Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles: Injury News, Matchups, Players To Watch | NFL Week 1 Preview

[Music] It is finally a real game day once again in the NFL. The Cowboys visiting the Eagles to open up the 2025 NFL season later tonight. It’s worth mentioning, by the way, Eagles now an 8 and a half point favorite in this one. We’re going to discuss players and matchups to watch in this particular game. Cowboys, the heavy road underdogs. We will be live for this game just like we will be live for every single Cowboys football game. 7 PM Eastern time start tonight. You know, maybe a little bit longer for some other games, but we’ll go an hour 20, which might become a full hour and a half given the pregame ceremony stuff they’re going to do. Hit that sub button so you don’t miss out and join us for our always fun watch parties. Before we get into players to watch or I should say match to watch them players to watch. Injury news all good for the Cowboys. Almost all good for the Cowboys and Eagles. Trayvon Diggs will play. No designation. Same with Tyler Gton and Brevin Span for the two knee injuries and the ankle injury are fine. Perion Winfrey was ruled out Wednesday afternoon with his back stiffness which I am a little bit worried about but that is a second third string DT. So all in all pretty good for the Cowboys. Same for Philadelphia. Andrew Makuba, no designation. Landon Dickerson, no designation. Tanner McKe has been ruled out with a thumb injury. That’s a backup quarterback, bigger issues if he was even going to be a factor in it to begin with. So, no concerns there. Jaylen Carter, no designation. Josh Uche. So, both teams very healthy going into this week one matchup. Let’s dive into some of the particular matchups to watch in this one. Number one for me is Dak Prescott versus Vic Fangio. And this is also Brian Shottnimer. I don’t think it’s fair to just put it all on the quarterback when schematics drive so much of of of the game in the NFL. On a one hand, you have one of the most successful division quarterbacks in the entire NFL. Dak Prescott has dominated in the NFC East. He’s 33 and8 in his career. It’s wildly impressive. Yeah, the Giants and Commanders have been bad. He’s also nine and four against Philadelphia. That’s really good. To be fair, we haven’t had very many Dak versus Herz games. They’ve had injuries between them. At least we’re kind of guaranteeing that going into week one at long last. Dak’s played against Vic Fangio’s or Vic Fangio’s defenses three times. Bears when he was a DC, Broncos when he was the head coach in 2021, Dolphins in 2023. Cowboys are one and two in those games. And Dak’s had some issues. just 7.7 yards per attempt. Lower than expected completion rates. The touchdowns to turnover ratio is fine, but the touchdowns themselves are pretty high. Some of the Fangio zone coverages have given the Cowboys issues. They’ve done a lot of too high shell stuff, whether it’s cover four, cover six, etc. And the cover six in particular, I think, can be really good. Cowboys didn’t have answers for that uh in in terms of the schemes of getting guys open. I think it also trick Dak a few times. I expect we’ll see more of that against the Philadelphia Eagles. If they’re going to go to I shell stuff, run the ball. But can they? And we’ll talk about that more in depth here in a little bit. Who we got in week one? C for the Cowboys, E for the Eagles. Let me know at the pinned comment of today’s show. C for the Cowboys, E for the Eagles. Next matchup to watch, the Cowboys against them against themselves starting slowly. Now, Philadelphia has not been a slow starting team as it relates to week one. In fact, Nick Serriani is 4 and0 in season openers as the Philadelphia Eagles head coach. He’s always done a pretty good job getting his team ready to play in week one. Even though the Eagles also don’t play their starters in the preseason at times, that’s been an issue for the Cowboys. And they’ve won their last two week one games. That was against the Browns and Giants, two of the worst teams in football that season. They’ve lost games against the Bucks twice. The Rams, those were some of the better teams, like especially that 2021 2020 game. Bad offensive PI call cost the Cowboys a win. They’ve played the Giants a lot, which is always kind of funny. You got you have to start hot or else it’s going to have some of the issues we’ve seen in the past for this Cowboys team. Next matchup, and this could have just been straight up offensive line versus defensive line, but I wanted to focus on Jaylen Carter and Tyler Booker because if I am Philadelphia, my best defensive player, apologies to Zack Bond and Quinon Mitchell, but the best guy up front is Jaylen Carter. He’s awesome. He is disruptive. He is impactful. Don’t let those sack numbers fool you. This guy is becoming one of the best defensive tackles in football. If I were Philadelphia and it’s third and eight, I am putting him against Tyler Booker. In fact, I’m probably gonna line him up there as much as possible because Booker is a first round pick. I’m excited about his potential. He’s played 28 snaps in the preseason. It’s like three or four drives. Like, not good drives, I should say. It’s not It’s not a lot. Like, you probably should consider trying to help, but you have to help steal Tyler Get a little bit there. If I’m in Philadelphia, I’m trying to get Booker on on Carter one-on-one to start, seeing how it’s going, that matchup is going to matter because if there’s pressure in the face of Dak, he has issues like most quarterbacks tend to do. Good thing that the Cowboys have Trayvon Diggs back. I think they will need him in particular in their nickel package, everything there. Eagles have one of, if not the best wide receiving cores in football. AJ Brown, Devont Smith. I think that the the two guys in Cincinnati are the best duo, but we’re talking about Brown and Smith in the top five no matter what. Jan Dodson, John Neti are serviceable at minimum as wide receiver threes. That’s a good grouping. I didn’t want to put Kir Elum on AJ Brown/Dont Smith. Now, you’ll have to do that at some point, but I don’t want to have the entire game of like, you know, you’re trotting out Bridges or Stewart in the in the or Stewart in the slot and he’s getting Devont Smith or AJ Brown. Like, that’s a bad matchup. So, I am glad the Cowboys are healthier now at corner. The inverse of that matchup, of course, is the wide receivers for the Cowboys against the Eagles corners. I think there is a potential mismatch the Cowboys can attempt to exploit in this particular game. CDI Lamb, George Pickkins are going to be the top two. Cavvante Turpin, I would make this more of a Cavante Turpin game at wide receiver. The reason I would do that is cuz I think he’s going to mostly play in the slot which would put CD Lamb on the outside. Now they’ll probably do plenty of zone Philadelphia but they go man you know you’re going to line up Cooper Jeene in the nickel. He’s a really good nickel. So if I can almost sacrifice Cavante Turpin as my slot receiver against Cooper Deene. Quinn Mitchell can’t cover both George Pickins and Lamb at the same time. Can’t happen. So there should be moments when it’s both Lamb and Pickins on the outside and trying your best to get Adori Jackson who’s probably going to start over Keley Ringo and Jakori Benu who aren’t great either. Try your best to get Lamb or Pickkins matched up on Jackson. Try to pick on the weak link of that Eagles quarterback room. Easier said than done. You can scheme around it, but they they should try that. Both these wide receiving cores are awesome. Uh it’s kind of like flavor of ice cream. Is is vanilla or chocolate better? Who has the better wide receiving core? DAL for the Cowboys, PHI for the Eagles. Let’s dive into some players to watch. We’re going to do a theme today. All newcomers on today’s show. Number five is Kenneth Murray, the linebacker. We haven’t actually seen him yet outside of training camp a little bit with the Dallas Cowboys. He was acquired via trade in the offseason. Did not play at all in the preseason. I’m curious if Samborn or Murray end up having the green dot. There’s I think some been some mixing and matching there to an extent. Not sure how much it really ends up mattering, but the Eagles are going to want to run the football. They’re going to do play action. Murray has to play well, assuming he’s kept clean. More on that in a little bit. We kind of mentioned him once already, but I want to stick the theme. George Pickkins, you know, if they try to put Deene/Mitchell on Lamb, I do wonder if you can find a way to generate favorable matchups with George Pickkins in this game. Can you find a way to get him on Dory Jackson? if you can. I think that matchup is wildly in favor of George. I I think that favors him significantly. We’ve seen him do some really good stuff with with Pittsburgh. Now, it’s with Dallas. It’s by far the best quarterback he’s had. They seem to develop some chemistry as camp went on. I would like it if the Cowboys can you’re probably going to have to lean on that aerial attack. They’re probably going to need some big stuff out of Pickins and Lamb and everyone else in this passing offense. George or Jake Ferguson as well. Prediction time. Who scores the first touchdown for the Dallas Cowboys? Let me know in the comments section of today’s show. Player to watch number three, a big focal point of your run defense now is Kenny Clark, the acquired trade, the acquired via trade defense tackle from the Packers. I don’t think it’s fair to expect one player to fix everything about my run defense, but the Cowboys did kind of set that up when they’re talking about Clark. He should help though. Now, you still need your edges and your linebackers and everybody else involved to be a contributable piece to that run defense, but I do think Kenny Clark helps this defensive attack room go from, boy, you got one player you like to, okay, I feel actually pretty darn good about this defensive tackle room. He’s a little bit older than most. He’s been in the league for a long time. He came in pretty young. He’s still good. Was hurt last year. I have pretty high expectations for Kenny Clark. Number two is Javvante Williams. Remember how I mentioned like if you’re seeing a lot of too high shell coverage, the simplest way to beat that is just to run the ball and just attack and smashmouth it. Well, if you do that, it’s going to have to come with Javvant Williams carrying the rock for the most part. It’d be nice to put Jaden Blue on here, but Williams didn’t play in the preseason either. Was coming off a kind of two not great years in Denver, but he can pass protect. He can do third down stuff for you, too. Cowboys have pretty much anointed him as the number one back. Hopefully, he lives up to that. What is your confidence level in the Cowboys beating the Eagles? Let me know in the comments section of today’s show. 1 to 10 is your scale. I am totally cheating at number one. It’s not even a player, although he did play football a long time ago. That’s head coach Brian Shottenheimer. We didn’t see anything of note from the offense in the preseason. It was all vanilla. As Shottenheimer said, this is our first true look at the Cowboys offense under his guidance. How does that look? How does he manage being the head coach and the play caller for the first time in his career? He hasn’t done that. Hasn’t been a play caller in a pretty long time as well. How does he manage the in-game decision-making? That’s the stuff that can so often get away from head coaches. We saw it plenty of times with Mike McCarthy. Is this team prepared? Do they come out slow again in a big game, which happened so many times under Garrett and McCarthy? Frankly, I want to see how Shottenheimer looks in his first game. I’m obviously going to be cheering for him. It’s reasonable to have some questions about what he’s going to be able to do as the Cowboys head coach, but there’s a lot writing on this man. He’s the head coach for the Cowboys. They’re kind of tying him and Dak Prescott together. This is our first see if the Cowboys had a stroke of genius hire, an unknown hire, which is where he’s at right now, or if there are going to be concerns on Friday morning. [Music]

  1. Look here it should be easy picking for Dak they have to watch Lamb or Pickens then you have Turpin oh but wait you have to watch for Ferguson and then well if the back runs a route lol someone will ….should be open if Dak can find the open guy in time if the line holds up …..but i think you would have to respect the run too alot for a defense to cover

  2. I think Winfrey‘s back is just a way of them putting mazi as active even though he should be cut because they don’t wanna look stupid that we once again selected Michigan trash I guess everybody forgot taco now mazi and most likely in a year or two Luke Schoonmaker are all trash

  3. The Cowboys offense line will be exposed LT RG struggling and the defense early third quarter will Fail Fly Eagles Fly 38 Cowboys 13 Eagles offense VS Cowboys defense Advantage Eagles 🤔🤔😕

  4. Uh, why you got AJ Brown as Jalen Carter and Jalen Carter as Joshua Uche?! 😂😂 is someone trolling you, Tom? Because wtf lmao, how do you not notice that.
