‘The Jets beat the Jets’ – Herm Edwards says turnovers led the Dolphins to MNF win | SportsCenter

Can I call him Uncle Herm or is that just a youbody can? Okay, so Uncle Herm is here. Look, in your coaching days, you’ve been in the position that Mike McDaniel is now in where you’ve lost key players or star players. The Dolphins got a a very important win tonight, their first one of the season, but they also have the loss of Tyreek Hill. So, if you are McDaniel, what is your message? What are you saying in the locker room that somebody’s going to have to pick up the slack and we’re going to have to do this for Tyreek? Uh, you know, we got to dedicate this to Tyreek now. And and I think the players understand that he he was a focal point of this offense tonight. And when they’re rolling, this is what the Miami Dolphins looked like. This explosive offense. We hadn’t seen this in a while. And tonight it looked like, oh boy, they’re rolling again, right? And you get your star player hurt. Now, now Waller all of a sudden became a guy. Waller’s going to have to be used anymore. Wadd is still there. A chain is still there. So they have guys. You just don’t want to waste this moment of this guy going off on the cart. It hasn’t hit him yet. He’s in shock. Uh but now he’s lost for the season. So you got to you got to gain your momentum now. If you’re the team, you have to have a mentality that we’re not going to get him back. And if you do, by the grace of whatever, that’s gravy, right? Uh all right, so that’s the big news from the game. Let’s take you back to show you how the entire thing played out with the Dolphins getting that first win of the season. First quarter, it’s a three nothing Miami lead. Jets got a second and goal from the six. And Rayan Allen right up the middle and then a fumble. Again, you’re just shooting yourself in the foot on a consistent basis. That That’s a great play. But here again, that was really the point of if they score that, the Jets probably win this game. So So momentum, yeah, momentum means everything. The entire complexion of the game changed cuz there’s Darren Waller, his first touchdown since October of 2023. Hell of a catch, by the way. As the Dolphins responded then here, oh boy, pressure on Justin Fields. He can’t hold on to the ball. Another turnover. First time since week two of 2021 they’ve turned the ball over on the first two drives of the game. That’s not a formula for success. Opening kickoff of the third. Isaiah Williams looked like his nice little return and then all of a sudden the ball is out. Third fumble forced by Miami in this game. And oh yeah, they had penalties as well for the Jets. Boy, but Miami taking advantage of those opportunities to get their first win of the season. get some play action. Tua finds Waller again. Waller now has more receiving touchdowns on Monday than he did in 12 games with the Giants. Two versus one. Again, Dolphins win it 2721, their first win of the season. They avoid that 0 and4 start. So, let’s just take this message and swap it because we talked about what McDaniel is saying. If you are Aaron Glenn and your team is now still looking for its first win of the season after all of the penalties and all of the turnovers, what are you saying? Well, there’s a couple ways you look at this. First, you visit with your coaching staff and you tell them this. We’re either coaching that mess or we’re allowing it to happen as a staff. We’re coaching the mess that we watch tonight. And you can say we’re not, but you know what we’re doing? Then we’re allowing it to happen. So, we got to fix it. We have to fix this right now because the Jets don’t play the Jets. And tonight, the Jets beat the Jets. They turned the ball over. We did three times. They had what 13 fouls. And at the end, they’re still in this game trying to win. Yeah. And you went on the road. And so it’s not like they’re not competing, but you can’t play that way. And Aaron said it, and Aaron’s a professional football player. Uh, now he’s a head coach. He’s got to look his staff in the face and say, “Hey man, okay, we’re not coaching it, but we’re allowing it to happen.” Okay. So then it sounds like a stupid question or like a simple fix, but like how do you actually fix it? You’re hopeful of this. You take this film and you break it down into parts. would you show your football team? You just show them the turnovers and you show them the fouls and you go, “Guys, this this this has nothing to do with anything. This is just us. The Jets don’t play the Jets. The Jets are playing against the Jets right now. We can’t do that.” And Aaron’s smart. And the players will see that. They’ll go, “We’re just we beating oursel.” Correct. It’s not what Miami did. It’s what you did to yourself. 100%. You have accountability. We were talking to to Dan Orloski and Lou Riddick earlier and they mentioned the fact that you know Aaron Glenn obviously came from Detroit and he was there in that first season when they were terrible and got off to another start that so he at least from a coaching standpoint he understands what that process could be but to get it done in a different environment to get it done in New York is way harder all due respect to get it done in Detroit because you you don’t just need a head coach and you’ve got to have the players that buy into it as well her that process you don’t always control. No. And and and this is where, you know, we’re a long way away from here because there’s a lot of games to be played, but there’s a certain mentality you have to play and draft players and acquire players to play in New York. It’s different and I know that I coached there and and you know, people told me the same thing. I said, I played in Philly. I can I’m okay. York, Philly Philly is strong as Philly. New York’s a different It’s just different, right? And and people told me that I said, “And then you figure it out, right?” And Aaron knows it. He played there. He understands the mentality of it all. And he’s got a team that will compete. He has a team that plays for him. But they got to play smarter football. This was just hard to watch. Every time it seemed like they were getting closer than they did something to theirel. That’s like I said this earlier. If you are a Jets fan, what are you feeling good about? Where where are you finding that hope? Where are you finding? And also when you look at the schedule and what they have coming up, where are you finding the hope there? It’s it’s it’s it’s hard, but you got to win a game. You just need to win one game and all of a sudden you just feel a lot better. You want the players to feel a game. You want the coaching staff to feel a game. You know, you you want them to win a game so they know what that feels like because when you’re 0 and4, you know what that feels like every week. Yeah. And no one wants to go run a third week and get their head beat in either like or feel embarrassed. Correct. Right. If if you for a while, then you start to look at yourself differently. I tell you what, you know, 0 and4 is a And we heard what Cam Warren said in Tennessee. They owe and four. He’s Heat. Heat. [Music] [Applause] [Music]
