🔴LIVE 🔴Miami Marlins vs New York Mets Game Highlights (9/26/25) | MLB /MLB THE SHOW 25
just about ready to roll. And today’s starting pitcher, Kane Gibson. Yeah. And as Whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, they’re taking the mound. This is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate. And I expect him to be good in this one. Francisco Lindor leading things off and takes a strike. fouled off. He was late. Got him swinging. stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it. Not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Juan Sodto in the box now. No balls in a strike. There’s no way around it. Sodto is one of the most exciting players in baseball. His hitting skills are so advanced. You’d think he’d played in Major League Baseball in a different life or something. Next pitch misses way outside. One out. Base is empty. Next offering upstairs. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high in the dirt. And that’s ball three. up the middle. Lopez handles, throws to first. Two quick outs in the top of the first here tonight. Here’s a Mets lineup. Now, Chris, this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come. They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Petonzo in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Two out. Space is empty. That slider breaking in can be a tricky pitch. If you don’t finish it and have that bite at the end and it stays out over the plate, it can get hit a long way. But that was a good one right there. Kicks and deals. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That’s back. And that one is out of here. He’ll circle the bases and the Mets jump in front. It’s one- nothing. It’s no surprise this guy has won the home run derby multiple times. He was born to hit him. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Base is empty with two away. And now the DH Mark Ventos swing and a miss as he was late. Gibson 27 years old and he was a 10th round pick in 2022. Two down to swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. That in fifth, the left fielder number nine, Brandon. Two outs, runner at first. Here’s Brandon NMO and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] And there’s a strike on the outside corner and the count is 0 and two. Bentos off of first with two away. [Applause] Stays alive. [Applause] Two outs. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Music] [Applause] [Music] This one in the air. Lopez. He’s got it. And that is that. The Mets do pick up a run on this solo blast. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Lone Depot Park and towing the slab in this one, David Peterson. Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness. if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down. You know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earned run average. Jacob Marcy leading things off and takes the strike. Here comes the 01. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] 0 and two now. And a slider misses down and away. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. spoils that one and it remains two and two in the air out towards right center. Taylor moving under it, brings it in and there’s one away. And time now for the Marlins lineup. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Conor Norby and Boo. He was a force over the last month and OPS over a thousand, man. Just really dialed in at the plate right now. So capable of doing major damage every time he steps in the box. Tell you what, I always enjoy watching this guy do his thing. And first off is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. Fast ball is outside. Right through there for a strike. A one two count. All he’s seen as fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Outside low. Two and two. [Applause] Bounced up the middle. The throw to first. Two out. Batting third. The second baseman, Xavier Edwards. Two outs. Base is empty. And now for the Marlins. Xavier Edwards. Let’s go, Xavier. He swings and fouls one off. That one misses and it’s one and one. Swanging a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Sodto makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Back here in Miami. Second inning, set to go. And stepping in for New York. Luis Torres. Gibson back to work. There’s the strike. [Applause] Ball one there. Ricky Holiday, our umpire behind the dish. Known as pretty fair umpire for both hitters and pitchers. Yeah, I think that’s right. Boo. There is a little inconsistency on the corners of the plate. You can’t always be sure how it’s going to go with those borderline pitches as the game progresses on the corner for a strike. One and two. Got him. And one out now. Here’s the third base, Brett Batty. Brett Batty. And first offering is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. That one back up the middle and it gets through. just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. So digging in Tyrone Taylor that finds the mark on the inside corner. Miami. There’s the strike. Bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. Conai makes the catch and there’s two away. [Applause] Batting n the second baseman, Luis Anel Akuna. Luis Anel Auna up now for the Mets. And that’s through their first strike. 0 and one. Baiten leads off first with two down to the inning. Next pitch is downstairs. One and one. Just missed. The two-1 is high. Francisco Lindor waiting to hit for the Mets. Next offering is fouled back. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitter’s got to stay focused on the pitch. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner in the scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. So the lineup flips over and the batter will be the shorts stop. Francisco Lindor struck out swinging his first time. Fast for a strike. That one fouled off. Two aboard, two outs. blows the high heat past them. That’s a strike out. Two left on. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Mets one and the Marlins nothing. And we’re back into the bottom of the second. And here’s the rookie catcher, Liam Hicks. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] And they’re swinging a miss. Kelly just threw that fast ball by him, elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. The wind, the kick, and the one-two. And a good eye there. Really good take especially with two strikes. [Music] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Music] Fights it off. He’ll see another switch through that one. It’s a strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Next to hit, Otto Lopez right through there for a strike. This one in the air. Ben settles under it and there are two outs. Got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open. Backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Next to hit Griffin Con center field. Taylor gets under it and that is the third out of the inning. We played two innings. It’s one to nothing. Top half of the third inning. And stepping in for New York, Juan Sodto. Sodto. And that drops in for a strike. Carl, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. Outside low. And that’s ball one. This one in the air. Paulie moving under this one. And out number one on the grab. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Here’s Pete Alonzo. He’s already homerred in this game. And that finds the mark on the outside corner. That’s strike one. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. Ball two. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here. Two two. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. check swing on the 22 appeal to first and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Now batting two down base is empty. Now it’s the DH. Mark Vientos one for one with a single so far and delivers outside. [Music] Hot shot to third. Fires across the diamond and the Mets go one, two, three. Three up, three down for him. There we head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Mets one and the Marlins nothing. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And stepping in is the speedy Conor Norby. Norby. Come on pulls that one foul. Pitch in the dirt and it’s a ball and a strike. One and one. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Two strike. Good eye right there. That’s good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. on the ground to third. Toss to Alonzo. One up, one down. Batting the left fielder, Troy Johnston. Troy Johnston the next up for the Marlins. Come on, Troy. This one high in the air to left center. NMO ranging after it. He’s got it. Two down. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. And now Graham Paulie and the first pitch misses for ball one. And another ball backto-back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. And a foul ball on the ground right side and it’s through for a hit and that keeps the inning going. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Digging in, Jacob Marcy. Counts one and0. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. The next pitch misses and the count now two and nothing. [Music] And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Two balls, one strike. Swinging a ball hammered left field. NMO going back on it and gone. And they grab the lead. It’s 2-1. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. [Applause] I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Two outs, nobody on. And next is the designated hitter, Augustine Ramirez. Foul ball there. Next offering is in for a strike. That one just misses. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. [Music] and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. And it’s now a two-run ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started now. the left fielder Brandon NMO. [Music] NMO in his ninth season, 31 years old, and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in the state of Wyoming. [Applause] pitches in the dirt and the count is one and two [Music] in the air right field. Pretty well struck. That one back there onto the track and he makes the catch. Now that they get Luis Tor. Here’s the catcher to hit. Luis Torren 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. And next for the Mets, Brett Batty. And he’s already singled in this game. Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] Miami’s bullpen with some action. Ryan Weathers, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Junk, the right-hander, also getting loose. Torren leads off first with one away. [Applause] Highfly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That one’s deep. And that’s a home run into the upper deck. Into the second deck it goes. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 3-2. Boo. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. When you’re lacking velocity, it’s so critical that you move the ball around, change speeds, even try to trick the hitter at times. But when you give up a home run right there, manager doesn’t have a lot of patience because the velocity is not there to overcome and get the swing and miss. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Kade Gibson gives way and a decent effort considering he’s normally a reliever. Back with the new pitcher in a minute. now pitching forward. So, out of the pen comes the rightander, Michael Peterson, and he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. So, one out, nobody on. Tyrone Taylor will hit next. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Still only one out here in the inning. I got a ball. One strike. Swing at a line drive. Ripped right center field and it looks like trouble. Taylor races for second, not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay, the tag, and he’s out trying for three. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. He probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. [Applause] Two outs, space is empty. Luis Anel Akuna up now for the Mets. And that drops in for a strike. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. Top half of inning number four. swing and that ball smashed on a line. Squeezes it and that is that. Mets had two runs on this blast. It’s now a 32 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show [Applause] back here at Lone Depot Park. John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Xavier Edwards. Come on, Miami. [Applause] And that one upstairs, ball one. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Swings through that one out in front that time. You know, these Marlins doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count. And they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Swing and a popup. Akuna hauls it in for the owl. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. And up next for Miami, Liam Hicks struck out swinging his first time. That catches the corner. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Music] That’s a ball. One and one. Next offering is in for a strike. Sea strikes him out for the second time today. Oh, that slider was way out of the zone. For me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking it into the zone, and then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so, when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early, and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. Otto Lopez, the next up for the Marlins. And a strike on the outside edge. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Two down and that is out of play. [Music] That’s inside the count now even up. 32. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. And the Marlins down quietly. They’re down three-2. Ready now for the fifth inning. Now Francisco Lindor. You talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list. Peterson back to work and that’s downstairs and it’s one and0. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. still able to come through behind in the count right there. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Wadto now for two in this one. First pitch not close. And as well lots of pop in that bat. So you combine the slug with really good defense. Just missed. Nobody out. Runner at first and misses inside. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. And ball four, two aboard. Oh, we’ve seen this recipe cook up a big inning plenty of times. Two runners on, nobody out, and they’re in the heart of their order. It’s just a great opportunity to put up a crooked number. [Applause] Alonzo up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. [Music] That won’t hammer but pulled foul. Lindor at second. Sodto at first with no outs. Little bit low and it’s two and one. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Two and one now. Next offering misses down and away. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Music] in for a strike. Now it’s three and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. First and second here. No outs. Laser base hit as the stop sign goes up at third. Everything came together for him. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did, and he did it perfectly. Now the base is loaded. Big opportunity for them to break this game open. Vientos the next to hit takes low for a ball. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. One strike. And the next pitch is way outside. Look, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. The two-1 all loaded up and we’re in the top of the fifth. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations and right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. He’s really gotten himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall as definitely getting away from him. So bases all loaded up. Here’s the left fielder Brandon NMO. Golden opportunity right here. That just misses and that is ball. The opportunity for a huge inning exists right here. Bases loaded, nobody out. But as a hitter, can’t be over anxious. That pitcher is up against the wall. Make him come to you. That one is absolutely belted. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Rounds third headed for the plate. Relay throw home. Safe at the plate and the lead is up to five. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Michael Peterson is done and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching number 66 taking over on the mound. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers. But I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s the catcher for the Mets. Luis Torren. Just missed. Well, these Mets putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Inside just missed. So, definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. And he takes a strike. [Music] That one out to right and that drops foul and ball four to a board. You get a walk and you get a walk. Everyone gets a walk. Boo. Brett Batty. First and second, no outs. So up next for New York, Brett Batty [Applause] [Music] and that one is inside. No outs. Runners at first and second in the dirt but kept close. [Music] Here’s [Music] [Applause] a 200 and he can’t come up with it. No throw. Save at first and we’ll see if it’s an error. Well, I can understand the defense right there trying to cut off that lead runner at third, but a good jump and an excellent finish for the base runner to get in there safely. Base is loaded. Nobody out. And stepping in for New York, Tyrone Taylor delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. One’s the count. Here we go. Defense. Oh, one skips in and excellent work to corral that one. Could have been dangerous. [Applause] Ground ball could be two. Feeds to second. Out there to first. Save. It’s a fieldielder’s choice and an RBI. Auna. Here’s the second base, Luis Anel Akuna. He’s 0 for one and he pumps in a strike. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. And now it’s even up. First and third, one down. And now two balls in a strike. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. That one outside and the count is three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. He makes the grab. Runner tags for home. He’ll score the sack fly and it’s 92. Well, he hit that one pretty well. I think it would have been a lot more than a sack fly if not for that nice play by the outfielder to track it down. Good job of getting the run in. Back to the top of the Mets order. Now up to Francisco Lindor. One for three. [Applause] Highfly ball out to center field. Marcy and that is that. So in the end, 10 come to the plate. Six of them come around to score. Last half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Mets nine and the Marlins two. Bottom of the inning at the plate for Miami. Griffin Griffin. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. swing and a ball popped up. Akuna hauls it in and there’s one away. Third baseman number one Connor Connor Norby. First time up he grounded to third. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. First pitch misses. Yeah, that’s fouled off. One down. Base is empty. And that misses. Two and one. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Whips it to first on the run. Pretty nice play there. Showing us right there why he’s considered one of the best middle infielders in the sport. That’s always a tough play going up the middle on the backhand. But what really made this play happen was that quick release, smooth exchange and that was as smooth as it gets and it had to be with the wheels going down the line. Now here is Troy Johnston fires over to first. Marlins set down in order. Nothing doing for the Marlins. They’re down seven. It’s 92 and we’re back all set for the top of the sixth. Here’s Juan Stoodto. First pitch just misses. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Calvin Foscher getting ready to go. Junk getting loose as well. Just missed. Got to be real careful here. 20. He’s hunting for his pitch. [Music] Base hit. That was smoke through the infield. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Man at first and now it’s the polar bear Pete Lonzo. He’s already homerred here in this one. Now a pop up on the infield. Holly and it’s caught for the out. Now batting the designated hitter, Mark Vientos. And now it’s Mark Vientos. Clips the corner. It’s 0 and one. Back door with the breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Leads off first with one away. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. Two strikes. Now one miss on the ground to the left. Here’s Edwards for one. And it’s a double play to end the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the six. It’s the Mets nine and the Marlins two. [Applause] Back here in Miami, we go bottom six. And now for the Marlins, Graham Paulie. Holly just missed one and it’s fouled away. The 1-1 foul ball. Pitch misses inside. Two and two. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. This guy will throw any pitch in any count. 3-2. He goes off speed. Gets the out. The center fielder, Jacob Marcy, Jacob Marcy, the next up for the Marlins. That one finds the zone. 0 and one. One down. Base is empty. Swung on. Belted. That one back there. Out of here. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 93. [Applause] That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap and know there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Ramirez stands in now and watches strike one. [Applause] Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field. He’s got it and there’s two away. Now batting second baseman Xavier Edwards. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. [Applause] Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. One’s the count. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the bottom of the six. Check swing called strike. No balls, two strikes. Foul ball still 0 and two. [Applause] Swings and miss has struck him out. One for the Marlins on the solo shot. It’s now a 93 ball game. Well, this game isn’t very close. Singy, let’s see if we got any messages from those tuning in today. I know we got some good stuff in there. Do you collect baseball cards? You know, when I was a kid, I used to put them in my back tire of my bicycle so it would sound like a motorcycle. Probably ruined some good cards back then, but don’t really have much of a collection. And the other day I came across a binder that my wife had in one of the drawers and my son’s got some baseball cards. So we’ll be looking to see if there’s any kind of retirement income in there. Looked to me like he got on the side of the ball a little too much right there. Maybe a little too casual as well with the throwing motion. And when you don’t stay on top of the ball and really get out front and finish with a good release point, it’s very easy to lose control of it to either side. And now Luis Torren. So my dad told me that he had a bunch of Mickey man rookie cards and a whole bunch of valuable cards and his mom tossed them because well you know what did she know? So I made my mom keep all my baseball cards and I really don’t have any that are valuable and that story stunk by me anyway. And there’s a ball. One ball, two strikes the count. That’s off the inside corner and the count is even. Two and two. Rudder at first with no outs here in the air left field. Johnston under this one makes the grab. One down. The third baseman number seven, Brett Batty. Brett Batty now at the plate. Three for three, two singles and a homer. just missed. [Music] Ground ball left side and that’s a fair ball. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control. And it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tee where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. And now it’s going to be Tyrone Taylor. NMO on second. Batty at first. One gone. line drive and that’s a base hit out into center field headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Save and now second and third with one gone. Backto back base hits just a cookie down the middle. I mean those are the ones you dream about. Once in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity right on top of it. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Number 66 will depart and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third. So looking for some help there. Back in a minute. Now pitching for and Ryan Weathers is coming on. This southpaw has been really good against left-handed hitters. Weather So, one out with two aboard. Now, it’s the second baseman, Luis Sonel Akuna. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Counts one and0. Second and third, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. [Applause] That one down the line and that’s just fouled. Two on, one out. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] And that’s outside. [Applause] Good eye in that spot. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. [Applause] Weathers fires, keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Ninth pitch of the atbat do next. Swinging a ground ball. Gets it to first. He made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat. Now batting shorts stop Francisco Lindor. Here’s Francisco Lindor. Oh, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. That’s a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. [Applause] Next one misses. One and two to count. His understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close O2 fastball. I just don’t know how you take that. [Applause] This one in the air right field. Conai makes the grab on the run. One run in the inning, but they lead two. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Mets 10 and the Marlins three. [Music] And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the catcher, Liam Hicks. just missed. Stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Number 26. The rookie right-hander is getting loose. Helley, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Strike on the inside corner and the count one and one. Big at bat right here. He did the team thing. took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. That misses the zone. Ball two. [Music] Just misses with that one. fouled off again and it remains three and two. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Caught him looking for the K. Well, they’ve had a great plan of attack for him tonight. I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach, just frustrating for him up there. You strike out a guy three times in a game. I think that guy’s got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach, figure out how they’re beating him, make this adjustment really quick cuz Word will get around the league in a hurry. Otto Lopez the next to hit. Swinging a highf fly ball deep left field. NMO going back on it and that one’s gone. a laser to left. His 16th homer of the year. It’s 104. First pitch swinging and he got the fast ball. He knew exactly what to do with it, too. [Applause] With the low 90s fast, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient. Waited for it. was like BP all over again. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. David Peterson out of the game. Not his best performance, but he leaves with the lead. And we’ll get a new arm into the game after this. The Mets with a new arm on the mound. Number 26. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. There we go. And now Griffin Con [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] That misses and now it’s even one and one. [Applause] ripped on the ground to second. Slings to first in time. Third baseman number one, Connor Norby. So, two down now. And here is Connor Norby has grounded out a couple of times. [Applause] on the outside corner. Strike one and one. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh swing and a miss as he was late that time. I think he was sitting off speed there. Two strike. that misses and it’s two and two [Applause] and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball, but a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability. 104 New York. Back after this on the show. ready to begin the eighth. And now it’s oneto Ryan Weathers will get back to work and that’s in for a strike. Oh, that pitch is out. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Strike three. Went back to the sweeper and got the strike out. Now batting the first. So digging in Pete Alonzo. Alonzo. And that’s a little bit high. One and0. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Mark Vientos up now for the Mets at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. [Applause] And a big swing and a miss. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. Now batting left fielder Brandon and next for the Mets Brandon NMO [Music] swinging a ball driven out to center. That’s back there and it is gone. A towering shot to center. His 26th of the year. It’s 134. first pitch change up and he was all over it. Not sure if he was expecting off speed or not, but he picked up on the velocity and punished it. Got to keep that front shoulder closed and your body square to the plate, especially when you’re facing a left-hander. He did all those things until the very last moment where that hip just popped. Hands came through. Nice little lag to it. Carried out nicely. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Ryan Weathers done for the night. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now pitching for the pitcher for the Marlins, Calvin Fosch. The offense will need to be ready for the breaking stuff. He’s got a great curveball. One out. Base is empty. Luis Torren digs in now. That clips the corner. Plenty of offense in this one. Singy. I guess you’d say kind of what we expected though. Well, this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as lopsided as this. Um, but yeah, you definitely expected to see some offense coming up. One down, base is empty. This one popped up. Lopez and there’s two away. Now batting third base. Two down, base is empty. So up next for New York, Brett Batty. [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] That one inside at count one and two signs of activity. in the pen for the Marlins. George Soraniano, the young right-hander up and throwing. Junk also throwing. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across and we’re in the top of the eighth. And that skips in the dirt. Still two and two after the foul ball. Good job to fight that one off. That’s down and in. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw and they don’t get the out. Now batting Tyrone Taylor getting ready to hit. Taylor. That one missed. Baiten off of first with two away and that’s in the dirt. [Applause] Too high. Oh. [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball. Pretty well struck right field. Nabs it and that’s the third up. Oh man, amazing catch to end the inning. As a former outfielder, I’m feeling proud right now. Saw the wall, didn’t get afraid, held on to the ball. back here at lone deep in the park. Now the left fielder Troy Johnston Johnston drive and that’s base hit out into left center field and the leadoff man aboard. [Applause] Now batting the first baseman, Graham Paulie Paulie right through there for a strike. [Music] Ball one there. I got a ball. for one strike. That’s inside. And that’s ball two. The Mets up big in this one here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Swings through that one for strike two. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. Still try to get that ground ball double play. stays alive. All right, Miami. Comes a two- two foul ball left side. He’ll see another swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, that high forcing fast ball, it’s become such a staple as a strikeout pitch over the years. And what’s so tough as a hitter is that you see it extremely well. The problem is the velocity and spin rate just happens to jump by you. You expand your zone, you don’t stay tall on the backside, and you’re really not even able to make contact. If you do, many times it’s a popup. Two balls, no strikes to count. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Taylor makes the grab and there’s two gone. So, a man aboard and now here’s the Marlins D. Augustine Ramirez for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And that’s in there for strike one. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. And that is that and we’re back leading off Luis Anel Auna. [Applause] Foscher back to work. Here’s a rocket out to left. Johnston makes the catch and there’s one goal. Sometimes you want to be aggressive early in the at bat. He was right there. Hard line out. First pitch of the inning. No reward, but hey, you got to keep swinging it. And now it’s Frankie Lindor. Right through there for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. [Applause] Popped up. [Applause] Edwards makes the grab and there’s two down. Two outs. Base is empty. Juan Sodto up now for the Mets. Here we go. Miami. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. And another ball. Two balls, no strike. Hey, two balls, one strike [Music] on the corner for a strike. And they’ll do it again. [Applause] And it remains two and two. That’s inside. Pete Alonzo would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. Two outs on the ground right side. Edwards onto first and the inning is over. Nothing doing here this half. Hard to the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. The Mets leaded 134. Back here in Miami, bottom nine. And now it’s the switch inning second baseman Xavier Edwards off the mark there. Ball one. [Applause] There’s the strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] [Applause] Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Now batting Hicks now at the plate 0 for three with three strikeouts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Base is empty, one away. The last half of inning number nine. [Applause] hit hard on the ground to the right side and he handles it himself for the out. The batter number six, shortstop, Otto Lopez. Marlins down to their final out. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. Fast for a strike. Swag and a miss. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. And downstairs, the fish down to their final strike. Outside low. Now two and two. Got him. And that’s the ball game. After a couple of times through the order, this team really figured it out with the bats. A huge fifth inning and that was all they really needed to get this victory today. Really nice job to pick up the W today. 134 is your final for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us.
