🔴LIVE 🔴New York Mets VS Chicago Cubs/September 25/ Envivo Tv /MLB THE SHOW 25
Perfect night for baseball on the show. It’s the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs. First pitch coming your way next. [Applause] [Music] just about to get underway. And the pitcher for this one, Matthew Boyd. What do you look for here? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate. And that one fouled off. First pitch 640. Fought off. Foul and ball one. Really good take especially with two strikes. Foul ball still a one and two count. flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the at bat alive. A short stop, takes a ball, struck him out looking. That was pretty nasty. Well, that’ll make you smile out there on the mound or maybe pump out your chest a little bit farther. That’s about as good of a back door curveball as you’ll ever see. right on the black and not surprisingly just locked him up in the box and now it’s Juan Sodto. Another solid power season and a breaking ball misses outside. Boyd in his ninth season, he features a four seam fast, a change up, a slider, a curb, and he works in a sinker. swung on, belted, and that gets down in the corner. And that’s a double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle, allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer, and he hit the ball on the screws. So the go-ahead run in scoring position and now it’s the polar bear Pete Lonzo. Pitch misses there. One and0, one out and a runner at second. Swinging a foul out of play. Two in one. Squirts away a little bit. Man at second. Swing and a ball driven out to center. That one’s back there. Gone. And they jump out front. It’s two nothing. It’s no surprise this guy has won the home run derby multiple times. He was born to hit him. [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Base is empty, one away. Here’s Starling Marte. He had a foul ball. One out. Base is empty. This one in the air right field. Suzuki moving under it and that is a foul ball. just outside and that’s ball one. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. He goes down looking. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. Two outs, space is empty, and now it’s Mark Vientos. There’s the strike. Two outs. Base is empty. He swings and fouls one off. The O2 check swing. Tried to hold up. Now an appeal to first. No swing. One and two here. And there’s a ball. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Next offering is outside. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. 3-2 on the way. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball, but missed the spot. It’s been a little bit of a shaky inning, but he’s still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs. He’s just got to turn the page and go after this next guy. Here’s Brandon NMO and first offering is fouled off. Come on, Matthew. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Ground ball up the middle. Her over to first and that is that. Mets add two runs on this blast. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Back here at the friendly confines and on the mound now, David Peterson. Chris, how about a scouting report? Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad, but I think in this one, he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that wind up instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch, he’s going to get a swing and miss, get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball. Left-hand hitter waits a little roller up along first and a foul ball. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. And that skips in the dirt. And down on strikes he goes. And one away. Nico her will come up to hit. A former first round pick and he’s really turned into a nice everyday player. Ripped on a line. Two away. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup. This team collectively, Chris, the batto ball skills are outstanding. They lead the league in total hits coming in. Yeah, Boog. I I wouldn’t want to be a pitcher who’s got to face this lineup. I mean, every spot in the order dangerous. Really professional hitters that walk to the dish. I mean, they just don’t give away at bats. Ton of contact. You know, these fielders behind this pitcher, they better be on their toes because the ball is going to be in play a whole lot. Yeah. When the ball is in play, at least from an offensive perspective, eventually something good can happen. Next pitch is outside. Hap lays off. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. Whips it to first. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Cubs are down quietly. They trail it here. Two nothing. Top of the second. And here’s the catcher, Francisco Alvarez. Alvarez. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Boy, back to work. That one fouled off. You come into the game knowing that unless the ball’s in the dirt or gets by him, we’re probably not going to steal anything today. So, that’s where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary. Now, this down the right field line. Fair ball. Should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s got a leadoff double. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. runner in scoring position, no outs. And now here’s Jeff McNeel. First pitch misses. Well, I’ll say this. As a former position player and base steeler, when you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Chicago. And ball four, two aboard. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Tyrone Taylor. First and second, no outs. Tyrone Taylor up now for the Mets. Line drive and it goes just foul. Breaking ball misses down and away. Our plate umpire Earl Hris. Yeah, with Hendrickx boo kind of interesting. He’s a good consistent umpire, but you do hear that he kind of favors one side of the plate more than the other. So, it’s really hard to know for sure, but I think that usually it has to do something with where he sets up prior to each pitch. Alvarez at second. McNeel at first with no outs. And a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. Back to the top of the Mets order. Francisco Lindor up now for the Mets. Struck out looking his first time. [Music] Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. Home run number 30 on the year and they throw three on the board. It’s five zip. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Well, he went up there o looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. Woo now doubled in his first AB. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left on the mound. He’s got to remember his offense can score a lot. So if he can hit the reset button from here going forward, there’s still a chance that his club can win this ball game. And that one missing low. Next offering is fouled back. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Two down, base is empty. Pete Alonzo up now for the Mets. He’s already homerred in this game. That one off the mark and that’s ball one. And it’s fouled away. That one catches the zone and the count is one and two. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across here in the top of the second. Just off the inside corner and it’s two and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Two outs. That one ripped. Crow Armstrong ranges back and it’s into the bleachers out of here. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 6 nothing. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Matthew Boyd won’t go any further and the home run really bit him today as he exits on the hook for the loss. New arm coming on after the break. Shota Ianaga on the pitch out of the pen here. Well, they need someone to stop the bleed and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it. Starling Marte up to hit. He’s over for one and first offering is fouled off. And a swing and a miss there. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Cade Horton up and throwing for manager Craig Council. [Applause] [Music] drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and that gets down into the gap around first heading for two. Tag and he’s safe. It’s a hustle double. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. As soon as that one shot off his barrel, he was thinking extra bases. really nice job of getting the bat out front but not hooking around it or rolling over it. Just kept the swing on plane and smoked that thing into the gap. So, a man aboard now. Mark Vientos worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. [Music] swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Runner at second. Two down. Next offering misses and it’s two and two. [Music] cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. But two round tripers in this inning, the long ball was working. It’s now a six nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the inning and now the DH. Moyesis Bayisterosis fouls one off out of play. Back to our left and that one hammered back there. That one is gone. a solo shot. Third home run of the season and they cut into the lead. It’s 6-1. Well, there goes the shut out. Just like that. They’re still behind, but this is a start. [Applause] When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast ball. And now it’s going to be Seiya Suzuki. Fast for a strike. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. There’s a swing and a drive. That one ops against the fence safely into second. He’s got a double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. Not getting the results he’s wanted at the plate recently. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. That’s in there. man at second. Line to left. NMO makes the catch and there’s one away. Batty seven, center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. Pete Crow Armstrong now at the plate. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. And another ball after giving up that home run earlier. Just doesn’t seem like he wants to challenge him. And that one clips the corner. And that one fouled off. One out and a runner at second. Bottom half of inning number two. That one drilled left field way back there. That’s long gone. It’s their second home run of the inning and they’re chipping away. It’s 6-3. [Applause] Got to keep that front shoulder closed and your body square to the plate, especially when you’re facing a left-hander. He did all those things until the very last moment where that hip just popped. Hands came through. Nice little lag to it. Carried out nicely. One out. Base is empty. Swanson digs in. The shorts stop. Takes a ball. Next pitch is outside. Peterson. Maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in Oh, nice stop and a slide over to first. Nicely done for the out. Well, Boo, as an infielder, you have to be ready for anything. In that spot, it required going to the ground, getting a little dirty, and making a strong throw for the out. Great play. So, up now for Chicago, Matt Shaw. That misses the zone. And that is ball one. out to center. Taylor settles under this one. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. And that is that. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working and they’ve doubled up now. It’s 63. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back. Here’s the left fielder, Brandon NMO. Brandon NMO. Just missed. Well, these Mets really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They’ve got to be happy with the six runs they’ve thrown on the board. That’s usually enough offense to win you the game. So, they just have to keep doing what they’re doing. That one misses. And now 3 and 0. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Swinging a ground ball in time to Bush. One up, one down. Now batting catcher Francisco Alvarez. Francisco Alvarez up now for the Mets. One for one with a double and a run scored right through there for a strike. That one’s in there. 0 and two now. and misses inside. Fights that one away. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Here we go. In the air, left field. H puts it away for the out. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. Jeff McNeel. Two outs. Base is empty. Jeff McNeel stands in. A walk and a run scored his first time. And a foul ball. Swinging a foul straight back. This one high in the air to left center. Crow Armstrong moves after it. And that is that. And welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the Cubs leadoff man. Michael Bush in there at the knees. That’s strike one. You know, these Cubs doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. It’s tough to remember the times they’ve actually swung and missed at a pitch because it really hasn’t happened. They’ve made contact on nearly 100% of their swings. That one hammered center field. That’s back. And that one’s gone into the bleachers. And they inch closer. It’s 64. That swing just injected more drama into this one. [Applause] Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. So, here’s her now. And that is out of play. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning up the middle. Oh, great stop. Throws from his knees. It’s there and that’s a great play. Well, you can see right there he looks very comfortable going to the backhand. Nice diving stop. Gets up to complete the play. That’ll fire the team up for sure. Ian Hap up to hit. Grounded out. His first time up and that misses ball one. One ball. No strike. Lifted in the air. Right field. And there are two down. Now batting the designated hitter. Two down. Base is empty. Now it’ll be the Cubs DH. Moises by Asteros. He’s already homered here in this one. Outside corner for a strike. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. Lindor on to first. That’s out number three. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s a two-run lead now at 64. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. out of the fourth. And now here’s the speed threat outfielder Tyrone Taylor. [Music] Taylor in his fifth season, 31 years old, and he was a second round pick back in 2012. Tried to check his swing there. Now an appeal to first. That’s a swing according to umpire Woody Keller. 0 and2 now and they’ll do it again. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So, I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff boring in on his hands. Back to the top of the lineup now. Up to Francisco Lindor. Ball one there. One down. Base is empty. And that one pulled foul. Right side hard hit. Bush takes it to the bag. Two up, two down. Up next for the Mets, the designated hitter, Juan Sto. Two out, space is empty. Here’s Juan Sodto. One for two. And there’s the strike. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is fouled back. Here’s the O2. in the air fairly deep to right field. Makes the catch in and over. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Mets six and the Cubs four here at Wrigley Field. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Seya Suzuki. Cubbies. Come on, Cubbies. That one ripped right center field. That’s back. It bangs off the wall in safely with a double. his second of the day. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Pitch was away and he did exactly what you’re supposed to do with it. Drive it the other way. Just go with the pitch. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Kelly digs in now. 0 for one so far. Fast ball for a strike. Suzuki stands at second with no outs. Next pitch is outside and that one fouled off. [Music] keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Man at second. That’s down and in. [Music] swing and a ball lined out towards center. Dives, but it falls and now it looks like extra bases. Suzuki around third. He’ll score easily. Marte gets it in quickly and the stop sign goes up at third on the potential tying run. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline. It pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. [Applause] runner at third. Nobody out. Crow Armstrong will hit next. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. That one finds the zone. Strike one. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. That’s a strike. And the count is 0 and2. Action in the Mets bullpen. Number 21. The rookie righthander is getting loose. Holmes getting cranked up as well. Runner at third. Nobody out. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Applause] And that one is inside ball one. Very close pitch there. And that was a big one. Clearly, he thought he got the inside corner on the mound. And he’s showing his frustration a little bit. [Applause] Goes down looking. Oh, nice job right there. He struck him out twice. The pitch before looked like it was strike three. doesn’t get the call. Bears down. Throws another quality pitch for the strikeout. Dansby Swanson stands in. Grounded out his first time. Just missed. That’s a ball. One. [Applause] One away with a runner at third. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. That’s outside now. Two balls in a strike. [Applause] And downstairs, Matt Shaw in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] [Applause] Good job to fight that one off. [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Fouled off again and it remains three and two up the middle. Oh, look at the stop to first and very nicely done for the out. Well, he still gets the RBI, but that was a really nice play. Great athleticism. You get an out and you take away the base hit. [Applause] Tied at six. Matt Shaw, the next Cub to hit. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Ball game is still tied. they can get out of this inning with a tie game. Two down. Slice down the right side [Music] and down on strikes. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. They get two and draw even again. We’re headed to the fifth and we’re all even at six apiece. Back here at Wrigley Field all set for the start of the inning. Here’s Pete Alonzo. Alonsozo Shota back to work. just missed. Well, these Mets putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. There’s the swinging a miss. And a swing and a miss. One away. Usually when you see several pitches, you’re going to get at least one that you might be able to do something with, but they didn’t exactly challenge him in any way right there. And really, they just used his aggressiveness against him. I don’t think he even got a pitch in the zone. No, that’s a good point, Sigy. He goes down on strikes, but not a single pitch was actually in the strike zone. tied at six. Now it’s the right fielder, Starling Marte. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Here we go. Just missed. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished a little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout on the ground right side and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting third base Mark Ventos. Mark Vientos the next to hit. He is struck out and he is walked. And first offering is fouled off. All tied up. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And a swing and a miss. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Mets go down quickly. This game remains tied at six. Back here at the friendly confines. And now the first baseman, Michael Bush. Michael Bush. And there’s a foul ball. You know, these Cubs showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. The numbers say their chase rate or swings at pitches outside the zone is under 25%. And I think it’s a big reason why they’re scoring runs. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. By not chasing out of the zone, they’re getting good pitches to hit. When you can do that, you have a much better chance to square up the baseball and do damage like they have so far. Come on, Michael. Let’s go. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Now he breaks his bat. One up, one down. Now batting second base. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. David Peterson out of the game. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching. Number 21 into the game. 21. Still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap, that starter left for him. Here’s Nico her bowl for two in this one. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. That’s in there. One and one. That big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit. Looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate. Taylor hauls it in and there’s two away now. Batting leftiel and here is in half. Highfly ball out towards left field and a foul ball. Foul ball. Swinging a foul straight back. The O2 knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That’s out to center field. Taylor sizes this one up and that will end the inning. And we’re back now. The left fielder Brandon NMO a little bit high and it’s one and0 activity in the bullpen. Javier Assad up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Soka warming up as well. [Music] That one finds the zone and it’s one and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Next offering in there for a strike. Yeah, the count one and two. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Got him. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. And I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Tied at six. And now the catcher comes up to him. Francisco Alvarez. Fast ball is outside. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Swinging a foul back. And that’s out of play. One down, base is empty. Foul ball there. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. No messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there. Four pitches, all fast balls. Yeah, and that makes me think that was the plan before the at bat even started. If you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast, why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it? So, up next, Jeff McNeel and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Music] the other way and that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second. He’s there. It’s a two out double. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. So, runner at second, two down. Taylor getting ready to hit who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. First pitch and he just misses. One ball, no strike. Hit hard on the ground to short. Swanson fires over to first and that is the inning. So, one hit is all they get. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up and we’re all even at six apiece. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the DH Moises Bayister. That one missed. Stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Oscar Brazan appears to be getting loose. Sodto the power lefty up as well. [Music] to the right side. McNeel tosses to first. One away. Bottom of the six. Now batting right. And next for the Cubs, Seiya Suzuki drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. out towards left center. Taylor ranging after it, carous. And that quickly two away. Now batting catcher Carson. Now the Cubs catcher Carson Kelly popped up. McNeel hauls it in to end the inning and the Cubs are down in order. So we’re still tied at six. a new arm into the game, the righty Javier Assad. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So, back to the top of the order. Now, it’s the shortstop, Francisco Lindor. Assad in his third season, 27 years old and he’s a native of Mexico line and a base hit into right. So, a man on base to start the inning. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. Go ahead run on base. Juan Sodto up now for the Mets. Pickoff throw. Lindor back in there. in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. Outside low and one and one. Way to lay off that pitch down. Going to count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Good eye right there. That’s a really good take. Stays alive with the go-ahad run at first here in the top half of inning number seven. gets a piece and stays alive. Misses and the count’s full on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. So, a walk puts runners at first and second. And with two outs, the go-ahead run is at second base. Pete Alonsozo. And next for the Mets, Pete Alonzo. He’s got a couple homers already, so can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit, and he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Good pitch right there. Anytime you can get one by a bat of this caliber, especially with runners on, it’s got to give you some confidence out there on the mound that you can win this battle. [Applause] Lindor the lead runner at second. Sodto on out at first with nobody out. Foul ball still 0 and two. And that’s down and away. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. That’s inside. Missed inside with the curve. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. Starling Marte in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. 3-2 now on the ground to the left. They put the tag on him and that’s two. Next is the cleanup hitter for the Mets, Starling Marte. One for three. Yeah, that’s fouled off. No, that’s out. Next pitch misses and it’s two and one. Two down. Go ahead run and scoring position. comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. That completes the strikeout. Inning over. Mets leave one. Score remains tied six apiece here at Wrigley Field. Bottom of the seventh. Leading off Pete Crow Armstrong. Pete Crow Armstrong. outside with a breaking ball. [Music] That misses the zone. Ball two. And that one a little bit high. [Applause] It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahehead run. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. Oh, with pretty good speed over there at first base. I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down. Hold the ball a little bit, step off, just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base dealer. And that is in for a strike. 0 and one. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Inside corner for a strike. 0 and two. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. And there’s a ball. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here [Applause] on the ground. Could be two to second for one. Over to Alonzo. Double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Tied at six. And up next for Chicago, Matt Shaw. Pitch misses there. One and0. [Music] cut on and lifted in the air. McNeel in pursuit. That is the inning. Mike Sroa gets the call from the pen. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Mark Vientos now at the plate. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. That one hooked. Foul. That one misses and now it’s even one and one to comes bullpen with some action. Brad Keller up and throwing and a count one and two in there. Sets him down on strikes. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Oh, tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. Tied at six. Brandon NMO digs in now. Top of the zone for a called strike. That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball one. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Hit in the air out to center field. Crow Armstrong should have it. He makes the catch and there’s two down. [Applause] Now batting catcher Francisco. And here is Francisco Alvarez. Pitch is in the dirt and that’s ball one. And that drops in for a strike. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Hard hit left side in time to Bush. That’s the third out. Nothing across here this half. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. And we’re all even at six apiece. Now back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Gregory Sodto. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Michael Bush getting ready to hit. Michael Bush. There’s the strike. And a big swing and a miss. [Music] That one misses. Now one and two. Really nice slider right there. Sweeping across the dish but just couldn’t hang the edge. Line drive. Base hit. off to a good start with a leadoff knock. Everything came together for him. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. No outs, runner at first. So up now for Chicago, Nicoer, known for his late inning heroics. Strike on the inside corner and one. Well, they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. Now one and one. Action in the pen down there. Oscar Brazan, the young right-hander up and throwing. and fouled off. [Applause] With a go ahead run at first here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That one misses. And now it’s three and two. [Applause] That one down the line. And foul ball. Ground ball. Could be two. Off-balance feed. There’s one. How about that double play? Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Ian Hat. 0 for three in this one. Out of the corner for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Two outs. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball way inside. Gets out of the way. Nope. Chicago. Moises bysteros in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] Chicago outside and that is ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Sodto checks over to first and he’s back by Esteros up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. [Applause] That’s the ball at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] Now that’s smacked to right center. Makes a nice running catch and that’s the inning. One left for the Cubs. It’s the ninth and we are tied. back now and on the mound the closer Brad Keller. And he’s been fantastic this year. Really stingy in terms of allowing base runners. He’s just got great stuff that’s tough to square up. Tied at six. Now it’s the second baseman, Jeff McNeel. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Fought off foul. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That missed by a lot and the count is even. Two and two. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Tyrone Taylor in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] Ball four. He walked him and that’ll keep the line moving. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Go ahead run on base. Tyrone Taylor will hit next. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Lays down a bunt to the right side and that’s a foul ball. shortened the bun and missed it. And it’s 0 and two. Just couldn’t get that one down. And it’s really just about catching the ball with the bat. And that’s too high movement in the Cubs bullpen. Caleb Thebar up and throwing for manager Craig Council. [Music] battling here as he fouls it away with a go-ahad run at first here in the top of the ninth. Fouls it off. Still one and two. That smash towards center. Brings it in. And there’s one down. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. Here’s Francisco Lindor. And that is out of play. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Tap dances out of the way of that one. time. That’s a ball. And that one fouled off. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Just off the outside edge. Three and two now. Juan Sodto in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] And a foul ball. He stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that’s Will the swing. It’s a strike out. Unafraid to throw it right there. That’s trusting your stall. Just one out away from getting out of a huge jam. Juan Sodto the next to hit. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Let’s go. Swings through that one out in front that time. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, hitters aren’t touched. Next offering is down low. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. Fights it off. You’ll see another. Two outs. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. That one way inside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Got him looking. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. So, no runs in the inning despite the leadoff walk. And that does it. Five, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. And we’re all even at six a piece. Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Oscar Brazel. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So, command and execution are huge for him. Suzuki can’t hold up. And that’s a strike. Here we go. [Music] That misses the zone and the count one and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. The one two that’s down and in. [Music] gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] That one almost got him. You got this. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Kelly the next to hit takes low for a ball. Winning run on base at first. No outs. [Applause] Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Squeezes it and there’s one down. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit, and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Now it’s going to be Pete Crow Armstrong. Inside and that is ball one. And another ball. Got to be real careful here. Two. He’s hunting for his pitch. One down. Winning run on to first. Down the line. And it’s foul. Next offering is in for a strike. little bouncer out in front of the plate. Two away. Now batting the short stop. And here comes Dansby Swanson. Oh, how he’d love to walk it off right here. Come on. You can do it. Come on. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Winning run and scoring position with two away. [Applause] Swings and misses. Now he’s in a one-two hole. trying to send this to extra innings. Ripped to short, throws to first in time and Swanson is set down. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. So, they can’t come up with the winning run. And that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. And we’re all even at six apiece. Back now, we’re in extras. And there’s a new arm on the mound. Caleb Thebar. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone. makes hitters earn their way on base and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. So, digging in, Pete Alonzo. Oh, look out here. He’s going to come up ready to swing in this situation. Right through there for a strike. Late in the game, everyone gets a little tighter. Way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there. one. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Man at second and a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and that’s the first out. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at second. Mets going with a pinch runner. Luis Anel Akuna. And now Starling Marte one for four with a double. off the plate inside. Ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Taylor Rogers up and throwing for manager Craig Council. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Gets the call and the count even at one. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Next pitch is downstairs. And that one missing low. Mark Vientos in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And ball four, two aboard. Oh, looking for a swinging miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch. but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. So, up next, Mark Vientos and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there, One ball, two strike. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count. One, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Got him. And he’s gone for the fourth time tonight. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go-ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. Now, here is Brandon NMO 0 for four. Two ground outs, a fly out, and a strikeout. just missed with the go-ahead run. Standing at second here in the top half of the 10th swinging a foul out of play. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. in the dirt. Nothing happening on the bases though. Akuna on second. Marte on first with two down. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Now one out to right. Suzuki on the move. Makes the grab and that’s the third out. Back here at Wrigley Field. On to the bottom of the tenth. Now here is Matt Shaw. Now this guy a player that if he gets on base has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. Brazed hard but fouled. [Music] hit hard on the ground is short. Tossed to Alonzo. And here in the 10th, the leadoff man is out. Michael Bush, the next cup to hit. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk him, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up outside and it’s one and0. One away. The winning run at second. Slice the other way and foul. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Runner around third on his way to the plate. In comes the winning run and the Cubs walk it off in extra innings. You know, he had to feel the pressure. Winning run on second base. found a way to make solid contact and the winning run comes across to score. Everyone going crazy. Exciting finish to this game today. one-run game here today. Your final score, 7 to6. So, the Cubs celebrate at the plate for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shi saying so long.
