[Music] Are you guys still feeling that W on a winning winning Monday? And honestly, after a blowout victory, there’s a lot of overreactions that we can talk about. I’m not going to get too crazy on this video, but there’s some things that you could possibly talk about where you could say, “All right, this might, and I mean might, make sense.” Welcome in to Patriots today by chat sports. I am your host Brett Alper. 42-13 win over the Carolina Panthers and the first one overreaction Monday. Question for you guys to start the show. What do you think the chances are that the Patriots make the playoffs? What do you think? Because the Steelers won and that’s a tough one and now they have the tiebreaker. But at two and two and the Ravens are going in to one and three. So now you have the advantage over them. What do you think the percent chance that the Patriots make the playoffs? Scale one to 10. One to 100% for me. 1% nope. 100%. This is a lock guarantee. Brett, make your bet. Put that in right now. First overreaction of the Patriots win. And I don’t think this is an overreaction at all. I think this is the truth. And the Patriots might have the best best special teams in the NFL. And this goes back all the way to the start of the season. In week two against the Miami Dolphins, Antonio Gibson runs back at kickoff. I mean, hell, even in preseason, Tvian Henderson runs back at kickoff. And in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, Marcus Jones set a record. This comes from Mike Reese, and this was during the game. Marcus Jones 167 yard or 167 punt return yards are the most by a Patriots player in franchise history. Breaks Mike Haynes’s old record of 156. That just shows how good Marcus Jones is from a standpoint on punt return. You could go back just how good he is. I mean, do you remember the Jets game from a couple years ago where it was absolutely nothing? Marcus Jones takes the punt return back for a touchdown. They are a threat every single time you kick the ball to him. And you give Marcus Jones the littlest of space, the littlest. He had barely any room to run. I thought he was going to fair catch it. And he takes the punt return for a touchdown. Then he gets another one and had one man to beat and got tackled by the punter after another 61 yarder. It is insane to see. And Brennan Skooler, an amazing player as a gunner. this special teams I think is truly one of the best in the NFL. Second overreaction. And I know people might think I’m crazy for this. People might think I’m absurd and insane, but Drake May is proving in his second year that he is the best quarterback of this 2024 draft class. Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels did make it to an NFC championship game, but he’s been a little bit questionable. I mean, coming into this season, he is hurt. He did miss the last two games for Washington and we could see that Washington did lose on Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons and they missed him. But Drake May week in and week out has proved himself that he is one of the best quarterbacks coming out of this draft class. Just in week four, 14 for 17. The completion percentage is perfect. I’m not complaining at all. There was two passes that hit the ground and I’m like, “All right, Drake. It’s it’s all right here.” than two touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, no interception. And I know it’s a little small for you guys, but this is what he has done in his last three games. 201 yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, 268 yards, two passing touchdown. He did throw an interception. And then 230 yards, two passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown. 75% completion percentage. most consecutive games he has done a 75% in his last three starts. And people are like, “Well, Brett, what does this mean? What does that mean?” Well, this is what it means. He’s a part of history. These are the only quarterbacks in the NFL to have done that. Tom Brady 07, Pton Manning in 2013, Aaron Rogers in 2011, Pton Manning in 2004, Curt Warner in ’01. That’s it. And you could see that stat right there. You won AP NFL MVP that season. Drake May is a part of a group with Tom Brady, Pton Manning, Aaron Rodgers. He is the real deal and we’re seeing him grow up right in front of our eyes. It is awesome to see and I think he’s proving himself that he is one of the, if not the best quarterback of this 2024 NFL draft class. We had a fun time on the watch party, man. Fun fun fun time. He proved it on Sunday. And uh the Patriots passing defense. I I know that you’re facing Bryce Young and I think he’s not I think he’s a bust, but you could see the difference in just the secondary with Christian Gonzalez being back in his first game. This was his first game back from not doing any training camp, any type of preseason football, and he was his old self. I know Tedaroa McMillan is a rookie and Tedoro McMillan is going to be one of the best wide receivers in football at some point in the NFL, but Gonzo locked him down and Bryce Young didn’t even look at him. Like he the stats, Carlos A. Lopez, he had the tweet and he gave all the stats up. 11 routes when Gonzo was on Tedaro McMillan, only three targets, two catches allowed, which one of them it was at the beginning of the game. He did cook Gonzo, but it was his first rep back and I’m like, “All right, whatever. That’s fine.” But since then, three tackles, 31 yards. He is one of the best corners in football, if not the best. Patrick Certan, Derek Stingley. We’ll see. We’ll see. But Gonzo is going to prove himself next week. He’s going to be on Khalil Shakir. He’s going to And pass coverage. It just looks drastically different. I I enjoy you. I like you, Alex Austin. I said it before, but um you’re not Christian Gonzalez. And you can see that teams aren’t going his way because they know how good he is. And your allp pro corner is back, man. And that is the biggest thing for the Patriots. And they’re only going to get better. Only going to get better. Gonzo is the top blank cornerback in the NFL. You fill in that blank for me. Top what CB in the NFL? And this is going to this is going to lose you games cuz it lost you a game last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. And if it keeps up, it’s going to happen again and again and again. And the Patriots, they still have a major penalty problem. They’re not disciplined. They have not been great when it comes to just playing hard-nosed prototypical football, fundamental football. In Sunday’s game against the Panthers, yeah, it was a blowout win. You had seven penalties for 54 yards. And I said it on the live stream, seven penalties. It’s not a lot of yardage, but it’s those ticky tack calls, the holding calls that bring you back, the illegal contacts, the pass interference, the face mask. It was Austin Hooper. He grabbed on the face mask and it was immediately 15 yards back. That is a big like the Patriots caught a break on that drive because then they ended up getting an illegal hands to the face, which is an automatic first down, which was great for them. But you cannot have those penalties. If you want to win games in the NFL, you are going to have to play better. You have to be more disciplined. And Mike Frabel has to get this team together. Next week, you’re playing arguably the best team in the NFL. The best team, your division rival. And if you show up and you have seven penalties for 54 yards, and Tayvon Henderson, I hope you’re good. I hope you’re good at pass blocking because you are a liability right now when it comes to pass protection. Got called for another holding call during Sunday’s game. There’s a reason why Raandre Stevenson got the start again. They trust him. And Henderson, he’s great. He scored his first touchdown, which is amazing to him. Great in the pass catching game. You have to get better at pass protection and not committing those type of penalties. Big game next week, gigantic. If the Patriots win, the overreaction video next Monday is going to be absurd.
