And if you want to be an everyday, all you have to do just follow along wherever you get podcast. And of course, you can watch on YouTube as well. And today we react overreact maybe to day one of training camp uh as Will Smith going back to playing wing. Michael Misa might be your 2C. Plus we look at how some of the other guys lined up to start things off and notable quotes including a lot of praise for one ML Cabbrini. Uh, so let’s get started with the big news of the day. And from the sound of it, Will Smith is going to be playing wing this season, which is a far cry from what we heard from Mike Greer at the start of the off seasonason when he said, “The plan is to move Will Smith back to center. He’s a natural centerman. We want we drafted him to be a center. We want him to play center.” Um, well, when you draft Michael Misa with the second overall pick, I we we kind of knew that this was going to happen at some point, but it seems like the Sharks are just going to hand over the keys to Michael Misa on the second line. At least that’s the plan right now. So, but let’s start with the the Will Smith part of this here. So, Smith that we know, right, started the season last year playing center. uh kind of struggled with it like moved back moved over to wing uh and started kind of moving up in the lineup and we saw Will Smith play extremely well uh in his role there right especially the second half of the season uh you know 30 points in 34 games uh was you know played with with celebrity a lot those two you you saw why like such a dynamic combination out of those two players and when you again draft a guy like Michael Misa. It gives you flexibility uh to put a guy like Will Smith in a position where he can play to his uh you know play to his strengths here and and play with a guy like Min Cabrini. Um and we we saw just how successful this group was you know this combo was last year, right? Um you know in in training camp here they’ve got Jeff Skinner on the group which makes a ton of sense, right? Jeff Skinner noted goal scorer where you can kind of let Celabbrini and Smith cook and Jeff Skinner can kind of be the guy who’s the veteran guy who’s going to kind of be in the right place at the right time and probably tuck in a bunch of really close uh you know goals there because that’s where he scores a lot of his goals is up close in front of the net. Um and that’s we’re probably gonna have a really good time with that those three guys going together. But um you know it’s it it kind of makes me feel silly that we spent this entire off season talking about the move for Will Smith to uh center and it just seems like they’re going to kind of give the keys to Michael Misa as the 2C. At least that’s the plan, right? And Ryan Warski said today like the plan is for Misa to play center during uh training camp. And so Michael Misa of course as a natural center. Uh I know we played left wing a little bit and you know for a season uh in Sagenol, but last year played center exclusively uh was you know we we’ve gone through the accolades of Michael Misa and his time with Sagenov. Um but and as someone who said you know I’ve said multiple times I think Michael Misa is a cleaner prospect than even Will Smith after a full year at Boston College. one, it makes me feel like I’m right on that if the Sharks are also kind of doing this here too. But, uh, you know, I think for the Sharks where they just see Misa as is going he’s going to be the 2C at some point and if they feel like he’s close enough now where he can win the job, you might as well just get it over with, right? Um and because we know it’s going to be most likely celebrating, you know, Misa for the next, you know, 15 years hopefully of those two guys together, you know, like what we’ve seen with um you know, with the Penguins with Crosby Malcin or Dry Cidle, um McDavid, like you know, again, we’re hoping we’re hoping Nissa and Cell Green are somewhere in that same category. Uh but that’s that’s kind of the plan here, right, for for San Jose. And if you’re going to do it, you might as well just do it. And the good thing is way the Sharks are kind of constructed and way uh the again that flexibility where if Misa struggles out of the gate, you have some options, right? You have Will Smith who has played center and you can throw him in that position and then maybe move Misa to his wing until he gets comfortable with the position and gets comfortable with the NHL. And then you can always put Misa back in at the center when he feels like you’re ready. You also have veteran Alex Wenberg who can easily slide up and kind of take that spot if you want to move Misa to the wing. Like you have some flexibility in some options if Misa doesn’t work out. But, uh, it’s I think it’s kind of refreshing where the Sharks are just like, you know, we these kids like this is it like these these guys are going to be the guys who are kind of driving the bus for us this year and uh, you know, at least in the future. And you know what? Like you might as well just get things started here because um, it’s just it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when with all these guys, right? It’s a matter of when Michael Misa becomes the 2C, right? It’s a matter of of win for Smith, right, to just put him with Celabbrini because that combination works so well last year and if things don’t work out, you have options, right? You have options to kind of move guys around and try to kind of fill the void. So, um, Misa was playing with uh with Ekkund and and Shernish today. Uh I still think like Tofolei who was uh playing on a different line I think will probably eventually slide into that spot there. Right. If you have Ekkan Misa Tofoley on a line was is kind of how I would assume things there because it kind of gives you one Eklan who is very responsible defensively. Uh kind of gives you a little bit of uh gives Misa a little bit of protection there uh when it comes to the defense as he gets used to it. And I I think Misa is going to be a strong defensive forward. uh eventually, but you know, he’s going to make mistakes as an 18-year-old. Uh and then having Tofolei, the same thing, right? Where you can have Misa and Ekkan do really cool creative things. And I think those two guys will be able to mesh very quickly. And then Tafoy, who can just kind of hang out and do the veteran thing of finding that quiet ice and scoring the, you know, getting to the front of the net and just let the the two young kids kind of run around and get him the puck. like you can see the plan for both these top lines, assuming these are going to be your top lines uh going into the season opener, but I assume we’ll we’ll see these guys together, you know, get some get some run here in the preseason. Um so, but like you can see like we know Misa was going to be in the top six at some point, right? Right. And I thought they were going to maybe do the Will Smith thing of like put him on the third line with Alex Wenberg for a little bit and you know let him get acclimated, but uh I think that’s one speaks to how highly Warsovski and Greer think of Misa and what they’re could be doing. And it also could be like let’s just throw him in the deep end and see what happens, right? And if he’s start if he swims, he swims cool. Like again, Michael Misa is pretty awesome. like there’s a reason why, you know, he’s one of the like highly touted forward prospects over the last couple seasons. Um, you know, and yes, he doesn’t have the Lester of like a even a Cellrini or Bard, but like Misa’s right up there with the Fantilis and the Carlson’s and you know the like all these other top end forward prospects who’ve been drafted over the couple like last couple seasons. Like Misa is no slouch either. And like I’ve said before, Misa would be a one se on on most teams. It’s just we’re hashtag blessed to have Minabbrini and that unfortunately pushes Misa down. But uh again that speaks to the Sharks prospect pool and just how sick it is. So, but um you know and and if he’s if he struggles again, you can pull him out, dry him off, give him some floaties, go play with Alex Wenberg for a little bit, and when you’re ready to go, we’ll try it again. You know, like there it’s just the Sharks in a really good position here to be able to kind of um work with Misa and be able to to put him in a position to succeed, right? And if you throw him in the deep end now, it works out. it works out. And if it doesn’t, you have some options. You have flexibility with both Alex Smith. Yes. Niners quarterback Alex Smith. With Alex Wenberg and with Will Smith, um where though I think either one of those guys could play 2C for you, uh until you feel like Michael Misa is ready to take on the mantle. So, uh, we’re going to look at some of the other lineup decisions, including who Sam Dickinson is playing with, kind of who some of the other defenseman are playing with to kind of give us a little bit of a insight into what the Sharks opening night roster might or lineup might look like. Uh, so we’ll get to that here in just one second. The NFL season is here and FanDuel’s making sure you’re ready for kickoff with a can’tmiss offer. Uh, as we training camp is here, guys. Uh we’re going to be talking about what’s happening at training camp. Uh we have preseason action on Sunday. Um want to of course got you covered with prospects this year as you know even though the Sharks are going to be fun, we still have an eye on the future as to uh who the next wave of Sharks prospects that are going to be coming in and hopefully making a big impact. So uh make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. So the other some of the other lineup decisions uh which is you know again you you don’t want to take things too seriously but at the same time it is intriguing to see who is playing with who right uh you know especially for you know Ryan Warowski and my career have had kind of all summer to think about it and who they want to see and who they kind of imagine playing with. So, um, you know, like I said, we we had Skinner, Celebriny, Smith, we had Dandria, Beaststead, Grundstrom. So, again, like Dandria Grundstrom, um, guys who are kind of in the mix for the bottom six spots. Bid, who’s, you know, I would assume is going to get NHL time here at some point this year and is going to be probably the number one se for the San Jose Sharks and probably the long-term 3C uh for or at least in the mix for the 3C job um there. So, at least among the Ford group that like we have those guys um you know some of the other lineups uh we had Quinton Musty, Alex Wenberg and Tyler to Foley playing together which I think is a very interesting combination there. Again, Wenberg is going to be the, you know, the 3C. Tefolio, you know, I think they’re we tool and Equin have a lot of chemistry together and I think they’ll work like you don’t have to worry about that potential chemistry there, but uh giving Musty an opportunity to play with with Wenberg and Tofoley. I really like that there, right? Especially with Wenberg who can be kind of a little bit more defensively responsible to Foley. we know exactly what to fully allows kind of Quinton Musty to kind of go out there and be that little bit of that power forward. Um, you know, that you kind of see in his game where uh especially what we saw in the the rookie face off. And I think if Musty is going to be the Quinton Musty we expect, I think kind of blending that physicality and that scoring touch is going to be his kind of bread and butter there. So, um, we had Anthony, Vincent, Vincent, uh, Huntington, and Van Rows are all going to be, um, Barracuda guys there. Like those guys playing as as well. And, uh, like Vincent, Vanro Boys are some of my favorite players to watch on the Barracuda. Like they’re they just go out like they do their jobs. You know exactly what you’re getting from them every shift and like type of of of performances. So um and then from the uh some of the other kind of bar quotequote barracuda lines uh we had Regenda Bowers and Haltonin. Uh then we also had uh Walstrom Beast and Carson Wetch. Um so Beast was kind of getting some double shifts here uh as well. So, um, you know, I think it’s interesting, especially that like we kind of know who’s probably going to be in the top mix there for for the Barracuda, but, uh, Giving kind of seeing who plays with Beaststead really well and kind of the who can kind of build chemistry quickly with Beast, not not the kind of worst thing in the world to do. And, uh, we know Carson Wet will be going back to um to the WHL this year, but you like again giving him an opportunity. I I like Beast and Wedge could be potential linemates not too long here in the future. So, um defensively defensively uh so we had Lety and Clingberg playing together which okay like kind of projected top four guys right there. Uh we had Ferraro and Ligren playing together. I know Orlav was in the C group and we we really didn’t get lines from the or the the C group today. Um or I think that’s the the white group or teal group. I forget which groups the third group to play today. Anyway, we didn’t really get lines from that group. But um so Orlav is still kind of in the mix there. But um so and then Dickinson and Deese and I I talked about it yesterday, right? who Dickinson plays with at first, it’s gonna be a little bit of telling, right? Um, and Deise is I I think the, you know, is probably going to be the seventh defenseman or at least kind of slotted right now as the seventh defenseman, but, you know, like we know Dar is stay at home type of defenseman, right-handed shot, big guy. Um, you kind of know exactly what you’re like, he’s going to be pretty steady. You know exactly what you’re getting. So, I think for the Dickinson approach here, they’re kind of easing him into it a little bit, unlike Misa where it does feel like they’re kind of throwing him into it and seeing if he can sink or swim. Uh, with the defenseman, you have to be a little bit more careful uh wi with it. And so I think right now like playing with Deese and seeing if he can kind of stick here and how he does and then maybe maybe Orlav becomes his partner at some point and um or maybe it’s Ley or whomever, right? If or maybe it is one of Ferraro and Ligrim uh type of of scenarios. But um you know I I think good spot at least it’s not one of the like I’m not like Donese I feel like is going to be on the roster. Um there, you know, I have explored the thought of maybe uh you you send him down to the AHL type of thing to give yourself some flexibility, etc., etc., but most likely going to be on the roster here. And it’s not like one of the bubble guys like Kenyon or Thompson or somebody like that where one of the younger guys, right? They’re putting Dickinson with a veteran here because that’s probably that’s what you’re going to be doing um as well. So, uh oh, sorry, Orlav was playing I think was playing with Muk Madillan. My bad. that’s who was playing on uh with the uh team white. So um all right so defensively like some of the guys there as well um with the younger players. So we had Hashe and Thompson. Thompson again a bubble guy. Hashe who’s an AHL um player like defenseman as well. Uh we had Furlong and Havlid which I really like that pair for the Barracuda as well. Furlong, who’s kind of that like shut down defensive guy, and Havt, who we saw, especially uh in the rookie tournament, has got a little bit of offensive pop, but most likely a two-way kind of defenseman like I I then we had Gormley and Beck who are going to be guys kind of fighting for positions on the Barracuda. Uh might spend some time with Witchah uh going forward. So, I think everything kind of really makes sense there for for the Sharks. Um, and kind of where who’s playing with who, right? And, uh, giving some young guys opportunities like U. Musty and guys like Ashernov and you know a guy like Dickinson given some of these guys to kind of show what they can do knowing full well with the exception of of Dickinson that these two guys you know will be in the AHL but we want to give them some run with NHL guys kind of give them a taste of it here a little bit. So, um, we had plenty of quotes, uh, including a lot of lot of positive talk, uh, about M celebrini, captainish type of talk about M celebrini. Uh, so we’re going to dig into some of the quotes coming out of training camp uh, here in just one second. I’ve been meaning to tell you about my new favorite jeans brand, Doer. I’ve been living in their performance denim straight jeans. I’m actually wearing them right now and honestly they’ve completely changed the game for me. I love my Der jeans because uh one they look great, right? I mean, you don’t want to put on a pair of pants and they make you look terrible. Uh and I I think Der makes me look pretty good. So, uh but two, they’re also extremely comfortable. Uh they have five times the stretch of traditional denim. They feel stretchy without looking stretchy. Uh the jeans also are made of coolmax that regulates your body temperature and wicks moisture. though again keeps you comfortable especially uh if it’s a little warm outside. Um Derer combines classic jeansear style with the kind of comfort and performance you get from athletic world wear. The best of both worlds and uh there’s a reason why they call them the world’s most comfortable pants. Don’t take my word for it. Go try a pair on yourself. Do or just open a store in Hayes Valley so you can feel the difference firsthand. Go check them out on 567 Hay Street. Mention our promo code locked on SF in store. Bringing you the daily leaguewide stories that matter the most with local coverage you love from Locked On. Find Locked Onel on YouTube, wherever you listen to podcast. So, let’s start uh with some of the big quotes around celebrating today. and Nick Ley, who uh spoke to the media for the first time since uh being acquired by the San Jose Sharks via uh from the Waiverss. Um he had a very very intriguing quote. Uh this is from uh Will Espie. Uh so uh Lety on Celebrity. I don’t know if you saw, but he danced around me. There was a video of of Celebrity just stealing Let’s jock. just had him. Uh, yeah, poor Nick Lety. Um, but he danced me, I fell. It goes back to his work ethic. He’s one of the first guys out there, one of the last guys off. And there’s a sign of a true leader. I’ve seen many captains do that throughout the years. Ding ding ding bell bell bell ding ding ding ding. Interesting. Then friend of the show, Max Miller. Uh so he had a quote from uh Ryan Reeves. So Reeves said uh the says the NHL doesn’t give Moscreen enough respect. He’s up there with some of the guys if not better than some of those guys that people put ahead of him. Uh he also mentioned uh I think guys put maybe Bard and some of the other guys much further ahead of him. I don’t see it that way at all. So I I know both new guys, right? Nick Letty, M Ryan Ree, you know, both just got here. Uh maybe they’re trying to kind of fluff up, you know, and and you know, be a good teammate, etc., etc. Like both these guys have been around for a while, you know, like Ryan Reeves has been around. He’s been on a lot of teams, right? And he’s played for a lot with a lot of different people. Same thing. Nick Ley, you know, over a thousand games. He’s been on a bunch of teams. Um just interesting that they are talking up one the leadership, right? and just kind of the respect around Mlin Celibbrini’s name already. Uh even uh to Foley had a funny uh thing today about like um if he would never do the uh the grouse grind again because um you know which was the the run like there’s that mountain up there in Vancouver. Um asked uh Shank Pang had this asked the celebrity. He took it easy on him. He said Mlin left him which I think is absolutely hilarious. Uh Mlin’s like, “You’re holding me back, old man.” Um so, you know, I I do think like that is a a lot of praise and the first player on the ice today was one Mlin celebrating. I didn’t speak to the media. Got uh wasn’t feeling well. They sent him home. So, um nothing to worry about there. I like again, you know, it’s that back to school flu right now. Like my kids got it last week. Just knocked everybody out. Like it’s it’s that back to school time of year. Anyway, um but uh a lot of praise heaped on to Young Celebrini here very quickly um by a lot of people who were not part of the organization last year. So again, we’ll see. Was this them just trying to kind of, you know, stick up for a new teammate and kind of, you know, etc., etc., or maybe a sign of uh things to come. We will see. Other interesting quotes um Mario Ferraro spoke to the media today uh was asked about of course as he enters the last year of his contract um you know he said of course I want to win like Ferrari is always going to say like I want to be here in San Jose I want to win I want to help turn this thing turn this thing around but there have been no contract extension talks so which we know wer or with Mike Greer right he is going to keep all of his options open and I think um he probably has a number in mind, right? And if I recall correctly, I think uh it was like evolving hockey has it around like six years at like 5 million something around that where so we’ll just say like $30 million or whatever it would probably be the signing price for Ferrari and I think even Ferraro might even take a little bit of a hometown discount type of thing because uh you know I mean the guy this guy just had a baby he doesn’t want to move all his stuff. I totally understand that. Um, but like I’m sure there there’s pro like if they got into contract negotiations, I don’t think it would take very long uh for Ferraro to get signed. So again, Mike Greer, we know Mike Greer is going to like he the dude’s cold blooded and like he’s going to do what he think is right for the organization over the long hall. So we’ll see. Again, I wouldn’t if Ferraro does get signed, I think it might be a Tomas hurdle type of situation where he gets resigned like right before the trade deadline. That would be my guess. If Ferraro does get re ends up getting resigned, um Greer is going to keep all of his options open when it comes to to that. So, um and then some of uh also Cam Lun just uh with him. So, he of course got hurt at uh rookie faceoff. Um they’re just gonna say upper body injury, but as I always like to say, if it walks like a duck, if it talks like a duck, it’s probably a concussion. They expect him to be out here uh pretty, you know, for a little bit, but not a long-term thing. So, if you got hurt last weekend, you’re probably looking about a week to 10 days before he’s back. uh which will probably put you about middle of next week before we we see I would assume we we see uh Lund as well. So uh not worried about it, you know, unfortunately it’s it’s part of the the thing with with it. So um Greer did have another uh very interesting quote as well uh when he was asked about Mark Edward Vlic’s comments. So if you missed it, uh Vassic spoke how he kind of felt like uh he was misled or lied to, especially at the end of the season. Um, Greer said it wasn’t his um wasn’t his intent. He felt pretty good about how the conversation went. Uh, said Vastic is a class act. Um, but this from Curtis Bashulka. Quote, “It was just a decision I had to make and what I thought was in best interest of the organization, especially after watch Dickinson tear through the Memorial Cup playoffs and the OHL playoffs. We had to have a discussion here and see which path we wanted to go down. And unfortunately, that’s the decision we made. We felt like it was best for the organization. Dickinson’s not going anywhere, guys. Like, uh, yeah. Uh, which I don’t know if it’s ironic. I I guess it’s iron the like you know the last kind of defenseman to come in like a big-time defenseman the Sharks drafted of Vassic who came in you know as a 19year-old and just never left him getting replaced by Sam Dickinson who’s going to be a 19-year-old and might just never leave. Um you know it’s I guess it’s irony. Um but yeah very interesting there. So, uh, yeah, I don’t think Sam Dickinson’s going back to London, guys. Uh, like I think he’d have to be like brutal, brutal. Uh, and even then, I think Greer would still think twice about it. So, um, but yeah, I think otherwise, you know, it was it’s good to see the boys back on on the ice here. Uh, we’ve got some fun exciting uh, you know, couple days of practice here before on Sunday uh, when we have our first preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights. So, uh, I’m very intrigued. I assume Michael Mis is going to get run. Like, assume Misa is going to get run here in the play in the preseason, just like we saw last year with, um, Celebriny and with Smith. Like, those guys got a lot of run in the preseason. Even going back to Ekkan a couple years ago, like Ekkan got a lot of run in the preseason. I assume Misa is going to get a lot of run in the preseason, especially against a team like Vegas, which is very veteran team. We’ll see how Vegas kind of likes to handle with their preseason. I think they tend to skew a little bit uh younger with with some of their guys, but uh I I expect Misa to get a lot of run and play in most if not all the preseason games. So, um but yeah, we will So, that’s going to be it for us today. We’ll be back uh Sunday night with a reaction to the Sharks first preseason game of the season. Hockey is back, kids. We are back. So, uh, make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcasts. And of course, you can watch on, uh, uh, YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and on Tik Tok, Kawabanga, Hans Moleman. Uh, follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Uh, until Sunday night. Bye, friends.

  1. Smith would be a great center, but the sum of all the parts is obviously best if he is turned loose on the wing. My suspicion is Smith will be a hundred-point scorer someday from the wing. Just hopefully not until his next contract.

It’s useful to have a right-handed faceoff guy on the wing. In a lot of situations where the right-handed draw is a plus, the lefty center can try to cheat the first drop and probably get kicked out and then the righty can take the next drop. Thornton and Pavelski used to run that crap all day.

  2. He’ll get more opportunities later in the season I’m sure to play center for experimentation purposes but for line chemistry wise this might be the way to go. He’s gained weight this offseason to play bigger & maybe be more of a defensive prowess. Smitty is a great passer with good vision & puck control, but a little stiff. At the wing, he’ll produce a lot better and I see the vision since Misa will be on the main roster day 1 to be center on that 2nd line.

  3. Its great to have Smith on the wing. When Misa is waived out of the faceoff circle, Smith can take the draw. There are advantages. Smith could drop to 3rd Center during games. Can you imagine 3 top skilled lines? That will be hard to defend, even for Florida. The Sharks can roll all four lines if their prospects pan out.

  4. So Misa gets 2C to start. Great! Where the hell are all these towards gonna go?

    Smith-Mack-Skinner
    Eklund-Misa-Toff
    Kirashev-Wennberg-Graf
    Guadette-Dellandra-Grundstrom

    Reeves scratch

I think that’s the best combination with who we have contracted. So where do the young Fs slot in?

  5. Nice little episode JD! I like many others is glad Smith will stay on Celebrini's wing. However, I will not yet name Misa the 2C. It is far too early for me. Most likely Misa starts at 3C and as long as he can handle that he will stay at 3C.

If he excels, then he may move to 2C. I might be wrong but that is my thoughts.

As to the lines so far? None of it makes a difference right now. As you said it is nothing but testing how players react with each other when playing on the same line and giving prospects a chance to see what it is like to play alongside and against NHL players.

Love what I have heard so far and was glad GMMG pretty much confirmed what I have been harping on since his locker room clean out. There will be no fire sale or tanking for McKenna.

He wants to win as much as he can. He may move a couple players, but not much more than that. If a player like Klingberg plays well he will try and retain them with the only caveat being that if an offer comes along that is too good to refuse, he will make the move.

I support this. The 2026 draft is deep in the one area the Sharks pool needs depth, RD. If he can get another first or second round pick, GMMG may have enough ammo to snag two of those top 5 RDs in the 2026 draft.

Let the build begin!!!!! Woot woot!

  6. Yes they want him at wing but also a training camp at wing gives him time to develop those skills he has never developed since he has always played center. Very important for growth.

  7. Makes sense. If and when Misa moves up to the second line you’re going to want to be able to surround him with guys who are able to support him defensively. Pairing him with guys like Eklund and Toffoli can cover any mistakes but also benefit as finishers from his creativity. It was talked about a lot before the draft, but adding Misa just gives so much flexibility in the top six.
