Minnesota Vikings News Dump (8.27.2025) | First 53 Man Roster Set, SEVEN UDFAs, Impasse with Thielen

[Music] What’s going on, Jeromes? So, the biggest story of the day yesterday was the engagement of the Vikings trimming down to the 53man rooster. All right, let’s go on Jerome Romes. Uh, it’s a beautiful Wednesday. Birds are chirping stuff. It’s time for another Vikings news dump. So Quy and the Cook Casy and the Vikes uh got down to the 53man rooster and the the one standout was seven CITe UDFAs making the rooster quarterback Max Bromer as well as guard jumping Joe Huber, Elijah Williams along the Dline, Miles Price return specialist Chad Shamble Lee playing his balls off. Love to see that as well as uh Austin Keys and as well as tight end Ben Ursk. So basically there were a couple surprises, right? So I mean the Viking, you say this about Quazy, he does not sleep when it comes to turning and burning this roster and making some moves and finding some grooves and all that stuff. So offensively, you know, three quarterbacks on the 53. McCarthy bromer is actually listed second. Now does that mean anything? Don’t know. Uh it could mean it could mean something once you get into the season when you have to designate emergency third quarterback if you want to save a game day 46 or was it game day 47 now depending on spot uh blah blah blah but who’s going to be quarterback three right Ty Chandler I don’t know if Ty Chandler is going to be along for this uh for this 53 because a couple things stand out before we get to it there there will be a lot of changes as the Vikings will add a wide receiver or cornerback it’s inevitable you know second wave of waiverss could be a factor So, the Vikings may hold on to a player on the 53 after waiver is processed tomorrow and or today. Uh, and then all of a sudden that player is waved and the teams are like, “Drat, we we we already put together a waiver claims and then the Vikings get them down to the practice.” A little bit dirty business because like such an emotional roller coaster. I don’t know if I’m going to make the team. I made the team. No, I’m just kidding. Yeah. Uh, Brosmer quarterback, too. Also, it doesn’t matter where you’re drafted. You know, just what doesn’t matter if you’re a first round pick, undrafted, how much your salary is. If you’re a dog, you’re a dog. And the Vikings have put together a team of dogs, man. Yeah. Wide receiver wise obviously is going to be a receiver added, but Jefferson Naylor, we’ll get to him in a second. Tim Jones parlaying some nice preseason and training camp performances. He’s there. Uh, Miles Price. So, Miles Price being out of 53 likely means that he won the punt return job. So, we’ll see. Urosk is tight end three. I don’t know. Nick Muse is out there just chilling, right? We’ll have a separate list because there’s so many damn players. Uh, it’s almost like teams had to jettison like 47 players each. So, so it’s like 1,600 players. No, that doesn’t make sense. Yeah, 1,600 players. Uh, then you got Derek. That’s going to bother me. That’s probably broad probably math. It doesn’t matter. Uh then you got uh offensive line keeping 10. Darasaw Jackson, Kelly Fry, O’Neal. Okay, now I have to do it. Um All right. So, calculator and Nancy, I’m Asian. That’s bad at math. 47* 32. Yeah. Well, 1500. Close enough. Close enough. Uh and then second team. Yeah. School, Hubert, Jurgens, Brandle, and Rouse. I actually think that Brle might be some trade bait there. There’s some offensive line needy teams around the league and maybe Quy can parlay that into some nice nice. So, we’ll see. Defensively, um defensively, uh like we said, keeping six defensive lineman, Allan Hargrave, T Elijah Williams making the squad. Uh the Harrison Phillips trade helped facilitate that because it’s a numbers game along the D line. LDR uh that that ankles is healthy and ready to go as evidenced by his performance against the Tennessee Titans. They got Jaylen Redmond in the mix as well. Taki I think will be back on the practice squad but we’ll get into the practice squad in a bit. Uh five on the edge AVG Grard Turner Bo Richter as well as Chamblas. So Chamblas ahead of Gabriel Murphy which we’ll get to Gabe Murphy really Murphy was the only surprise but Chaz better against the run setting the edge plays better special teams than Gabe Murphy so it kind of makes sense. All right. And I I think that maybe Murphy gets claimed, but remember, if a team waiver claims a player, they have to put him on the 53man roster, right? So, a lot fewer players than you think every year get claimed, right? Because they have to put him on on the regular roster. Can’t just put him on the practice squad. Five off balls. Pace Cashman outside. How about that? Wilson, Kobe King, and Austin Keys. I think Dory Mousie is a candidate for practice squad, but props to Austin Keys, man. Flying around making plays. Good to see. four corners in on the 53. Obviously, this is going to change. Uh Rogers, Akuda, Murf, uh and Nud Mcloth. The rest of the second team, Blackman got traded to the Colts. Uh Zamaya Vaughn got let go. Maybe it was that that one long touchdown that he gave up, which I don’t know, in the grand scheme of things, that’s that’s a whatever play, but yeah. Uh and then you have uh five safeties, Harrison Smith Jackson, Tavier Thomas, who can also play corner. Same thing with carry on my Jayward son. I think Khalif Alassie is a candidate for the pract squad as well. And then of course specialist not listed but Will Rackard Ryan Wright over Oscar Chapman who doesn’t count on the practice squad once they get him as well as Andrew Depala Bagels long snapping. All right. Also what’s interesting is that Daryus. All right. So CJ Ham as well as Tyler Baddy both listed on injured reserve designate for a return. out it changed things up where you don’t have to put a player on 53 and then way a beat and blah blah blah and then put him on on short-term IR. Uh so the the two spots are Tyler Baddy who dinged up his knee against the Titans as well as CJ Ham who’s been missing the last couple weeks with an unspecified injury. Uh so they’ll have to miss a minimum of four weeks and then they’ll go from there. And what’s nice about it is that Darasa first off wasn’t on the pup list to start training camp and then also was not on put put on IR doesn’t a fair return. Now, that doesn’t lock up that he’s going to be starting week one. Uh, but it means that he’s likely going to be starting within the first month of things. Otherwise, probably put him on uh short-term IR. So, good good thing for Darasaw. Also, Jaylen Naylor with all the drama about his jammed hand and was there surgery? Was there not? He doesn’t start on the injured reserve list. But also, is Naylor healthy enough to play week one? If so, I mean, that that solves a lot of issues for the Vikings wide receiver room. But who knows? Uh Zelenu said Gabriel Murphy last year’s UDFA out of UCLA was the only surprise only surprise waiver. Uh Peliser the Vikings plan to wave Gabriel Murphy barring a trade. Da d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d M Murphy had one and a half sacks in the preseason. Now people are up in arms because Murphy looked good in preseason, but like we said, you know, Shambley Chambbley looked like a dog, too, literally because the pride of Georgia, but he plays better special teams and better against the run. I don’t think Murphy is ever going to be solid against the run, but a platoon pass or specialist. Yes. Also remember Gabriel Murphy is on the Vikings practice squad last year. All right. So, initially he was on IR and then he was activated off of injured reserve and then was uh tossed out to the practice squad. So, he’s already gotten through waiverss once and maybe he’ll do it again. Uh, who knows? We’ll see. So, practice squad wise, th this is my shooting from the hip thoughts. So, the Vikings allowed to have 17 cuz a Oscar Chapman international pathway player, but I think they’ll add a quarterback. I think that’s TBD. I I don’t think it’ll be Brett Ripeness, but you never know. Uh Giovanni Reichi. Uh so, we pointed this out when we initially broke down the 53. So, the Vikings don’t have a fullback right now, but they do want to run the football a lot more. And Reachi had some nice moments in preseason training camp. Also, initially he came into the league as a fullback. You know, played some decent fullback for the Carolina Panthers a couple years ago. Speaking of the Panthers, we’ll get get to Panthers in a little bit. Uh so so Reachi could be on the practice squad and then a game day elevation for a couple of weeks before he runs onto that eligibility. So there you go. Uh Deshawn Jones, Lucky Jackson there, Thomas, I think win play show 123 will be on the practice squad. Bryson Nesbbit, I think he showed enough to warrant practice squad spot. Same thing with Henry Bird, Logan Brown. Uh defensively, Taki Tammani on the nose, Gabe Murphy, obviously Doran Mousie, uh the two UFA linebackers. going with Austin Keys really did a nice job on the practice squad and I’ll put Khif philosi on there too. Plus, you know, there’s always shifting and uncertainty. Uh so, not only on the roster, but also on the pract. So, I’m just going to have three places to players that aren’t even in the sphere or right now that they uh that they pick up this afternoon. All right. And speaking of the Panthers, so uh the Adam drama, so much drama in LBC, I’m sort of over it. Like honestly, if the Panthers want to play hard ball, go ahead. Yeah. Uh, but Adam Shaft was on the McAfee show. Quote, “The Vikings have tried to trade for Adam Thelen, but up until now, it just doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. They would love to have Adam Thelen, but maybe they pivot to signing KJ Osborne.” Also, Shaft has reported that Theelen also would like to join Minnesota uh in just a tweet that was straight from the his age of Blake Barrett 100%. Right. Uh but to the Panthers, I say whatever. Go ahead. That we have plenty of options now. And honestly, if you want to play hard ball, oh, we want a third or no matter what. Okay, so you’re gonna have a 35 year old wide receiver who’s not gonna be part of your team pass this season. You’re going to pay his full salary of 6.25 million as well as uh active per game uh bonuses. And also, he does not play special teams. And also, you’re going to take away snaps from uh your young wide receiver car. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Because honestly, after 3 weeks, we we do not care at all. Right. So, the Vikings have very unique circumstance right now because they need someone to to contribute the first three games. This isn’t one of those normal trade scenarios where something happens on the team, usually an injury, and you need someone for the rest of the year. We need someone for the first three games until Addison gets back. Once Addison gets back, we have zero goose egg Russell interest in trading for a wide receiver. So now you’re just going to sit with the and you’re like because remember you freshened up the contract before you drafted Tet before you brought in Jimmy Horn, right? So now you’re just be like, I don’t know, Jim, we’re going to try and train him at the deadline. Oh, no one wants a 35-year-old wide receiver who we have to pay a pro-rated salary of 6.25 million. I don’t know. So then he’s just going to sit on your bench and then he’s just going to be you gone cool and you get nothing. Good day. and you won’t even get cop picks because, you know, no one’s going to sign him in free agency next year for decent money. So, congratulations. You played yourself because the Vikings have plenty of options. Trey Palmer, also Trey Palmer could get in the return mix as well. He’s the odd man out in Tampa Bay. Robert Woods just got let go by the Steelers. I had no idea he was on the Steelers, but has crossed over with Kevin McConnell. KJ Osbourne is the obvious one. Oh, but he had drops. Everyone had drops in 2023. Oh. Oh, miso s me so sorry s that sometimes KJ didn’t bring in bowels from the passionat where he literally got put in the hospital by Jeff Aakuda but and also Malachi Corley. I kind of like Corley in the draft process last year but he’s definitely a project and doesn’t really fit the Vikings specific need. We need the first three games. Uh Corley is a player that you sign because maybe he’ll turn into something in a year or two. So I don’t know but again I kind of like Corley in the draft last year. Who knows? But, uh, there there will be a a ton of turnover. This is by this is far from the final form of the Vikings, uh, 53man roster. Uh, it doesn’t off when does this officially get set? Sometime in the next couple days. Shall I look that up, right? Uh, but waivers go through today, then teams can start assembling the practice squad and there will be a lot of of moves, a lot of shifting, a lot of adjustments. Fun time of year. And then we get down to Dun D football, right? Because you know this time of year talking about Max Brosmer hyping up is fun but oh yeah remember oh thank heaven for number nine JJ McCarthy. That’s right. Uh anyways your thoughts are thoughts Vikings news dump for this beautiful glorious Wednesday. You guys are the best. You know what to do. Skull production value.

  1. Three quick thoughts:
    1. Great points Andy, especially "doesn't matter if/where you're drafted". Clearly the Vikes recognize that character & adaptability (*) are necessary to stay on the 53, and win in the big games.
    2. Main surprises: Kwesi A-M cutting Gabe Murphy, keeping Austin Keys & so little depth left at CB.
    3. IMHO, the fact that the Panthers cut Hunter Renfroe significantly decreases the chances of Thielen getting cut/traded.

(*) "It is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most adaptable to change."
[quote from evolutionary biologist Herbert Spencer… later approved by Charles Darwin because it conveniently summarizes of the true concept of "Natural Selection"]

  2. I love how we went from years of bad O line play to now having one of the best units in the league. Something that if Rick would’ve done we might’ve seen a SB sooner than this season
