a man at third, you’re looking to bunt what he what he’s reading is Areronado playing so far over towards short that if you bunt this ball down the third base line, it it would be a base hit because just the angles of where Aronado is coming from, it’s almost impossible to get something on the throw going to first with Pete’s speed. You experienced that play a few hundred times probably. You know, the infield is all about the angles that you take and where you’re positioned on the field. And if you draw a line to home plate from Aronado from, let’s say, his left foot, if you bunt that ball in that triangle, he’s really got to bust it hard going towards the line to field the bunt. It’s a tough play. 3-1 pitch. Swinging a foul back by Pete Co Armstrong. Now Areronado will back up and play deep. at third and well off the line. Ian Hap the runner at third in foul territory. King working from the stretch. Hubs trying to add to their four nothing lead right now with two outs in the sixth inning. And the payoff swinging a chopper foul. He hangs in there against lefties. He’s had some really good at bats including home runs against South Paws. You don’t see that front shoulder bail out. King with a brand new ball ready for the payoff pitch. Swinging a drive left center on the run. Scott deep left center makes the catch on the run on the warning track in front of the 368 sign. Pete Pro Armstrong drove it to the opposite gap, but Scott ran it down. Before he was feared on the field, Akuna Jr. was chasing wins on a different kind of for the Akunas. El baseball was a story told in fast balls and late night rematches. Every loading screen was a part of the strategy. Smash the smashes. That’s how Lestia was born. In fact, Suzuki chases it down. Gorman motoring into second with a standing double. Cardinals have a man in scoring position with nobody out here in the seventh inning. That is the first time in the game they’ve had a leadoff batter reach base to start the inning. And that’s going to bring out Craig Council. And the Cardinals now have men at first and third and nobody out as they start to make some noise. Uh you knew this game was, you know, unless the Cubs come in and and really pound the ball and and get a big, you know, a big gap between them run-wise. And this just going to be that series. You you knew that the Cardinals, they think of nothing better than to do that. And I don’t blame him. I I’ve always felt the same way when you were playing against your rival. really use a ground ball double play or probably a strikeout more so than anything else. Pedro Pes the batter, right-handed batting catcher. Kitridge deals fast ball missing. Naturally, the middle infielders playing back trying to get a ground ball that they can turn into a twin killing. Shaw backs up, plays a little deeper now at third. BCH holding the runner at first. Here’s the pitch. Fouled away. One and one. Bahes does have some pop. He’s got 11 home runs. Burly right-handed batting catcher. Kitridge to the belt. The bearded right-hander fires. Here’s a chopper foul. That’s a good pitch though. Yeah, that sinking fastball, that sinker run has led to many, many thousands of double plays over the years. Well, you you get the right-handed hitter that, you know, you think you’re on it and then you can’t quite get to it and you just bang it right into the ground and with nobody out, the thing that you have is for Shaw at third, if the ball carries him forward, he could fire home and cut the run down at the plate or with Pahes, you know, you’ve got a great double play candidate. Here comes the one-two pitch instead of tossed to first. If you are just joining us, the Cubs have played long ball today. Nico her homered in the first. Pete Crow Armstrong had a two-run homer in the fourth. Michael Bush a solo homer in the fifth. Four nothing Cubs. Seventh inning. Pahes gets jammed and fouls one away. that pitch. It’s almost an optical illusion from our broadcast booth. It looked like if he wouldn’t have hit that ball that it would have drilled him right in the belly. Yeah. No, I I would agree. I I don’t I would strongly advise young people not to swing at that pitch and get out of the way. Here comes the one two from Ketridge. It’s down low for a ball. Two and two. I can honestly say in 17 years of playing professional baseball, I never swung at a pitch and missed that it hit me. Nor did I think I’ve ever swung in a pitch that I thought was going to hit me. And nor would you want to do such a thing. No, no, no, no, no. You’d never. That was not something you’d go to the cage in practice. That’s for sure. Here comes the 2- two from Ketridge swinging a tapper foul. Big crowd at Wrigley. We’ll get the exact attendance figures soon, but it’s going to be a whopper. Cardinals get their bullpen going. A couple of right-handers start to throw. Ryan Fernandez is one of them. The two- two swing and a miss. Strike three. Ketridge strikes out Pace. That’s a big first out. One away. Jordan Walker the batter. The Cubs still lead four to nothing. Sharp breaking ball. Yeah. In perfect location. This ball starts out outer third and instead of sweeping across the zone, it is good downward tilt and stays on that outside corner but goes down and P swings right over the top of Walker has struck out and lined out in the game. Right-hander to right-hander. Pickoff throw to first. Not in time. Colin Ray, the Cubs starter, still the pitcher of record on the positive side. What a job he did today. And now the pitch. Fast ball just inside at the knees. Walker, one of the Cardinals top prospects, has had a disappointing year, hitting .213 with five home runs. The 10 ground ball sharply into left field, a base hit. Cardinals get on the board, scoring on the play as Gorman Walker a sharp single on the ground between third and short. And now it’s a four to one ball game and the Cardinals will have the tying run at home plate. That’s a little slider. That ball’s down two and Walker just hooks it enough to keep it away from Dansby. It’s short in the hole between short and third for the base knock and an RBI single. Three hits in the inning for St. Louis. Each team now with five hits in the game. The left-handed batting Victor Scott batting. He will swing and miss. He tried to hold up and couldn’t do it. 0 and one. Hardest working player of the game brought to you by Bosch Power Tools. Ketridge strikes out Scott. Two down in the inning. Cubs lead four to one with men at first and second. Lars Nbar the batter. Boy, another great slider. That’s the the strikeout pitch. It’s in the zone. It doesn’t sweep a lot, but boy, it sure gets good downward tilt to get the strike out. Newbar 0 for two with a walk. He’s got some power. Left-handed batter. Here’s the pitch in there for a cause strike. Kitri right on the edges of the strike zone. Boy, he’s made some good pitches. Runners take their leads first and second. Here’s the 01 called strike two. Nudbar looking at the first two. What’s on your mind here, Ron? I think this the slider has been his strikeout pitch. He could go with it again. The O2 on the way. Low and inside for a ball. So JC the runner at second, Walker at first. Newb Bar the left-handed batter waiting for the one two from Andrew Ketri. Here it comes. Swing and a miss. Strike three. Ketridge strikes out both Scott and Nutbar. In fact, he struck out Hes also. So he gets out of it. The Cardinals get one run and leave two. We go to the bottom of the seventh inning. Yeah, they really are. I couldn’t be happier for him and Pete. Now the O2 low and inside for a ball. He would like to get it over the infield if possible with that infield in and a man at third with one away. They’re going to try to get him, you know, obviously they’d love to have a strikeout, but to get him to hook a ground ball into the defense on the right side, see if he can get a ball up and out over the plate and get one to the outfield. Here’s the pitch. Check swing foul back. Cardinals got a run in the top of the inning. Cubs have scored in the bottom half. Cubs applauding the ball boy hustling out and getting the ball. Usually the lead at third by Shaw and the one-two line drive down the right field line. That’s a base hit. Extra bases into the corner. Michael Bush around second and holding with a double and the Cubs lead six to one. Another great day for Michael Bush. We’re in the seventh. He’s walked 32nd home run in the fifth and now an RBI double in the seventh for the Cubs. And Bushy continues to stay redot. His second RBI of the day. His 86th of the year. 86 RBI’s for a guy who’s hit lead off. Not bad. Big numbers. 32 and 86. Those are big numbers. Cardinal pitching coach will head to the mound. Dusty Blake talking with Graefo. The inning started with a walk. Swanson walked and then stole second after Maguire struck out. Cubs have lashed a couple of extra base knocks. Shaw an RBI triple to the corner in left. BCH an RBI double to the corner in right. And the Cubs with their biggest lead of the day, six to one. That was some meeting on the mound. I tell you that. That was a one-way meeting. I don’t think the pitcher had much to say. Here is Nicoer. Nico homerred in the first to start the scoring and he’ll take outside for a ball. That shadow line now is almost out to home plate. You reach up for it as a catcher and the ball is fouled and instead of going where you thought it would go, it goes much lower in your body. Yeah, that’s into the painful regions. This one, you’re exactly right. That’s has doubled over in pain. It’s two and two on Nicoer. Cubs lead six to one. And now the two- two pitch on the way. It’s in the dirt. And of course, the catcher Pes has to dig another one out of the dust. There you go. Block this one, too. There you go. I often think about the former Cardinal catcher Tim Macarver. Of course, got to know Tim pretty well over the years, but he said, “Catching it is hideous.” 3-2 pitch, little check swing, foul, and we’ll do it again. And he would know. He Yeah, he knew. He caught for four different decades. He started in 1959 and his career ended in 1980. Wouldn’t you just be mad at your dad? Mad at your dad? Yeah. Why would that be? Well, who do you think got you? Put the gear on you for the first time. You know, your dad should have said, “I don’t want you catching.” Play shorts stop. You’re good. Play short. Don’t Don’t pitch. Put the gear on. You’re stuck with that stuff. I’ve never really heard that concept before, Ron. I like it. Ground ball up the middle. Diving stop. And it’s a base hit. It’s a base hit. So JC, the shorts stop made a very nice diving stop. Stopping at third on the play is BCH. It’s an infield single for Nicoer. And I’m still thinking about your father theory. Well, my my dad was a boxer. And so putting catcher’s gear on was like, that’s no big deal. You know, you’re not getting punched in the nose. I mean, you know, you got a mask on. And he did. He put the gear on me at 7 years old. First glove I got, catcher’s glove. I went I’m going short and you became a college graduate in a big league ball. Yeah, there you go. Here is I in half batting. Cubs lead by a score of six to one. Now the Cubs are going to try to break it wide open. Little surprised the infield is not in all the way in this spot. How about you? Same. Ian runs well. I I don’t think you’re looking at a guaranteed double play candidate. Getting his second hit of the day. First and third. Cubs lead by five with one away in this seventh inning. Great crowd today. Not not just in numbers. You knew that would be the case. But in enthusiasm, they came ready to make some noise. And that will never get old. I think fans when the when the schedule first comes out, some of the first games that they look at and circle for games to go to is this series right here. Mhm. One ball and one strike to Ian Hap. Half batting left-handed, swings and misses. And again, it’s always difficult to determine how much of an effect the crowd has in a particular game or in a full season, but I would say they’ve had an effect today. Yeah, absolutely. Here comes the one two now. Ian Hap lines one to left field of base hit. A broken bat. Coming in to score on the play is Michael Bush. Nico her stops at second and the Cubs now with a seven to one lead. And this jam shot just over Areronado’s head who was playing somewhat in bounces in the infield dirt but over the head of Aronado for an RBI single for Hap and that bat died to hero. Oliver Marmal the manager will make a pitching change. We’ll be right back in a moment. Pitching changes by the opposition, sponsored by Sloan, the official water efficiency partner of the Cubs and leader in smart water. And sometimes your calling doesn’t shout, it humans like a lullaby floating through a warm night in San Pedro. Before he could walk, El Nino had already taken his first step toward greatness. For Philando Tatis Jr., Baseball wasn’t just in the house because papa was a protoo. It hung over his cradle like a promise. You know, we like to stay on topic here, but Squirrel, Squirrel, where Squirrel, where How about that? That That went right up into the batter’s eye into the camera position. How about that? Whoa, that one will fall into the White Socks dugout. Well, it looks like he’s still aggravated about being traded away. So excited she just threw it back. That was off the ledge, too. We can’t get that down. How do you get out, though? That’s the problem. There’s no exit. I’m going to throw out a restaurant kitchen term to you and then uh hit me with the baseball one. I’ll start first. Okay. Misen Plus. Oh, mason floss. That is as the chef, you put all your different ingredients out kind of before you start cooking, right? With the Cubs leading the Cardinals 7 to one here in the bottom half of the seventh inning. It’s been a three-run inning so far and still only one away with men at first and second. And Roy Croft is the new pitcher. Chris Royoft and the first pitch swung on and missed by Kyle Tucker. Kyle’s had some good at bats considering it’s his first game in 24 days. He’s grounded out, singled and flyed to the warning track in center. Here comes the 01. He takes inside and I think he’s laid off some tough pitches also. Ron, I think you’re right. He’s had good at bats, put some good swings, and just missed the home run to straightaway center, which that’s a great sign. and singled up the middle. Now that shadow line right at home plate, the umpire and the catcher are in the shade. Here’s a pitch low and inside. The other thing about his at bats is his eye. You know, we always talk about how good of an eye he has to plate with, not chasing a lot of pitches off the plate away. That has remained today. He has been very good not chasing pitches out of the zone. Hap at first, her at second. Fast ball is in there for a strike. Two and two. Top of the zone over the inside corner. Roy Croft big right-hander working. Cubs enjoying a three-run rally. Still only one away and two men on. Here’s the 2-2. Tucker takes outside. Three and two. That’s that pitch I was talking about, right? That pitch away and he just No chance of him swinging and chasing that pitch. Runners have their leads at first and second with one away. And the payoff pitch. It’s inside. It almost hit him. And it’s ball four. RBI’s by Cubs batter sponsored by Old National Bank where relationships and results matter. Get old. And a triple earlier in the inning by Matt Shaw. Triples by the Cubs batters. With that triple, Great Lakes Credit Union makes another donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank as Seyas Suzuki steps in. Infield back. Sey takes outside. Getting back to the Great Lakes Credit Union. They make a donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Join GLCU’s mission of banking for a greater good at glcu.org. Comes with the media lineup up right now by chefiqense. Never under overcook your food again. Purchased. Chefiq.com. Seya can pretty much finish the competitive part of the game if he can get a hold of one. Right now it’s already seven to one and we’re in the seventh inning. Right-hander to right hander. The 2- Sea takes a strike. I thought he’d be a little more aggressive on the two- pitch. I thought so, too. He might be having a little issue seeing with the shadows, but that was a fast ball at the knees right down the middle. Pretty good movement though, I will say, from Roy Crop. Now they’re 2-1. And Seya drives in the air deep left field. It’s got a chance. Grand Slam. Sea Suzuki with a grand slam and the Cubs have broken this game wide open and lead 11 to one. Well, and a couple big milestones for the Cubs today. Two guys get to 30 home runs. Suzuki with his 30th. And that’s 30 and over 100 RBI’s for Suzuki. Two big milestone numbers for a big league hitter. And Pete with his 30th bomb. What a day against the Cardinals here in the final weekend of the season. Pete Crow Armstrong the batter. He’ll take outside for a ball. You’re right, Ron. you played for a long time. To get 30 homers and 100 RBI’s on one swing is very significant. It’s a moment he’ll never forget. And look out. Pete Carl Armstrong gets hit on the leg by the pitch. And that nailed him pretty good. I think it hit him in the front knee. Pro Armstrong gets up. He was in some pain there. Greg Councel out to take a look at him. Neil Ramp, one of the trainers out as well. It’s a slider inside to Pete and it hits him in the right knee on the side of the leg. You know, right at the knee. He’s walking slowly. He’s going to stay in. And like you said, it was an it was a breaking ball and not Yeah. a fast ball. If if a guy’s trying to drill you, he would not throw a spinner at all. No, he’s not throwing a spinner at your knee. I can promise you that. He’s trying to hit you right in your number in the back in your middle of your back if he’s nice. It is a hit by pitch. Pete’s going to stay in the game. He’s going to jog a little bit down the right field line. And just by jogging, he gets a little ovation from the fans. That’s when you know you’re having a good day. Just by jogging, they give you a little standing O down the right field line. He got the big ovation after his 30th home run earlier in the game. But Suzuki now with, as you said, Ron, 30 homers and 101 RBI’s and that’s one he will never forget. Yeah. Yeah. Suzuki gave it a big fist pump going to first base. He knew it. Neil Ramp, the trainer, and Craig Councel hustle off the field. I don’t know what Bill Miller was doing. Bill Bill Miller pitcher was trying to throw a warm-up pitch in between and Bill Miller stepped in front of the catcher and wouldn’t let him do it. Oh, nothing like baseball. The umpire almost got drilled. Here’s a pitch outside to Dansby Swanson. He did. He stepped right in front of Pias and put his arm out and that pitcher was ready to throw a pitch then, you know, like a warm-up pitch. It sounds like It sounds kind of like a dangerous move to me. Yeah, Billy doesn’t have a bat in his hand. The one to Dansby. Not sure what you would block it with unless you took off your mask and that would be kind of awkward. But I mean, I don’t know why you wouldn’t let him throw a warm-up pitch if he’s standing there for 5 minutes. That doesn’t make much sense. Cubs lead 11 to one. Here’s a pitch. Almost a wild pitch way outside. Now we’ve reached that point of the day where the sun is still covering most of the field, but the plate, the batter, the umpire, and the catch are all in the shade. So, in the last fraction of a second, the ball leaves the sunlight and dips into the shadows. 2-1 pitch swung on and missed. Is it an issue yet? I don’t think it is, but it Well, a little bit. not as bad in and you know 10 15 minutes from now it’s worse when it’s halfway but you know you’re still trying to track the ball right to the barrel and the ball’s going to be in the sunlight all the way up until it just about gets to the hitting zone and then it’s going to go into a shadow two and two on Dansby one away Cubs have batted around in the inning Swanson the 10th man to bat Cubs have scored seven one of their biggest innings of the year will try to find out and see what has been their biggest runcoring inning this year. This has got to be a candidate. Yeah, they had some in Sacramento, right? Then they have a couple in Sacramento that sounds right. Couple in the same game if I remember right. Two two pitch low and inside to Swanson. This according to Zack Zman. Thank you, Zack. Second time in team history the Cubs have had three different players with three with 30 homers in a season. Third time swing and a miss strike three and Swanson is out number two and Reese Maguire coming up 392 ft on the grand slam by Suzuki. Yeah, with no wind or whatever. Whenever it does blow at all, it’s blowing out. Suzuki at that ball halfway up the bleachers. Swinging a miss by Maguire. It’s another hefty, hefty, hefty home run. Official trash bag of the Chicago Cubs. Hefty strength that’s anything but ordinary. Guys, in May, the Cubs scored eight runs in an inning against Miami. Swing and a miss. How about the Friday crazy game against Arizona here early in the year when Arizona scored something like eight in the top of the eighth and the Cubs came back with seven or eight of their own. Remember that one? Yeah, that’s when we drank extra coffee. Absolutely. Here’s a wild pitch and down to second goes Pete Crow Armstrong. Cubs out hitting St. Louis 10 to five and leading 11-1. Cubs trying to get that magic number down to one to clench that home field advantage for the Wildcard series. There’s a ball high and outside two and two. And if the Cubs can hang on to this sizable lead, and they certainly should, if Arizona would knock off San Diego tonight, there will be playoff baseball at Wrigley. The two-2 bouncer past the mound charging second baseman Gorman makes a running throw to first to get it. But the Cubs have a frolicum seven run seventh inning at Wrigley featuring a grand slam by Suzuki. We go to the eighth inning. Cubs 11, Cardinals one on the score and the Southwest Airlines Cubs radio network. Talking Cubs Monday through Friday afternoons with Spiegel and Holmes two to six on the score. One text, one snap, one the show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros of the diamond shine. Heat. Heat. A snack that Freddy cannot resist. I would have to say chips and guacamole. Organic mango. Yeah. Is that because of the strong Dominican contingent in the major leagues, bro? Has anybody ever struck out and gone crazy and smash the cooler full of mangoes? Nah, our team’s not really into smashing each other’s stuff, I guess. Are you a seasoning guy? You like to drown yourself in dips and sauces? No. No. Got to watch my figure. And it looks great, brother. I appreciate it. Very sexy man. Let’s go. Freddy Freeman, ladies and gentlemen. 77 cars for kids. That’s cars to donate your car today. And the seventh inning stretch was sponsored by the new Volvo XC90 designed for life. And Cubs have been banging the ball all over the yard today, Patrick. And they’re enjoying a 10-run lead. Daniel Palencia is the new pitcher in the bottom of the eighth inning. It is Colin Ray’s game to win. And I like the tone that he set for today’s game. He was all business. Five shutout innings. Ivon Herrera will lead off the Cardinal eighth inning and take high for a ball. Yeah. Five and two/3 right for five and two/3. No walks. Let’s see. He did walk one man right before he left but give up no runs. Now the next pitch, fly ball to center should be routine for Crow Armstrong. Backpedaling a little bit near the track. makes the catch. Jimmy Krooks is the guy that hit that fly ball. And Krooks is out number one. Wonder if John Crook ever had a teammate name of Krooks. Ladies and gentlemen, he’d be a good base stealer, wouldn’t he? Certainly sounds like he would be. Cubs pitching changes. They are sponsored by James Hardy Building Products siding with the Cubs. Yoel Poso the batter. He’ll take a strike. Poso hitting 237. Valencia could be a very important man in the upcoming weeks. Yeah, very much so. He was the closer for most of the year. spent some time on the injured list. Here’s a swing and a miss, but it would be important round for him just to have a good day today, possibly at some point over the weekend to get an inning in or two. Yeah, I would agree. I I think that’s, you know, you really want him to get back on track and feeling comfortable back on the mound again. and the O2 swing and a miss. Strike three. Poso strikes out. Valencia gets the first two here in the eighth inning. And the batter is Nolan Aronado. Let me correct that. This might Nolan Aronado has left the game. I think for mean is now going to pinch hit pad for Aronado with the game getting out of hand here a little bit. Jose Farmine and the pitch on the way to Fairmine and that’s going to be just outside for a ball. Catch of the game today sponsored by Catch De Moine. It’s game of the weekend getaway in De Moines where only the S’s are silent. Find all the fun at catchde moine.com. Been some very nice plays by the Cubs on defense today. Cubs have played really well in all phases today, Ron. And one of the best all-around performances in in memory really. I would agree. They hit the ball. They pitched well. They’ve made some good defensive plays. They’ve run the bases well. Well, 10 hits, right? You you hit some bombs. We got some home runs, but 10 hits. So, you know, everybody up and down the lineup’s contributed. Fast ball is inside to Fairmy. And three and0. Stolen bases by the Cubs. They’ve been powered all year by Aturo tire. Chicago’s hometown tire. Find a dealer at auro.com. Now the 3 0 to Fairmy from Palencia. And that’s right over the middle of the plate for a strike. Three and one. Nice little easy get me over fast ball on three and 0 at 101 miles an hour. He’ll get him. Valencia works over on the first base side of the rubber. Here’s the 3-1 pop fly. Might have broken his bat. The third baseman Shaw is going to make an easy catch and a very impressive one, two, three inning for Daniel Palencia as he is congratulated walking back to the dugout by catcher Reese Maguire. Three up, three down. We go to the bottom of the eighth inning. Cubs 11, Cardinals won before he was feared on the field. Akuna Jr. was chasing wins on a different kind of field. For the Akunas, El baseball was a story told in fast balls and late night rematches. Every loading screen was a part of the strategy. Smash the smashes. That’s how Lstia was born. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Now on chefiq.com that’s chef IQ off the field. Vote today at mlbto together.com/clmente award. Whole bunch of defensive changes Pat for the Cardinals. Joel Poso stays in the game at first. Jose Ferine now playing second. Nolan Gorman at third. Thank you Zack. Bottom of inning number eight. Cubs leading comfortably 11 to1. It was a fairly close game until the seventh inning when the Cubs put seven on the board featuring a grand slam by Seya Suzuki earlier. If you’re just joining us, maybe you’ve been working and now you’re in your car battling some Friday afternoon traffic. Nicoer had a homer in the first. Heat Crow Armstrong a two-run homer in the fourth. Michael Bush a solo in the fifth. So the Cubs have played long ball all day long and great pitching by Colin Ray and the bullpen. Yeah, Ray has been on Colin’s been on a roll, that’s for sure. He was he was outstanding today. Great fast ball, very good breaking ball. Shaw hits a high fly ball and a shallow left. Newbar will come in and make the catch. And that’s out number one. We’ll be right back out here again tomorrow. Of course, we will be keeping tabs on that game in San Diego later on tonight. Arizona at San Diego. U Darvish, former Cub pitching for the Padres’s. Zack Gallon going for Arizona. Here’s a swing and a line drive. Base hit to center. Moyes Bayeros lining one right back through the box. Roy Croft had to low bridge to avoid being nailed. That’ll throw a scare into you. Yeah, that ball was smoked back through the middle right by his coconut. by Asteros at first. Here’s Nicoer. Nico with a couple of hits. When you’re playing these big games, Ron, both late in the regular season and I think especially in the postseason, that first run that you get is huge just in terms of momentum and making the other guys on the other side play from behind. Yeah, no doubt. Absolutely. You get these teams that are scuffling a little and yeah, you get three or four runs ahead and next thing you know they’re all, you know, it’s just not the same group. You know, you lose the fight a little bit, but he’s trying to do some things a little different, maybe trying to hit some more home runs or do something and, you know, you just see the thing kind of slipping away. Warner with a couple of knocks today. Nico will foul it away. And I think that early scoring is especially important in home games at Wrigley. It really gets the crowd fired up and then they become a factor and that makes the comeback even more difficult for the opposition. Yeah, since Nico blasted that one into the center field seats, this crowd’s been into the game. Bouncing to third, charging and gloving Gorman. Good play by Gorman and he throws to first to get her on the play by Eststeros. moves into second base. Two outs in the eighth inning. Cubs leading 11 to one. And the batter is Kevin Elcontra batting for Ian Hap. So Craig Council letting a couple of guys getting a little bit of rest. That’s never a bad thing. I would think if you’re Craig Counsel, you are really going to pull for Arizona tonight in hopes that they can get a W. Here’s a base hit into right center field. Rounding third and scoring is by Asteros and the Cubs now lead 12 to one. So the guys off the bench now becoming a factor. Kevin Alcantra driving in Moyes by Eststeros and Kyle Tucker the batter. He just steps up, gets this fast ball that’s away, and he just smokes this ball in the right center field. It’s a very nice piece of hitting by the two young guys coming in to get some at bats. See how we did in the attendance game. It looks like Ron Kumer is the winner in the Benny’s Beverage Depot attendance game. Tucker swings and fouls it back. The actual figure 35,611. I I would have guessed more. Yeah. And I did guess more. Now, Ron, here is a uh a nickname for you. I’m not sure if this is Paul Zerang’s fine work or maybe Zack Zademan. You say what it is. I I’ll know. There is a pitch in for a strike. It has your attendance figure and then it has four asterisks. Okay. And then the name Kumalicious is the winner. Kumalicious. Almost afraid to ask who came up with that name. Here comes the O2 pitch. Swinging a foul back, but I I do think this is scrapbook material for you. I you go ahead and file that one away. Hey, Ziggy, could you sign that for me, Ziggy? I’ll have to introduce you in that manner tomorrow at the start of the game. Yeah, that’s it’s great. Along with former cub and allstar, the one and only Kumalicious. I don’t want to. It’s it’s part of being a journalist. You understand? Part of being a good reporter is that I feel obligated to do that. I don’t really want to. Right. Okay, Ziggy. Here’s the one, two to Kyle Tucker. It’s outside for a ball. Two and two. Cubs lead 12 to one. Getting back to Craig Council hoping for Arizona to win tonight so Cubs would not have to worry about winning these last two games. There’s a popup on the infield. This is going to end the inning. And Gorman over at third makes the catch to end the inning. Cubs get a run on the RBI single by Alcantra. We go to the ninth inning. Cubs 12. The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. Are you ready? And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros let the diamond shine. Moniac on the run. Sliding gravity. Can’t get it. It rolls up the line. Well, a bloop single now. A bloop double. You see him just slip right off the back. Clean up on base number one. Lis throws the pineapple up the line. What is going on down there back in the produce section? That’s good. How about that? Myers went all the way to the 380 mark. He had that in his glove. Wow. Heat. Heat. ly beautiful. Find yours at your locallyowned retailer. Visit benjaminmore.com today. The ninth inning is brought to you by Bosch Power Tools. The more you Bosch, the more you feel like a Bosch. Pat and Zach, before you turn the mic off, I think you have some additional information regarding Alcantra and that run batted in in the eighth inning. Yeah, it’s the first one of his career. First career RBI for Kevin Alcantra. Also, Moises Bister stays in the game. He’s at first. that we have not seen byos in the big leagues play first base. He was working at first base today. Early today, Nolan Gorman fouls it away. 0 and2 Brad Keller is the new man on the mound for the Cubs. Devs pitching changes sponsored by James Hardy building product sighting with the Cubs. That would tell you that they’re going to hope or need possibly by Asteros at some point could possibly get some action at first come October. You know, if you start making, you know, it changes back and forth with pinch hitters. Of course, the ball’s going to him, right? Bouncer foul. Of course, that’s standard. It’s a foul ball. One and two. Bon, it’s about time for you to think about the toast of the game ball player presented by Benny’s Beverage Depot. Certainly some candidates today. I think I think the candidate today, you know, you’ve got two guys that have done some incredible things today. Um, swing and a miss. Strike three. Gorman is out number one. Without that, it would have been Colin Ray today for sure. But because of some stats that are just special stats for big league players, they really are. Pete Curl Armstrong hit his 30th home run today. That’s a big number. 30 home runs, 30 stolen bases, and 30 doubles. The only Cub to ever do that. And then also Sea Suzuki with 30 home runs and now 101 RBI’s on a grand slam. They will be our toast to the game ball player by Vegas. That’s a good call. Thomas Sajci, the batter takes ball one. Cubs leading by 10 runs here in the ninth inning. You don’t see a whole lot of blowouts between the Cubs and Cardinals, either here or in St. Louis. Usually, they go right down to the last batter. This pitch is in there for a strike. Two and one. That’s why it’s become such a classic rivalry. Zarang calling for an ID. He he added the syllables alicious after the ID request. Just wanted to report that. Uhhuh. He’s kind of got Alicious on the mind. Yes, he does. Whatever that might mean. And here comes the 3-1 pitch on the way to S JC. And it’s in there for a strike. Three and two. We’ll get you that ID right after this next pitch or pitchalicious I guess we could call it. Here comes the 3-2 swing and a miss. Right. Three, 10 for ID. This is the score in the Southwest Airlines Cubs Radio Network. Take the Cubs with you in the Chicagoland area on the free Odyssey app. We are the Southwest Airlines Cubs Radio Network, WSCR Chicago, WBMX HD2 Chicago, and Odyssey Sports Station. Please stay tuned for Zack Zman’s postgame show, the Verizon postgame show. Zack preparing that show right now. Pedro Pahes pops it up. This is going to do it. Cubs are going to move to within one. Magic number caught by Swanson in shallow center. Ball game is over. Cubs win it easily 12 to one. The Magic Number down to one to clench the top wild card spot and thereby being the home team for the entire best of three series starting next Tuesday against San Diego. So, a big day and a big win here at Wrigley today, Ron. And the fans who came thoroughly enjoyed the action from the very beginning of the ball game. Colin Ray has a quick one, two, three inning. Nico her with a home run right away in the first inning. A blast to center. All Cubs today. Big home runs by Pete, by Suzuki, by Bushy. Uh just a great great Cubs effort today. And now this is three games in a row. Even though the Cubs, you know, haven’t won all those games. Three really good offensive days in a row. And the other important part, Kyle Tucker looked very good today playing. He DH today, got him a hit and but looked good swinging the bat and looks like he’s on the right track. Certainly a lot of positives, Ron. Speaking of positives, Bruce Levine is down in the Cubs third base dugout and he’s going to get one of the Cubs and I think he is ready to go right now. Or maybe not. the Bruce.
