The Full Circle moment….
In 1914 The Miracle Braves made up a 15 game deficit and went on to win the WS.

In last place on July 4th of that year, they were also 15 games behind the NL leading New York Giants. They would end the season 10.5 Games ahead of the Giants and snag the NL Pennant. They also went on to sweep the Philadelphia Athletics in a 4 game series. They were then dubbed "The Miracle Braves"

The Cleveland team, or more affectionately known as the "Naps" , were a last place team in the AL. In 1914 they held a 51-102 record. Nap would hit for .258/.313/.305 slash during the putrid season. At the conclusion, the player/manager moved on from Cleveland. His contract was purchased on Jan 5th 1915 by the Philadelphia Athletics.

Faced with their star 2B and Managers departure, the team ownership and writers were looking for a new name.

When the team was renamed in 1915, there was a clear effort to capitalize on the popularity of the "Miracle Braves" and the success of a team with a "Native American" name. While the team and some newspapers later tried to retroactively link the name to Louis Sockalexis, a Native American player who played for a previous Cleveland team (Spiders), historical sources show that this was likely a post-hoc justification rather than the primary reason for the name choice. The initial motivation was more about mimicking the marketing success of the Boston Braves.

This is where the full circle moment comes in. The 2025 Cleveland Guardians just made up a bigger deficit than the team that they were named after. José is our Nap Lajoie.

Let's make a run like the 1914 Boston Braves!

  1. Sidebar: If the Astros hadn’t collapsed, we’d be talking about an even bigger collapse by the Tigers.

  2. On a kind of side note of this, Sarah Langs is truly the best and so good for baseball. I hope she’s comfortable and will enjoy this postseason. Fuck that disease man
