HOUSTON ASTROS VS LOS ANGELES ANGELS ⚾ MLB REGULAR SEASON SEP 27, 2025
out his first time up pinch hitting cuts and misses strike one. The one thing you can’t do with him is miss middle in. He is some kind of big and strong. 64 270. Neo1 down low. Missed with a split. One and one. Ninth inning. Two down. Nobody on. Two-2 ball game. Cleveland hasn’t scored since the two-run homer in the first by Jonathan Rodriguez. The pitch swung and grouted foul outside of first. Texas got an RBI double from Josh Young in the first and a Dol Garcia tied it with a solo homer to left center in the fourth. Passity crowd back on their feet. They’ve been in a playoff mode this entire home stand. The one two slang and then this high heat took care of him. Cleveland’s got a chance to walk it off and punch their ticket to the postseason. Bottom of the ninth coming. [Music] The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros let the diamond shine. I’m going to go check out food truck row. So, what did you guys get today? Philly cheese steak. Philly cheese steak. Both of you got the same thing. Are they that good? Oh, yeah. Got a hot dog and some fries. Just kind of basic chicken bacon sandwich. Philly cheese steak. Okay. And some crinkle cut fries. Okay. Where are you guys from? We’re from Dallas. Dallas. That’s what’s fun about baseball. It brings different regions together. Not just the ball and glove and bat, but what we’re eating. [Music] Let’s go. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. Hey [Applause] control. for the ninth inning. It’s a two- two ball game. And here’s another guy that’s been invincible. Robert Garcia, hardth throwing lefty. How about this guy? In his last 16 games, he’s given up one run. He is 3 and 0 with a 0.53 earned run average. Fast ball slider change up. Anhel Martinez will add right-handed. That’s his better side. He takes the strike from Garcia. Sean Armstrong a scoreless inning. Jacob Webb. An inning and two/3 of scoreless relief and a fine start by Jacob Lance. Two innings in five and a third. Martinez 0 for three. The pitch strike two painted the outside corner mid90s. Jose Ramirez waits on deck. Two-2 ball game. Cleveland’s had seven walk-off wins this year here at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario. Only one of those was a walk-off homer. That was back in April. Now the O2 a swing and a chopper foul third base side. Cleveland trying to win its 13th division title since these divisions came into play. 1995 the first time we had a division winner. Cleveland’s won it 12 times. Minnesota nine. The O2 pitch swing and a ground ball wide of third to his left. Young gloves throws. Got him. That’ll bring up Jos Ramirez. One for three with a single. You look at what the Cleveland Guardians have done. Whether it’s the Guardians or the Indians since 1995, [Applause] they’ve been in postseason 14 different times. A win. They’re back in. Ramirez bats right-handed the pitch and a back door breaking ball for strike one. Everybody on their feet. 36,000 at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario. Outfield deep, spread out. 2-2 in the ninth. Garcia to Ramirez. Swing and a foul back. Change up at 91 miles per hour. And the change up was away. Boy, that’s a great pitch. Nothing to the count on Ramirez. 30 homers, 34 doubles. Now the O2 high and wide. He really tried to put a little extra on it. One and two the count. Garcia almost looked like he may have tweaked something. Almost like he stumbled or landed funny, but looks like he’s okay now. The one-two pitch. Swang and a foul tip. That was mono. 96 mph. Well, this is game number 161. And for the 161st game, Cleveland counting on Jose to deliver. He seldom disappoints. The pitch down low, kicks to the back stop. Two balls, two strikes. What Ramirez has done in this offensively challenged lineup is immeasurable. Garcia from the set. Here it comes. Checked on a pitch outside. He didn’t go. Threw him another change up and the string is out on Ramirez. Garcia is ready. Payoff pitch. Swing and a foul into the Cleveland third base dugout. Got the slider in on the hands. We’ll do it again at three and two. Two two ball game in the ninth. The set, the payoff pitch, a swing and a pop foul. This will reach the seats first base side. Cleveland is one run away from accomplishing the impossible. No team in the history of this game has ever been 11 games out in September and played in October. Again, the 3-2 pitch swang and a foul back and pitch number 10 is moments away. [Applause] Garcia the set, the payoff swing and a little dribbler. Third base side foul. He’s seen everything. Fast balls, sliders, changeups. Jose Ramirez every year whenever that season ends he gives himself 10 days to rest recuperate in his home in the DR then he’s back hitting and back sending video to the Cleveland hitting coaches 10 days the 3-2 pitch swing and a popup right side of the infield Solano and shallow right second baseman grabs it and 11 pitch at bat, one by Robert Garcia. Two down now. Jonathan Rodriguez. Can he bookend it? He hit a two-run home run to right center in the first. His second home run with Cleveland this year. Now he bats in the ninth with two outs and nobody on. This guy has had predigious power in the miners, averaging 28 homers a year. Conference is going to be broken up by home plate umpire John Lipka. Jonathan Rodriguez went back to Columbus. Steven Boat said, “Look, you’ve got to get shorter to the ball. You’ve got to shorten your stride. You can’t have as long a swing. You’re big. You’re strong. You’re powerful. He’s made those adjustments. Now trying to make it capitalize again here. The pitch outside ball one tonight. The two-run homer to right center. A single to right and a bounce out. Two down, nobody on. Ninth inning, two-2 ball game. The set, the one pitch outside 2 and 0. Well, the Cardinals sin for any relief pitcher in the ninth for extra innings. Do not get beat by a poleside home run. Garcia keeping the ball away. The pitch ball outside 3 and 0. Left-handed hitting Kyle Mansardo on deck. Well, you got to believe that this is in a zone of his liking. Jonathan Rodriguez is swinging [Applause] now. The 3 0 swing and a foul upstairs. Change up and Rodriguez was aggressive. That’s what you love to see. Three balls and a strike. Two-2 ball game. Base is empty. Two down in the ninth again. The outfield straight away and deep. Robert Garcia. The 3-1 pitch. Checked on a pitch. Low. Ball four. Boy, he has swung the bat well here tonight. That’s a heck of an at bat there. He didn’t chase. Kyle Manardo will come to the plate now. We’ll get a pinch runner for Jonathan Rodriguez. That’ll be PD Halpin. Then he’ll stay in the game and play in the outfield. Halpin can really run. And again, the way Texas cannot throw out runners. Let’s see if Pety Hen is trying to get his first major league steal. Left on left as the batter is Kyle Manardo. Two-2 tie in the ninth. Two down. Not much of a lead. He draws the throw and it’s almost thrown away. Tles reached down and saved an errant throw from putting PD helping at least at second base. First base coach Sandy Alamar, as good a coach as there is in the game, goes over to say something to help him. [Applause] Now the set in the pitch, swung on, lifted in the air, shallow left. Freeman coming hard. He spacings being waved home. Now he puts the brakes on. Goes back to third wisely. Rugio waved him home then put up the stop sign. Freeman tried to make a diving catch and the ball almost skipped by him again and he got a glove on it. Kept it in front of him or the game would have been over. [Applause] So a bloop single to left by Kyle Manardo and helping now at third. Manardo at first. Gabrielle Arius the manor and Mike Maddox the pitching coach going to the mound now. Cody Freeman made a heck of an effort. Boy, he had to come in a long way. Just couldn’t get there. And if he doesn’t, as he goes into a half dive, half slide, deflect that ball and keep it in front of him, if it gets by him, the game is over. Cleveland’s in the playoffs. as it is. Helping at third, Manzardo at first. Two down. Ninth inning, ball game tied. 22. Gabrielle Larius, the batter, one for three with a triple. My goodness. [Applause] And Arius is being intentionally walked with a left-handed hitting CJ Cayas, another rookie coming up. So, first base wasn’t open, but second base was and manager Bruce Bochi elects to walk Gabrielle Aras to set up a left on left matchup. Now, of course, Garcia’s got to throw strikes. The rookie CJ Cayas lefty lefty encounter the pitch outside corner strike. Cayas in just his 43rd major league game trying to send this place into a frenzy. Bases loaded, two down in the ninth. Two- two game. The pitch and hit him. Ball game playoffs again. and Cleveland for the eighth time in the last 13 years. You will have another October to remember. [Applause] TJ Capus drilled by the pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in the winning run. And Cleveland has stunned Texas in the bottom of the ninth inning, 3-2. And the Guardians become the sixth and final American League playoff team in two years in a row. Steven Vote and this coaching staff have taken Cleveland to October baseball. And it is done in the most unlikely manner. Two outs, nobody on. A walk, a bloop single, an intentional walk, and a hit by pitch. Is that Cleveland Guardians baseball in a nutshell? And at this point, there are no beauty points. You get into the playoffs any way you can. And Cleveland gets its eighth walk-off win in the most unlikeliest fashion. A bases loaded hit by pitch. And the Guardians have joined the Detroit Tigers. Both punching their tickets to the postseason here on this Saturday afternoon and now Saturday night. And with a win, Cleveland is still in first place in the American League’s Central Division. [Applause] And that goes into tomorrow’s game. Cleveland and Detroit with the same record. Cleveland though with a tiebreaker. And the only thing we don’t know now is who’s going to win the Central and who would be that Central Division Champions Wildcard opponent. If Cleveland wins tomorrow and if Detroit beats Boston tomorrow, then Cleveland will host Boston next week. If Cleveland wins tomorrow and Detroit loses, then Cleveland will host on that pitch, that slider. Again, he’s going to have that pitch as he gets deeper into his career for Dana where he’s going to have that slider to make sure it’s out of the strike zone. It had a little more depth to it. Play with two strikes. But having those veteran going back to what you were talking about patio as a young player my first year we made the play second year we win the World Series. I was just 22 years old we win the World Series and I remember this that’s right 302 on base percentage three homers nine driven in pitch on the way that is way inside ball one. The Astros came into today with a shot, but they needed either the Guardians or the Tigers to lose today, and neither of those things happened. 10 swinging a miss at a high one, and it’s one and one. Boy, it was a tough season healthwise for the Astros. And to be in this position second to last day of the season really a tribute to a lot of people. At one point the Astros had as many as 18 players on the IIL. One is over for a strike at the knees. One and two. Had as many as eight starting pitchers on the injured list. Yeah. Really had to dip into their depth. What’ Yon play 50 games? Yeah, that’s that was a problem. had already been ruled out of this series. Pitch on the way. That’s down two and two. Alvarez will finish with 48 games played in 2025. No score. Top of the second. Dana the two- two. And Cole hits it well. It hits it deep to center. Toddosio is back on the warning track at the wall. He leaves and it’s gone. Two-run shot for Zack Cole. And the Astros lead it two to nothing. Cole’s fourth. [Applause] He’s a strong kid. Zack Cole the other way this time for Zack Cole. Left center field. 398 ft. The distance on that homer. It’s 396 the straightaway center and hit to the left of that barker. Another Astros home run. And as the official home run sponsor of the Houston Astros, Philip 66 is here to bring the go to every big hit, every clutch play, and every fan in the stands. Pitch to Sanchez is low for a ball. Keep swinging for the fences, Astros, because with Philip 66, you bring the energy and we bring the go. Is Sanchez hitting 235 303 on base percentage. 13 homers, 46 driven in. Here’s the 10 swinging a miss. Way out ahead of that change up. I guess it’s officially time to start thinking about next year and Zack Cole is certainly making a case to be on this roster. You’re not kidding. And the fact that he’s a left-handed bat bodess very well for him. And we’ll see obviously what happens with the Astros this off season, but one of the issues the Astros had offensively was their der of left-handed hitters. 1-1. That’s down two and one. That’s a big reason why the Astros traded for the man in the box now, Sanchez. Yeah. But yeah, there’s a lot to be excited about with Cole. We saw We’ve seen the throwing arm. Had a outfield assist last night. We’ve seen the power. 2-1 fouled back to the screen and it’s two and two to Sanchez. He’s called up for the Astros during that last road trip when they were in Atlanta in the very first pitch he saw he hit for a home run. And it’s exactly why they called him up just to inject a little bit of that youth. Yeah. Provide a spark. Two-2 that missed inside. And it’s three and two now to Sanchez. Astros with a two nothing lead in the top of the second. There’s going to be a lot of shuffling on the roster though once everybody gets healthy again. 3-2 swing and a miss way out in front of that change up. Sanchez strikes out the first for Dana and they’re a two away. Astros did make some roster moves before the game today. Jake Meyers got scratched from the game yesterday. That right calf was bothering him again. The same calf that put him on the IIL for a couple of months. And Meyers went back on the IIL today with right calf soreness. First pitch to Mauricio Duban and that’s fouled right at the plate. Strike one. Bryce Matthews recalled from Sugarland to take Meyer’s place. Keep in mind the Astros still without Jeremy Pñena has been dealing with that left oblique soreness. He hasn’t played since Saturday and one would think that he’s probably not playing tomorrow now either with the Astros eliminated. Owana Duban check swing bounce foul behind home. Also the Astros activated Lance McCuller’s Jr. off the IIL today. McCullers had missed the last couple of weeks with hand soreness. his third IIL stint of the season and Nick Hernandez was designated for assignment. 02 to Duban. Can’t hold up on the pitch in the dirt. Duban strikes out on three pitches and the side is retired. Back-to-back strikeouts for Kade and Dana, but not before Zack Cole got him for a two-run homer. And after one and a half in Anaheim, Astros 2, Angels nothing. Now this from your local station. A lot of life can happen between sips of Dani. You know the life moments big and small that are worth getting thirsty for. Like organizing a family. Sometimes your calling doesn’t shout, it hones. Like a lullabi floating through a warm night in Sed before he could walk. El Nino had already taken his first step toward greatness. For Fernando Tatis Jr. baseball wasn’t just in the house because papa was a protoo. It hung over his cradle like a promise. [Applause] and nino Japanese swing. Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] some overnight oats right before the game. My teammates look at me like, “What are you doing?” My mom’s cooking probably. She’s making some good uh she’s got a tuna fish casserole that’s pretty good. I went five for five. I need to eat the same thing. Last time Saturday I eata with eggs and then next day I got to eat with eggs. So my mom make it for me and then my mom is with me. Everything’s good. I save a lot of money. I’m going. [Applause] Two nothing Astros lead the Angels. Bottom of the second at Anaheim. Christian Moore stands in and AJ Blue Ball delivers one high for ball one. Moore right-handed hitting second baseman batting 206 291 on base percentage, seven homers, 16 runs batted in. Blue Ball walked two in the first. The 10 was high. Two balls and no strikes. A little erratic with the release point in the early going. Haven’t seen that from Blue Ball much. Yeah, 17 of his 27 pitches have been balls. Here’s the 200. That’s down. And it’s three balls and no strikes now to Moore. Started last inning with a three- 0 count. The kick and the pitch. And that’s high four pitch walk. Third walk issued by Blue Ball. And Moore is aboard to lead off here in the home second. The Astros are hosting auditions for the 2026 Coca-Cola Shooting Stars. Submit your virtual audition or learn more by going to astros.com/ auditions. And those ladies do a fantastic job. Here is Oswald PZA getting to start at first base today. Infield shades him to pull. Pitch on the way that is off the plate away for a ball. Nolan Sha Noel not in there tonight. PZA starting at first instead batting 166. 223 on base percentage, five homers, 20 RBI’s in 105 games between the Angels and Yankees. 10. That is a bit high and inside 2 and 0. PZA native of Venezuela was traded at the deadline by the Yankees to the Angels for a minor league outfielder. Here’s a 200 inside. PZA spins out of the way and Blue Ball has yet to throw a strike this inning. It’s important to know how you can correct things. Make an adjustment when you lose sight of the home plate. Seemed to with the change up a couple of times. Astros lead two nothing. 3 0 and that’s right in there for a strike. came with a fast ball at 92. Moore held on at first by Walker. Two for two, stealing bases this year. There goes Moore. The 3-1. That’s a strike. Throw down to second. Not nearly in time. Moore in with a head first slide. Well ahead of the tag by Altuve. And Christian Moore with his third steel. Well, the Astros certainly got better at holding runners on second half of the season, but they could still get better. Something I’m sure that they’re going to focus on in spring training next year. Work on some slide steps, holding the ball a little bit longer. 3-2 to PZA in tight. Ball four. So, back-to-back walks by Blue now. Four walks and nobody out here in the second. I think the phone rang in the the bullpit. See some guys moving around pretty quickly now. Nobody’s taken off their jacket yet. Diaz out to the mound along with Koreah trying to get Blue on track as Denzer Guzman will stand in. Guzman right-handed hitting shortstop batting 211 games. 222 on base percentage, two homers, three runs batted in. Guzman just 21 years old. His contract selected a couple of weeks ago after Zach Neto went on the IIL. Neto out with a a hand injury. Pitch on the way and that’s popped up off the hands up the first baseline. Blue Ball’s over. So is Walker and Blue Ball makes the catch in foul territory. So Blue Ball taking charge there. Well, he saw what happened on the first day of this road trip where a ball landed on the infield with Christian Javier on the mound. He wasn’t going to let that happen, so he took charge himself. Yeah, Walker probably could have made the play as well, but Blue Ball able to secure it. So, a big first out. Still runners at first and second for Bryce Teodosio. Number nine hitter, center fielder. Bats right-handed. First pitch. He squares, pulls it back, takes a strike. Nothing at one. All Kareaho was back. Yeah. Dodosio hitting 211. 252 on base percentage. A home run. Seven driven in two nothing Astros. Bottom of the second turn towards second base and scampering back is Moore. Now this batter is hard to walk. Only four walks for Todd Dosio and 45 strikeouts. 01 and that misses outside and low. A ball into strike in jail de los Santos up in the Astros bullpen. Blow ball at 38 pitches. 1-1 swinging a miss went after a high fast ball and it’s one and two. Guardians walking off the Rangers three-2 in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off hit by pitch of CJ Cayas putting the Guardians in the field and eliminating the Astros. The one-two is outside two balls and two strikes. Guardians are the first team to be 11 back in September and make the postseason. Wow. 2-2. That’s outside. They were as many as 15 and a half games. That’s right. Behind the Tigers this season. 11 back in September. Robert. Yeah. You just don’t see that happen. And apparently we hadn’t before. And the Guardians could still win the division. They’re tied with the Tigers going into tomorrow and have the tiebreaker. Who could have known that? That Cleveland sweep into Houston would have such huge ramifications, right? Yeah. And they were limping into that series. The Guardians 3-2 had foul over the screen. Guardians had lost 10 in a row. Astros were coming off their big weekend at Dodgers Stadium. Mhm. Yeah, that was happening. Yeah, that was so decisive in the end. 3-2 swing and a foul tip held on to by Diaz on a high fast. Teodosio strikes out the first for blue ball and they’re a two away. I wouldn’t be surprised if once all is said and done that both the Astros and Guardians look back to that series in Houston between them in July as the turning point in their respective seasons. Remember the Astros were 20 games over 500 after sweeping the Dodgers and they had a a sevengame lead in the AL West in early July. First pitch to Renhifo way inside as Renhifo bends out of the way. He lined out to center his first time up. [Applause] And you know that Guardians team, the big knock on them has been their lack of offense. But yeah, it seems like lately they’ve been able to get the the big hit when they’ve needed it or in the case of tonight’s game, the big hit by pitch when they needed it. And they’ve been pitching lights out. The 10 that’s hit a mile high. Playable for Diaz. Sheds the mask, moves toward the back stop, now back toward the home plate dirt area to make the catch to retire the sides. So, Blue Ball walks the first two, but gets out of it with no damage. And we’re through two in Anaheim. Astros 2 Angels nothing. [Music] The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. [Music] And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros of the diamond shine. Are you ready? [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Applause] looked to be late but apparently just did get treml. Tremal pointing to the dugout saying, “Hey, take a look at that.” watching live. I thought Dana was late there. They’re not going to look at it. And the Astros will not challenge. That’s a classic case of a pitcher watching the fielder make the play instead of looking at the bag. And he got his feet crossed up and almost didn’t get to the bag on time. Yeah, he got him but barely. And like you said, Steve, shouldn’t have been that close. Nope. So, one out, nobody on for Bryce Matthews. struck out looking his first time up. Pitch on the way. That’s over for a strike after the Astros were eliminated with the Guardians walk-off win a little earlier. Altuve, Paredus, and Koreah all came out of the game. Matthews coming in for Altuve. 01 swinging a miss. High fast ball. Nothing at two. You know, you mentioned Blue Ball, how good he is out of the bullpin, and we know he can start. I’d imagine he’ll come to spring training as a starter, and the the Astros will adjust if need be. Yeah. At least to stretch him out enough. Exactly. 02 ground ball softly hit left side to his right. It’s the shortstop fielding at Guzman. He throws to first in time and they’re a two away. Angels getting a look at a pretty exciting shortstop here with Zach Neto out. Guzman 21 years old looks pretty flashy. And Joe Delos Santos continues to warm for the Astros. So it looks like he’ll be on for the bottom of the fifth. Here’s Katini grounded out in the third. Pinch inning for Paradis staying in the game in the DH spot. First pitch and that’s fouled over the screen. Strike one. Here’s a couple of guys I wouldn’t expect to see pitched today or tomorrow. Guys like Abrau, Brian King, some guys that have thrown a ton of innings this year, maybe even Oak. Yeah, Abrau King and Oak careerh highs. I mean, King only in his second season and he didn’t come up until the latter part of the year. 01 that’s inside one and one. get a chance to see Lance McCullers, see JP France perhaps. Yeah, France has only pitched once since rejoining the big league club. Yeah, 1-1 swing and a miss. Way out ahead of the change up. I think another interesting thing to watch when you think ahead to 2026, Lance McCuller’s Jr., he’s got one more year left on his deal. He’s dealt with a lot of injuries including this season. One-two. Did he go around on the pitch down and away? He did says the third base umpire Jansen Viscanti. Keratini strikes out and the side is retired. Five strikeouts for Kade and Dana as he has a one, two, three inning. And we’re through four and a half in Anaheim. Astros five, Angels nothing. [Music] The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. [Music] And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros of the diamond shine. Heat. Heat. I remember the first series I had, the first home run I hit was a grand slam against Seattle, which was the team that I had played for the the year before as as we know Cleveland can get a little little cold so I would wear the dark blue long sleeves and for some reason this jersey I always like my jersey a little longer reasons for it for a little padding so when I would slide I wouldn’t get all patched up and and roughed up before book your tour today at astros.com/ours 5 nothing Astros leading the Angels as we start the home fifth new pitcher for the Astros their second of the night is right-hander Angel de los Santos. 4.43 RA in 64 games. 65 innings, 61 hits, 24 walks and 60 strikeouts. Dinser Guzman leads off first pitch and that’s over four strike. Guzman fouled out his first time up. Astros getting Deos Santos after the Braves cut him loose in early August. the 01 and that’s outside for a ball de los Santos a 4.22 2-2 erra in 21 games with the Astros. One-1 swinging a miss. One and two. It’s It’s funny sometimes the way seasons work and what patterns seem to occur over the course of a season. You you think about early in the year the story was all the the starting pitching injuries that the Astros incurred. One two swinging a miss got one by him upstairs. Goosebond strikes out and there’s one away but then in the last part of the year the last couple of months it was a bunch of bullpin injuries. Well, they go hand in hand, Robert. Josh her Bennett Souza. Some some significant hits taken by the Astros bullpin last couple of months. Here’s Bryce Teodosio. First pitch and a swing and a miss at a high fast ball. Teodosio struck out swinging on a high fast ball his first time up. But yeah, you’re right, Steve. you know, you wind up using the bullpen a little more. You don’t have the starters going as deep in the game. That’s it, man. It’s so hard to cover 12 outs every game. Pitch is high. One and one. I think that’s one thing that some of the good teams are looking for is two or three maybe four pitchers to get them more innings out of the rotation. One-1 grounded foul off to the left and it’s one and two. That’s where the Astros have been at their best, right? We’ll have to find out when we talk to Dana tomorrow. You know, spit to Eric Getty. Speaking of of starting pitching depth out the last couple of weeks, we’ll have to find out how he’s doing, what it looks like for him to start 2026. Swinging a miss at a high fast ball, Toddosio strikes out for the second time tonight. Back-to-back punch outs for De Los Santos. And there are two away. Let’s boss 10 seconds for station identification on the Houston Astros radio network. We’re talking Astros on the Sean Salbury show Monday morning at 6 on your home of the Astros. Sports talk 790 KBME Houston. Two out, nobody on for Luis Renifo. He’s lined out and fouled out. Five nothing Astros lead it. Bottom of the fifth in Anaheim. Pitch to Reo and that’s in there for a strike at the knees. Nothing and one. Well, we know there’ll be one more game and it’ll be tomorrow afternoon. 207 first pitch. Astros starter to be announced. Sam Aldigary left-hander will go for the Angels. Fouled back to the screen and it’s nothing at two. Aldigary a left-hander. Mentioned it earlier. Last 11 seasons for the Astros. They will have played just five games in which they are not in postseason contention. 02 misses high one and two. The games today and tomorrow in a three-game series they played at the end of the 2016 season. Also here in Anaheim one two that’s outside two and two. I remember one of the things I remember from that that last series against the Angels in 2016 when the Astros didn’t have anything to play for was that was the year George Springer played all 162 games. Oh yeah. That last game of the season. I think he might have gotten like an at bat or two and then came out but played in all 162 22 two. That’s high. found out later that AJ Hench had considered having Marwin Gonzalez play all nine positions in that game, but he said he was still a little annoyed. AJ was about the Astros missing the playoffs, so he decided not to do it. No more fun in games. Exactly. 3-2 ground ball softly hit. Deos Santos reached for it behind his back. Instead, Duban gets it and the shorts stop fires to first in time to get the out on Reo. Duban fielded that just to the left of second and the side is retired. One, two, three inning for De Los Santos. And we’re game 161 of the season. Tomorrow is the last game. Zack Cole will lead things off. Astros with a five nothing lead. We’re in the Houston Methodist broadcast booth. Happy to have you with us. Astros with three home runs in this game against this pitcher Kaden Dana who started 21-year-old. Astros got a two-run homer by Cole back in the second inning. He leads off the seventh. Left-handed batter. First pitch is an offspe pitch. A little curve ball lands in there for strike one. Cole scored twice. He has that two-run homer. He’s also walked. Stole a base and scored on the two-run homer by Sanchez. Here’s a ground ball to the right side. Second baseman more to his left of three steps. and he throws out Cole for the first out. With one out, that’ll bring up Sanchez, who had a line drive home run to right field his last time up. His fourth with the Astros. He’s one for two. Now has 14 on the season with 48 RBI’s this time between the Marlins and Astros. First pitch from Dana is in there for strike one. 85 pitches now for the right-hander. As you would imagine, a game like this, a lot of the hitters swinging early in the counts. Here’s the 01 and it’s outside. One ball and a strike. It’s the 47th game for the Astros since Sanchez has come over. Here’s the 1-1. Swing and a miss. Going for the downs and it’s one and two. Right-hander Joseia is up in the Angels bullpen. Dana getting near the end of the line. Mauricio Dons on deck. 87 pitches. The wind up the one two slice foul into the second deck. Hit sharply that way. Still one and two. The Astros with a five to one lead. Here’s the one-two pitch and it’s outside. Two balls and two strikes to Sanchez. If the Astros could hold on tonight and win tomorrow, they’d have 87 wins. Here’s a 2-2 grounded foul to the right. Two hopper into the Astros dugout. Still two and two. And I think if you asked before the season how many wins it would take to get to the playoffs, I think a lot of people would say 88, wouldn’t they? Something right around there. Yeah. In the American League. Yeah. Here’s a 2-2. Shot the other way. Up in the air though. Ward the left fielder toward the corner makes the play and there’s two outs. No, no team is going to win a 100 games this year, which gives you an idea of the parody in in baseball this season with the way things have played out. Blue Jays and Yankees each have 93 wins. So, they could get to 94. That would be the most in the American League. Yeah. Dubonso for two. Strike out and a ground out. Dana delivers the first pitch to Mauricio and he backs out of there. That pitch is a strike. Meanwhile, in the National League, the Brewers have 96 wins. The Phillies have 95 wins. Here’s the 01 to Dubon. Breaking ball. Grounded two hopper to the third baseman Renifo. And a throw offline, but coming off the back, PZA is able to make the catch and step on first base for the third out. So 10 in a row retired by Dana as he’s probably done after seven innings of work. Astros lead 5 to1. It’s time to stretch Astros f before he was feared on the field. Wuna Jr. was chasing wins on a different kind of for the Akunas. El baseball was a story told in fast balls and late night rematches. Every loading screen was a part of the strategy. He makes the catch. Smash the smashes. [Music] That’s how Lestia was born. [Applause] Heat. Heat. Yeah, mine was a tops now as well. I hit my first walk-off last year against the Mets. Jacob Young Nationals win. Now he’s got his first walk-off big league hit. Dad hadn’t bought a stack of them. And I was like, I think we can get these results up. He he went ahead and bought a stack for himself like business card because life happens between sips number 13. 5 to1 lead for the Astros. Bottom of the seventh inning. JP France back out there for the Astros. Second inning work through 25 pitches last inning. 891 for the Angels. First pitch to Denzer Guzman is in there for strike one. Guzman is 0 for two. Right-handed batter, right-handed pitcher JP France. Third pitcher for Joe Easpatada. And here’s the 01. And that just missed the outside corner, that fast ball. And it’s one ball and a strike. Todd Dosio’s on deck. Outfielder straight up. pretty deep. France set just below the belt. The 1-1 breaking ball is upstairs. Two and one. Astros got two runs in the second on a two-run homer by Cole and then a couple of homers in the fourth. Solo homer by Walker and a two-run homer by Jesus Sanchez to give them this five to one lead. Two-1 breaking balls low and it’s three and one. Astros are not going to make the playoffs. Both Detroit and Cleveland won tonight. So, the Astros are on the outside looking in. [Music] Here’s a 3-1 swing and a miss. Three and two. Think about this, Steve. If I told you in July of last year that the Detroit Tigers were on the verge of back-to-back playoff appearances, you would have called me nuts. And you would have been right. Yeah, they were sellers. Three balls and two strikes. Breaking ball got him. Strike three. A little cutter gets it by Guzbun. And there’s one away here in the seventh. It’s eight strikeouts now for Astros pitchers. Angels offense, the highest strikeout rate in baseball. It’s interesting about the Angels is that they’re fifth in the big leagues in homers and they’re 22nd in runs scored. Here’s Teodosio, center fielder. He’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. First pitch is a hook and it’s inside. In other words, if they’re not hitting it out of the ballpark, they’re not scoring. That’s exactly right. Here’s something else I think is interesting about this Angels offense. Third baseman’s in. Foul. So, the Angels have seen the third most pitches per plate appearance of any team in baseball. We mentioned they have the highest strikeout rate and obviously you got to see at least three pitches to strike out, but they don’t walk a ton. They have the 23rd highest walk rate. Here’s the 1-1 and it’s outside two and one. I’m trying to figure out why. I guess they foul a lot of pitches off. I guess but yeah, normally you look at the teams that see the most pitches per plate appearance and that correlates to the teams with the highest walk rates, but not in the Angels case. Good on base percentage, pitches high. Three and one to Teosio. Renhifo’s on deck. One out, nobody on. Yeah, it’s a very, very strange offensive profile. Very unusual one that this Angels team has. Well, they’re like a lot of teams. They sell out for the homer. Big swings. 3-1 ground ball. Short stop. Duban’s got it. Gets rid of it quickly and he gets Teodosio for the second out. Yeah, Teodosio runs well. Duban knows that. That’s why he just made sure he got that ball out of his hand as quickly as he could. Astros lead five to one. Here’s Renifo, switcher. He’s 0 for three. I keep thinking Renifo is going to have that breakout year or get traded. One of those two and it just hasn’t happened. Maybe he needs to get traded to have the breakout year. Maybe 241 average this year with nine homers, 43 RBI’s. And that pitch is outside. He’s the first Angel ever to play second, third, and right field in the same game. showing his flexibility. 01 counter Renifo batting from the left side. Breaking ball outside one and one. Two outs. Nobody on JP France 1-1 is fouled into the second deck to our left and it’s one ball and two strikes to Renhifo. Astros in the gray uniforms and for France those pants go all the way to the cleats that are gray. He comes at it and he gets the sign. Here’s the one. Two change up. Misses low and away. Two balls and two strikes. [Music] You have so many Astros pitchers who have gotten injured and how many are going to be coming back at just about the same time. Here’s a 2- two tip foul in and out of the catcher’s glove. Maybe got a piece of the shin guard at Yiner Diaz. Still two and two. all the pitchers that have gotten hurt. We we couldn’t begin to even name them all, but I think of Wes Neski, Ronell Blanco, Luis Garcia, and Garcia, the Astros already said, is going to miss all of 2026. Brandon Walter, two of two in on the fist, popped up shallow right field toward the line. Bryce Matthews, second baseman, ranges over and makes the catch. Barely in fair territory for the third out of the inning. So a one, two, three inning for JP France. We’ll go to the eighth with the Astros up 5 to one. The Houston Astros meal deal at Lindies. Sometimes your calling doesn’t shout, it hones like a lullabi floating through a warm night in San Pedro. Before he could walk, El Nino had already taken his first step toward greatness. For Philando Tatis Jr. baseball wasn’t just in the house because papa was a protoo. It hung over his cradle like a promise. [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Applause] As someone who grew up in the era of the twist, the locomotion, the Freddy, and other outrageous dances, the floss is easily the worst of all time. The man did touch that ball and that’s a big whoops. Any relation to Grant? I don’t know. That guy was having a hard time figuring out what screen he was supposed to be looking at. What a play Allan Roden. And hopefully he is all right. Look at his eye. I think that’s his eye black. It has been transferred from face to wall. One lead over the Angels. And Jose Aria comes into the game for the Angels replacing Kad Dana with the first seven. His first pitch to Taylor Trmell misses down for a ball. Arania, he’s been busy this year. Not so much busy pitching. He’s been doing that, but he’s been busy moving around. The Angels are the fifth different team he’s played for this year. Overall, a 4.580 RA in 18 games, including six starts pitches, a strike on the outside corner. 53 innings for Irania, 23 walks and 33 strikeouts. He is the third player in major league history to play for five big league teams in one season. 1-1 that is outside two balls and a strike. Started off with the Mets. Got into one game with them in late April after pitching at Triple A Syracuse. Then was with Toronto for six games. Jersey 2-1. Ground ball up the middle. Ranging far to his left. Gloving it is the shortstop Guzman and he will not throw it. A base hit for Cole. Guzman went a long way to get that. But Cole has his second hit. So what are the worst jerseys? It’s the the futuristic night around Major League Baseball. Remember the Astros had that. Every team had these futuristic jerseys that barely had sleeves. They barely went over your shoulder, but they were the weirdest look at things you could imagine. I remember that. It was called turn ahead the clock night. Yeah. First pitch to Sanchez. That’s down for a ball. Jesus Sanchez a two-run homer in the fourth. Yeah. Apparently, this was what, late ‘9s this happened. Yeah. Memory serves. You didn’t even tuck them in, right? Apparently, Major League Baseball at the time thought the future looked like jerseys with massive logos on the front. and very little sleeves. 10. That’s outside. Two balls and no strikes. I guess they thought in the future we wouldn’t need sleeves. I don’t know. Well, funny you should say that. That’s exactly what the Astros have next year. Can you imagine? Oh, Hoppy goes to the mound for a word with Arania. Now, those were weird, but they were long and of course Blondie wore it as a night shirt for a while. So they So it did come in handy. At least it did. Who you were with the Angels then? Yeah. When that happened. Mhm. It’s pretty funny seeing guys like Ken Griffy Jr. and some of the stars around the league wearing jerseys like that. Yeah. Well, Hoppy back behind the plate after conferencing with Irania. Astros lead six to one. Top of the ninth. 20. And that’s over four. Strike two and one. Almost like the White Socks back in the 70s that night when they wore shorts. Yeah. Yeah. Who I mean, why would anybody think shorts was a good idea for a baseball team? 2-1. That’s over for a strike. That’s when Bill Ve owned the White Socks, who was pretty innovative and had a lot of good ideas, but that was not one of the good ones. They had the really high socks over their legs, went up to their knees, those shorts. Two- two swing and a miss. Sanchez goes down on strikes and the side is retired. Christian Walker hits his second homer of the night and we go to the bottom of the ninth. Astros six, Angels won. A lot of life can happen between sips of Dani. Yeah. Heat. Ask [Applause] yourself, are you ready? The show is about to begin. Every pitch, every swing, every moment hits harder. And when these performers step up, the crowd loses its mind. Time to let these maestros of the diamond shine. [Music] We wanted to introduce something new and then working in some of our past and what the past can look like in the future. I think our players absolutely love it and our fans, we think they’ll learn to love it. Especially if you can win in it, you know, that kind of solves everything’s radio network. KBME Houston, an iHeart Radio station. You’ve got Houston Astros baseball exclusively on Sports Talk 790. Astros with a 6-1 lead over the Angels as we go to the bottom of the ninth in the penultimate game of the 2025 regular season. And Craig Kimbell is on to try and get the final three outs. Kimbell in 13 games this year has a 2.45 four five RA 11 innings, 10 hits, seven walks, and 15 strikeouts. Here’s Logan O’Hap 0 for two. Couple of ground outs and a walk. Infield shades to pull. Outfield straight away. First pitch and looks at a strike. Nothing in one. See Campbell throw 92 to 95 miles per hour. Probably averaged somewhere between 93 94 miles per hour with the Astros. But it’s been effective. That fast ball’s been good. 01 pitch misses outside. Keys been getting it into the strike zone. Yeah, struggled with the walks a bit. I think since he’s lost some velocity, he’s felt like he had to go away from that fast ball until the Astros got a hold of him. 1-1. It’s popped up foul and out of play. Off to the right kick. Craig Kimbell fifth in Major League history in saves. 440 saves. Kinley Jansen, who got the save last night for the Angels, is fourth in that list with 476. Mariana Rivera, Trevor Hoffman, and Lee Smith occupy the top three spots. Here’s the one, two. That’s up and away, two and two. Kimell has spent most of this year in the Miners. Started off uh with the the Braves at DA and AAA for the Atlanta organization. and then wound up getting into one game with the Braves in June 2-2. That’s hit foul and out of play off to the right. And then the Rangers picked him up in mid June and he wound up getting into 24 games with their AAA affiliate in Roundro. And Kimell has said that, you know, spending so much time in the minor leagues this year really reinforced for him just how much he loves to play this game 22. This ball’s popped up. Shallow right. Racing out as Matthews coming in. Sanchez. Sanchez gets there and makes the catch. One away. I love that. That’s a great sentiment by Kimbell. You know, here you are pitching away from the the glitz and glamour that Kimell certainly was used to. And you’re not talking about just some ham and Edgar in the big leagues. I mean, the top five all time in in saves. Guy who has done a lot of great things in his career. a ninetime allstar Christian War the batter 0 for two with a walk first pitch there’s a strike on the outside corner and you can’t help but wonder you know this is Kimell’s 16th big league season he’s 37 years old is this the last time we see Craig Kimell 01 and that misses high a ball and a strike I think the other relievers on this Astros team. Just having conversations with them has certainly enjoyed having Kimbell as a teammate. He’s always in a good mood. Always positive. One swinging a miss. Got one by him. 93 mph fast. Just an extension of what you said about it. He loves baseball. Yeah, he was the Orioles closer last year and then really struggled in the second half and wound up getting released in September. One, two, swinging a miss. High fast ball gets more and the Angels are down to their final out. Talk about the the top five saves leaders all time. Mariano Rivera, then it’s Trevor Hoffman, then Lee Smith, Kenley Jansen who pitched in last night, then Campbell. How many times have two of the top five have pitched in the same series? That’s a good point. Oswald PZA final hope for the Angels. He’s 0 for two. Couple of strikeouts in a walk. First pitch, swinging a miss. Chase one down and away that bounced. Nothing in one. Now Rivera and Hoffman pitching in the same World Series, but they weren’t in the top five at the time. And 98 Yankees against the Padres’s. Rivera, Hoffman, and Smith all in the Hall of Fame. Well, Jansen and Kimell join them. 01. That’s high and away. It took Smith a while to get in. And it seems like the Hall of Fame voters are still trying to figure out how to evaluate uh closers and relief pitchers. Of course, we saw Billy Wagner get in this year. One one misses down and away. Two balls in a strike. And it took Wagner his final year of eligibility on the writers ballot to finally get in. Billy Wagner eighth on the alltime saves list. Two-1 to Pza. Swing and a foul tip held on to by Diaz. And the Angels are down to their final strike. Two to PZA. That’s up and away. I remember when Raleigh Fingers got in the Hall of Fame. He was the first pitcher with a losing record to make it to the Hall of Fame. That’s a good one. Great closer. 3-2 swing and a miss. PZA goes down on a high fast and that is the ball game. Well, on a night for the Astros that early on had some disappointment. It ends with a victory as the Astros defeat the Angels 6 to1. We’ll be back with the Gallery Furniture postgame show after this.
