White Sox vs. Nationals Game Highlights (9/27/25) | MLB Highlights

It’s my pleasure to welcome you all to see you later today. A special celebration for our friend and colleague, Bob Carpenter. Bob, as you’re joined by your lovely wife, Debbie and your entire family behind you. It’s our honor to celebrate you and reflect on your career in broadcasting. That has been more than 40 years , including 20 right here with us. Your love of the game is contagious. Your calls are memorable and your score books are legendary. Personally, I want to thank you for your friendship, your support and for being the same guy every day that you walk into the booth fans. It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for. Please direct your attention to the broadcast level behind home plate where we will officially unveil Bob’s name under the Nationals TV broadcast booth. My goal as we signed off after every game was to make you glad and proud that you’re a nats baseball fan, win or lose. We’ve had our ups and downs. We’ve been through a lot together. There’s one thing we will always share and those are the memories we experienced together because baseball is a game of memories. My highest honor has been spending time with our Nats fans from our lofty booth, 288 ft above here, living and dying with you as our nationals have battled to the last out. Thank you for these memories. If this is goodbye, I will miss you all so much, but maybe it’s not goodbye. Maybe it’s simply, can you say it with me? See you later? Yeah, possible light rain, cloudy skies, 75 as we get ready for this one humidity, of course , way up there but quite pleasant at the ballpark at the moment and on the mound for his 33rd and final start of the season. Jake Urban 28 year old right hander facing the White Sox for the first time in his big league career. I think the perfect chance right here for Jake Irvin on see you later today. The boomer sooner himself 33rd start of the year nine and 13, 569 trying to go exactly how it kind of went against the Mets the other day out to short early test for Abrams on the run, low throw. Pretty good pick by Luis GarcĂa Junior. Here’s the pitch swing and a miss down. He goes, struck him out on a fastball at 94 miles an hour. A good start to the game for right hander. Jake Sox going with the opener today. Here’s Tyler Gilbert. This is his fifth start. He’s been on in 42 games so far. This year with an, er, a just over four James Wood, 2, 5438 doubles. Fourth in the league, 30 home runs, 92 runs batted in. Swinging a line drive and hard a base hit to the right of the third baseman Vargas who was well off the line to shortstop and on through to left field, it’s a leadoff single for James Wood. The pitch coming and a swing and a ground ball right to so he’ll get it to Montgomery relay to first in time, a 363 double play. What a real nice job by Sousa. He caught that and got rid of it quickly. Never gave wood a chance to veer into the path of that throw. So job well done. Get that out. Get back and cover quickly. Looks like an experienced first baseman on that play. What a play by Sosa gets to his feet, makes the toss to Gilbert and the Sox get out of this first inning out that lane soa all world over there at first base in that first inning. Keep it up. So Vargas has a leadoff single and he remains hot. He’s now hit in eight straight games. Edgar Carro, he’s d hing batting left handed Abrams. Oh my, look at this. He had to backtrack to get to the ball and Franny, Then the athlete took over as one heck of a heads up play foot and glove just to make sure of the out. Now the pitch swing and a miss down, he goes on another curveball. Urban strikes him out finishes the second inning the way he did the first with a swinging strike three for his second strikeout Alfaro fighting off that pitch, a single into right field stolen base for Jorge Alfaro. It is his first running on a left hander. And so with that stolen base, he’s in scoring position at second base Vargas chasing foul territory. Will he get there? What a play as he crashes into the netting hustle from Vargas as he records out number two and he lost his hat, but he caught the ball and Then ended up into the netting. I didn’t think he was going to get there and he reached out, glove palms up on the run out of the warning track. So we’ve got a pitching change. It will be Burke coming on to face House runner at second two outs were in the second nothing , nothing. The 02 from Burke got it by him. So no runs for the nationals. One hit a steal and it’s a leadoff single for Colson Montgomery is next shortstop struck out swinging first time. Second time. The Sox have had their leadoff man as Montgomery high in the air to right field. It is Lyle drifting back at the , he did it again, back to back games with a home run for Coulson Montgomery his 21st of the season and the Sox on the board. Two nothing here in the fourth number 21 for Coulson and it’s two nothing. Sox walks Vargas with four misses in a row. And so after three very good innings has hit a speed bump here in the fourth, a single, a homer and a walk. Sox lead two. Zip Vargas takes off Baldwin takes a strike. The throw by alfaro gets into center field, look like a pretty good throw, but Abrams just didn’t catch it. So it’ll be a stolen base for miguel Vargas, his sixth swing and a fly ball to deep right and it is off the pole. A home run Baldwin kind of watched it from home plate. There was no question about the distance just fair or foul and it is a two run homer and it’s four nothing for brooks Baldwin. His first home run since August 20 fifth, josh Bell about he’s gonna jack one the other way to left center and it’s off the glove of Baldwin who is there and josh Bell will rumble into second base. We’ll see how they score it covered a lot of ground, but it looked like it was catchable. This is playing the outfield. He gets a power lefty that stays inside of baseball nicely. That ball’s gonna fade back, come right back to you as a left fielder, they’re going to give that an E seven. Here’s Daylan Lyle. There’s one blessed by Lyle to right center. See you later, you can run the bases. Daylan. It’s out of here, a two run homer for Daylan Lyle his ninth that cuts the White Sox lead in half. It’s 4 to 2 and he hits four line drives at anybody. Incredible job. Derek Hill will lead off with the White Sox out of the number nine spot in the order against jake and has thrown 50 pitches. His first pitch lined to center coming on. Jacob Young into a slide. He does it again. He just loves playing center field so much you can just see it. So on. Q Nunez delivers a one out single. Nunez terrific offensive improvement. He’s at first for Jacob Young. Jacob Young deep to left. See you later. Heck of a time for a second homer of the year. His first at home and we are back even here. J with the big, it’s his fifth career homer. It’s rain. He’s technically the new, it’s 44. We’ve got a pitching change coming. Rain has picked up once again as brandon Isert has entered the game. It’s a 44 tie. The nats have done it again. They’ve been down big. They battled back to get even a little earlier tonight. Here’s James Wood. Yeah. Number 31. Your nets are on top. Do it, James Wood. His 12th homer versus a lefty. And that’s how you stay in on the lefty and the most unlikely of back to back home run duos Jacob Young and James Wood Pilkington’s first pitch is hit in a line to right center field and down for a base hit toward the gap. Young cuts it off in deep right center. Rounding first is Chase Maroth and the throw to second. Not in time over the second baseman’s headed to right center field was a long run for Jacob Young to get over there, did a spin and the throw on one hop made it fairly close. That’s, that’s gonna challenge whether he came off the bag on the tag, his right foot. Then the left foot, the left foot came off for a minute. Did Abrams have the glove on there when the foot was in the air? Just for a fraction of a second? It’s worth the challenge in the eighth inning. Jacob Young gets his fourth outfield assist of the year. And if for any, if there’s ever a lesson to not ever give up on a play, that’s it right now. And Montgomery keeps the inning alive with a single. So that is his third hit today. So Miguel Cairo, interim manager make the pitching change with two outs here in the eighth inning. Rain continues to fall here in DC. Right. Clayton Beater takes over the pitching big fastball, big breaking ball when he’s on. This is his 24th appearance for the Nationals vs, is single to left, walked, stolen a base, scored beer to the belt kicks, delivers the pitch swinging a bouncing ball right side. Nunez chases a long way to get to. It does throws on the run in time to Garcia and the inning is over cam against James Wood 1st and 3rd 2 outs. Eight inning playing through a pretty torrential downpour. Now the pitch swinging a line drive up base hit to left field that will score garcia Young around second heading for third. The throw there’s not in time young feet. First slide almost slid over the bag skidding on the wet infield dirt holding at first with a single to left and another run batted in his 94th of the year is James Wood. This is the scene right now. The rain has been coming on for the final three innings here in this ball games. The grounds are doing a great job trying to keep this playing surface playable. They’re putting a quick try out there trying to soak up all the wet spots to make sure that we can finish this game as we’re getting ready to start this ninth inning with the sox down by two. If I’m a white sox hitter, I might just hit the ball on the ground and see what happens. It is a little marshy out there , but I think it’s clear we are not going to stop playing at least right now. So jose Ferrer, he was the guy who gave up the two run shot to Colson Montgomery last night in the ninth and the Nationals will go back to him again here tonight. Swing and a miss for the all important first out. Now the batter will be Lane and Sousa struck out, swinging, fly to the track in center, struck out swinging all for three. This one hit hard and it’s gonna fall in right field, slamming on the brakes is Corey Lee understanding that his run doesn’t mean anything. And the Sox now with the tying run on at first base, White Sox had some cooking right here. First and second. You don’t fall down on the slick infield dirt. You got to take advantage of a wet ball for the fielder and we’re going to see a pinch hitter, a 2019 World series champ swing and a miss two down Taylor out on three pitches for the second out here in the top of the ninth inning and it’s airmail to the backstop. That could be big because now the White Sox have the tying runs in scoring position. Both of them, a newcomer, Derek Hill trying to come up with a big hit 12 on the ground deflected by the pitcher and no throw. So the run will score and Derek Hill keeps this game going. It’s a one run ball game. I mean, for Nunez not to be able to pick it up shows how tough the conditions are so much glare of off the lights on the infield as he broke in on his great heads up baseball by CJ to stay with it and to keep that tying run at third base, it is a mess up and it’ll be Chase Maroth, that’ll do it for the Nats hats off to these guys for playing and playing well, errorless ball under really rough conditions and our fans for sticking with it and a very satisfying 65 win.
