Frank Nazar Was a TANK As Chicago Blackhawks Take Down Wild! | CHGO Blackhawks POSTGAME Podcast
The biggest win of the Chicago sports day. The Blackhawks beat the Wild 4 to one in preseason action. Join us as we wrap up the win next on CHGO Blackhawks. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Yeah. [Music] Heat. Welcome into the CHGO Blackhawks postgame podcast. I’m Jay Zawaski with Mario Turbosi. Hawks win four to one in Minnesota. A hat-tick for Frank Nazar. A goal from Ryan Donado set up by a beautiful spinama backhand cross ice pass by Connor Badard. A fantastic performance from Drew Kesso. But there’s an asterisk on this one. Alex Blastic left the game and we’re not sure what his status is. So, we’ll keep an eye on that. Hopefully, we get the Jeff Flashel postgame video sent to us soon so we can get all the info to you before the show ends. But, do us a favor to celebrate this win to celebrate a perfect Chicago sports day. Socks win, Cubs win, Bears win, Hawks win. That’s 4 and0. Leave us a fivestar review. We’d love that. All right, let’s get to it. Lots of good stuff in this game. Uh, obviously Frank Nazar with the hat-tick. Dude, he is flying. And if there was anyone who And again, we’re in preseason and it is jump to conclusion season. I’m I I’m I’m putting down all my conclusions that I can jump to. But this is what we’re talk when people like were like I’m not so sure about that contract. People who have watched Frank Nazar play know it’s nothing to worry about. And to see the way he’s playing in this preseason, the way he’s playing in camp, he looks outstanding. He was great today. Uh one of many Hawks that was really good today. But we got to start with Frank with the hattick. Confidence through the roof. um you saw it continuously growing uh last season as he got more comfortable playing in the NHL. Um had more opportunity, more responsibility as the season went on. Then you saw it skyrocket through the World Championships, led team USA uh in scoring in that tournament on the way to a World Championships gold medal. He’s come into this training camp and preseason uh just with a lot of speed. He got the new contract. Like for a guy who’s never been short on self-confidence, he has every reason to be playing uh the with the way that he played tonight. Like it just seemed like everything was flowing with him. Um his this his speed the speed of this team is evident. Um Nazar is one of the guys that I would say I’d put up in a foot race with pretty much anybody in the NHL and he’s got a good shot at winning it. Um just the again I just go back to confidence like you see a player like that feeling like they’re untouchable and playing with that kind of uh just like chest out um self-confidence like he’s he’s got it. And when you get a guy going like that it’s hard to hard to get him off the train. It is uh it is it is good to watch. And you’re also seeing I thought Lefchenov had a really strong game after a little bit of a shaky debut in the preseason. You saw some of the Lefchov stuff you worry about, but a really solid game. What I liked about him was had some attitude in front of the net clearing the crease. When there was someone there, he removed them forcefully. Uh I liked his game a lot. I thought Nolan Allen stepped up and had a great game today playing physical. got a little looked like he tweaked something into third but then came back out so it looks like he’s going to be okay. Um there’s just so much good to get to in this game. There there was a lot and like lost in all of it is Conor Bernard who ends the game with an assist. He had five shots on goal in seven shot attempts, two hits, won six and lost eight faceoffs. So two hits. He’s Yeah, he’s one away from a 50% day. Like that’s everything looked good here. And again, you can qualify this if you want and you could say, well, Minnesota didn’t have everybody playing, which is true, but the Hawks play with five defensemen for the third period. They killed off basically a six on four uh power play to end the game. And you’re seeing young guys that you’re counting on to be part of this team this season, stepping up and being the best players on the ice. Yeah, I I I I think there’s and and that’s not to to take away from the games that guys like Ryan Donado had. Tavotina had a few nice plays today where Tyler Buzzi was great. Tyler Bertusi on the uh first goal, the power play goal. He doesn’t keep that puck in at the blue line. Like the play never happens and and he made a great uh hustle play to keep that puck in. Leads to Nazar’s goal. like it just a really good effort across the board and and for a preseason lineup um outside of like three guys, this was like the NHL team, right? And and I think that they had a really solid toptobottom effort. Um you know, they they for a two periods they really limited Minnesota’s offensive chances. as Minnesota started to ramp it up as they chase the game in the third period, but Drew Kza was able to answer the bell. Um got a little help from Wyatt Kaiser and Sanzel late in the game, but hey, like that across the board, this is the kind of game that um everyone seemed to hit the role that they’re supposed to play. Those the the the players that are fast and tenacious played that way. Oliver Moore made a few like he wasn’t across the highlight reel tonight, right? But he made a few good plays where his foot speed was the difference. Um like you mentioned, some of the defenseman were were physical and aggressive. Um and then you had your, you know, your your young superstar players um playing that way. Connor Bernard was playing with a lot of speed tonight. Made a really nice pass uh to set up Donado. He made a really nice I know it didn’t score, but it’s one of those passes that were like don’t do that because 99 times out of 100 it gets picked off, but that cross ice backhand through the Minnesota defense went right on the tape of Terravine and when it works it looks great. When it doesn’t uh it goes the other way. No, it was to not on the Dado. He It was a different play. I think it was in the second period, but he just woo whipped it backhand sauce like really almost literally board to board and it was right on Terrain’s tape. He got a shot off, but I think Gus I mean obviously Gustoson made the save. Um but it just seemed like things were really clicking tonight and it’s one of those games that you just you kind of sit back and you don’t ever worry about it. Last night’s game, you had to have, you know, the comeback effort in the second half of the game, but tonight it was start to finish, Hawks were in control. I Yeah, I mean, you can go into the numbers, you can see that, you know, Minnesota uh had the advantage in in the metrics. And I think that’s how a lot of games are going to look that way this year. Even games the Hawks win, they’re not going to dominate in possession. They’re still very young. They have an inexperienced defense. They’ve got they’re have some pretty inexperienced forwards, too. But what I liked about this game, and this is what this is what Jeff Flash was talking about when he took the job, when he talked about winning hockey, when he talks about guys finishing checks, winning board battles, not just flying by when the puck’s there, fighting for the puck. You you even saw Conor Bard along the boards win a couple battles today. And look, it’s it’s preseason and they mentioned that uh Marcus Felino sort of said to Noah Allen like, “Hey man, why don’t you you know, this isn’t game seven of the cup final. F that, man. I’m trying to win a job. Nolan Allen’s in a roster battle. Yeah, I’m trying to win a job. We’re trying to win this game. Like, we’re not treating this like a preseason game cuz to the vast majority of the guys playing in this game, they’re playing for a spot on the team. They’re playing for a role in this organization. And you want to see those guys play cuz look, no one Allen, if he goes out there and he halfasses it and says, “Ah, it’s preseason. I’m just going to play at 80% and coast around and I’ll nudge a guy into the boards here and no, that that actually kind of surprises me from Marcus Felino. Doesn’t surprise me coming from Marcus Felino because he’s in that mode where it’s just like it’s preseason. I’m getting my legs underneath me, but the context of who he’s going up against a Blackhawks team where a lot of guys are are fighting for for spots. Um, you know, he’s he’s probably trying to protect himself like, hey, I’m not trying to get hurt in a preseason game, but Nolan Allen’s saying, I’m trying to stay in the NHL, right? Um, so I’m I’m completely fine with Nolan. It’s RPM steak or it’s beeferoo for me. Tell me you wouldn’t play hard, right? That that’ll motivate you. Nothing against beefoo, but I’m a big fan. But I’ll take but I’ll take the RPM steak over it. Yeah. I mean it’s it’s motivation and and like you said like Nolan Allen es especially when Vasic went down or went out in the third period you know you saw Sam Renzel and Ardum Levchenov and um Cortinsky and Allen’s minutes go up um but they handled it really well. Yeah, I I’m I’m you know, I’m struggling to find anyone who I don’t think really uh you know, you again, we can dig in numbers and try to find something negative, but I think everyone did their job today. And I think you made a good point, Mario, when you talked about just kind of adopting your role and accepting your role and just doing the sort of thing that you have to do to be effective in in your role. And everybody did that today. Um I I’ve seen some talk about Burkovski in the uh comments and he took two penalties. You don’t want to see that. But I like him on the line with Bedard is a big body who can control a puck. He’s got some speed. Um you saw him a couple times in this game control a shift by hanging on to the puck a little bit. Ryan Donado’s goal was nothing to sneeze at. Yeah, it was a great pass from Connor Badard across the ice, but to get in that tight and score top shelf uh short side, that is a skill goal. That’s not just throwing at the net and hoping what’s happened. That’s Ryan Donado picking his spot. And the stuff I’ve seen from Donado this preseason, too. And and what we’ve seen from him in camp so far, I think that again, while it might not be 31 goals, this notion that like last year was just a complete fluke and he’s the uh guy that plays with Conor Bard so he gets points thing, I think that’s way overblown and I think he’s going to have another productive year goals-wise. Yeah, I mean I I don’t think you know he’s a perennial 30 goal scorer, but if you’re talking about Ryan Donado putting up between 20 and 25 next season, like you take that. I think that’s that’s absolutely pos uh possible. And yeah, like the again it’s the the confidence of this team. Like guys have a little bit more familiarity with each other. Um, you have Connor Bdard as an improved player, like that’s got to give Ryan Donado some confidence to play with him and and and feel like he can he can, you know, continue to build and maybe even replicate that career year. And you have Burkovsky with that that group as well. That’s also a guy that’s trying to kind of like get back to a version of himself that you haven’t seen since he was in Colorado in the in the in the cup year for them. So, like those guys being able to click and play at a high level consistently is going to do wonders for each other. Like they’ll be able to play off of each other really well. Um I think you know you look at the second line, Frank Nazar is tremendously talented. Um you put him with Tyler Batuzi and Tavo Terrain who two guys that were streaky at different points last season. If those three can play off of each other well and do it consistently game in and game out, you don’t if that all gels together, that top line and that second line, you don’t have to worry about your your top six really. Like you could you could actually have a top six group that’s not just, oh, we’re going to stop Bard, so we’re going to stop the Hawks. Like I feel like that is going to be out the window this season compared to the last two. Yeah, let’s get into that a little bit next because I like I like where you’re headed there. Uh before we hit the break zone, couple things we want to tell you about our game pucks. We’re going to give out game pucks. You get to vote for the winner, our nominees today. We’re getting a pizza party out of it if we win. So, help us get that pizza party. We’d appreciate that big time. All right, back to the game. It feels like forever ago, but you brought it up now. It appears that the Hawks have two lines that teams need to worry about, and a huge part of that is the emergence of Frank Nazar. Like I think that Tavo Terravine and Tyler Berusi are two of the better complimentary players in the league, but I don’t know if they’re guys that the opposition necessarily has to plan for. They’re going to get theirs. They’re going to get their points. You got to kind of know where they are, but I don’t think Tavo or Tyler Bertuzi really strikes fear in the hearts of the opponent. I think you’re getting that with getting there with Frank Nazar. That is a guy that they say this dude, we have to know where 91 is at all times. Bedard is going to make his linemates better. Yep. Venezar is going to make his linemates better. And and and look like putting Frank Nazar with guys like Tyler Batuzi and Tavo Terravine, especially Tavo, a guy that is really skilled at distributing distributing the puck uh around the offensive zone. Like yeah, I I I think that is a that is a really good trio of guys to put together. You have uh Bertusi who’s, you know, you he has a knack for being in the right spot around the net when you need him to be. Nazar and Terrain are guys that can get him the puck in that in that area. Uh Tavo, like I said, a really good offensive distributor, uh reliable in the defensive zone as well. That’s a guy that we saw tonight can spring a guy with speed like Frank Nazar with a really nice precise pass. And Frank Nazar has a ton of skill in his hands offensively, a ton of speed, um, and at both ends of the ice is engaged and willing, um, can be relied on defensively. Like he’s getting penalty kill, uh, responsibilities this season. Like, that is a really good trio of guys that are going to bring different elements of the game together. I’m not going to say that it’s going to be better than the top line, but I feel like that might be a line that night in and night out you don’t need to worry about. I would hope that would be the case. I mean, you could make the argument that that line could end up with more than a top line. Maybe if if we’re just talking about point totals, it could. Yeah. Yeah. Or I mean, I think you could at least predict, right? I mean, Right. That that’s that’s a big game changer. But I think you’re looking at uh potentially very similar numbers between a two lines. Yeah. Six or seven. Especially like it’s got to stop. I’m sorry. You did it. You doing this. This was supposed to do not say six or seven. Come on. Yes. Leave it to the young people like Darren Pang to say it six times during a game. This existed a long time. Or you go down here and then you get fined by the NFL if you’re Travis Kelsey, right? Like these things. Anyway, I forgot what I was saying. I got thrown off because of the uh the 67 thing the point totals between the two the two lines. Um they I mean yeah by the end of this season, you know, that top trio and the second line trio, the difference in points could be six or seven. Um, but I I I think you really have two guys down the middle in Conor Bard and Frank Nazar that I think we’re starting to see the emergence of two guys that can drive their line. And again, it’s early. It’s the third preseason game. But you, this is what Blackhawks fans have to hold on right now. what you have to hold on to is guys like Baddard and Nazar uh and the rest of this young group looking like they’re ready to go. And so far through the first half of the preseason, it really I’m getting even more excited that like, hey, I think we’re I think we’re ready to take that next step as the rebuild progresses to where the young guys are here and they’re going to start taking over the team. And this is what we were hoping this year would be, right? We’re not so worried about the standings at the end of the day where they fit, but it’s how does it look? Yeah. And if you want to write off this win, this 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild as they didn’t have their best players fine, but like there were a lot of games the Hawks won last year, actually there weren’t, but a lot of the games that the Hawks won last year was oh my god, how do they win that? of like today’s Bears game. Yes. Like they probably should not have won that and three or four different things went their way. Yeah. Very few wins out of last year’s 25 were like were like tonight where start to finish you didn’t worry about it, right? And that’s what that’s that’s my point is like this was a game where the teams were pretty even. Like I there was no point where I felt like I would say except for the very end where the Wild have a power play and they have the goalie pulled and it’s six on four of course pushing, right? But as as many times as I saw the Wild bring the pressure and dictate the play, we saw the Hawks answer and do the same thing where there were several shifts where the Wild could not clear the zone, could not get the puck away from the Hawks, or they had three or four scoring chances in one shift. Like that is a rarity last year. Very rarely would you see the Hawks control play, get three, four shots, three, four opportunities, and then, you know, maybe the goalie saves it, it gets cleared, they stop to the blue line, and they refresh, they start again. Like, those are the sort of things we haven’t seen yet. Hopefully, it translates to the regular season. Like you said, Mario, all we have to go on right now is what we’re seeing. But I think you’re seeing a team, and I I I think that Tyler Bertusi is like I think Jeff Flashel is his guy. It just feels like there’s some kind of connection between those two where Bertusi had his best seasons under Blasell and and Bertusi strikes me as a kind of guy that uh that Blash can get through to and I think Bertusi likes playing the brand of hockey that Blash does. And I think it it looks like in short order this team has sort of bought into the messaging of Jeff Blash. And I’m not going to come here and pretend like he’s the second coming of Scotty Bowman or Joel Quenville or anything like that. I’m not doing that. But I do think there has been a delivery of the message since the first day that really can’t be ignored by these guys. And every player we talk to, of course, they’re all going to say like, “We like playing for this coach.” They’re not going to say, “No, I don’t.” But they almost interrupt the question to tell you how much they enjoy playing for Jeff Washel. Mhm. Like I remember we asked um was it uh it was Kaiser? Kaiser seemed very excited. Yeah. You said like first impressions of Jeff Blit and he was like, “Oh, that’s awesome.” It’s like he he literally cut your syllable off to get his point across while playing for Jeff Blow. And I think when you have belief in your staff, you’re more likely to sort of buy in and do the things that that that the staff is is is preaching. And look, I think when you look back to Jeremy Cowton, not that we want to do that, but that’s the opposite thing is he came in, those guys, those Hall of Famers looked at each other like, “Right, what is this guy talking about?” And it was destined to fail. Destined to fail. I think you hire Jeff Washel with a young team. Uh he’s been he’s done it before in Detroit. He goes to Tampa to work under John Cooper. comes in refreshed, having learned the lessons of the first job, having learned some lessons from the best coach in hockey and John Cooper, and applies those things to this camp. And I think we’ve seen a really solid response from the Hawks here. And one thing too I liked before we hit the break zone and I think players like this too after that first preseason loss against Detroit where the team looked really discombobulated, really scrambly, really out of it. He basically went out and said, “Look, these guys were tired. I’ve been working them hard in camp. Maybe I should have laid off a little bit.” He didn’t say that loss is on me, but he basically said like, “It’s understandable. I’m not going to, as much as I’m hard on these guys in practice and want them to compete, want them to give 100% all the time, I’m not going to get down on them for this performance because there are some couple things I did that played into this the circumstance we had. And I think players hear that and they love that. They love that because that way when you’re preaching accountability to the players as a coach, if you can take on accountability yourself, it becomes a two-way street with the players and they’re all right, fine. You know what? Yeah, we were dog ass tired from doing, you know, from getting to back skate, then having to play a game and we’re out of gas. Camp has been hard and we went and played a game and got embarrassed. At least he said, “You know what? I maybe didn’t put these guys in the best situation to win.” And that stuff resonates with players almost as much as like his systems in the day-to-day does. Yeah. I I think you you see that from your coach and you know that he’s not just it’s not like a uh a situation where it feels like oh I’m just he’s looking down on his players and like they’re the ones at fault and I’m my system is perfect and they’re not executing it blah blah blah like he knew he knew that that team in the first preseason game was going to be tired. he knew that game was going to be a struggle and it played out on the ice as such. Um, and it was the first preseason game and it was a lot of young kids, right? All playing in a new system to them as they’re as they’re implementing this throughout the training camp. So, for him to say like if he had gone out there and and said, “I don’t know why they were gassed. I don’t know why they don’t understand my system yet.” Like that’s an easy way to lose uh that room and that that belief if you’re just like, “Well, you’re just going to bus toss us on the first preseason game.” Like, yeah. Yeah. He he he I’m sure uh knew what he was doing when he when he was talking to the media after the game and talked to us uh after that when they came back in town and um doing it be not because he’s just trying to save his butt, but also because he’s just being honest. Yeah, I think we were at that practice the day after the loss. We were sort of expecting him to be like, “This is what I’m talking about. We did ABCDE EFG wrong.” And he’s like, “These guys were tired. We hadn’t worked through special teams yet.” It’s understandable. Before we hit a ad break, I want to shout out. By the way, I don’t know. I’m actually not sure if our takeovers have sold out or not. All of your takeovers have sold out. Have they for sure? Yeah. Two. You guys are the internet. You guys are one of the few beats I think that sell out in like days. Well, that’s true. But I think we may have had a few left for the season finale and maybe one or two left for the suite. Maybe. I want to give a quick shout out, too. We have three anonymous donations. We have a $5 donation, a $20 donation, and another $20 donation to Big Brothers and Big Sisters. I appreciate it. Keep them coming, guys. Now, I need to know cuz we’ve been promoting this all week. What was it that I said that motivated the donations? I’m wondering if it’s the fact that we need to beat the other All City networks. H competition always. Chicago likes to win, baby. And Cicho Blackhawks truly has some of the most devoted, dedicated fans in all of the networks. We have 400 people watching right now after a preseason victory on a Sunday night. And the Bears just won. And the Bears just won. Love it. There are two tickets available for the January 19th game against the Winnipeg Jets. That is the return of Jonathan Taes to the United Center. Uh that game is in the suite. Yep. Two tickets available there. And the final of our three uh takeovers this year, the first of the three uh is sold out December 13th against Detroit at uh that’s the return of Alex Dbrinket and Patrick Kaine to Chicago for I don’t know was the third time that they’re coming back. Um but the third of the three is the regular season finale. Uh April 15th at home against the San Jose Sharks. There are 10 tickets left uh for that takeover, the showdown between uh the vibes of the Sharks and the Hawks. And you know what? After tonight, I’m willing to say that game might have playoff implications for the Blackhawks. That’s right. I want a quick shout out again because we have more donations. We have a $20 anonymous donation, a $50 anonymous donation. Let’s go. Steve Petroski donated $20 and anonymous $5. Appreciate it, guys. Let’s go. Thank you everybody. Uh Sarah, I just sent you the Jeff Flash postgame. Can we grab that ASAP? Hopefully there are some news on Alex Velic in there. We’ll get to that as soon as we can. While we’re waiting for Sarah to turn that around. Should be a matter of moments. Let’s talk about Drew Kso. Um very good. I don’t think there’s a shot that he makes this team over Solder Bloom. I think they want him getting the bulk of starts in Rockford, but Yeah. Yeah, I mean he’s he looks good the end of the year, second half really after he came back from the injury in Rockford, just kind of like cleared his brain, got back to the form he he was at, you know, in college and everything and looked great, has looked good in camp, was tremendous in this game today. He was excellent in this game. Yeah, I mean it he’s had two very solid seasons. uh in the AHL with the Icehogs. Uh he had a really good showing uh in the playoff run that they had uh last season. Um if they don’t go out and get Spencer Knight in the Seth Jones trade, I I would be fine with Drew Kzo being in the NHL. Uh like being in the picture for the NHL. I I think he seems like a guy that you could throw into the NHL and be okay with it. And and at this point in his career, still a young guy, especially for goalies. Goalies tend to be NHL regulars at the same rate that guys that are, you know, forwards and defensemen uh are. It’s it’s it’s rare to see guys that are in their early 20s playing significant games as goalenders in the NHL. Um even Wolf played like played three basically three full seasons of the seasons. Yeah. Um I mean Spencer Knight a first round pick uh by the Panthers. This is this is his first year being a starter and he’s 24. Like yeah that’s also still very young but it’s you know you go back in in Blackhawks world one of the best goalies of the franchise Cory Crawford played like five six full AHL seasons. since he was 26 when he when he first became a starter uh in the NHL. So, it for for KZO to be where he’s at right now. Um I I I just think he’s on a really good path and it’s, you know, it’s a good thing to have multiple goalies that you could play in the NHL and and and be confident with. And with Kamezo, like he’s a guy that I know he’s not as publicized as, you know, spotlighted as Frank Nazar is, but he’s another one of those guys that is just very self-confident in in himself. Um I remember talking with him uh after the Spencer Knight trade and just saying like hey does that what you know how do you react to that knowing that you know you were or you are still looked at as a goalie of of the future in some capacity with this organization. He was just like I doesn’t change anything I’m doing like I’m working I’m continuing to work on myself and focus on what I can control and getting better and and all that stuff. So, I mean, he’s he’s a guy that that believes in his in his own skills and capabilities, and tonight was a really solid performance. You saw a lot of what makes him uh what can make him consistent is the fact that he’s very controlled in his net. Like, he’s not scrambly, he’s not swimming, he doesn’t rely on athleticism to make saves. He relies on positioning and being in the right spots. a lot like Cory Crawford was where you know you don’t all you don’t see too many acrobatic highlight saves because he’s where he’s supposed to be to make the highest percentage save uh on on the shots he faces. That’s uh a lot of people I know it’s a different sport, but a lot of people criticize Ryan Samberg for never diving. And the thought was if Ryan Samberg’s not diving, he can’t get to the ball cuz he’s going to get to most things. Yeah. Uh is Jeff Flashel ready to go? Yeah. Two seconds. Two seconds. Okay. Hopefully we get an update on Alex Vlic. I know on the broadcast they speculated maybe like a a skate cut him or something like that. Hopefully uh whatever it is, it’s not too serious and I’m sure we won’t have a full diagnosis here, but at least some insight. Yeah, at least let’s hope it’s precautionary. Let’s find out right now from Jeff Flashel. This courtesy of the Chicago Blackhawks. Frank had his first hattick today. I know it’s preseason, but how great is that for him? No, it’s good. Actually, I just thought, you know, some sometimes guys score and they play fine. I thought he played really good tonight. He deserved uh uh the opport the goals he got and I think he created more opportunities. I thought he was really really skating. It’s it was uh probably another level than than where he’s been at and and it’s more the level that I think uh that has led to his success uh you know through the course of the end of last year into uh into into the World Championships. And so I think it was great for him to be skating at that level. That’s a sign of good things to come. Uh what did you think about Drew Kesso’s performance tonight? I thought Drew played good. You know, I think Drew, I’ve watched Drew a lot as he was coming up uh at the US national program. Played for a good friend of mine, Seth Appford. And uh you know, Drew is a good goalie. He’s uh he’s generally does a really good job of um doing a kind of taking up the net. Uh he’s very efficient in how he plays, uh makes people beat him, and and I thought he did a real good job of that tonight. Uh you know, especially we got a little bit hairy at times in the in the third period especially, and I thought he he held his held his net really well. And what did you think of the young defenseman core tonight? It was good. Um, you know, I thought, uh, uh, there’s there’s always going to be ups and downs and there’s going to be learning opportunities in in in games like this. That’s what the preseason’s for anyways. And and I think when you have a young decore, um, you know, that’ll be the the the story through the course of the season. They they do some really good stuff. And then there’s some things that we got to learn and continue to get better at. But that’s okay. That’s what uh uh that’s what growth is for. And and so, you know, we understand that and um let’s keep putting positions to grow. All right. All right. The question was not asked. So, just a little behind the curtain, if if the beat does not travel to Minnesota, which apparently was the case today, the PR staff handles the questions. Um, and as you would imagine, the PR staff is doing other things during the course of the game, so they may not have even known to ask about Alex Blastic. I will send a text right now seeing if we can get an update on Alex Blastic. Uh, hopefully we can get one by the end of the show. Yeah. Um it was, you know, it was an awkward hit uh early in the third period and he skated a he he was skating back towards the bench and it looked like it was either a limp or just something was uncomfortable with him uh heading back to the bench. He, you know, kind of waved. I think he probably was waving down one of the trainers. Um and then it was mentioned on the uh the broadcast that he wasn’t on the bench, hadn’t didn’t play the rest of the third period. So hopefully, again, hopefully it’s nothing serious. Uh hopefully it might just be like a minor tweak or something like that or just something was off. Best case scenario, maybe it was just equipment failure of some sort. Um but we’ll see uh if we can get an update, but hopefully nothing too bad. Um yeah, and that that I mean, you want you for the defensive group. A question was asked about the young young defenseman today having to step up because Alex Vlic was gone uh for the third period for that defensive group. You want to have Vic available because he is an anchor for that group. Yeah, I mean that not not having Alex Wic changes a lot like that that’s a I mean good news for Matt Grizzlick probably. Um but losing Alex Vic would be not great. Um we’ve got a minute of Frank Nazar here. Again, we’re just playing stuff at random. Might as well. Maybe Frank was asked. I don’t know. Let’s find out. Here’s Frank Nazar, courtesy of the Chicago Blackhawks. So, you had your first hat-tick. I know it’s preeason, but how does it feel getting that? It definitely feels good. Obviously, I know it doesn’t really count, but um to, you know, play the last game Detroit and kind of get get shut on myself, have a few chances, and then come in today and really execute on those those plays and and put the puck in the net. It’s always always a good feeling. And now you have four points in your first two uh preseason games. Do you feel like your camp has been really good? How do you feel like everything’s been going so far? Honestly, I just lucky enough to play with some guys that can can put me in good spots with the puck and um you know, Bert and and Table were really good today and honestly, it’s not really I just focus more on the process than than the result. And um I think we did a lot of good things today. And what did you think about Drew’s play tonight? Yeah, he was he was awesome. I think he was he was dynamite. really, you know, kept us kept us going in the game and kept us in there and um just it’s always nice to have a guy you can rely on back there and um you know, he he really brought it tonight. Do you think we’ll keep seeing the 67 Sally throughout the season or do you think it’ll switch it up? I don’t know. It might stay in preseason. All right, there is Frank Nazar after his hattrick game today. It’s preseason hat-tick. He said it doesn’t count. I count it. It counts. Hey, who who will ever forget where they were the night of September 28th, 2025 when Frank Joshua Blackwell won’t had his had his preseason hattick. All right, so let’s talk about this uh developing defensive roster battle. Um I always I always listen to what Darren Pang has to say because I feel like if you listen closely, he kind of gives you some insight as to where things are. And before today’s game, he said Ardum Lefchev needs to have a good game. Mhm. And then after today’s game, he said Arnam Lechnov had a good game. I don’t know if he’s, you know, I don’t know if he knows something that maybe we don’t that maybe Lefchov was in danger of of maybe starting in Rockford. I don’t think that’s the case, but from what looked like a certain like before the preseason started, we said looks like Delmos’s got a lead and then maybe Cchinsky, then maybe Allen. I feel like that is totally flipped and now it’s Allen, Korchinsky, and Delmastro. Could be. Yeah. Look, you’re we know uh we’ve seen and we’ve gotten to know uh Darren Pang over the last few seasons. Uh we see who he talks to around the organization. I think he’s pretty plugged in to uh to get an understanding of what he’s saying on the broadcast and feel confident in what he’s saying and what he’s bringing uh that insight to. So, if he’s saying something about I think this player needs to needs to show a little bit, I think that means he’s probably heard that from someone else. He’s also very knowledgeable about the game as well. Uh so, yeah, I I will put weight on a lot of things. uh that he has to say and and and I would agree too from watching the first few preseason games you wanted to see Arm Levchenov have better performances than he already did. So I think tonight he had a a good performance like something that when you talk when we we’ve talked at Nauseium going into this season about will he make the team what role will he play all this stuff you look at the right side of the of the defense besides Conor Murphy they don’t have anybody that is an established right shot defenseman so you need a Renzel and a Levinov to be NHL ready because that’s going to give you the best uh right side that you can have. So I think Levinov has gotten better as the preseason go has gone on. He seems like one of those one of those guys that might need a little bit of time to get the motor going like an old car. Um but once it does, he’s he’s a guy that’s got a lot of horsepower under the hood. He feels like a guy that will ramp it up when the time calls for it. And I I’ll say too, like today, second half of the game, not he didn’t do anything wrong in the first half, but the second half of the game, you really noticed him getting engaged in the game. Uh, as I mentioned earlier, physical in front of the net, not taking any crap, not backing down from anybody, getting people out of Drew Kso’s face, and moved the puck well. Didn’t see the catastrophic turnover we saw or the catastrophic misread we saw against Detroit tonight. There was one play where he had I think this is in the first period he had the puck kind of uh to the right of Drew Kamesa and kind of threw one like towards the middle of the ice and it almost got intercepted. That’s a learning moment. You’re going to see that uh from a young defenseman no matter how good they end up being. We saw it from Duncan Keith and Brent Sebrook early in their careers. So Leanov will not be any different there. But I liked his game a lot tonight. I think to me it was a bit of a okay like a bit of a reset for me on Levino because some of the stuff I had seen I did not love and it is very important as you said Mario that he makes this team and is a right is the right side defenseman for one of the three because they don’t really have any other options and I don’t want him to make the team simply because they don’t have any other options but tonight I think he went a long way in sort of quilling those fears. Yeah. Yeah, I’m I’m at this point comfortable um having him in the NHL and just having him learn. Like you saw him last last season in Rockford and it was streaky, but I think as the season went on, it got better. And when we saw him in Chicago, it was a different version of him than when he was in Rockford. And I think there is something to be said to him needing a challenge. And not to say that he overlooks time playing in the AHL or or whatever, but I think he you get you get it a lot with elite level athletes where they want to feel like they have to work hard. Yeah. To to get something right. So you give him time in the NHL, practicing in the NHL, playing in the NHL. that’s going to be a challenge over an 82 game season that I think he’ll he’ll respond to and he’ll rise rise to uh that challenge and hopefully get to a point where you’re saying hey that number two pick with Levinov that was the right move. Um but I’ I’d be I’d be totally comfortable with him being in the NHL to learn those lessons, make those mistakes and grow and grow his game from there. Um, I think it it betters him, it betters the Hawks. Uh, it just and it gives them that, you know, that left right shot balance. So, you don’t have to have like, you know, Nolan Allen or Ethan Del Mastro here and play their their offside. I know they’ve done it for like the last three years basically. It’s not a it’s not a difficulty for them, but I think if you naturally have left side, right side shots, um it’s just it’s just a more natural balanced setup. And and on the left side, talking about Del Mastro, Allen, Kchinsky, uh fighting for basically that that last defensive spot. Um I know some people are saying like, “What if Del Mastro comes back in the next game and has a really good game?” Well, good. Sure. Like that. All we can do is talk about where it stands right now. these games is a like it’s it’s a it’s a flowchart of where these guys feel like they’re at. And so far, Nolan Allen’s this weekend strung together two good performances. Kevin Kchinsky has strung strung together two good performances. And now it’s up to Del Mastro the next time he gets in to respond. Like that’s that’s how a roster battle works through preseason. Every game, every shift counts for these guys. And that’s why no one Allen played as hard as he did. Yes, Sarah. Quick interruption. We have a $500 super chat. Sorry, not $500 or the sup super chat, but a $500 donation. Big brother, big sister. And it is from a blue uh chameleon. Blue chameleon. Blue chameleon. Love that. Thank you very much. Thank you so much. This is going to a great cause. We appreciate it. Green chameleon with that donation. Uh if you want to become a big bbbs.org/allcity or kick in a donation. Love that. Thank you very much. Blue chameleon. A slight update on Vastic from Scott Powers. He just says, “Sounds like the Blackhawks expect to have a better sense on what’s going on with him tomorrow.” Now, tomorrow, okay, from what we understand, is an off day. So, uh, we may have to wait till Tuesday to figure out what’s up with Alex Flick. Hopefully, it’s nothing too bad, nothing too serious because that does put a wrench in things for sure. If anything, maybe we’ll just get a medical update email or something like that. That would be nice. Yes, that would be nice. Um because that’s certainly an important piece of what the Blackhawks are trying to do here. I don’t want to wait. Yeah, I don’t like that. It’s Yeah, it’s a little nervy, but hopefully again hopefully it’s something minor. If it’s something that it’s just like he’s going to he’s just going to be done for the preseason. Okay. I I’m not worried. Alex Vassic’s not in a roster battle. Yeah. Use caution. be precautionary if if if it needs to be uh like that. If it’s anything more than that, then like I think you like you said earlier, Matt Grizzlick, you might be a black hole. You are a Chicago black hole. You you may have earned yourself a contract uh if it if it comes down to it. But um yeah, I I think I think the the left side of the defensive battle of of the defensive group battle is is still up in the air. It’s still open. I’m not I haven’t seen Kchinsky, Damashro, or Allen, any of them be undeniable, but that’s what you want one of them to be by we get to October 5th. Yeah. Um, couple players we haven’t mentioned. Wyatt Kaiser today, two assists, plus three, 2530 of ice time for him. Yeah. Uh, that is a guy playing with supreme confidence. We’ve talked about that all preseason. That’s something new, but he needs to be that needs to be mentioned is how solid Wyatt Kaiser looks. Uh we had in this game too Samuel Savois, Nick Lardis, and AJ Spely played. Uh not a lot for any of those guys. Uh Savois was a minus one with four hits, 854 of ice. Lardis was zeros across the board. He had two hits in a giveaway uh and one block shot. and AJ Spellellacy was a minus one with a hit, a giveaway, and a block shot. Not really noticeable from those guys. No, they’re they’re uh Spely and Savois. Their job is to play physically, and they sort of did that. Four, you know, four hits from uh Savois, one from Spely, so that’s fine. Um didn’t see the flash I was hoping to see from them, but it’s first game and Savois’s first game of the preseason. both of them coming off of uh some minor injuries they’ve had in camp. So, yeah, they haven’t been in Spely had one full practice uh leading into this game. Um Seavois Yeah, he’s been doing work on his own with the injuries group. Uh hasn’t been in a practice in a couple of days, but gotten to the game. So, that’s I mean that’s good sign for him that he’s he’s back to 100%. Um, but yeah, I mean, neither of those guys really feel like at this stage that they’re battling for a roster spot, but you want Sevois to be one of those guys that goes to Rockford and is one of the key contributors. Um, and like you said, he’s not really a points contributor. It’s more of the Yeah. Um, you know, the the defensive side of the game, the physical side of the game, being more of an agitator. Um, and Spell is going to eventually go back to Windsor in the OHL. he’s going to have an elevated role than he that he has the last few seasons. Um, but you want him to kind of get his gears going and hit the ground running. Uh, like the rest of the juniors guys have hit the ground running. Um, Nathan Bame, Jack Pridam, Merrick Vaner, they’ve all scored at least one or two goals uh, in their games back in in juniors since leaving camp. So, that’s exciting for for those guys. Um, and yes, I feel like Spely once he gets back to Windsor, he’s going to hopefully hit the ground running. And he’s a guy that um AJ from from DNVR was was uh tweeting with me about him today. He was just he’s he’s excited to see what AJ Spely can be. Um so even from an outside perspective, like that is someone that is on other radars of a guy someone can be a fan of. And yeah, I I really like uh what Spellellisy can be. Um, and hopefully he reaches that uh that potential. All right, before we reveal the winner of the game Pucks, we got to let you know about something cool happening at CHGO this week. The Cubs are in the postseason. Their series with the San Diego Padres’s begins Tuesday. All three games, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 2:00 at Wrigley Field. And you could join our CHGO Cub show for a live watch along. Then a postgame show after every game. Luke Stuckmire, Patrick Norton, Justin Roman, Kevin Wells, Joey Chrisopoulos, Jared Willis, Brennan Miller, and Cory Freriedman will all be part of the watchalongs, all be part of the post games. We need more chairs. We’re going to need more chairs. We’re going to need a bigger boat. Uh, but it’s going to be a great time. If you’re sitting at home 2:00 watching the Cubs, throw on the CHGO Cubs simal cast, watch along with those guys. You know, they live and die with the Cubs as much as you, the Cubs fan, does. So, don’t miss those watchalongs. Don’t miss those postgame shows and hopefully the Hawk the Cubs can take two out of three from San Diego and advance on. Hopefully, that’s going to happen, Sarah. Yeah, it’s going to happen. Yeah, they’re getting hot at the right time. They are. They just swept the Cardinals. PCA is playing well. Uh uh Suzuki starting to hit homers again. Kyle Tucker’s back. Let’s go. Let’s go. All right. Who is our winner for game pucks? Frank Nazar. What was the percentage? I imagine it was quite a blowout. Uh, as of right now, we have 259 votes, 83% Frank Nazar, and 17% Drew Kamezo. Ah, it’s okay. I mean, I mean, that’s basically six out of every seven votes for Frank Nazar. So, this is what the new square jar is going to be on. Hold on. The the moment jar is going to be the 67 jar. Hold on. It’s so bad. I think that’s I think that math is actually spot on. donate to Big Brothers and Big Sisters for Mario to stop saying 67. It will take you a 6,700 donation for me to stop doing 67. There you go. Uh, by the way, if I don’t understand it, you don’t have to understand it either. And just, you know, let’s all the eyes are on the Bears right now, right? We’ve got 400 people watching this show. Well, 400 eyes are on us. If you want the people that make the t-shirts to recognize that we need t-shirts made, the best way you can do it, aside from being here during the show and of course hitting that like button, which too many of you have not done, tell a friend. There’s going to be some Hawks excitement this year. You know, I think the Bard like that shine has worn off a little bit. It’s still very exciting that he’s here, but I think the people that were really jazzed about it already have the jersey. I’ve already seen him play live. There’s more shiny things here. Yeah. Now you’ve got Nazar, potentially more Renzel, Levan, like so many of these young players coming. The vibes are going to be a lot better this year. So Hawks fans that maybe haven’t heard of us for the first few years cuz the Hawks have been so bad. Quite frankly, a lot of pe and they’ve been also hard to find on TV. Now that the TV deal is air quotes settled with their air quotes advertisements, uh we should have more people watching the Hawks, which means we should have more people finding us. We are your only Hawks postgame shows during the preseason. Yes, recognize that. Recognize that. We are the ones that are here for you instead of replaying interviews from 6 months ago, we’re here live when the flagship is not. So, hit that like button and tell your friends that if there is a Hawks game, no matter what channel it’s on, no matter how no matter where it’s blacked out, we will be here after the game talking Hawks 82 times plus. You can’t black out YouTube. That’s right. Unless we take our pants off and we’re not going to do that. Maybe you can. We’re not going to do that. Not yet. Not until Frank Nazar gets another hat-tick in the regular season. So, we’re all assuming you’re not the only Hawks fan in your friend group. Make sure they know about us. Make sure they know where to find us. And then we’ll get them to be die hards. Let us do that work. You just let them know, hey, I’ve been really enjoying this Blackhawks podcast. Here’s a link to the audio. Here’s a link to the YouTube. Check them out. I think you’ll enjoy it. That goes such a long way. Such a long way. So, we’d appreciate that big time. And uh we’re off tomorrow. No show tomorrow. We are back Tuesday postgame for the first home game of the preseason. Cannot wait to get back to the UC and enjoy Blackhawks hockey. October 1st. Let’s go. Back back in the UC. It’s October. That means hockey is it’s here. Yeah. As soon as we as soon as we dropped the puck October 1st for the first of three home preseason games, we are just six or seven days away from the start of the regular season in Florida. I can’t wait. All right, that’s it. I’m ending the show. Sarah, can we go home? All right, hit that like button your way out. We’ll talk to you Tuesday after Hawks and who are they playing? Does it matter? Blues, Red Wings. Uh, Red Wings. Red Wings. Red Wings. Yeah, it’s one of the three always. They they only play six or seven opponents. So, goodbye. [Music] [Applause] We all sitting like the mayor.

Y'all need to bugger off with this Tank bollocks. First it was Lockedon, then CHR, now you lot.
Frank is fast, tanks are not. Frank is a winner. Tanks try to lose. Frank cuts through defence like a rocket. Tanks rumble over everything.
Tank Bollocks. Lazer Nazar
Wow. So now fans are quiet because we are winning preseason games. So when we lose 1 game, it’s panic in the comments but when it’s a game that we win. Nobody starts to think positive out of the rebuild.Nazar is proving that he is a potential star in this league. I’ve been saying this all offseason. We will lose games but when players like Nazar who shows up and puts on a show. That what matters than the standings. The kids can play.
What a good day to be a Chicago sports fan
