🔴LIVE 🔴St louis Cardinals VS Chicago Cubs/September 28/ /MLB THE SHOW 25

MLB the show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. Along with my partner Chris Singleton, I’m John Shami Singy. We get a treat today here in one of the historic ballparks in the entire sport. Well, love the day games here on the north side of Chicago. There is an energy and an atmosphere that just trickles on inside and we’re going to see a great matchup today. First pitch coming your way next. Just about ready to roll here. Starting on the mound in this one, Colin Ray and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Lars Newbar leading things off and takes a strike. Here’s [Applause] a high chopper and that’s just fouled. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today inside. And that is ball one. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Kick and deals. Pitch misses. And that’s ball three. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And that one lifted in the air center field. Cro Armstrong makes the grab. One away. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup. And one of the most exciting young stars in the sport. Ivon Herrera. And Boo. He’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man, they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So, watch out when he steps in. [Music] That one ripped. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner now. He’ll turn for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay throw in there safely. Waste no time there. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. Let’s go. And that misses and it’s one and0. Here stands at third with one gone in the inning. Cubs. Next offering is in for a strike. looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone, middle away. Here’s a 1-1 in the air pretty deep out to center field. Crow Armstrong should have it. Squeezes it. Runner tags for home. He’s in on the sacrifice fly and it’s one- nothing. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. So now it’s Dolan Aronado. [Applause] That one fouled off. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sack fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. Just missed. Pitch misses there and it’s two and one. Just off the inside edge. Two out. Space is empty. That’s my swinging a drive deep right field. That one back there. Feeling for the wall as he makes the catch. So, it’s one run on one base hit. No errors, no one left. Bottom half of inning number one. Coming up, it’s the Cardinals one and the Cubs coming up. Back here with my pal Singi. And for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michael. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. 0 and two now. cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Nicoer will come up to hit. He’s been tearing it up at the plate recently, hitting better than 350 this month. that one down the line and it goes just fouled. Nico, let’s go. Rip to right. Base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single batting third in half up to hit the half daddy [Applause] check swing called strike the Come on, Ian. [Music] Runner on the go. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Man at first, one away. Stays alive. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. And down on strikes he goes. And there’s two down. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Her back in on a dive. Here’s Kyle Tucker. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. They say it went in the air. left side makes the catch and the inning is over. One left for the Cubs. They trail here one- nothing here at Wrigley Field. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Gorman. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. [Music] Ray back to work. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Ray the tall righty 220 lbs and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Iowa. Check swing and he went and that is strike two. And ball one. Line drive. Reaching for it. makes the catch. That is short Thomas. Now it’s the shorts stop Thomas Sajay-Z. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. One down. Base is empty. And that one is lifted in the air. Crow Armstrong should have it. Two down. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pah. Looking good. Looking good. up and in. And that’s ball one. And another ball. hammered base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, a man at first, Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Fast for a strike. just missed. Pah the runner at first with two gone. Get out of here. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. One hit, one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Cardinals one and the Cubs nothing. We head to the bottom of the second. Now it’s the right fielder Sea Suzuki. Suzuki. First pitch misses. [Applause] Hit on the ground to short to Jay-Z. The throw to first. One up, one down. Batting six, center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. So up now for Chicago, Pete Crow Armstrong. Chris, it’s been a good year for him, having already set a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. There’s a swing and a drive. That’s back. He hits the wall and hangs on. Great catch, man. I’m telling you, you better have your life insurance policy right. When you challenge the ivy, there’s brick behind that. It’s not forgiving at all, but he seemed to be concerned about one thing and that’s making that catch. Nice job. Lined and that’s a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Batting eight catcher. Here’s Reese Maguire. [Applause] Michael throws to first. Swanson back on a dive. And that one fouled off. Two outs. Foul ball there. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. One ball in the dirt. Blocked. Tying run is a first. Bottom half of inning number two. BS that off to the left. And we’ll do it again. [Music] And that’s in the dirt. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead. Doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position. Matt Shaw in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And he grounds one to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Cubs leave one. They’re down one- nothing. Top half of the third inning. And now the center fielder, Victor Scott. Scotties. Ground ball to the right side. Slides for the stop in time. Got him. We saw a few skills on display there for the out. Technique was great. Reaction time was there and the slide was smooth. Watching that play come together was really fun. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Here’s the left fielder Lars Nbar. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. Cut on and lifted in the air. Crow Armstrong moves after it. Carous it and there’s two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. [Music] Herrera stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Come on. Pop foul out of play off to the right. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two down. Nobody on. That one is absolutely belted. Can’t get to it as it drops into the corner around first and hustling for second. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. So, runner at second, two down. Burlson getting ready to hit. Drove in a run with a sack fly his first time up. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One and0. Runner at second. Two down. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Two balls, no strikes. the count. Let’s go. Right through there for a strike. That one fouled off. Two and two. [Music] And that’s down and away. Nolan Aronado in the St. Louis on deck circle. Sit him down. Swinging a ball hammered left field. Dives, but it falls and now it looks like extra bases. The run comes in from second and they lead by two. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Here’s Nolan Aronado flyed to right his first time. Ball one, no strikes. The strategy of winning a ball game when you can make that pitcher work a little more, expose himself by throwing pitches, that can be the key to winning perhaps later on. So, good job of extending this inning, getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Hit hard on the ground to short over to first and they get Aronado for the out. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Cards on the board with this double and it’s two zip. Major League Baseball is on the show as we go to the last of the third. Now the third baseman, Matt Shaw. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. The one-1 is fouled off and a one-two. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. And here’s the first baseman. Michael Bush. Now fly ball to right center. Pauls it in for the two up, two down. Now betting two out. Space is empty. Here’s Nico her one for one with a single so far. And that’s outside. Ball one. just missed [Applause] and foul ball. Strike two. And there’s a ball. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. [Music] Got him. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing across here this half. On to inning number four. It’s the Cardinals two and the Cubs nothing. And we’re back. John Shampi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Nolan Gorman. Let’s go. That catches the corner. Not a lot of people know this, but this isn’t the only Wrigley Field in MLB history. You know, when the league expanded and added the Los Angeles Angels in 1961, they played their first season at a stadium in LA called Wrigley Field, which had been the home of the minor league team of the same name. Swinging a ground ball and that’s just foul. Up and in. And the count is one and two. One ball, two strikes. The count and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. All right, let’s go on the ground out to short. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting shorts stop Thomas Jay-Z. And up next for St. Louis, Thomas Sajay-Z. And that one fouled off one. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. The shorts stop takes a ball. That one a little bit high. Ball three. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Foul ball. One out. Base is empty. Headed towards the corner. And a foul ball. One down, base is empty. That’s to third in time to Bush. Two quick outs here in the top of the fourth. Now batting catcher Pedro Pah. Pedro Pahes the next to hit. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Two outs. That pitch in for a strike. And the count even at one. And a strike. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. [Music] Next pitch is outside. Two down. Nobody on spoils that one and it remains two and two. And that’s outside. And they’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Ripped to short. Fires over to first. St. Louis goes down in order. Red Birds down quietly. They’re up two nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the fourth. So up now for Chicago in half. That one misses and that’s ball one. on the ground right side throws to first and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man now batting the designated hitter Kyle so here’s Kyle Tucker now fly to left his first time Tucker who’s been an allstar and a gold glover and that one’s a little bit low and It’s one and0. No, that pitch not even close. A two- count now. He can’t be over aggressive. He’s got to make sure that pitch is right on a T for him. Hit hard but foul off to the left. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next pitch is downstairs. And that one hammered way back. Out of the ballpark and gone. Hello Sheffield. And this place is rocking. His 23rd of the year. And they’re on the board. It’s 2-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, Boo, clearly some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean, that ball was so close to going foul. Would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. Did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Now, here is Seiya Suzuki. in the air right field. Walker hustling after it. Drops in for a hit. Couldn’t run it down around second now. Going for three. The relay. The tag out. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Here’s the center fielder, Pete Crow Armstrong, and first offering is fouled off. Just missed. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering in there for a strike. That is strike two. just off the outside part of the plate. Struck him out looking. Cubbies edge closer on this long ball and this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Wrigley Field, all set for the start of the inning. And now Jordan Walker. Ray back to work. Walker in his second season, 22 years old, a former first round pick in 2020. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, the catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. Cro Armstrong flashes the leather on the run and catch. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Scott the next to hit takes ball one. Next offering is in for a strike. Come on, let’s show One down, base is empty. Ground ball right side and he takes it himself for the out. Up next for the Cardinals, left fielder Lars Nbar. So the batting order turns over and stepping in for the Cardinals, Lars Nbar. Bowl for two in this one. just missed. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Half makes the grab and that’s the inning. back here at the friendly confines. Dansby Swanson stands in. Danby Swanson edge of the zone for a strike and it’s 0 and one. out in front and fouled to the left side. [Music] The 02. That one missed. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. to the right side. Here tosses to first and Swanson is set down. Now batting catcher Reese Maguire. And the batter now is Reese Maguire. 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Swinging a foul straight back. The one-1 is fouled off. Home team down a run. Last half of inning number five. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. And stepping in is the speedy Matt Shaw. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game in there and it’s 0 and one. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths outside with a breaking ball. your pitch line to left. And that’s a fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second. And now the tying run is into scoring position. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. Michael Bush will hit next liner and this could be trouble heading for the plate. He will score and the Cubs tie it up. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So here’s her now one for two that misses the zone and that is ball one and another ball activity in the bullpen. Sunny Gray getting ready to go. Number 49 also getting ready. [Applause] [Music] Next pitch is outside. Two outs and one in scoring position. That pitch clips the outside corner and now three in one. [Music] And that’s fouled off. As a hitter, you don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2. Man at second. Swing and a liner. Base hit out into right center field. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe at home and the runner scores from second. 32. They take the lead. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. So, two down in half. The next Cub to hit. That one’s in there. 0 and one. [Applause] Michael throws to first. Pinter back in on a dive. Leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] It’s strike two. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. That one well upstairs. Going to count one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, they’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. The one-two spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Started to go at the one, two, a check on it to third and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. We’re through five. It’s the Cubs three and the Cardinals two. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Andrew Kitridge. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So, they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. One-run game. Now, the number two hitter, Ivon Herrera. Late swing fouled off. [Applause] And that’s in there for a strike. And quickly nothing at two. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Aaron Savali up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Assad also throwing. [Music] Swung on. Belted. Should be extra bases. Safe at second with nobody out. And he represents the tying run. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Good pitch. Slider down and away. Just stayed down and threw it nicely. Such an easy pitch to pull off of because you’re probably thinking fast ball down the middle initially. Now up for St. Louis. Alec Burlson. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run and fouled off. [Applause] [Music] outside and now it’s even one and one fought off foul. Oh, [Applause] fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] Man at second. That one misses and it’s two and two. Two balls, two strikes. That one the other way. Pulls it in for the Now batting the designated Nolan Aronado. Here’s Nolan Aronado. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] There’s the strike. 95 of that one with the tying run at second. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. That one at 95 missed up top. Two and one. You got this. Ground ball left side. Slings it across and they get Aronado for the out. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Swings through that. and one hard hit left side. Third out. The Cards leave one and it’s still a 32 ball game. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Sunny Gray. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Kyle Tucker. He’s already homered here in this one. Tucker. Tucker, former fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Astros. This guy’s turned into a whale of a player. And a curve is down and in. Tucker hits for power. He’s got 30 homer power, but the strikeout rate is under 20%. Swing and a miss. And he was fooled. One ball, two strike. Get another one. got him looking. One out. So, he gets the call and picks up the strikeout looking. Sometimes with a good hitter at the plate, he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that, but just not right there. Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes. Seiya Suzuki the next Cub to hit right through there for a strike. Gray fills up the zone, forces contact. So, not a huge strikeout guy, but he’s going to make the hitters beat him. Doesn’t issue a lot of walks, so the pressure is really on the batter to make something happen. Next offering, he’s in for a strike. And although you like the fact that, you know, guy throws strikes, guy gets contact, and not always great contact. The fact that when you have runners on, if that ball’s in play, there’s still a good chance that a run gets pushed across whether it’s earned or not. Got it. Come on. Let’s go. Misses inside and it’s two and two. Command in the zone is such a crucial part of it, right? You know, it’s not just throwing strikes, but it’s throwing quality strikes. It’s having quality misses as well. What’s a quality miss? Missing just off the plate rather than over the plate. Two-2 now on the ground to the left and it goes just fouled. Good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. base knock right field. So he battled through a long at bat and earned himself a hit. Now batting center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. And up next for Chicago, Pete Crow Armstrong. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] Cro Armstrong tries to check his swing. Now a look to third. Nope, he held back. That’s down and in. So here we go. Base runner at first could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position, even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. One-run game. One out, one on the ground to first and he can’t come up with it. Gets off a throw and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Now batting shortstop Danby Swanson. Swanson digs in. upstairs. Suzuki at second with two down. And a foul ball. [Music] That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball two. Man on second, two down. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Doesn’t stop. Heads for home. Throw is offline and he scores and they take a two-run lead. Comes through with the RBI. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Here’s the catcher to hit. Reese Maguire. Fast ball in the corner at the knees and it’s a strike way out front for strike two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. [Music] Here’s the O2 swing and this one’s bounced to the ground. Sends it across to first and that is that. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now 42. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Aaron Savali. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. And now here is Thomas Sajay. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. Nope. Outside the 1-1 is fouled off. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] This one in the air right field dives and it gets by round second digging for third. He’s in there. Oh, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now there are several ways that they can get this run across. So digging in Pedro Pahes. That one back up the middle and it gets through. The run scores from third and it’s an RBI single and it’s a one-run game. Big time at bat right there. Comes through and they’re back within a run. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And now the right fielder Jordan Walker. first offering and it just misses. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Swinging a foul out of play, holding on to a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. swinging a miss at a slider. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. That misses and the count is even. Two and two. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout. and he will make a move to the pen. Aaron Savali is done and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now on the bump, Caleb Thebar. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott has grounded out a couple of times. A little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here, but the lefty lefty matchup, ripped to right, a dive and he can’t haul it in. Lead runner around second. Oh, the throw is over his head. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He comes across to score and the Cardinals tie it up. Big RBI for him right there. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. So the go-ahehead run is into scoring position and here’s the St. Louis leadoff man Lars Nbar 0 for three in this one. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field in to score from third. It’s an RBI single and they take the lead in the seventh. went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. Three for three with two doubles and a triple. Tap foul at the plate. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Newbar over at first with one away and a swing and a miss. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Really nice sequence for the quick strikeout right there. A couple of breaking balls to get ahead 02. then pumped the hard stuff by him for strike three. And I like that he didn’t mess around. Sometimes guys, they like to get too cute. They waste a pitch here or there and then find themselves back into a hitter’s count. But right there, he had him right where he wanted him and pitched him aggressively to get the strike out. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. That misses. Ball one. Two outs and there’s a foul ball. The 1-1 misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. Back-to-back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Fouled off. He was late. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the offspe pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Got him swinging. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. So they get three and jump ahead late. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Cardinals five and the Cubs four. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Jorge Alcala. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Well, one-run game. So, up now for Chicago. Matt Shaw. Shaw. Fast is outside. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Kyle Ley appears to be getting loose. Number 49 getting cranked up as well. [Music] Looking to get the tying run on base. And that is out of play [Applause] in the air left field down the line. Fair ball and the tying runs at second base with a double. Two hits for him in this one. Both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Now a huge atbat in this game coming up. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And now Michael Bush. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. [Music] So the tying run at second he never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Here’s a one-1. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Rips one to right and that’s a fair ball. Runner around third. He scores to tie it up to second. Pulls him off the bag. Well done. Drives in the run. Got a fast ball. Middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. absolutely smoked that ball. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. And next for the Cubs, Nicoer lifted in the air out to left. Nukebar moves under it. Puts it away for the out. Are you kidding me? Now batting left fielder Ian Hap. And up next for Chicago Ian Hap. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk him, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. [Applause] man at second. To the right side, Burlson steps on first for the out. Now batting the designated hitter. And now a very big at bat for Kyle Tucker. He’s already homerred in this game. [Applause] Just missed. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Two down, go ahead run in scoring position. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. All even at five a piece. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. We’re in the top of the eighth now. It’s the DH Nolan Aronado for the Cardinals. The designated hitter Nolan Aronado. Come on. Peelar back to work and he swings through that one. Wow, that’s not even close to the zone. Late that time, but it’s strike two. Action in the pen down there. Brad Keller, the closer is getting loose. Assad warming up as well. [Applause] Fast ball. Almost got him there. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch. And that skips in the dirt. [Music] slice to right and there’s a hit and a go ahead run is on base. Everything came together for him. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. So, a change being made at first base. And here’s the pinch runner, Jose Fairine. Jose. Go ahead. Run on base. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Gorman. Come on, Daddy. First pitch misses. You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a tea. He can get up in the air and untie this ball game. [Music] The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. Just missed. Step off throw to first and he’s back in there. And that one fouled off with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And a swing and a miss. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Thomas Sajay digs in now. One for three. Ground ball right side. And it squirts through and the go-ahead run into scoring position. One away. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And a huge opportunity now to grab the lead at this point in the game. Here comes the skipper, and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Caleb Theelbar gives way and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Javier Assad taking over on the mound and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. First and second, one out. Pedro Pahes now at the plate. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Next offering is in for a strike. That one missing inside. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Fouled off down the right side. [Music] And it remains two and two. Two on, one out. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And two away now. Nice work there to get the strike out. And that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you, this home crowd will be fired up. They can get out of this and leave that go ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. So now a pinch hitter for the Cardinals, Brendan Donovan. He comes to the plate in a huge spot in this one. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Music] That one outside and it’s a ball and a strike. swing and a fly ball well struck left field and that’s the third out. So, the Cards strand a couple. Our score holds at five apiece. Now, pitching back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Kyle Ley. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. He tries to force weak contact. So, command and execution are huge for him. Now it’s the right fielder Sea Suzuki. He’s a big strong guy. Can untie this game with one swing. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one late in the game. Everyone gets a little tighter. Way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there. And that one fouled off. Might want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good VLOO. [Applause] Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. That one to first. Burlson. And he handles it himself for the out. Unelievable. Up next for the Cubs, center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. Pete Crow Armstrong, the next Cub to hit. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball one. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Jojo Romero, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. All tied up near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Swing and a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they have the lead. They must be going crazy in the dugout. And now they’re out in front. It’s 65. That’s a great way to fire up this crowd. They’re feeling it now. [Applause] Oh yeah. [Applause] When a guy’s got a real hard fast ball, you can’t overswing. All you’ve got to do is get the bat head to the spot. If you do, he supplies the power and you’ll get to jog around the bases like he did right there. [Applause] One down. Next to hit Dan. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. One down. Base is empty outside. That’s a goal. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. That one pushed foul. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And now the catcher comes up to him. Reese Maguire 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. That’s in for a strike at 95. It’s 0 and one. on the ground to third. Gorman throws on to first and that will end the inning. Cubs get one on the solo shot. Last chance coming up here for the Cards. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Brad Keller. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. [Applause] Scott in the box now. Takes strike one. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. That one off the mark and it’s one and two. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. chopped left side. Swanson, no play. That’s an infield single. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. So, an infield single does the job right there. Now, we’ll see if they can make something happen. And the batter now, Lars Nar throw to second and great jump. And the tying run is now in scoring position. Well, it seems like 90 ft is such a big deal in a tight one-run game like this one. Maybe it’s a little bit risky, but they felt good about it and it paid off. Let’s see if they can turn this into a big run. Fast ball for a strike and it’s nothing and two. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. Swung on. Popped up left side. Swanson makes the call and the grab and there’s one away. He’s two outs away. Here’s the second baseman, Ivon Herrera. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. Next pitch misses outside. One and one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle. Oh, now this is blasted way back there. On its way. Gone. A towering shot. Home run number 20 on the year. And they lead it. It’s 76. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance and they found a way to fight back big time. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Brad Keller won’t go any further and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. [Applause] Now pitching. Here comes a new arm for the Cubs, Drew Pomerance. He’s been so good against lefties. Drew Pomerance. [Applause] One down. Alec Burlson getting ready to hit. Smoke to right, but he’s got it. Man, he smoked that fast ball. He’s all over it. It’s just frustrating when you can’t get it to fall. Maybe next time up he’ll find a hole. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Jose Fmine. Entered the game as a pinch runner. First plate appearance for him here. Now a will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. Two runs for St. Louis on this blast. And this is now a 76 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and on the mound is the closer John King. A chance at his first save of the year. Number 47. John King. So digging in, Matt Shaw. What are you looking to do in these spots? You’re down a run. You’re leading off the inning. He’s not a power hitter. a guy that’s looking to tie it up with one swing. So, he’s going to take and get into this at bat and try to get deep into the bat. Ultimately, however he can get to first base. One-run game, bottom nine. He can’t squeeze it and it drops in foul. [Applause] They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. Next offering is outside. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] The two- two now. gets a piece and stays alive. [Music] And that one ripped into right and it stays fair around first. Digging for two. Here’s the throw as the tying run is forced to stop at second. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes. and he usually wins the battle with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth. BCH will hit next. Breaking ball misses down and away. just off the inside edge with the tying run at second. Winning run at the plate there. The home team trying to pull it out on the ground to first. Burlson tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. One out. Bottom of the ninth. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. So, up now for Chicago, Nicoer. I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here. Pitchers looking for a strikeout or a ground ball, hoping to keep that runner at third. Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended. They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in this be a big pickoff if he can push a run across. Line drive base hit runner from third in to score and it’s an RBI single and they’ve tied it in the bottom of the ninth. Huge moment for him and his team. Boo. You know, some guys just grip it a bit too tight in a big spot like this, having a chance to tie it up in the bottom of the ninth, but he didn’t let the moment get to him. Comes up with the RBI knock and now he’s giving his teammates a chance to walk this thing off with the win if they can push across another run here in the bottom of the ninth. One out. Ian H digs in now. 0 for four. Two strikeouts and two ground outs. Fought off foul. [Music] and fouled off. One down. Winning run on at first. King picks over. Horner back in on a dive. One ball, two straight [Music] keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Oh, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. Off the mark there. Two and two. Way to lay off that pitch down. Ruer takes off. There’s a ball. Throw to second. He’s safe. And that makes it 30 stolen bases for him this season. The winning run on second base. Hit on the ground to short. Fires across the diamond. Play is made. Two out. Now batting the designated hitter, Kyle Tucker. And now the DH, Kyle Tucker. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah. I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Right through there for a strike. Winning run stands at second. [Applause] Hit hard on the ground. the short throws across the diamond. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. So, one run in the inning on this base hit and we’re deadlocked here at 77. Back after this on the show, we’re in extras here down the third base. Nolan Gorman, man at second, nobody out. And Chris, certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah, the way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. [Applause] That one hit to right. Makes the grab. Grounder tags second and he makes it up to third with one away. [Music] Now batting short stop Thomas Thomas Sajay-Z now at the plate. They could take the lead in a variety of ways. So this comes down to the batter’s ability to stay in control and wait for a good pitch to do something with check swing. No appeal. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. the 10. The shorts stop takes the ball. In this situation, he’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. And there’s the strike. Yeah, I think part of that goes into it’s just so hard to come up with hits in today’s game. Starters don’t go deep and so hitters are seeing multiple pitchers every night and that makes it more challenging just to come up with a single. [Music] [Applause] Waves at the bender for the strike out. Oh, that’s a huge strikeout right there. Big second out. Infield was in. They were playing the fullcourt press and he got the swing and miss. keeps this one tied. This next at bat should be a lot of fun. The odds of wiggling out of this just went up considerably. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals and that is out of play. Well, it’s kind of deflating. You blow that lead in the bottom of the ninth. So, here’s a new opportunity. Hit the reset button, try to get some more runs and then close it out in the bottom half of this one with a go ahead run at third. And here in extra innings, [Applause] squirts away a little bit and it’s a ball and a strike as the runner holds. That’s the third Shaw. And that is that. So, it’s no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on base. Onto the bottom of inning number 10, and we are tied 77. New pitcher for the Cardinals, number 49. He’s thrown the ball very well overall this season. He’s been really tough to get to. You see that erra and that’s where you love to be. So digging in Seiya Suzuki and that’s in for a strike. 0 and one the count. This one in the air. Burlson on the move. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Now batting center fielder Crow Armstrong making a move at second base. Entering is the pinch runner Kevin Alcantara. He’s the potential winning run. So they’re hoping he can score in a base hit. So up next, Pete Crow Armstrong. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. And ball one and another ball. Downing ball here. rolls. Foul one away. The winning run at second, swings and misses. It’s two and two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. [Applause] man at second. Grounded to Gorman. Throws to first in time. And there’s two away. Now batting the short stop. Dansby. And here comes Dansby Swanson. [Applause] with a short stop. Takes a ball. The 10. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Winning run and scoring position with two away. and a count one and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. And that one hit to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one man left. We push on to the 11th and we are tied 77. back. Now we’re in extras and there’s a new arm on the mound. Taylor Rogers. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now up for St. Louis. Brendan Donovan. Fly to left his first time. That’s outside. One and0. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Ball to strike the pitch. That’s hard hit on the line. Reaching for it and brings it in. Runner tags at second. Safe and the go ahead runs at third. Are you kidding me? Now batting the centerielder Victor Scott. Now a move being made for a pinch hitter Joho. And this is a big at bat in this ball game. Now we’ve got a substitution at third base. Pinch running here. Nathan Church. Nathan Church [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. That clips a corner. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. And a swing and a miss. Huge strike out there. Big strike out right there. And that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit. Infield was in. So now they can move back, give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play. A lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third. Now next to hit Lars Nbar. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. with a go ahead run at third here in extra innings. The next offering misses and the count is 2 and 0. Two outs. That one missed. Now three and 0. I know it’s 3 0, but I’m letting him swing here. If he likes to pitch, why not? [Music] [Music] So now two on and two outs. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. second base Ivon Herrera. So, two outs with runners on the corners. And up next for St. Louis, Ivon Herrera just a single short of the cycle. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Next pitch in for a strike and it’s one and one. Defense. Looked like it was a little bit up. Swing and a miss. And the count’s even at two. [Applause] Smoked on the ground to second. Horner over to first. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. So they strand a pair. One run can win it as we move to the bottom of the 11th and we are tied 77 Jimmy Crooks the new catcher now. Now catching number eight. Now the Cubs catcher Reese Maguire 0 for four with three ground outs and a strikeout. Reese Maguire. That’s in there. And that is strike one. There’s the swing and a miss. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. And here is Matt Shaw. First offering and it just misses. One away. And the game-winning run stands at second. Gets the strike. That was the sweeper. Hot shot to third. In plenty of time to first and there are two outs. Now batting first base Michael Bush. And next for the Cubs, Michael Bush. Well, he came up clutch earlier in this ball game and really just he gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get an out [Applause] in the dirt but kept close. No movement on the base. It’s ball one. Next pitch misses. Now two and 0. And another ball. Two on, two outs. Swang and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Runner around third on his way to the plate. In comes the winning run and the Cubs walk it off in the 11. Well, you come to the ballpark hoping you’ll see something special that day. Whether you’re a player or a fan, a walk-off win. Nobody forgets that. A memorable moment that’ll be logged in the backs of the minds of everybody that witnessed this here today. [Applause] And a final 8-7. A one-run extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
