Jeremiah Fears on Pelicans rookies, learning from vets | Pelicans Training Camp 2025

Oh. So, how has everything been this first week? Everything’s been great. Um, just getting our feet wet. Uh, me, Micah, and Derek, we the rookies, so we knew new new to everything, but just continuing to learn and just take everything day by day and step by step and trying to fill out the coaches a little more. I mean, we got some new some some new faces here. So, just trying to figure them out and understand our system. What’s been the level of intensity? Is it been faster paced, a lot more work? Kind of how do you gauge that? Uh, I would definitely say a lot more competitive. I feel like everybody’s been getting after it. We’ve been going at each other, been talking a little bit and just pushing each other to get better. I know it’s a long season. We about to play against some really good guys. So, we just trying to get each other ready for what’s about to come. Jerem, we know you’re a very confident individual regardless of how old you are. Have you been though picking anybody’s brain throughout this training camp thus far? Yeah, for sure. Uh, I’ve been talking to Jordan a little bit. He’s been giving me a lot of great advice and just continuing to kind of um be that help and that older guy that you need to kind of be in your ear and give you every little piece of advice that you think that you need. What’s it been like to come into a team where there’s like so many other point guards that have had success in the NBA and kind of can maybe go and it seems like they’re all different type of guys too with Jordan and Deonte and Jose. Yep. It’s been great. Um just continuing to learn from all of them. Like you said, they all have different games. So, I think just continuing to listen and pick their brain and continuing to watch more film on their game as well and trying to see what I can take from their game, add to my game, and just continuing to talk and be on that same page because we the point guard, so we going to have to be the voice of the team. You mentioned trying to get to know the coaches, the players a little bit better. Anyone that surprised you so far? Uh, I’ll say Sadique. Uh, Sadique brings a lot to our team this year. Shoot the ball really well. um really nice frame and he can rebound and he could guard as well. So I think Sadiq I would I would definitely say Sadi uh surprised me the most this far. What have you seen from uh Micah Pave so far? Maybe both ends of the floor. Man, Micah um he can shoot the ball off the catch. He can put the ball on the floor. He crashes the glass really hard and um he’s a tough nose on defense and he’s somebody that you want on your team. He’s going to go out there compete and he going to try to guard everybody’s best player as well. Anytime we ask someone about you, they they talk about uh being impressed by your your maturity and your competitiveness and skill level at 18. How much pride do you take in that? Oh, I mean I I appreciate uh my teammates talking so well and so highly of me. Um but just continuing to take everything uh day by day and continuing to keep learning. That’s going to be the biggest thing for me. Like you said, being 18, you you know a lot but you don’t know everything. So continuing to keep learning, keep asking everybody questions. Are you excited for your birthday in a couple weeks? You’re one great team. Yes, sir. You have a lot of talented teammates with the ball. Um what’s been the adjustment for you? Like, let’s say if if someone else has the ball in their hand, like what’s been the focus for you when you’re off the ball? Uh just continuing to um move without the ball and trying to find my put myself in the right position and just continuing to to learn from other guys, other point guards such as Jordan. Um he’s played off the ball a couple years of his career. So, just continuing to watch him and watch the way he moves without the ball and watch the way he get a ball up and continue to keep moving and get everybody else involved as well. Did they have any set back screens and stuff? Yeah, they got me set some back screens. They got me um swinging the ball, moving out the ball, a couple cuts, quick cuts, couple flare screens and stuff like that. Have you had any lops? Zion, anything like that? Man, I’ve had two so far, but I’m I’m looking forward to a couple more in the season. Uh it’s going to be a really really cool experience and I know he’s one of a one of a kind athletic as well. What was it like playing playing and practicing with Zion picking it up after, you know, watching him from so long? I mean, it’s great. Uh, he brings a lot to the table. He really contributes on both ends of the court and he’s somebody that you can learn from. He’s our captain, obviously. So, we just continue to learn and asking questions as well. Have you been a little surprised about like some of these younger guys, uh, you know, they’re 25, 26, how much of a leadership role they’ve taken on with y’all? Yeah, I mean, it’s it’s different. Um, usually other teams have a couple vets that’s 36, 37. Our vets is more 28 29. So just being able to learn from them and I mean they they’ve been doing this for a long time. So obviously they got some knowledge and we got a couple guys that won some NBA championship. So ask some questions and just continue to build our chemistry. Does it help to relate to them with them being so close? It does. It actually does. Um them being close to your age, they kind of relate to uh kind of what you went through and what you’re going through because they didn’t they did it but it wasn’t that long ago. So, I mean, just continuing to do what you do and like I said, ask everybody questions cuz they all you can learn something from every singlebody on our team. Have you figured out how you’re going to spend uh 20 hours on a on a flight? I haven’t. That’s a long flight. Uh I’m thinking sleep a little bit and then I downloaded some movies, but I mean no Wi-Fi. I’ll probably say sleep, sleep a lot, recover, and definitely watch some movies. try to try to watch a little bit of YouTube, download some videos if it let me. Who do you watch on YouTube? Uh, I really watch I watch a lot of basketball. Rico Hans. Um, I watch some games from the past couple years and just I really watch a lot of basketball when I get on
