MLB Network [BREAKING NEWS] MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers rallies for club-record 97th win in Game 162
up today. Yeah, you didn’t want them to go ahead and get swept. The last series of the year at home against the Cincinnati Reds, even though the Twins helped the Brewers out in securing that homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, that number one seed, best record in all of baseball, uh, and and then the tiebreaker of the Mets. You didn’t want that to happen and just kind of back into things, right? And so, they went ahead and they got the win and then they secured their best record in baseball with 97 and 65. That’s actually a big deal that they didn’t finish tied with the Philadelphia Phillies at 96 and 66. So, they went ahead, they have the best record and then also the most wins in franchise history. Just a remarkable season from this team. It’s been fun to watch and they’re doing it 18 of the 28 guys on this roster right here in September. KGER have three years of MLB service or less. That’s that’s remarkable what they’ve been able to do with such a young group. All right. So, despite the loss here by the Reds today, they are in the playoffs. The Mets throw up a dud here in a game that they needed to win because the Reds lost to get into the playoffs. They lose 4 nothing. Francisco Londor a double play to end the game in the ninth. And this team was the best in baseball through mid June and turned out to be one of the worst after that. The high price Mets, the Reds, they deserve to be there. They were one of the hottest teams in baseball over the course of the month of September and came fighting back and now they are celebrating here in Milwaukee in their clubhouse. They will be the final wildcard team in the National League. So, they’re going to party it up here for a little bit and then get on a plane and head to LA because they’re going to face the Dodgers in the opening round of the wild cards starting on Tuesday. And then the Philadelphia Phillies await the winner of that series. Of course, the Brewers await the winner of the San Diego Chicago Cub series. And that of course starts here in Milwaukee next Saturday over on the uh the AL side. Some things yet to be uh fully determined over there yet. But the Blue Jays secure the number one seed overall and Detroit and Cleveland uh struggling to get their wins here today. But the Guardians look like they’re going to wrap up everything as far as the uh AL Central division champs. They were tied there, but they win the tiebreaker. So, Detroit in at one point with the best record, but they’re barely in. It’s amazing how this all turned out. And you love it that there’s so much meaningful baseball on the last day of the season. And I’m not sure anyone wants to play the Reds right now. They’re going to be a handful for the Dodgers. They have great starting pitching and they’re hot. We’ve seen this from a number of teams that sneak in on the last day like the Reds. They go ahead and make a run, but we’ll see. Uh, you know, I do the Brewers, who do the Brewers want to play here in in the first round. I’m I’m kind of pulling for the Cubs. I know it’s kind of a coin flip there between the Cubs and the Padres’s, but Greger, I know, you heard it first. The Padres’s look super dangerous on paper. They might show out once the bright lights go on. And then what would it mean for this team if they do go ahead and beat the Chicago Cubs with the home field advantage here at American Family Field? So, uh, I think that they would then go on this, uh, they have crazy momentum on their side if they went ahead and did that. You’re writing some serious book here for the postseason, but that’s okay. It’s been a storybook season. Yep. Add that add that all in to be sure. All right, so the Brewers activate Trevor McIll here in this game. Of course, he’s been injured for most of the month of September and uh was able to come back and of course they’re trying to figure out if he’s going to be the true closer that he was throwing 100 101. Not there quite yet, Vinnie, but uh made really good progress here in his first outing in an inning that he pitched earlier in this game. Hadn’t pitched in since August 24th. And I thought he looked, you know, sharp enough as a good test for him to come back on the mound. He didn’t remember he didn’t have any rehab appearances. Just threw a bunch of bullpens through some live uh live batting practices against hitters, against his own teammates. And that last pitch that he threw, he burned off the edge at 98 mph. So that is a good sign that the velocity is ticking back up. But the curveball at times wasn’t as sharp, but again, that is something that is he’s going to get going to need to get over the hump. you know, you add the extra adrenaline and he’s going to be, I think, right back to where we, you know, have seen Trevor McIll all season long. One of the best closers in all of baseball. 30 saves, third third most in the National League. So, um, he is going to be a huge piece for them to have back at full strength for sure because we saw what the bullpen did today and how short shortened the games can be with some of these arms that the Brewers have been throwing out. Not only the, you know, just the the the body of work from the season, but they’re they’re hot right now. You know, Urebe’s been throwing the ball exceptionally well. Jared Kanig has as well. And don’t forget about Aaron Ashby, you know. So, you add all those guys up together and these games could get real short for the Brewers if they have the have the lead in the playoffs. Yeah. McIll gets the win home. McIll, Ashby pitched two innings. Patrick Canning and Aribe got the save here today, his seven. So, that’s how everything unfolds there. The other player you got to look at and you say, “This is perfect timing for Jackson Cheerio to get back on track. He had he had a a rough road trip. hasn’t had the greatest month of September. Battling through some some injuries and recovery as well, but it seems like he’s back on track. Hit the home run in yesterday’s game. Uh two big hits here today. Another stolen base. So, he’s had 21 home runs and 21 stolen bases to end the regular season. Well, and I’ve been saying it all year long that it doesn’t take long for this kid to go ahead and get back on track. And he was slumping here in the month of September uh last couple of weeks. again. He has gotten back on track. Just missed the home run against the nasty breaking ball from Singer. And that’s what he can do. He can make his teammates, you know, opposing pitcher can make the teammates of Jackson look bad on a particular pitch, but he is going to be on that pitch. That’s what we saw from the breaking ball from Singer. It added another single later in the game and an opposite field base hit again. And so, yes, and this is a guy that can carry you in the playoffs. Remember last playoffs he was 5 for 11, hit two home runs in a game at a as a 20-year-old, you know, so he couldn’t even participate in the champagne celebration last year when they clinched. So he is hopefully going to be able to hopefully he can participate now now that he’s 21. He can now they give him and the Brewers give him that opportunity to do so this year. Hopefully three more times. He’s going to have a he’s going to have a big hand. And I mean, if he’s if he’s playing well, the Brewers have a really good chance of going deep here in the playoffs, among others on this team here right now. A squeeze bunk walkoff for Bryce Terra. That’s number eight for the Brewers. They’ve tied their franchise record in steals in a game. Here’s Peralta. Struck him out. There’s number 1,000. Fly ball to deep right. It is way back and out of here. Fly ball into center. Tagging is freely ball game over. Caleb Durban and Yelich with eight runs batted in. It is a new record for Yelich. That is one incredible start to a career for Jacob Miserowski. And Vaughn sends it way back. And welcome to Milwaukee. And McNeel in the center field. A base hit. Perkins throw to the plate on a hop. He is out. Ball game over. Collins. Fly ball deep into right field. Isaac Collins. It is a walk-off home run. Fly ball deep left. Monasterio. And here. 14 in a row for the Milwaukee Brewers. Contrarus highf fly ball deep left field. Did he get Yes, he’s dead. It’s a walkoff home run. Gone again for Terra. His month of August. Man, this guy’s on fire. Cheerio and Yelich. Backto back jacks. Three to one up the middle. Hits the throw home. Not in time and the Brewers on a day where they clinch can celebrate properly. When no one no one said that the Milwaukee Brewers would be in the running to win the division. Not only did you win the division, you crushed it. Celebrate what you’ve done because it’s special. All right. What do you say? [Music] That is great stuff for the Brewers celebrating after winning another division championship and of course best record in baseball. So, what a season it was. Think about some of the some of the great things they did. They won 40 games out of a stretch of 50. They won 14 games in a row. They had the record team record 97 victories most in baseball as well. And how about the crowds especially in the second half. The sellouts they averaged 32,600 fans a game. They drew 2.6 million, the 11th most in 50 plus years in franchise history. Amazing. Just an amazing year all the way around. I mean, this is a group that can go ahead and and win the whole thing, right? No one expected this team to really do anything in the division. And all of a sudden, they not only win the division, they have the best record in all of baseball. They go ahead and get that first seed and and the fans are behind it all the way. This whole state is behind it. Yes, they kind of didn’t play their best baseball the last, you know, month or so, but but so what, right? It’s a new season coming October 4th, and this team believes they can do it. I think the state believes that they can do it. This community, uh, the front office, what a remarkable job that they did all the way from Mark Anenasio on down. I mean, just a remarkable remarkable season and hopefully it’s going to be a magical season, right? Uh and they can finish off this whole thing with being crowned the champions. I think we can all we all know that they’re capable of doing so. It’s just a matter of going out and doing it now. They as they have as good a chance to win this whole thing as anybody. How about just the crowd reaction at the end of this game for that final out? We we talked before the game started how badly this fan base really wanted to win today. They they keep track of what’s going on. They know they understand 97 wins as well, but they also understand what’s going to happen starting next weekend. Yeah, they they certainly didn’t. And we didn’t want them to just back right into this thing and go ahead and lose out to the Cincinnati Reds and just hand them a playoff spot. You wanted them to make them work for it, stay competitive, play a clean brand of baseball that they’ve been playing all season long. And if they do that, they can go ahead and go 11 and eight. Remember, that’s what they need to do. That’s what the record needs to be to win the whole thing. 11 and 8. And they’re capable of doing it. Let’s see. Let’s see them execute.
