Why Vasily Podkolzin’s Contract Could Be A Steal For The Edmonton Oilers
Basil Pud Coulson in the emitted Oilers is agreeing to terms on a 3year extension. Now again important to note the word extension. This contract does not kick in until next season. This year Pud Coulson is making $1 million, but for the three years after that, which covers two years of him being an RFA and one of him being a UFA, which probably explains the the jump in cap hit in this one. You are buying a UFA year out of Aili Pod Coulson, but it’s a three-year deal at $2.95 million. This is a guy in Pod Coulson who was one of the better surprises on this roster last year. He didn’t light the world on fire point-wise. Eight goals, 16 assists, 24 points. All of them coming at uh at even strength, no power play points, no short-handed points. He also had two game-winning goals. Um, I think it’s very easy to see why this is a player the Oilers were not just comfortable to commit to, but I’d say excited to commit to. They went out and didn’t want to see him play this season, they wanted to get it, they wanted to get him locked in before this year. Yes, he spent a lot of time with Leon Dry settle last year. I totally understand that. And to look at a guy who played a lot with Leon who only scored eight goals, you could kind of be like, ah, did he really deliver in that top six spot? But by committing to him before this season and maybe this is a year where he plays with Leon Dryetttle a lot, you just give yourself a chance for this contract to become a value deal. I think there is a world where Pod Coulson routinely scores north of 15 goals and gets close to 20 goals. And if he would have done that this upcoming season and you said, “Ah, let’s wait. Let’s see if he proves it.” Next July, what’s this contract costing? Probably 4 million bucks a year. If he pops this year, it will be expensive. By doing this, you give yourself a chance for the contract to become a true value deal for you at some point. I Yeah, I completely agree. I think everyone’s pretty The opinions out there yesterday didn’t seem to really stray outside of like we all like Pod Cole and he just needs to produce a little bit more and I think that’s totally fair. You got to remember to like the start of last season, how long did it take him to score a goal for a long time. Like obviously another if, but like if he gets going early in the season, like maybe he can kind of get his his feet moving cuz Yeah. Like and that’s what you want to see from him. I thought he performed well in the playoffs. I think when you go back and look through some of the contracts that have been handed out last few years as well, like it measured up measures up pretty well honestly. Some of the guys like and I know like cap changes and all this, but like Alex Keroot got three and a half million a few years ago. Simon Holmstrom got 3.65. 65 like who would you rather have on your team? I’d probably rather have pod calls than other money he’s he’s the others have put on. So I think there’s just there’s a lot of potential to be really positive deal for Edmonton. And now when you look at it too what is he 20 25 next summer. Yeah. So they have Pod Coulson Howard and Seavoy all under 24 years old 24 or younger signed up for the next three four years include Frederick who’s 27 in that mix. like you’re starting to see who the Oilers are and again it’s not the main yeah the main core is Connor Leon Bouch right but there’s now this sort of undercurrent of players that the organization has identified as quality support pieces and they’re locking them in at a time where the cap will continue to skyrocket so by year 2 three of this Pud Coulson deal you might be looking at a guy who you’re like a lock really good top nine guy and he’s only 3 million bucks and you brought up Holstrom as a comparable an interesting one cuz he scored 15 and and 20 goals in the last two years. He’s he he’s done what we’re hoping Pod Cozen can do. But what was Homestöm’s deal? 3.65. 3.65. 700,000 more than Pod Coen. And I think he can get to that level of being a 20 goal guy at some point. Um I love this deal. Again, we bitched about the Bushard thing. We’ve done our bitching about the nurse thing about how yeah, when you don’t take a risk on a player, you never get to reap the benefits of it, right? You end up just having to pay market value all the time. If you want guys on your team who are well below market value, you either have to strike gold in a Zack Heyman or something like that or you need to do this. You need to take a chance. You need to sign Trent Frederick to an 8-year deal. You need to sign Basil Pod goes into a three-year deal. And you know what? Sometimes it’s going to blow up in your face and it’s not going to look good. Sometimes, again, it will end up being a tremendous piece of value. Like, you have to take risks like this. And I think we can all look at Pod Coulson and go, even in a year where he did not produce, he found a way to be an effective top nine winger. I paid $2.9 million for that every day of the week. I would too, especially if he can become a regular on the penalty kill this season as well. Southpaw put in their pod calls and led dealers in hits and was second in shots amongst for uh shot blocks, sorry, amongst forwards. There was a burning question yesterday and Colin threw it in the chat as well. You could all uh it’s gone up a little bit. It doesn’t matter what it looks like. Basically, what he’s saying have pod calls and I I don’t think anyone would argue that. I think at the moment even I said I was like Pod Coulson is not a Holloway replacement. He just fills a bit of a gap. Where did this conversation start? Like how did this become a narrative that in some way the Oilers chose Pud Coulson over Holloway? Like Yeah, that’s true. They I I get they’re connected because Pud Coulson was acquired right after they didn’t match. So like there is a little bit of a connection here but like this upcoming season Pud Coulson is making 1.3 million less than Holloway. Yeah. the 1 million he makes. Yeah. And next year, Holloway is going to be at six. Honestly, like I was thinking about this yesterday. What did Jackson Blake get? You know what I mean? Like Jackson Blake was signed to Summers. Wasn’t Stanovven just take a big deal? There was another player as well. I’m forgetting his name. Another younger guy who was still at a year of Jackson Stanovven got six and Jackson Blake got Why can’t I see is he hurt right now? Why can’t I see him on Carolina’s Puckia? I don’t know. Either way, Jackson Blake had 34 points last season. Yeah. And he got a really big extension. 5.1 is what Jackson Blake got. Okay. So, Holloway’s better than both those guys. Hollow’s probably getting six and a half. Maybe seven. Honestly, like if he has a great year this year, he might get 7 million. And Dylan Holloway, again, the Oilers should have matched on Dylan Hollow%. This is not me defending that decision. Dylan Holloway should still be an Oiler. He’s not because they prioritized Arvidson and Skinner over him. If they didn’t sign Arverton Skinner, they would have had the money for Holloway. If they would have known that Evander Kane was going to be out all season, which maybe Vander Kane could have given them some more clear messaging, maybe the organization should have been better prepared. They could have had the money for Dylan Holloway. Pud Coulson’s $1 million was not, you know what, let’s not match Dylan Holloway because Facility Pud Coulson’s here. No, no, it it was an Arvdson Skinner thing. If anything, I actually give Bowman credit for after not matching Holloway. He didn’t just sit there and go, “All right, well, we have our guys. We’re good.” He went and said, “You know what? We should still add some youth to this organization. What’s up, nation citizens? The Edmonton Oilers locking up Vasily Podkolzin could turn out to be one of the smartest moves of the offseason. The young winger is already showing flashes of being a reliable two-way presence with the potential to grow into a consistent offensive contributor. If he continues to develop the way many expect, his new contract will look like a bargain compared to what similar players are making around the league.
Tyler and Liam break down why Podkolzin’s extension could be a steal, how his role with the Oilers might expand this season, and what kind of long-term impact he could have on the roster. They also discuss how his deal helps Edmonton’s cap situation and why securing him now is a big win for the organization.
What do you think of Podkolzin’s extension?
