Lehkonen pushes Colorado Avalanche over Dallas Stars to keep preseason perfect
[Music] [Applause] [Music] Heat. Hey, heat. Hey, heat. [Music] Welcome in to the DNVR Avalanche podcast postgame style live as the ABS win game three of the preseason four to one over the Dallas Stars. They remain but perfect 3 and 0 on the preseason which totally means something and definitely isn’t meaningless at all. Yeah, for sure. For sure. Before we do that though, let’s do our let’s do our Dr. Dubs winner shots here, you know. You got to get them in while you can. We really should be doing three, but we aren’t. Should be, but we can only do what we can do. Let me see some Dr. Dubs up in the chats. All right. If you are not Oh my god. a supporters club member and you’re watching us at 8:00 p.m. on a Saturday and that’s what you’re doing with your life, you should probably be a supporters club member. It’s for you. Yeah. This is that’s what it’s for. So, sign up with that. You get the Dr. Dubs emoji. you get access to some of our behind thescenes content and hopefully a bunch more emojis as well uh as the season goes on and we unlock some more by the more members we get the more emojis we get. So jump in on that. Let’s get into the game. But as I’ve done all preseason we will preface and you have to understand the situation that you are in in preseason. Dallas brought three NHL player. Three real bonafide NHL players. Yeah, this was not Dallas’s a squad. I’ll put it to you that way. I mean, they get the they hit the veteran because all the guys that they’re that are going to be vying for their fourth line. Uh Oscar Back, Nathan Bastian, Colin Blackwell are all in the same game. Yeah. Uh and then you do have on the back end you have Petravic, Kolotchronic, Lquist, Bishell. So that sounds like a lot of their guys, but like a lot of their bottom guys, two of those guys will play in a real game, right? Like regularly. Meanwhile, the ABS top line was McKinnon and Lechin and and Oliv. No, neither neither goalie is going to be a real goalie for them, right? So both of the goalies that the ABS played in this game will play for the ABS against the Kings on opening night. Hopefully only one of them will play. They will suit up. You know what I mean? They will suit up. Opening night in Vegas last year has me scarred. Yeah. And did the Az bring their full juice lineup? No. But they did have McKinnon. They did have Lechan and Olivesson. They have a number of guys that are on their fourthish line or vying for those positions. There were a handful of NHLers. So their defense was a little bit thinner, but they did have Burns. Does it count to have Nathan McKinnon when he’s only when he is 30% Nathan McKinnon? 30% is generish, brother. And I thought I was I thought I was like I’m going to lowball him a little bit here. 30% it that was it. Yeah, that was maybe 15%. He was he was coasting not invested all the way around on that one. And then again that’s part of what preseason is. So yes, we’re going to talk about the positives. We’re going to talk about the negatives. understand you’re not taking the full gamut of what this game was quite as seriously as you might a regular season game. Yeah. Don’t take very much of it seriously. Yep. Just the competition was like high AHL. Sure. I mean, there’s a number of really good AHL players in this game. The competition is there. The game itself Oh, third period was fun. Yeah. Yeah, first two periods, not the best hockey I’ve ever seen. Yeah, we’ll leave it at that. Um, we’ll break out into a couple of things. Lucky multi-point night looked really good. I don’t think we really need to say anything about Lucky because he’s Lucky. Yeah, he preeason, regular season, postseason, he’s Lucky. No, it doesn’t matter the situation. You know what he’s going to do. You know he’s good at it. Yep. Played effective hockey. Scored two points including a goal. Awesome. Scored a goal. the the ultimate like try hard. Yeah. Falling down. I’m just swapping in a spot. Yeah. Getting a stick on the puck and good things happen. Outworking somebody. Where do you want to start? Overarching team things or do you want to get into specific players? Let me ask you that. Well, we could start with the overarching. Okay. So, drill down from there. Again, game wasn’t particularly good. Shots were 13 to7 in the ABS favor for whatever that’s worth after two periods, but it was a pretty low event game at least for the first two. The ABS I don’t even know if I can take a ton as a team from the ABS at five on five in this game because of the ridiculous amount of penalties. Yeah. That ended up happening against Dallas. Yeah, Dallas took was it seven or eight? I forget. Uh it’s seven power plays to two. Okay. So, yeah, seven avalanche power plays in this game. So, you got a good look at those units. The problem is half the guys that are on those units weren’t in this game. So, you didn’t really get a look at what their units are supposed to look like. Yeah. Again, you got a Nathan McKinnon not trying right at all. On a unit with Brent Burns not trying and Arttoriin who’s not on your top power play unit. Y Ross Colton who’s not on your top power play unit. Yep. You did see Olivesson though, who you might want to try on your power play. And you saw a little bit there, but yes, this was not uh if you were looking to feel better about the power play. Good god, this did not do that for you. This was not the game. And they had two power plays that I that I can recall off the top of my head where I was like, dang, they moved the puck well. They they they created some chances. If you have three power plays and we’re talking about two of them looking pretty good, fine. Great. Fine. Sometimes you’re just not going to score. The other team has NHL players, too. But you went over seven, including a double minor. You went over seven, and I can think of two that were good. Yeah. That’s not That’s not very good. Yeah. So, like, let’s just be real. There’s no way to dress up 0 for seven as any kind of a good thing. No. But also, don’t overreact to 0 for seven because again, the personnel on hand is not going to be the personnel that that runs their power. Their PP2 at one point was Ivan Nielsen and I can’t even remember who else. Kevin Brimley. Yeah. Like their PP2 wasn’t a real unit at all. Basically, like like let’s be real here. This was not meaningful. With that being said, if they had gone seven for seven, we’d be sitting here saying, “It’s still not meaningful.” Yeah, this is not meaningful. But also, that was a lot of fun. I do think there are some things to look at on this power play and mostly for unit one it’s Victor Olifson, right? Like yeah, I think he looked pretty decent. A couple of those power plays that looked good are stemming from him being the trigger man on that right side. And to be honest, as a whole, I liked Olivesson’s game today. Again, easy competition, someone he’s supposed to look good against for the most part, but he was shooting the puck well, even if he didn’t find the back of the net. and he looks good. When you’re talking about the AB systems of being a forward that you’re asking to forch check and things like that, I think there was a good amount alike from him. Yeah. The the willingness to shoot the one-time early on the power play attempts was met immediately with Dallas going uh uh uh we’re going to cover that. Yeah. They and they so they start to shade the PK over towards him right away. Yep. And then Nathan McKinnon breaks him down for a couple of really good scoring chances and it was like that was the power play that I think they should have scored on. Yep. It opens up that bumper play that he likes so much when Oliv and then they went away from it. They did which made no sense. I don’t know. Well, part of this and again I don’t care that Brent Burns had a bad game but he did have a bad game. Yeah. In that aspect. Yeah. Did he maybe attempted one shot across all of those power plays? Just was not shooting the puck for the ABS. Yeah. It seemed very comfortable to just give the puck to somebody else and go, “You guys go do it.” Yeah. And it wasn’t like, “Oh, I’m going to defer to Nathan McKinnon.” Yeah. I’m going to defer to everybody. The first guy I see is getting this puck and it’s not the goalie. So yeah, it he had two shots on goal, but only one on the power play, I think. Yeah, I’d have to go and look, but yeah, not that it matters. It’s two shots on goal in 1,322 seconds play. What happened to the NHL second track? I have never I have never ever looked at the stat sheet the box score on the NHL’s website and had to go this guy played 771 seconds. Let me that means nothing to me. 12 minutes and change or something that is. Yeah. Okay. It’s preseason for the NHL backup or for the NHL website as well. Or, you know, you can always go with the famous Sedorov quote. But yeah, we can’t we can’t quote you can’t say it anymore. At least not until overtime. Imagine as soon as it gets goes into overtime, just start saying it. Uh so yeah, power play bad. Yeah, I I don’t think there’s any other way to put that. It’s just I’m not worried about it because it’s a preseason game. You look at the rest of the team and first of all, Chris Chapov, not exactly sure what happened to him, but he only played two minutes. Yeah. And then was not on the bench, was not in the game. Hold up. You mean 129 seconds. Sorry. Yeah. Only took a couple of shifts in the first period and left. Obviously, you never want anyone to get hurt. That sucks. He was one of the guys that at least early on in preseason was in the mix of who’s going to be the call up, who gets a shot at 4C type of thing. Yep. So, you hope he’s okay. We’ll see exactly what plays out there. But his exit kind of clears the lane, right? Because the lane was maybe already clear. He’d already stepped out of it. I think that’s fair. But Bartikov and Ivan Ivan both had good games. Yeah. Um, Bardikov especially was really good. I would agree. Ivan Ivan was fine, but he makes a great just created the first play on the first goal. I chips the puck in. Uh, goes and gets it behind the net, wins the battle, makes a great little play, puts it behind himself, taps it off the wall to himself, gets body positioning on the defender, and then makes the comes across behind the net. Yep. Backhand pass out in front to Gavin Brimley who just taps it home. Yep. Puts it nicely in the corner on the opposite side. Easy finish for Brimley. Yeah, for sure. Who four goals in three games now. Has scored in every game he’s played in an ABS jersey. One rookie showcase, two preseason games. Just keep doing that in the regular season and uh the ABS will be the best team of all time. Yeah, you’ll probably win MVP if you score 82 goals. Yeah, if you score a goal in every single game on Colorado’s third line. What? Maybe not. In the Gretzky years, there might have been a couple seasons you wouldn’t win MVP by doing that. Maybe. Well, he had he had what 90 something one year goals, I think. Yeah, he had a 92 goal season. So, as long as it’s not that year, it’ll get the job done basically. Yeah. Uh it is interesting at every turn so far Zakar Bardikov has earned the role and granted he was given the inside track to that 4C job. Yeah. But you you’ve have enough momentum now that we’re nine games nine days into preseason 10 days into preseason. This is Bartikov’s second preseason game of three. Yep. And every time you get a look at him, you say, “Yeah, he he played well. He did what he needed to do.” and and I think just as importantly outplayed all the competition. Yep. Has been the best of the bunch for sure. So there hasn’t been a single day of training camp, preseason, any of it where I’ve thought, “Wow, Ivan Ivan really looked a lot better than Zakar Bartikov or Nikita Prrischov or any of these guys.” Yep. That we were talking about. None of them have looked better. Agree. It’s it was his job to lose anyway, like I was saying. But at this point, he lost it. To be honest, at this point, it feels locked up at least to start the year. It’s it’s it I think it’s a fair question. The preseason ends in 10 days. Yeah. Like what’s going to happen? What would have to happen in the next 10 days for Zakar Bartikov to not win it? An injury. I mean that’s understood, right? Like the injury is the only avenue. I think that’s about it. That Zakar Bartov is not your 4C on opening night. Get suspended for doing something incredibly dumb. So we’ve got injury and suspension as the avenues where Zakar Bardikov is not your 4C on opening night. Those are the only You never say never, right? Something crazy could happen. Maybe Bardikov plays the next three preseason games the worst anyone’s ever played hockey before. But it would be really hard for me to see anyone else take Bardikov’s spot. Even if you did feel like Ivan took a step today. Yeah. It’s still a clear level below what you’ve gotten out of Bardikov. Yeah. So, it’s I just don’t see it happening. And the only guy that I think has played close enough that you could feel like it would be a competition is Brinley, but he doesn’t play center, so it just doesn’t matter. Yeah. BS. Yes. We know that the studio lighting is bright. Uh we don’t have a producer, so this is the two of us doing this. Studio lighting isn’t what we do. So it they’re just on. Just you’re just gonna have to live with a little bit of the ugly show today. Yeah, we’re going to be blown out. That’s just how it is. Schedule was a nightmare. There are four Colorado games that happened at the same time today. Roughly at the same time today. So we understand it’s all good. We had to make it work. Yeah, it’s all good, guys. The reason I sit in front of the camera, not behind. Not because I’m good at this. It’s because I’m bad at the other thing. Uh, on that note, we do need to take our first commercial break of the show. So, let’s make sure we’re hitting that. Getting our bills played paid even if we are flashbanging you. Don’t. That’s not good phrasing. It’s fine. What’s wrong with that? I’m not flashbanging anybody. People know what a flashbang is. It’s fine. All right. Yeah, I guess that is very America. On that note, don’t get flashbanged on the roads. Make sure you’re in the official vehicle of DNVR, which is Toyota. When we’re talking about a preseason game, when we’re talking about skill levels that maybe not line up super well from team to team, is there anything specific you look for out of guys in a game like this? Yeah. Uh, it’s a dumb answer, but I look for the guy that plays well. Fair enough. Like, yeah. Who’s going to stand out? I’m not looking for anything from Nathan McKinnon. Don’t get hurt. That’s it, right? Coast. Coast and get out of there. Yeah. Arty Lechin is just going to do what Arterry Lechinan does. Yep. He scored a goal in his first preseason game. Scored another one today. Why not? Why not be a good player? Both of them just right in front of the net. He’s just working hard like Great. Arttori Leadin’s probably costing guys jobs because he’s outworking them in front of the net. That’s it. Like Dallas looking at their guys going like, “What happened, bro?” Yeah. Utah did the same thing where they’re like, “You’re trying to make a team here.” Arttori Lein, bad for the economy. You heard it here first. Taking jobs away from people. I I really that I think that’s just what it’s going to boil down to for me when we’re watching it. We’re talking through the game as we do. Uh it’s really just like who plays well, who’s looking good out there, who’s actually standing out, who’s making them make decisions, who’s forcing their hands a little bit. One of those guys that I think that we have not talked very much about is Tristan Nielsen has been looked really good today. So he has a two-goal game last weekend. Yep. A couple of those goals are I he was at the end of some pretty nice plays. We’ll see. Like he was he was the recipient of really good hockey on the other end, but he finishes great. Uh gets an empty net goal tonight. Great. But we talked about him all night long. His speed was making an impact. He wasn’t afraid to get involved physically. He was going for a hit. Yep. He’s going to to to mix it up. He’s scrapping with guys. I don’t remember which dude it was that looked like he could eat him for breakfast, but he was jawing with him. He wasn’t going to fight him, but he was jawing with him. He wasn’t going to fight, but he gave him a little bit of business. Yeah, absolutely. He’s like, “Hey, I’m here. I’m not that kind of here, but I’m here.” And respect. That’s not who Tristan Neielson is. And don’t do that. The biggest the biggest thing don’t try and make a team and make an impression by being something that you’re not. Yeah. Just be true to you, man. Just be you and it’ll all work out, right? It’s so cheesy and it’s so lame. But if you try and be the absolute best version of who you are to your core, you’ve put yourself in a great position to be successful. And we’ve seen Tristan Nielsen capitalize on his invite to to the abs. Well, and that’s and they’re they’ve kept him around this long. There’s an interesting conversation there because this is his second preseason game. We saw them cut a couple of guys today that got zero season and those were AHL guys anyway. But there’s a reason he was here for a second game. He looked good in that game. Maybe he gets a third game. Is he going to play for the Colorado Avalanche this year? No. But is he on his way to earning a contract? Maybe. This is exactly what it This is exactly what it looked like with Ivan Ivan. Yep. When he was an invite and it was like we like him. Let’s see. He got an AHL contract out of it and then he turned that AHL contract into an ELC. You got to build. Yep. It has to start somewhere. And he’s had a good camp. He’s had a He’s been You can’t take that away from him. I have not been paying much attention to him at practices because we’ve got a lot of other stuff going on. Yep. But like he’s gotten into games. He’s made impressions. He’s stood out. He’s making them make the decision with him of all right, we just want to we want to see more. We want to see more. And that’s all you can ask from a guy like that in that position. Make it hard to have him take you out of the lineup and he did that. He to be honest, I think the master of that this this preseason has probably been Gavin Brinley. It has been. But Neielson deserves the credit for a guy who same as you through the first week of preseason. I’d be lying if I said I noticed him much. Yeah. But a guy that took his opportunity and ran with it. We’re talking at camps through practices where there are 60 guys that we’re looking at across two sessions, you know, five hours and it’s like you there’s too much going on. Like you it is with drills happening on both ends of the ice. It is physically impossible to drill that deep into it and have like an in-depth thought on every single one of those guys. It is impossible. Anybody that is doing it is lying to you. Yeah, it it’s why you say you look for the guys who stand out. But when you get to the guys in the games and you’re like, “These are actual games. This isn’t drills. This isn’t nonsense. Yep. This is This is onetoone. This is translatable stuff. You are playing in a game. This is situational stuff. What do you bring to the table? Tristan Nielsen’s been good. Gavin Brinley’s been great. It every day we have to have the same conversation about Gavin Brinley because every day it’s like, well, the ABS just don’t have a lot of room. But Gavin Brinley keeps saying, “Cut me then. I dare you. Yeah, I’m going to be better than everybody else. Okay. Well, I’m 5’7. I don’t take up a lot of room. You leave the You leave a crack in the door. I’m going to He’s going to wrigle through it. Yep. And that’s what he That’s exactly what he’s doing right now. Like they have played him on the penalty kill in every game that they have had a chance to. Yep. They’ve played him on the power play in every game that they’ve had a chance to. They have continued to put him in advantageous situations offensively and that’s great, but he’s producing. I the produ production is important and that’s immediately going to give him a leg up, but also and I’m not going to tell you he’s a perfect player. There have been mistakes throughout the games from Brinley, but he’s got he’s got that extra juice, extra battery, the motor, whatever you want to call it that every shift you see him working hard. You you’ll see him. Is he going to be a great defender ever? No. But if he gets a guy along the boards, he’s going to work his tail off, get his stick in there, and create a loose puck. Yep. And you see it where he’s really effective is in the neutral zone. Mhm. He He hunts pucks like Jonathan Direan did where not a great defender. Yeah. Not great on the wall, you know, not strong, not Ask him to stop a guy, you’re in trouble. Ask him to jump on a puck, you got something. You, you know, he’s he’s so sneaky and he’s got such good vision and he’s so smart that he can get in there and he’ll he’ll lift a stick at the right time and he’ll swipe a puck. You know, he’ll he’ll disrupt timing of an end of zone entry. He’s really good and effective at a lot of those things, which was one of the big reasons why when the ads got him, we were like, “Hey, we know he’s small, but this is not just an offensive dynamo or bust type of player, right?” And we’re seeing the other parts of his game are carrying him to success. The production is great. He needs that. For my money, he has been a better penalty killer than power play player at this point. I would agree. The power play went 0 for seven today. Not putting that on him. Not putting that on anyone, putting it on everybody, right? But on the on the PK, you see he works and he gets on guys quicker than they’re expecting because he is so small that they that they’re like, “Oh, he doesn’t have the reach. He doesn’t have the size. He doesn’t have that explosive. I’m not familiar enough to know that he can get on me so suddenly that he causes some problems. He He forces them to make decisions and then he’s good enough with the puck that he can get it out when he gets hold of it.” And it’s he’s interesting. I I think that’s an interesting fit, especially when you talk about the ABS penalty kill at a whole because over the last couple of years, the ABS PK has generally been at its best when it’s playing a very simple brand of hockey that is, hey, high forward, just go cause chaos out there and make something happen and the puck will get kicked out or or whatever. LOC excels exceptionally at doing that. Yeah, he’s made a whole career out of it. Yeah, just all right, I’m going to be the guy. I’m going to outwork everyone and I’m going to get involved in everything. Gavin Brinley has that same kind of path, but he’s more offensively skilled for sure. He’s not going to score 60 points in an NHL season. He’s not going to be a 20 goal guy. That’s not what we’re talking about, but he’s not Cole Cfield, right? Not what we’re talking about. But he is a much better defensive player. Yep. He has he has a a gen like he’s got a decent defensive ceiling. There is the number of pathways to the NHL for him are starting to be a lot. Yeah, the only one he doesn’t have is play center, which is unfortunate, but and you’re looking at it going, “All right, well, now I’m I’m considering this conversation of Gavin Brinley versus Ulivana for my opening night 12th forward.” Yeah. And we kind of talked about that yesterday, too. For what it’s worth, Kibby Ra didn’t do a whole lot today. There was definitely some coasting going on there as well. So, and like this is another this is another and we say Kibby RA, but Parker Kelly’s also in this, but it’s more it’s more Kibby R because Parker Kelly’s a leftwing, Gavin Brimley’s a right-wing. It also when you understand generally speaking what Jared Bedar wants out of his fourth line, not that Kibby Ra isn’t really good defensively. He is. He’s very good defensively, but Parker Kelly is stylistically a fourthline defensive player in a way that Kib isn’t. Yeah. The way that he hits and block shots is something that Kib doesn’t do so much of. And that’s same is true to a certain extent to Brinley to be honest. Yeah. So as a you’re talking about three guys that could be on your opening night, fourth line wing. Yeah. Who go about it very differently. Yep. So I I think in a lot of ways stylistically Bedar feels more attached to Parker Kelly as a fourthline player. Yeah. Whereas I think in some ways Bednar sees Kiva as more of a third line guy if I’m honest with you regardless of how I feel about it. Um I don’t know how true that actually will be. Like ultimately I don’t know how true that will end up being. I think a lot of that conversation depends on what Victor Olivesson does. Yeah, I Victor Olivesson’s like a sneaky important part of that conversation for sure, but you know, so the ABS uh obviously just sorry to Yeah, news is news. Yeah, the ABS uh we know that they uh put a handful of guys on waiverss today. Um, Alex Baroule, Ty Felibar, Jason Poland, TJ Tinan. We knew all those guys were already know. Uh, but they also assigned Shawn Barren’s, Ivan Ivan, Jason Magna, Tristan Nielsen to Eagles camp. So, Ivan Ivan may be the only one that’s a little surprising there. Yeah. So, that would I think that that ends a conversation about whether or not Zakar Bardov has won the fourth line. Yeah. Um, if at absolute worst here, if he gets hers hurt, Parker Kelly can do that job and then, you know, we’re going from there. But Nikita Prrisov don’t I don’t know. Um, we were leaving so we don’t know what happened in the postgame press or what got said about his availability. Correct. Uh, but right now you are looking at that fourth line. Matt Steinberg is is also still around as an extra forward, but a lot of those guys have been cleared out now. Gavin Brinley’s in the big room. Yep. Gavin Brinley in the real real practice locker room now. He’s in the big room now. Of course, we were advocating for it and then they have practice on Monday. I’m not going to get to go to it. I think they have practice tomorrow. They do not. No. Did I read the schedule wrong? One of us did. Yeah. Sunday practice 9:00 a.m. They got practice tomorrow. That was me. I read it wrong. It’s usually me. So that’s a tight. That’s a new change to that conversation. But yeah, that does sound like one, yes, Spartac has locked up the 4C. Two, the fact that Gavin Brinley is still around there does mean something. I think does mean he’s going to play for the team or anything, but Gavin Gavin Brinley and Matt Steinberg are kind of in this mix for opening night roster. Yep. As depth guys. Correct. And you know, it’s again, there’s three preseason games left. There’s a long way to go here. Let’s not. We have a whole week of games that will decide things honestly in the next they play Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday for sure. I’d have to look after that. Yeah. I regardless. Yeah. By by this time next week, we will pretty much have an idea of all right where we’re at. These are the decisions that they’ve made. And by this time next week, opening night will be like four days away. So math adds up on that one. Yeah, we do need to take our second break of the show. So, let’s make sure we hit that and then we’ll get into a couple of other conversations that we have based on this game as we are brought to you by the Colorado Soccer Association. Third period of the DNVR Avalanche podcast. One other oddity, I I should not say it’s an oddity, but one other notable thing about the ABS lineup in this game, they slot Ross Colton in at center for this game and tight. I think we all are expecting Jack Drury to start in that 3C spot. Yeah, he will. But it feels like Bedar is pretty comfortable. But yeah, sports, I’m fired up. My team did stuff. It’s 20 to3. So, it was the CSU game at halftime. I’m I’m assuming uh it feels like Bedar if it doesn’t go well with Drury is comfortable quickly switching that to Colton back at 3C. Uh I don’t know about quickly, but it’s it’s there. Sure. He has it in his back pocket. He had it in his back pocket all last year. I just say as opposed to in his pressers, Bedar has actively come out and said, “Yeah, we don’t like Parker Kelly. Let’s see if we can avoid it.” Yeah. As opposed to Colton where he’s like, “Ah, it’s fine if Colton’s 3C.” I don’t hate this. They are leaving the door open for Jack Jury to not be in that spot. Yeah. Yeah. And honestly, if they’re if Gavin Brinley is going to force his way onto the roster, it might be here with Colton slotting into C and opening that wing spot. Yeah. Yeah. and it being Drury slots 4C then you have to make a BICOV decision. There’s a lot of moving pieces to that and this might be well Zakar Bartikov has outplayed 4C now he’s going to be we’re going to give him a look at 3C with these two guys and we’re going to put a really good fourth line together. Um, and I’m still expecting that Gavin Brimley is not like I’m not going to say he’s not making the team at this point. He’s played too well, but I’m not expecting him to stick with the team. He might get that first he might get the Conor Kimmons. Yeah. The first week or so he’s on the roster and then they send him down because they’re like, “Hey, this isn’t anything you’ve done wrong. We just we want you to play and you’re not going to play here right now.” It’s funny how a player like that can sometimes sort of end up being a wrench in the works. Yeah. Because it’s like you played so good that we have to try it. Yeah. But realistically, this is not our long-term plan. Yeah. And it’s not a long-term plan for him. Right. Unless they just give him those games and he just balls out. Man, if he just steals this job, if he continues to score every single game, I mean, if he just steals this job from Kibby Ronto and Kibby Ronto becomes your extra forward, you’re in really good shape. I don’t, but that’s a hard ask because as soon as Brinley has two bad games, he gone. You know, Bedner’s going to be twitchy because he’s like, it’s Kibby time. Yeah, it it’s interesting because again, I don’t think you’re going to get the defensive play out of Brinley that you would a Kiv Rono. Yeah, but you look at Kivy’s previous season. Yeah. In a world where Brinley plays the whole year, which I know isn’t going to happen, but in that world, if he gave you 16 and seven, you’re pretty okay with that, right? Like, yeah, the the hard part is Kibby gave you 16 and seven with elite defense. I Brinley, if he gives you 16 and seven, you’re going to be like, “All right, well, what else? What’s he doing on special teams? What’s what else?” And that’s that’s the real wrench here. Yep. There isn’t an obvious It is so easy to look at next year. You fast forward a year, Kibby Ra, they don’t need to bring either Kibby Ronto or Olafson back because Brinley is just that guy. It’s Olifson for me, right? Olafson’s archetype in the NHL is what you want Gra Gavin Brinley to be. Not as he’s not super elite shooter man, but offensive third line player is what Gavin Brinley projects as. very different style, but overall you’re getting to the same point on a different world. I don’t think I do think there’s a world where if everything goes great for Gavin Brinley Oh, it’s the boss. Yeah, my bad. If everything goes great for Gavin Brinley, you’re looking at a Victor Olivesson caliber of offensive player and hopefully someone who’s more impactful defensively than we’re expecting Olson. You’re talking when you say Victor Olson count, you’re talking like a 35 point guy, right? 1515 plus. Yeah, that’s what you’re looking for. Yep. It’s I I think we’re probably a little too in the weeds here cuz realistically for Brinley, that should not be the expectation for him this season. It’s not fair. But a year from now, two years from now, that’s the type of guy you’re hoping he becomes. Yeah. I would be surprised if Kiby’s not on the team in January to the to our comments uh on the screen’s point. Yeah. Um there’s no need. What are you gonna do? Yeah. Who are you going to trade him to? What’s his value? Are you going to give him up a fifth round pick so that you could turn around and go and get a Kivy like player at the deadline for extra depth? No, you just keep him. We’re also making assumptions that the ABS experience zero injuries by the time LC is healthy. Right. one, even if it’s a minor, hey, a guy’s weak week to week, having a Kivy around for that is huge. Yeah. So, there’s just no reason. They’re not in such a cap crunch that they need to try and cut a corner somewhere. They’re not in that position this year. Yep. They can afford to just whatever wherever Kivy’s going to fit onto their roster, he’s going to fit. They don’t need to do it. Now, Gavin Brinley’s forcing his way in with his tiny little guy elbows, but that’s a good problem to have. What do we do here? Well, this is this I think doubles back to a conversation we’ve been having all off season. You mentioned the waivers, which by the way, no one’s super notable on waiverss today. Not yet. Not a big deal. But the guys that I have liked would just not be a good fit for what the ABS need, right? But if you believe in a Gavin Brinley, if you believe in your lineup with a Kibby Ron as your 13th forward, it makes the idea of a forward waiver claim significantly less valuable. you just going to let it breathe. Yeah, it’s fine. You you shift that waiver claim conversation a lot more towards the defensive side of your lineup, which to be fair, I think it’s already there, but even more so, that waiver claim is, uh, hey, we feel comfortable at forward and and realistically, one of my biggest takeaways from today, our shout out, our boy Dario, who’s at the game with us. For the first time in a long time, you feel pretty okay with the ABS center depth going into this season. Yeah. You don’t necessarily need that flex guy that you felt like you’ve needed a lot of years in the past. The thing about feeling good about it today is that we could get two weeks into the season and feel differently. 100%. If Jack Jury can’t handle the 3C job, Bikov blows up at the NHL level and you’re and you’re looking at, okay, if we’re living in a world where Jack Jury can’t handle the 3C job, but then Zakar Bardikov also can’t handle a 3C job, then what do you do? You play Ross Colton at 3C, but right, but then where are you going with these guys? If Zakar Bartikov continues to play really well at center, that’s great. Yeah. But you know what you have in Jack Drury is such a good, reliable defensive center. I I do not see a world where Bardikov steals Jury’s job. I’ll put it to you that. No, me neither. And then what do you do with Bartikov? You find out if you can play Wing. So, I agree. I agree with you that one through five right now. And we’ll just say for fun that Ivan Ivan is five. Yeah. You feel solid about like, hey, you can you’re good with three, four, and five. You’re not good if either McKinnon or Nelson gets hurt. There’s no elevating. How many teams in the league are good at that? There’s no replacing Nathan McKinnon. None. There’s just there’s no preparing for that. Nobody can handle that kind of loss. Florida’s about to learn this a very hard way that you just can’t. And fix all of our season preview predictions because of what happened to Barkov. We just you just can’t, right? But if you lose a Brock Nelson for some reason, the ABS don’t have that guy that can elevate. That’s fair. We’re talking about these these guys need to elevate into the roles that they’re slotted into right now. Y let alone if they need to go up another one and that’s you could we could do this all day. Well, what if this happens? Do they have somebody for this? What if this happens? But we are talking about they are one injury away from two different guys. Yeah, but so are most teams like if not all teams to be honest. But there was, this is just me being devil’s advocate of when you had Charlie Coyle, you didn’t feel this way. You could feel that Charlie Coyle could at least step in and be a low-end two section. This is this is a little bit Cal Richie ceiling conversation, right? Yeah. Like that’s what this really is. And I get that. Fair enough. You can say the ABS don’t have those guys at center that can play up in the lineup, but call it hubris if you want. This is a trade deadline problem for Oh, it Yes, you can solve that when you get there. Do we do we need to sing the fight song twice? I’m saying they didn’t sing it after the first touchdown. We need to come up with an ABS fight song so we can be this annoying when the ABS and Nuggets play at the same time in the bar. Not that I’m not not trying to hate. Pop off about your teams for the record. I just hate fight songs in general. We don’t need the fight song twice. I’m sure Alyssa’s like, “All right, haters.” Yeah, we’re we’re being we get taken off the air here. We’re being run by a producer. Oh, really? End stream. No, I am I agree. It’s It’s a deadline problem. I do think that we are like not I think I it’s tough because I think we’re we are at the same time saying don’t worry too much about preseason results and then looking at preseason results and saying you have to strike a balance and saying well they’re good at center now. Yeah. Don’t take it too far. I’m saying I feel better about center going into this season than they have since 2022. Yes, that I think is I don’t know how you would feel otherwise. The center depth last year was a train wreck. The center depth before that was JT Confer at 2C uh and then Ryan Johansson and then Casey Middle and you know blah blah blah blah blah, right? Like and and you even felt good or rather I should I’ll speak for myself. I felt good about their center depth going into last season and you know Casey Middlestat ended up cratering and it was what it was. But that was the one and two C. When you looked at the three and four C at the start of last season, Jack Drury wasn’t here yet, right? You’re dealing with what position does Ross Colton actually play. Yeah. And then Parker Kelly was your 4C to start the year. We knew at the beginning of last year they’re going to need to find a a bottom six center somewhere along the way. Right. We’re not having that conversation to start the season. Exactly. And I think that’s your entire point. Yes. We’re not going into the year going, “Well, who’s really going to play this job?” Their centers on game one could be their centers for game one of the postseason reasonably. Yeah. I I do wonder how much turnover we will see in this roster in the regular season cuz it’s always some. There is always going to be a little bit, but really it it at the moment it requires guys to fail. Let’s let’s swat swap over and talk about the defense a little bit here. Yeah, I guess because and really the only NHL defenseman in this game for the Colorado Avalanche was Brent Burns if we’re being honest about it. But we’re in a conversation where Keon Middleton, we’re expecting him to be the seven. Okay, fine. actually thought he played pretty fine today. Oh, I did. I disagree. He’s always going to have the foot speed issues. That’s just part of it. Like, I’ve come to accept that about his game. I say I disagree. It’s just that uh it’s fine. We He had a couple of good plays in the PK. Not Not even what I want to talk about. We’re We’re in a position where he’s going to make the NHL roster. Yeah, it really doesn’t matter. I don’t think anyone did themselves any favors if they were trying to make themselves the number eight D today. I I think it’s Jack Aon. I know we’ve kind of been trying to push Wyatt Amont, but he just hasn’t done anything with I didn’t like either of them today if I’m being honest. And with Jackan, what I do really like is that man, he plays hard. Okay, that’s it. He plays hard. I got a whole laundry list of people who played hard that weren’t very good, buddy. and his mobility and his puck moving ability, like it’s always going to be something that appeals to this organization a little bit. In a perfect world, I go, you can see the mechanical fit in an AB system. But where where does he fit on this roster? That’s my problem. That’s I think that’s this is the problem that I have with Wyatt Amad is that we like him because stylistically he fits, but what he’s actually doing on the ice is a little less. How effective is a little lacking? Sure. And Shawn Barren just needs to play in the AHL. Like that’s again this entire preseason for Shawn Barren was play some games, get back to playing hockey. You’ve been away for 18 months with this injury. There was no universe where Barren was making the avalanche out of camp. Yeah. Just wasn’t going to happen. Yeah. And of course Kevin Brinley had a different kind of preseason. We could have been saying the same about him. But that’s a guy that just rolled in and is just like elbowing his way in. He’s forcing them to make a decision. Shawn Barren has a long way to go. It would have been G Brinley also has a full proseason under significantly harder for Shawn Bar. For Brinley, that’s a hey, this is a big step for him. For Shawn Barren, that would be I’m jumping the Grand Canyon with the step I’m taking from being injured my first pro year to going to that level. Yes. So, that’s that’s the only reason his cut didn’t surprise me today. I’ll I’ll put it to you that way. I agree with you. And it’s fine. Yeah. I don’t feel I don’t think it was particularly great. I don’t think it was bad. No, I don’t feel good or bad about Barren. I feel like what happened is sort of what I would thought was going to happen. Yeah. To expectation. Yeah, sure. Is fine. Um Yeah. the rest of this game. I I know we talked about him a little bit, but I do want to drive this home. I don’t know. Barring playing real regular NHL season games after today, I don’t know what else Bartikov has to do. Yeah. Like, he was awesome out there. He’s penalty killing, playing high energy, physical, scores a big goal. What more can you possibly ask out of the guy? I’m with you. Cool. We watched him. We watched him. He forced a couple of turnovers with an aggressive forch check. We were We were laughing because he got after a guy so bad on the forchack that he ended up dumping a puck into the bench trying to avoid him. Yep. Flipped it hard into the glass two feet in front of him in the corner like Yeah. And you’re like, “Good. That’s pretty good.” Yeah. That’s what you want. This goes from they have puck possession to now you have a faceoff. Yep. Was okay. started the game in the faceoff circle really well and then kind of trailed off a little bit. But yeah, let’s let’s see. I don’t actually know the numbers, so you can look that up. But this continues to be a guy that again, to be honest with you, regardless of what anyone says, I think there is some level of language barrier there that he’s simply just working through. And you know, you you can work around that with a lot of gestures and all of that, but he finished six of 12 overall, four of seven in the defensive zone. Okay, so fine, nothing to write home about, but four of seven in the defensive zone is 57%. I mean, that’s you’re in the money. Small sample sizes. I don’t want to make too much of it, right? But when you look at when you look at a guy’s face off numbers and you break them down, I always look at the overall number and go, “Okay, that’s where I’m starting.” But good or bad, I want to know how did he do it by zone. If you’re going to be on the fourth line, you need to be able to win defensive zone faceoffs. I don’t care if you went 10 out of 10 in the neutral zone. I don’t care. I I remove neutral zone faceoffs entirely except 3v3. That is what we mean when faceoffs only matter when they matter. Exactly. It’s like the perfect example of it. So yes, um him going four of seven in the defensive zone is good. This is where I caveat. Name one center that Dallas played today. Uh yeah, that’s my point. Is Oscar back a center? That’s my point. Is Oscar back a center? I don’t even know. Uh sure. Colin Blackwell takes faceoffs, too. That’s true. Was he really a center though? No, I don’t think any of these guys are I mean Nathan Bastian Colin Blackwell did he took their face offs. AJ some guy I’ve never heard of. Justin something or other took 11 faceoffs. This is what I mean though. Let me ask you something. Is this is this a rivalry? the ABS versus ABS and ABS and Dallas. Yeah, of course. Okay, we have it as a rivalry. If they don’t have it as a rivalry, I would understand because you need to there needs to be a balancing of the winning and losing for it to be a rivalry. I just thought it, do we have a rivalry with the St. Louis Blues? They’ve never beaten the ABS in a postseason series. But I thought, but they hate they hate our guts. That’s fair. But I just did think it was interesting for a preseason game. The crowd was in the crowd was upset with the Dallas Stars. Well, yeah, their general existence is a malaise on the entire planet. Okay, fair enough. Even without Petore, absolutely. They were they were a mathe. That’s not how you use that word. It is a it is a black mark on the entire planet. I mean, I think Dallas’s existence makes me more depressed probably. Yeah. Uh their existence is anathema to happiness. I think Malays is close enough. All right, we’ve made our point. I I just thought it was interesting that, but I would understand how they would feel that way. I totally understand that. But I was surprised and maybe this is I’m jaded and too deep into the hockey scene that I just don’t care about preseason games. Yeah, but the ABS crowd was genuinely, you know, during the anthem, the guy said, “F Dallas.” Oh, yeah. After the Stars nonsense. Yeah. After the game, there were dudes walking out of the arena singing na na na hey he hey he hey he hey hey goodbye like two star fans right like this is I didn’t think it would go so deep as a preseason game that the ABS where fandom was this into hating the Dallas Stars. Yeah. Um [Applause] as long as they keep playing each other this often in the postseason they’re going to hate each other. But it’s one-sided. What’s the difference? Until the ABS win one. What is the difference between Colorado and Dallas and Edmonton LA? LA hates Edmonton’s guts, but LA can’t win. So Edmons have been significantly more competitive than LA ever has. It doesn’t matter. You are correct. Dallas owns when you’re talking about that. Dallas Stars fans don’t care that the ABS won a cup in 2022. They care that they they own Colorado. That’s what Dallas Stars fans care about. Azer in the chat also saying they played really dirty tonight. Shout out Lean Bishell for getting uh misconduct in a pre-season game for a penalty that was blatantly a penalty. Like are are you are you in are we at the rodeo? Is this a is this like goat roping? What were you doing to Jackan? And then to have that level of reaction. He has him in a headlock and he rides him into the boards and he’s they’re riding around and Jackan’s trying to get free and the headlock and Jack Sean’s just like dude what like and the referee like is like that’s holding and Bishel gets immediately in his face and shouts at him the whole way to the box to the point where the ref is like all right an extra two minutes. Yep. So then thank you Liam Bishell now you made us sit through four minutes of that god aful power play. the true villain. That was his plan all along. Yeah, it was. He He was a villain in that series. He’s a villain to again tonight because that nonsense and four minutes of that atrocious power play. Jeez, I not Maybe maybe that’s my takeaway and why I should appreciate Nathan McKinnon coasting more in a preseason. Because if your options are that or McKinnon not caring, I think I’ll go with McKinnon not caring for a preseason game. Yeah. Um, if Nathan McKinnon was acting like that in a preseason game, we would be like, just relax right now. He’s the dog, so you know it’s not going to happen if he’s all lit up. Can’t even stay calm in a practice, right? But somehow he gets into a preseason game tonight and he’s the definition of zen. Just chilling. He didn’t get hurt. Successful game. A+. Didn’t get hurt in a preseason game. A+. Yeah, that that net was wide open. That that was a Nathan McKinnon needed to shoot that puck. Yeah, he did that in the playoffs, too. He sure did. Uh the last guy I actually wanted to talk about, and this is more comedy than anything, Scott Wedgewood faced seven shots across two periods. He did give up a goal. through 60 minutes roughly of preseason time, Trent Miner has a shut out. Yeah, I think Trent Miner’s good. It’s knowing you’re going into the season with Blackwood’s not going to be ready for game one. I, you know, however long it is ends up being however long it is. Yep. Through three preseason games, do you feel pretty comfortable going Wedgewood Minor? I do. If this is your tandem that you have to ride for the first, let’s just say two weeks of the season. Sure. I’m fine. Same. Don’t need to make a problem where there isn’t one yet. Yeah. So, shout out to Trent. I do think I hope Trent succeeds if for nothing else. That’s a great story. Yeah. Late round pick. Guy earns a contract in the last year of his eligibility. Yeah. Works his way through the ECHL. Works his way through the AHL. Gets his first NHL games last year. Yeah. I mean, he’s This is the path that we never see an ABS prospect take. It’s true. And never. Mine are the one doing it. Yeah. He’s doing just fine. So, positive vibes there on the ABS net. It’s always going to hurt a little bit that they took him over Dustin Wolf, though. There’s a guy who’s better. There’s there’s a guy who’s better for sure, but that does hurt. Such is life. They got NBA coming. It’ll be fine. Yeah. Trent Miner can’t stop thinking about that. Yeah. He knows he’s got exactly six months. Yeah. He’s like, “This is it. We got to do it.” Yep. We got to do it. Uh winding down the conversation here. The ABS are scheduled to play two of their last preseason games on the road. Are they hanging the guys around a little bit to go take some road games? Yeah, sure. Okay, just checking. Yeah, I don’t think we expect Nathan McKinnon to play too many more. Maybe one more preseason game of these last three. So, yeah, they’re going to need some bodies still is all I’m saying. Yeah, you get into that. I I guess the only other conversation in this is Sam Molinsky did not play in this game, which we have talked multiple times about if you’re going to play him on the left side, can you get him as many reps as humanly possible? I disagree with them not playing him tonight. Yeah, I think that’s a fair statement. We’ll see. I will say, oh my god, if if Katon Middleton and Ronnie Adard are ever appearing in an NHL game, do your thing. You’re in trouble. Awful. Awful, dude. They extended so many possessions just by not being able to get a puck. There’s no feet. There’s not enough puck skill. There’s not. And I’m not saying they can’t play a role in the NHL, but they can’t be together. Yeah. Just raw. I mean, oh my gosh, it was rough. I was like, you would need to get so deep into the injury list for these guys to be there together. But thank goodness cuz yikes. Also, Ballerina, Kale Mar’s brother plays forward, just so you know. So funny. They had Kale Mar. So what he’s referring to, they had Kale Mar trivia in the arena. Oh, what age was he when he debuted? Uh, what pick was he when he was drafted? What’s his dog’s name? What position does his brother play? And then they said he played defense. Apparently Taylor Macar is a defenseman. He is not. So the Dallas Stars broadcast thought Kale Mar is the one who was hurt and ball arena oper. So we’re a little messed up on the Macar brothers right now. Mars are confusing. All right, I get it. It’s hard to track. I feel very confused a lot of times when I watch Kell Mar. It makes me feel feelings I am unfamiliar with. We’re not in overtime yet, so I’m not going to say what I was about to say. But yeah, what are we two minutes away? Yeah, a minute away. All right, we’ll just let it ride. We did get one super chat tonight from Melanie who says, “Excited for the season. Thanks for your content all summer. Take care. Appreciate you, Melanie. She’s always hanging out.” Everybody else goes dark. We grind. Yep. We out here. We grind five days a week. And can I tell you how glad I am? It’s no longer August and we’re doing this five days a week. I will say uh just since I know we are winding down, it has been so much fun being back in Denver, man. Hell yeah. Uh the show the shows over the last couple of weeks have been a lot of fun. It was great. Uh I am leaving for home tomorrow. So I know everybody was kind of been asking me like what Oh, are you back? Are you I am not. Um I was just here for the preseason stuff. We know you’ll at least be back in town for the sweet takeover. So yes, I will be back in January. Um, but I am leaving in the morning to go back to uh my forest. I’m going back to humidity. Can we really call it a forest? Yes, I’ve showed you where I live, man. It’s a forest. You’re not wrong. You’re not wrong. Go out onto the back porch and deer in the yard. We are headed into overtime here. Make sure you continue the conversation online at ddnvr.com. Don’t have too much more to add, but I did want to say great time to become a diehard right now. Yeah. Uh we got a sale going on. You can either get in real cheap or if you want a new hat, the DNVR hat is out there. I think it’s 59 bucks for the new hat and your die hard membership for the year. Yep. So, it’s a great deal to get in there. Cheaper one is uh free t-shirt and the Die Hard membership. So, and that one’s like 36 bucks, which is a ridiculously good deal. So, yeah, make sure you’re getting in doing that. Good deal. AJ has a million pieces. Yeah, I will write when I get back home. I’m not writing about tonight. I’m getting up early in the morning and hitting the road. I have a 29 hour drive. Not to spoil anything, but I think we’ve got some pretty cool ideas for some roundts and stuff coming up, too. So, yeah, I am excited about the content that we have cooking up in the uh I guess this season. I say the next few weeks, but I guess it’s this season. Yep, we got it all. We got our season preview coming out next week. maybe start of the week after maybe to first week of October. We’ll put it to you that way. Uh that’s on the way. So you guys will have that content. Bunch of other stuff coming your way too. So hopefully you guys will keep it locked in here. One last shout out. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Yes. Uh super awesome organization. We’re doing a fundraiser for them all month long here on YouTube. You can donate on the sidebar or there’s a link down in the description. Go give your money to a good cause. Go support the kids. If you really want to get in with it, you can become a big on their website as well. So check them out. BB BBBS.org today to help support an awesome cause. That’s going to do it. It is 9:00 and we’re going to get out of here before the CU crowd cheers for another touchdown. So I I can’t hear that fight song again. Yeah, we appreciate y’all. 200 of you here for a preseason postgame. That’s awesome to see. I’m ready to get this season rolling. We appreciate y’all. This has been the DNVR Avalanche podcast and we will talk to you I guess Tuesday. We’re off Monday. So yeah, we’ll see you Tuesday. [Music] [Applause] [Music]

To bad we couldn’t do this like 4 months ago lmao
I'm not calling Haxtol a hack off of this one game, where they've just started doing full special teams practice, and it was like a composite PP1/2 for the top unit and the Eagles' PP1 for the second unit(sans Polin and Tynan). Wasn't expecting much, didn't get much. Fun game though, especially seeing Brindley make a case for himself.
