Giants fire manager Bob Melvin after 2 seasons | Instant Reaction & Analysis

the NFL on CBS and Paramount+. We’ve got some breaking news out of baseball, where the San Francisco Giants have fired Bob Melvin after two seasons. He was let go after the Giants finished 81 and 81 this season, one game better than Melvin’s first year with the club. Over his two plus decades as a big league skipper. He’s won three manager of the year awards, two with the A’s in the American League and one with the Diamondbacks in the NL. Let’s bring in our Matt Schneider to talk about this breaking news. Any of this come as a surprise to you? Schneider not a huge shock because we started to hear whispers the last week or so that Melvin’s probably going to be out in terms of the big picture. It is kind of surprising because he was widely considered one of the best managers in baseball during his time with the A’s, to the point that I remember when the Padres hired him, it was viewed as like a major coup for the Padres to go and pull him away from the A’s. And then the Padres went to the NLCS in his first year as manager. Then second year, he fell out of favor. Goes to San Francisco. He has two mediocre seasons, but by no means were they terrible, and they were actually overachieving for quite a while this season. And then they climbed back into the playoff race. I think that you could have totally justified saying, there’s no way that this is Bob Melvin’s fault, that the Giants missed the playoffs. They didn’t have good enough personnel. Almost all of us predicted them to finish fourth heading into the season, and they finished third, a game ahead of the Diamondbacks. Basically, I wouldn’t have thought that they were going to be any better than this, but Buster Posey said that they needed a new voice in the clubhouse, and he’s in charge now. He took over late last year, so he’s not the guy that hired Bob Melvin. Maybe there’s a little something there in Posey wants to bring in his own guy in. Just to follow up on that, you mentioned Buster Posey, obviously as a player with those three World Series titles, his first full year as president of baseball operations, what direction do you think he will go? Given what we’ve seen with Buster Posey, they swung for the fences with that Rafael Devers trade. What do we think in San Francisco does here? My hunch is they want to go younger and they want to grab somebody like an up and coming bench coach, something like that. Maybe in his late 30s, maybe in his 40s. There will be discussion about Bruce Bochy, though. He’s in he was in his final year of his contract with the Rangers. He won the World Series with the Rangers. He was Posey’s manager all those years. With the Giants, winning three World Series championships. Most of Giants fans did not want to go under the previous administration there in San Francisco, which kind of ran away. I think Bochy might just retire, but there will be a little bit of a conversation there. And then lastly here, the Giants as presently constructed here, going into an off season, going up against the likes of the Dodgers and the Padres, is certainly something Giants fans have not liked to see in terms of rivalries in that division, that they’ve been overtaken with that particular Petco versus Chavez Ravine. What are you thinking about the Giants and some of the needs that they have to address here? Well, they’ll need to get better at player development moving forward. First of all, so they don’t have to keep trying to land all these huge free agents. They’ve been in on so many guys. We’ve seen Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa all in free agency and they just haven’t been able to land guys. They need to get better at player development. But something that was working down the stretch once Willy Adames finally started to hit, Rafael Devers got hot. Matt Chapman came back from injury when those three were hitting. That’s when the Giants made a run and climbed back into the playoff race. Those three could be the offensive backbone. They need to go out and get some pitching to support Logan Webb. Robbie Ray had a very good season there. It’s going to be interesting to see where they go, but they need to be a little bit less. On trying to land all these big free agents and be a little bit better at developing their own guys, which has been tough in San Francisco, whether they were good or not. Attracting those slugging free agents is certainly been tough. Adam, by the way, hitting 30 home runs, first 30 homer Giants since Barry Bonds in 2004. If you can believe it. Tonight, he certainly appreciate it. Take a look at the Wild Card Series matchups again. Dodgers and Padres are on this list. San Francisco wants to get there. We’ll hit a break when we come back. 1. Feel bad for the guy. He has been a really good manager over the years. The only thing he hasn't done is win in the post-season. Hope he gets another shot somewhere else.

  2. This doesn’t make sense….

Last year they went 79-83 and this year went 81-81.

Yes I know winning two more games and finishing at .500 and still missing the playoffs isn’t really ideal but come on. I don’t think two seasons is enough to get a feel for a team.

3? Sure. But I never really agreed with letting a coach / manager of a team go after one or two seasons. IMO that’s not enough time to get a feel.

I know this is besides the point but it’s like Jerod Mayo last year. You’re telling me the Patriots organization thought they’d contend in one year following BB’s departure?! Seriously?!

  3. Every move from the Giants is horrendous. The players choked this year and they blame it on Melvin. You watch…Melvin will go on to have great success like Bochy. I think the story is get over yourself. You had a great run for the 3 trophies (and had a great group of players)…..but its really really hard to win again. Missing out on star players and just firing your coaches isn't going to solve the puzzle. This is really disappointing.
