🔴LIVE 🔴Detroit Tigers VS Boston Red Sox /September 28/ Live Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
In Boston, we bring you Friday baseball on the show. It’s the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox. First pitch coming your way next. So, just about set now. And pitching in this game, Kyle Harrison. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today, but when you consider having the ability to get that strikeout, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Second, second base Torres. Glabber Torres up to hit. Let’s go Kyle. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Jones aboard here at first with nobody out. Turn two. Next offering in there for a strike and a count one and one [Applause] in the air right field. Abrau on his way over one away. And now the Tigers lineup for manager AJ Hinch. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, Jamai Jones. Tops on the team in batting average. Boo. A guy who’s showing off some excellent bat-to ball ability when he digs in at the plate. You know, that’s useful if your team needs to get an inning going, get a leadoff man on, but it’s also incredible to have a guy like that in the lineup because he’s a run producer who can drive in runs if you got guys on base already. So, he’s a huge piece in this lineup. Fouled off down the right side, man. At first, one away. Come on, Socks. checks his swing. Now it appeal to first. And yes, he did. That’s a swing according to Earl Hendris. [Applause] Hit on the ground. Might be two. Over to Story for one. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. One hit in the inning, but no one left. And now the Red Sox get their turn. No score. back in Boston and on the hill in this one, Casey Mai. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club, and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him, and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Jiren Durant, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. And he brings it in on the warning track. Outstanding catch right there. And I love the commitment that he showed. He knew that the wall was close, but was determined to make that catch. And a nice calculation of just how much room he had to try to minimize that contact. Trevor Story the next to hit takes ball one. Mai a guy that really fills up the strike zone rarely walks people. The downside is the home run ball more likely in play. Ripped but it curls. Foul. Well, pitchers like this usually work down in the zone a lot. But these days with all the uppercut swings most hitters are taking to elevate the ball. Pitchers almost have to be effective up in the zone with hard stuff. So maybe that’s one area he can improve in his game to try to combat that long ball. That just misses ball two. As a hitter, does knowing that this guy’s going to be in the zone, does that make you more aggressive? Kind of. But you still have to stay on that back side. You got to make sure you get pitch recognition and let your hands work. Did you ever really need a cue to be more aggressive? No, I never did, especially when it comes to swing. And this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance and it’s off the green monster. And that’s a double. And now it’s Alex Bregman. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. This one chopped on the ground but foul. at the book. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one to first has some trouble with it. Flip to the pitcher is in time and they do get the out as we check out the lineup for the Boston Red Sox. You’re the six spot for them in this one. Son Raphaela. Well, right in the middle of this lineup and that’s exactly where he belongs. I mean, he’s there for a reason. Boo. guy. They know they can rely on him and he’s a force, a presence there that, you know, puts a little trepidation in that opposing pitcher. We’ll see what kind of impact he has in this one. Masataka Yoshida in the box now as he leaves that one up high. swings through that. Well, he looks to have some quality stuff on the hill today. Start this outing out. Pepper in the zone. Arm is loose and firing them in there. And that misses and it’s two and one. That one is upstairs. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. Romy Gonzalez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two outs. No score yet, but a runner at third with two away. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. in the air left field. Green makes the grab and that is the third out of the inning. One left for the Red Sox. Scoreless after one. Top of the second. And now the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. Inside just missed. Harrison in his second season, 23 years old, and he was a third round pick in 2020. Slap the other way. Foul. Ripped to short over to low. Lead off man retired here in the second. Batty fifth leftielder Riley Green. Here’s Riley Green and Singy. We already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Next offering is fouled back. One out. Base is empty. fouled off left side. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Had him way out front of the slur. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Stepping in Andy Abanz. He swings and fouls one off on the ground to short dives but it kicks off his glove. No throw and the defense comes away with nothing. Batting seven, catcher Dylan Dingler. Runner at first with two away. And next to hit for Detroit, Dylan Dingler. There’s a swing and a drive. Yoshida ranging back and it bangs off the monster coming home. He’s safe and it’s one- nothing. Wastes no time there. Absolutely blasted that one into the gap, but just didn’t have quite enough to clear the wall out there. Maybe a little more elevation under it and it carries over, but that’s a swing you’ll be happy with every time. So, runner at second, two down. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. That one misses and it’s one and0. Rudder at second. Two down here in the top of the second. That one ripped and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Runner from second crosses the plate. It’s two nothing. Comes through with the RBI. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. man in scoring position with two away. And up next for Detroit, Javier Bayz. And that one hammered. That’s back there. That’s long gone. And they add on. It’s four nothing. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you could say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. His bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park. Back to the top of the lineup, here’s Jamai Jones. Slice down the right side. Swings through that one for strike two. high in the air out to right. And that is that. So they move out in front after a fourrun outburst. We go to the bottom of inning number two. Tigers four and the Red Sox nothing. Bottom half of inning number two. Leading off Romy Gonzalez. Romy Gonzalez. My back to work. First pitch swinging. Next offering misses down and away. Clyde Washington with home plate duties in this one. Little bit of a low zone boo from Clyde. Nothing crazy though. Pitchers that work consistently down around the knees and are able to command their off speed stuff tend to have some pretty good success with him back there behind the plate. That smash towards center. And there’s one down. Batting six centeriel. And next for the Red Sox, Son Raphaela singing when the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. All right, so let’s go. In there at the knees and it’s 0 and one. Knee high. That’s in for a strike. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. In the dirt now. One and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Here’s Nathaniel Low and first offering is fouled off. Let’s go Nathaniel. That one pushed foul. Next offering away upstairs. Two out. Space is empty. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Left hand hitter waits. Hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul. whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there. And that is gone. He sends it out of here. His 19th home run of the year. And they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 4-1. That gives them hope they can pull off this comeback. They just need a few more swings like that and they’re back in business. [Applause] there. He got a splitter that he was able to handle. Allowed that pitch to travel a little bit deeper and when it was time to commit, his hands exploded through the zone. And stepping in for Boston, Willard Abrau. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. Bottom half of inning number two. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. Third out that ends the frame. Boston getting closer thanks to the homer. It’s now 4-1. Back here at Fenway all set for the start of the inning. Now it’s the second baseman Glabber Torres. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Story sends it over to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Now batting right fielder Wel Perez. Wel Perez will hit next. He hit into a double play his first time up. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two inside and it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Spencer Torqulson grounded out to short in his first trip. Pitch is in there. That’s strike one. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Ring him up, says Clyde Washington. That’s a strike out. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. He tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. All right, Socks. Green batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Harrison picks to first. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Good purpose pitch right there. Trying to tease him, get him to raise his sights, pop something up, and make it an easy out. And that’s through there for a strike. One and two. Perez off of first with two away. bows it off. Still one and two. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. Tigers leave one, but they lead it four to one. back here at Fenway. And now the catcher comes up to hit him. Carlos Narvzlov, they say it went straight. Here we go. And he’ll one looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So the Red Sox lineup turns over now batting Jiren Durant. Fly to center his first time. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. And another ball. Strike two. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches. Throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. [Music] Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. And they inch closer. It’s 4-2. First pitch hacking and it paid off for him in a big way. [Applause] So many times a sinker inside is a foul ball off the ankle for the batter, but that time he did a really nice job of staying inside the pitch and getting through it. Two outs, nobody on. Here’s Alex Bregman 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Swung on. Belted. That’s back there. And that ball is out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers. His 19th home run of the year. It’s 43. [Applause] Backto back jacks and this club is fired up right now. Boog. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. Two outs, base is empty, and next will be the cleanup hitter, Masataka Yoshida, outside low. And that’s ball one. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s gonna need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Two down, nobody on. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Green sizes this one up and makes the play and that’s out number three. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 43 ball game. Back here at Fenway Park now. Here is Andy Az. inside. Almost got him. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. And a foul ball. And that one is inside. Swing and a miss. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Now here’s the Detroit catcher Dylan Dingler. A double and a run scored his first time up and that’s a little bit high. One and0 you know sing they talk about Red Sox nation but there is something to that because the Boston Red Sox aren’t just about Boston or Massachusetts. It’s that whole New England area. So you’re talking about Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Northern Connecticut. There’s a whole segment of the country that is locked in on the Boston Red Sox pitch to pitch throughout the summer. do it. Meadows in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike and a foul ball. They travel really well and I think Red Sox fans are sprinkled all over the country. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. Down in order go the Tigers, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. Bottom of the fourth, Joe stepping in for Boston. Romy Gonzalez. Romy Gonzalez. You know, these Red Sox showing great discipline at the plate, and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. And now two and one. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. That’s towards center. Meadows settles under this one. Makes the grab. One down. Now batting. Son Raphaela up next for the Red Sox. His first at bat was a strikeout. just missed. Sliced hard but foul. Bounced to third. Get there. Throw on to Torqulson and there’s two away. Now batting first base Nathaniel Nathaniel Low up to hit. He’s already homered here in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. Foul ball still 0 and two. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next one misses and the count one and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes in the air. Right field. Perez sizing this one up. Brings it in. And that ends the inning. New inning getting started. And now Javier Bayz. Javier sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Harrison back to work. Slice to right. Abra makes the catch and there’s one away. Now batting hitter Javi Jones. Back to the top of the Detroit order. Jamai Jones up now for the Tigers. One for two. In for a strike and one doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Garrick Crochet getting loose out there. Whitlock also throwing and that one fouled off. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. He goes down looking. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. here. He got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count. Just a pour at bat. Two down, base is empty. Here is Glabber Torres and first offering is fouled off. Torres in his seventh season, 28 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Two outs. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. Tigers are shut down there and it remains a 4-3 game. And we’re back here at Fenway Park. John Shambi with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five, William Abrau. Come on. Let’s go. Just missed a little bit high and it’s 2 and 0. Looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. swings through that one. Back foot slider struck him out. Well, that’s a blue zone right there or the cold zone on the hitting chart. Just doesn’t have much success in that part of the strike zone. And a really good job of the pitcher executing. Try to go there as often as you can. The numbers are in your favor. Carlos Narvz the next to hit. Struck out looking in his first at bat. Right through there for a strike in the dirt and it’s one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. And that’s off the inside edge. The countdown two and two. And downstairs, the Tigers up by a run. Last half of inning number five. to the left side, but it is well fouled. One down, base is empty. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Duran in the box now. No balls in a strike. The Tigers have some action going in their pen for the first time. Chris Paddock getting loose for AJ Hinch. Melton getting cranked up as well. Two down. Nobody on right side. Torres handles on to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We’re through five, Tigers four, and the Red Sox three. Garrick Crochet gets the ball now. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. So digging in Wel Perez, a switch hitter batting right. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. 0 and one. Well, these Tigers digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. That one a little bit high at a count one and two. That’s inside. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Got him looking. One gone here. Well, he hadn’t seen that change up the entire at bat until that putaway pitch. And it’s pretty tough to deal with as a hitter. You’re up there battling, trying to read and react with two strikes and then all of a sudden the pitch comes out of nowhere and it’s a good change up. It’s just almost impossible to hit it when you haven’t seen it. And next will be the Tiger cleanup hitter, Spencer Torqulson. And that one hit to first and a foul ball. So, Boog, you went to college in this town. What was it like for you being a college student and having the opportunity to bounce over here to Finway Park and see some games? Yeah, in fact, 1990, a couple of college classmates and I, we were in college. We bought standing room tickets and then the next night got a chance to see the Red Sox clinch the East against the White Socks in that sliding catch in the corner by Tom Bdansky. the Red Sox would end up losing to the Oakland A’s in the playoffs. But that’s one of the things that I’ll think about in terms of memories from going to college and going to Fenway. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That’s a strike attacked with the sweeper. No need to offer at that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And they have their first hit since the second inning. Now batting leftielder Riley Green. Now the left fielder Riley Green who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Ball one low. Torqulson leads off first with one away. Hit in the air. Center field. Raphaela should have this one. Hauls it in. Two away. Now batting third base Andy Ibanz. Andy Ianz now at the plate. In the air fairly deep to right field. Abrau has this one sized up. He’s got it. And that is that. So one hit is all they get. 234 do up in the home half of the sixth. Tigers four and the Red Sox three. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Chris Paddock. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Trevor Story comes up to the plate. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run, but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? Check swing called strike. Activity in the bullpen. Raphael Monttero up and throwing. Rainey warming up as well. And that one fouled off. [Music] [Applause] Just misses there. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. The shorts stop takes a ball and that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Got him looking and he did not like the call. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the play today. Now it’s Alex Bregman. He’s already homered in this game. Now fly ball to right center and that quickly. Two away. Now batting Masataka Yoshida up next for the Red Sox. Bowl for two in this one. Red. There’s the strike. And fires in a fast ball at 95. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. And that’s in the dirt. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. Goes down looking. Nothing across here this half. Seventh inning coming up. Tigers four and the Red Sox three. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Garrett Whitlock. He has a great slider with tons of movement. Number 22. Garrett Whitlock. Here’s the catcher, Dylan Dingler. catcher. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot. And here comes Swang and a miss. Strike one. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters. And really, their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win. Every manager’s dream. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. [Applause] cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. And now Parker Meadows. Ball one, no strikes. One down. Base is empty. Fought off. Foul. and he chases that one coming out of the bullpen and throwing BB’s chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. And now it’s Bayz, and he’s already left his mark on this game. He certainly has, Boo. A two-run shot in the second inning, and that made an early impact on this game in a big way. on the corner for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And he strikes out the side in the seventh. [Music] Bottom of the seventh. And stepping in for Boston, Romy Gonzalez. Romy Gonzalez. And that one fouled off. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. And that is out of play. Looking to get the tying run on base. That one way outside. Going to count one and two. Good eye right there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this. You got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Sidon Raphaela up next for the Red Sox. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Meadows sizes this one up and there’s two down. Batting. And here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Chris Paddock done for the night and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, the Tigers get a new arm from the pen. Tyler Holton, he doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. So, up next, Nathaniel Low. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. Out to center. Meadows under it and he makes the catch and that will end the inning. Greg Weisser on the pitch here. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Back to the top of the order. The batter now, Jamai Jones. one for three [Music] and there’s a foul ball. Just missed. shortened a bunt and missed it. And it’s one and two. That one missing inside. two swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So a man on base to start the inning. Now that really protecting with two strikes right there. Pitch wasn’t even close but man he got the barrel to it somehow. Nice job of bad ball hitting. Here comes Glabber Torres. And that one goes straight to the back stop. Jones into scoring position on the wild pitch. And there goes the double play possibility. Can’t imagine he’s too happy with that one on the mound. Just one pitch after giving up the single, he basically turns it into a double. No outs. Runner on second. Torres tries to hold up. Appeal to first. Yes, he did. That’s a swing. Next offering is fouled back. Foul ball still a one and two count. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. And we’re in the top of the eighth. [Music] Next pitch way upstairs. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Base hit for the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single and they lead by two. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. Wel Perez digs in now. First pitch just misses. One ball. Torres gets his lead at first. Nobody out. And it finds its way through for a hit. And they’re at the corners with nobody out. And he’s into second with nobody out. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. There’s nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. Caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. Here comes Torque to the plate. Golden opportunity right here. And that one misses up and in. Ball one. Don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. Two runners in scoring position. Nobody out. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. [Applause] That misses now. Two and two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Good eye on that spot. That’s a really good take. Riley Green up next for the Tigers. [Music] Fights it off. He’ll see another Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. About to see the 11th pitch of the at here. And they’re all loaded up. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. So bases all loaded up. Riley Green getting ready to hit. Boo. This has been a good one. A really good game to this point. And huge opportunity with the bases loaded. Come on. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. They need a strike out. And you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup, something. But you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. Pitch misses there and the count is one and one. So they’re all loaded up. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. That one outside. Three and one. Now back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. hammered and now maybe extra bases. One runs in the second run scores. Coming around third is Torqulson. He’s safe and they clear the bases. Now betting third base Andy. So, Singi, let’s dive into the numbers courtesy of Stackcast. Do you even feel contact being made when you hit a ball that hard? No, I don’t think so, Boo. I mean, that’s just the best feeling in the world as a hitter. You square it up perfectly and it’s like you didn’t even swing the bat. And there are times the ball feels heavy off your bat. You know it. But this is not one of those cases. He sent this one flying 114 milesPH. So, that’s flexing your muscles a little bit. And so the Red Sox go to the bullpen. Zack Kelly. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It runner in scoring position. No outs. Devonz the next to hit. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. that one the other way bounces over the wall in foul ground. It’s an automatic double as a run scores. He puts a great swing on that pitch and drives home the run. And that was always going to be a double, but the bounce over the wall just took the guesswork out of it right away. Hey, it was a nice swing. So, a man aboard and here’s the catcher, Dylan Dingler, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Ball one there, Kelly. He’s one of those guys who uses the cut fast ball as his primary offering. And when it’s on, it can induce a lot of weak contact. Runner at second, nobody out. Strike one. And the late movement on the cutter is really what makes it so effective because as a hitter, you make a decision whether you’re going to swing or take a pitch before it actually gets into the Oh, now this ball’s going to get through and that’s base hit. Throw is offline and he scores. It’s 103. Batting the center Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. First pitch misses. Tell fans a little bit about the difference between a cutter and a slider. Well, a cutter looks more like a fast ball, but it has that late movement like a slider that’s hard to pick up. Now, with a slider, it’s a little slower. The spin is different, and sometimes you can recognize that. And it tends to break a lot more horizontally and vertically than the cutter. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Bregman is under it. One down. [Applause] Now batting short stop Javier Bayz. Now it’s Javier Bayz. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. and he takes a strike. Still only one out here in the inning. Swings through that one out in front that time. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. Out number two. Well, clearly just anxious right there. And understandably so. and an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your swing. Two outs. Pulls that one foul. Out to short story. They get the force. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring. So in the end, 10 come to the plate. Six of them come around to score. Last half of the eighth coming up. Tigers 10 and the Red Sox three. back here in a blowout which gives us a chance to talk about just about anything. Bro, don’t get me fired. All right, Singi, let’s rewind for a second. When you heard that they were going to put a pitch clock into the game, what was your first thought? Well, I thought that these guys were going to have a very difficult time to be able to regroup after each pitch and be ready to execute some type of plan at the plate and even for pitchers on the mound. swinging a foul out of play. One of the things though that we’ve seen that is kind of a thread really in every sport, these are the elite players and so they adjust and they’ve done a great job adjusting. Absolutely. And just you tip your cat to these guys because not an easy adjustment, but they look like they’ve been doing it their entire lives. Oh, tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. Narvay Maddock with one down takes the strike. The 02 in the air on the infield. Bayz two down. Now batting the designated hitter. And next is the designated hitter Jiren Durant. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And it’s fouled away. Holton 28 years old and he was a ninthround draft pick back in 2018. Ripped on a line to center. Meadows brings it in for the third out. One, two, three go the Red Sox. Not what they were looking for. It’s 10 to three. Chris Murphy gets the call from the pen. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Now pitching for the Red Sox. Number 72. Chris Murphy. Here’s Glaver Torres leading off for Detroit. Second base, Glaver Torres. Hot shot to third. Breman to first. Now one gone in the ninth. Fastball grew right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. a hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air, maybe drive it into the gap. Wel Perez up now for the Tigers. And that misses. And that is ball one. Action in the pen down there. Number 71. The rookie left-hander appears to be getting going. Number 70 getting loose as well. Base is empty, one away here in the top of the ninth on the corner for a strike. Just missed. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. That’s to third. Bregman handles, tosses to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting the first base, Spencer Torlson. And next up for the Tigers, Spencer Torlson. Just missed. That one fouled off. The 1-1 is fouled off. That’s outside and it’s two and two. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field and that’ll fall for a base hit. Zoe gets on base and keeps it going. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. man at first. Riley Green up now for the Tigers. And that one pulled foul. Yan. Well, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. And a curve misses outside. Torqulson, the runner at first with two gone. And a good eye there. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. puts a runner into scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. [Music] Devonz stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. This one’s got a chance. And that one hops the wall. One run across, another scores. Two runs in on the play. And they now lead by nine. Man at second here with two away. And next to hit for Detroit, Dylan Dingler. RBI knock for him last time. Now it’s ripped. Base hit. Coming home. The throw in. Head first slide. Safe at the plate. And it’s a doubledigit lead as they’re up by 10 right there. He does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Chris Murphy will depart. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. So, the Red Sox bring on a new pitcher, Justin Wilson. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season. and that’s not where you want to be at all. So, we’ll see how he does here. So, a man at first and up next for Detroit, Parker Meadows. This one ripped but fouled to the right. Plenty of offense in this one. Singy, I guess you’d say kind of what we expected though. Well, this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as lopsided as this. Um, but yeah, you definitely expected to see some offense coming up. Two outs liner and this could be trouble. Dingler headed for third in safely with a double, his second of the day. play at the plate and they cut him down. And that is that. Three runs on, four hits, no errors, and one left on. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. Detroit is out in front 13-3. So, bottom of the ninth, here’s Trevor Story. Holton back to work swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right. And that will get out of play. One more time. Got him. looking for the strike out. That was pretty nasty. Well, not much you can argue with there as a hitter. That pitch was dotted on the inside corner of the plate. I think even if he swings the bat, it blows him up and not really able to do anything with it. Anyhow, I think if you see that early, then perhaps you can pull those hands a little bit tighter and get the fat part of the bat to it. But I’d say overall, you just have to tip your cap on that one. Great execution. Now the third baseman, Alex Bregman. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The Tigers up big in this one. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. He swings and drives one out to deep left field. And that one hops the wall. [Applause] Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Here’s the Boston cleanup hitter, Masataka Yoshida, 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Bregman over at first with one away. on the ground right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Now back second base Romy Gonzalez. So it’s their last chance in this one. Romy Gonzalez now at the plate. 0 for three in this one. Right through there for a strike. Foul ball. Runner at second. Two down here in the last half of inning number nine. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And that is the ball game. Yeah, pretty tight ball game up until the eighth inning. And that’s really the time where you expect things to lock down, but the offense broke out. Incredible outburst and just put this game out of reach. 133 our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
