🔴LIVE 🔴Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians /September 30/ Baseball Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

It’s the Detroit Tigers taking on the Cleveland Guardians. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. joined by my partner Chris Singleton. I’m John Shambi. Postseason baseball. Singi, it’s always great to see and be a part of. Oh, Boo, you just never know what’s in store when it comes to postseason baseball. You do know you’re going to see some amazing pitching players coming out of the bullpin throwing a hundred. Some incredible defensive plays, some big knocks, and maybe a mistake or two that’ll live on forever. All I do know is I’m pumped up for this one. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Just about ready to roll here. So, here’s the lefty Logan Allen. What do you have on him, Chris? He may not dominate, but he always keeps the club in the game. If you can score runs, you have a really good chance to win with him on the mound today. Okay, all set to go. And stepping in is the speedy Parker Meadows inside. So, we’re off and running in game one. Right through there for a strike. One in one. [Applause] Line drive caught. And now the Tigers line up for manager AJ Hench. And next up for the Tigers, Zack McKinstre. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Quan makes the catch. Out number two. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Justin Henry Mallaloy stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Swing and a ball driven out to center. That one’s back. Get out of town. That one felt good. It’s one- nothing. with a low 90s fast ball. You have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. And here is Carrie Carpenter. First pitch just misses. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in game one of the wildard series. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. I think it’s huge that they were able to score right away. You’re playing on the road. Stakes are high. energy in the ballpark and you help to quiet that down a little bit to third. Schnean throws across the diamond out number three, but they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching the American League Wildard series on the show. And we’re back. And on the mound today, Jack Flareity try to stay back for that power change up. Speed differential between the fast ball and the change up is huge. Hitters, they have a hard time staying back. So in now for Cleveland, Steven Quan. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Check swing. No appeal. Ball one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits on the ground to first and it gets by him. Just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. [Applause] And now it’s the switchinning second baseman, Anel Martinez. Foul ball there. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Devonz and out number one on the grab. Here’s the Guardians lineup now. Finding themselves down a run early. They’d like to punch back here with a run of their own. Absolutely, Boo. But I don’t expect them to change their approach because of that run. They still want to put together strong at bats. Be patient out there and get a feel for this starting pitcher. Here’s Jose Ramirez. Chris baseball today. So many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Rudder takes off. Pop dump. McKinstre puts it away for the out. Batting for right fielder Jonathan Rodriguez. Now a chance for Jonathan Rodriguez. Let’s go. Jonathan Flareity, 29 years old, a former first round pick back in 2014. Pitch misses. One and0. [Applause] And another ball. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Music] Quan leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] Next offering upstairs, one [Applause] So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit. Bo Naylor at the plate now, swings and he breaks his bat. That is the inning. Guardians strand a couple still behind by a count of one to nothing. Game one of this wildard series. Now it’s the right fielder WIL Perez. Allen back to work and ball one to the right fielder. One wonderful thing about the postseason, you never know who’s going to be the hero. It could be the superstar, but often it’s a far more unlikely player. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. You know, one unlikely postseason hero I saw up close, Alex Gonzalez of the Marlins in the 2003 World Series wasn’t really known for his bat, but he hit a walk-off homer in extra innings in game four. It tied the series and was a huge momentum swing. Hard ground ball base knock. So, a man on base to start the inning. Batting six, second base. And now it’s Bayz [Applause] and that’s a little bit high and that is ball one. Jav Bayz like fellow Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor born in Puerto Rico but was drafted in the first round out of high school in Florida. [Applause] Runner on the go. Strike in there. The throw tag and he’s out. Usually when you see a team try to steal a base in the early innings, it tells you they want to be aggressive on offense, try to force the defense to make plays and slow them down. That’s exactly what they did right there. So, we’ll see if that caught stealing changes the offensive approach moving forward. [Applause] Ball to strike the pitch and that’s in there at the knees for a strike. on the ground. Bayz gone in the play. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Trey Sweeney. Trey Sweeney now at the plate. That’s out to center field. Ramirez in pursuit and makes the play and that’s out number three. After an inning and a half, it’s one- nothing. Back now at Progressive Field. And now the DH Gabrielle Arias. [Applause] Swing at a ball popped in the air out to shallow center. Bayz hauls it in and there’s one away. The short stop Ryan. Here’s Brian Rochio. swing and that’s ripped towards right center. Meadows snags it on the run. Nothing instills more confidence in a team than a center fielder who makes a great play like that on the run. They can feed off the energy he brings just from his playmaking abilities. Daniel Schnean digs in for the Guardians. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. [Applause] I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Two outs. That misses and the count’s full. Fouls it back with two strikes. [Applause] That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. John Kenzie Noel the next to hit takes ball one. [Applause] Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. [Applause] That’s a little bit low. Steven Quan in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Flareity a move to first. Schne back in on a dive. Schne off of first with two away. [Applause] Hit softly on the ground to third. Whips it across and that will end the inning. One left for the Guardians. They’re down one- nothing here in Cleveland. And now the first baseman Andy Abanz [Applause] outside and it’s one and0 [Applause] and that drops in for a strike. [Applause] got him looking for the strike out. Fast ball at the letters, frozen for strike three. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Jake Rogers in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. And there’s a foul ball. The wind and the pitch. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Strike three and that’s two in a row. So the batting order turns over. Parker Meadow up now for the Tigers. He’s 0 for one. And first offering is fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. And the sweeper misses. I got a ball. One strike up the middle and it’s through for a hit. And that keeps the inning alive. [Applause] just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there’s just no one there to knock it down. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Next to hit, Zack McKinstry. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. [Applause] Step off throw to first. Meadows dives back in safely. Check swing and he went and it’s one and one. [Applause] Little bit low. [Applause] That one ripped right center field. Tattooed and gone. He’ll circle the bases. It’s 3 nothing. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat, was very patient, and it paid off. So, two down. Next is the Tigers DH, Justin Henry Mallaloy. He swings and fouls one off. [Applause] Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in here in game one of the wildard series. That one finds the zone. 0 and two now. [Applause] into center and it falls. So, a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. So impressive that he didn’t get tied up or jammed on that pitch inside. Instead, good quick hands allowed him to get the barrel to it. Just shoot it up the middle of the field for that knock. Now here is Carrie Carpenter that cliffs a corner. [Applause] This one in the air. Noel makes the play and that is that. Detroit adds two on this homer. It’s now three nothing. Back here in Cleveland, here’s the left fielder, Steven Quan. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Base hit. That was smoke through the infield and the leadoff man aboard. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. There was nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. Caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. And now Anel Martinez, first pitch and he just misses. Quan gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Squirts away a little bit. Tag save at second and good hustle to move up. That’s a wild pitch. Definitely trying to work down and get that double play ball, but it got away enough to erase any chance of that. Good job of moving up in the scoring position. Now a hit could make that wild pitch really sting. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Fouls one off. Two and two. man at second in the dirt. Got him looking. That’s a strikeout. Now, now it’s Jose Ramirez. First time up was a pop out. [Applause] There’s the strike. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. One out and a runner at second and it’s through for a hit. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 3-1. Everything came together for him. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Jonathan Rodriguez will hit next. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. Fast for a strike. [Applause] [Applause] Here goes the runner. Pitching for a strike. Throw. Save. When your catcher is not a great thrower, you have to do a better job at controlling the running game. And that’s throwing over, that’s stepping off, doing whatever you can to try to keep that base Steelers rhythm off. Well, they weren’t able to do it right there. They’re going to have to make some type of adjustment. Our players are going to be running all game. Runner at second here. One gone. [Applause] Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. [Applause] And that one upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] lined into right and that’ll get down for a base hit. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. And here’s the catcher. Bone nailer. He popped out his first time. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. [Applause] Ground ball left side could be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one. And that’s two. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and this is now a 31 ball game. Start of the fourth and now Wel Perez. Perez, you and I got a chance to broadcast the 2019 All-Star game and the city of Cleveland did such a great job. I felt like wherever you turned, there was some type of ad for the All-Star game. A face of one of the players playing in the game. thought the city overall supported the event really well. Yeah. And I think the players backed it up from the home run derby and the show that was put on between, you know, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Pete Alonsozo, and others. It was off the charts. And then the game is always special. When you see the best in baseball, you remember how special this game is. And to be here at this ballpark, um, I think just was the icing on the cake. Bayz takes low. Second trip to the plate in this one. One out. Base is empty. And that’s ripped into left. Base hit. Now batting shortstop Trey Sweeney. So man aboard. Now it’s the shortstop. Trey Sweeney fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. Fouled off left side. Sweeney goes 6′ 3 in. 24 years old. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. The short stop takes a ball. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. On the ground to first. There’s one return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. One hit in the inning, but no one left. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Tigers three and a Guardians one. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Gabrielle Arias. and a foul ball. You know, these Guardians just haven’t produced as many competitive at bats as I’d like to see in this one. They’re swinging early, being aggressive, but one or two pitches later, the at bat is over. That’s not going to cut it if it’s not resulting in hits. So, they might want to be a little more selective up there. Drilled out towards left center field. That one is back and it’s off the wall. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And now the shorts stop Brian Rochio. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Applause] and a big swing and a miss quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. And that one got a piece of him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Daniel Schneamer digs in now. He reached out a walk his first time. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Pretty well struck. Hits the fence. One runs in around third. He scores and the Guardians tie it up. A costly mistake in the outfield thanks to the bad read and terrible timing for that to happen. That’s a play you just want to forget about. [Applause] And up next for Cleveland, John Kenzie Noel 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. That one off the mark. Two balls, no strikes. Tigers bullpen with some action. Troy Melton getting loose for AJ Hinch. Seaw wall also getting ready. two. [Applause] That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. and a swing and a miss. And there’s one down. [Applause] So, the Guardians lineup turns over. Here’s the Cleveland leadoff hitter, Steven Quan. He’s two for two. [Applause] And there’s the strike. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. And now it’s even up. [Applause] That one the other way. Base hit into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. Well, that’s a smart decision to hold up with one out and the heart of the order coming up. Don’t want to run into an out at home plate. [Applause] Anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians. Go for two in this one. Close but called a ball. Ball one. [Applause] Still only one out here in the inning. [Applause] rolled softly but that goes foul. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a 10 count. Just not able to square it up. [Applause] That one inside lookout. Hit in the air right field. He’s got it. Here comes the runner from third. He’ll score on the sack fly. It’s 43. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Let’s keep it simple. Runner at third, less than two outs. Put the ball in play. And a nice job with the sack fly. Stepping up for the Guardians, Jose Ramirez. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit. goes to second. Save and he’s into scoring position with two away on a wild pitch. [Applause] The next offering misses and it’s two and one. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and the hitters count. Jonathan Rodriguez on deck for the Guardians. [Applause] fouls one away and now three and two. [Applause] Cleveland up a run looking for more. Blows the high heat past them. That’s a strike out. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. We played four. Guardians four and the Tigers three. Game one of this wildcard series. And here’s the first baseman, Andy Abanz. Allen back to work in for a strike. 0-1. Well, these Tigers doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. The numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning and they’ve only struck out twice. So, they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball. Now that Jake Jake Rogers the next to hit. His first at bat was a strike out. [Applause] And that one is downstairs. And that is ball one outside with a breaking ball. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. In the air out towards right center. Rodriguez sizing this one up and he makes the catch. Two away. Now batting seven fielder Parker Meadows. Back to the top of the Detroit order. And next to hit for Detroit, Parker Meadows, one for two. [Applause] Lifted in the air right center field. Ramirez sizes this one up and makes the grab. And that’s a third out. [Applause] Now pitching Troy Melton gets the call from the pen. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Jonathan Rodriguez digs in for the Guardians. the walk and he’s also singled. The wind to the pitch outside low and it’s one and0. You know, these Guardians putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Now batting catcher bone nailer digs in for the Guardians and Chris his big strength is defense. But it is interesting in today’s world of baseball compared to when you played a good defensive catcher is considered differently. Whatever you get offensively is a bonus. But he’s got to put the fingers down. He’s got to present pitches to the umpire. They’re going to help his pitcher get more strikes. I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page. And that’s something that this guy does really well. Gets in sync with his pitchers. Foul ball still a one and two count. Boo. His preparation is off the charts. I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit. He’s so buried in that video room. It’s hard to get a chance to talk to him. spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Applause] Good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Applause] Liner snagged at first. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. [Applause] Two outs. Base is empty. Now it’s the Guardians DH Gabrielle Arias. [Applause] That one lifted to left. Carpenter makes the play and that’s the inning. Leading off for the Tigers, third baseman Zack McKinstry. [Applause] The pitch that one missing inside. Just missed. And another ball. Almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Justin Henry Mallaloy in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. That one finds the zone and it’s three and one. It’s a hitter. You don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. No outs. Runner at first. Justin Henry Mallaloy up now for the Tigers. He’s already homered here in this one. Step off. Throw to first. And he just got his hand in there. [Applause] Slice to right. And now maybe extra bases. Mckinstre headed for the plate. The throw is offline and he’s in to score. It’s 4-4. Well, he delivers in a huge spot right there. Well, he’s so dialed in. I don’t think he even realizes how much pressure exists out there. Very easy swing. Nice and relaxed. This is the type of approach you want to see guys take in this situation. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the Guardians bullpen. Logan Allen departs and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. Now pitching Slade Sakone into the game. Number 44 Slade Sakone. [Applause] [Applause] Go ahead run on base and next will be the cleanup hitter Carrie Carpenter. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Thought with both starters out of the game, this quickly becomes a bullpin game. And this is something we see more and more in the game today, especially in the postseason. [Applause] That’s in there and the count is 0 and two. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Got him. And that’s the first out. You hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach. And that’s a great example why right there. If he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits, he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt. On the other side, still a nice two- strike pitch, though. Now here is Wel Perez. Swung on. Belted on the move. Heading back. Hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double as a run. Scores on the play. He puts a great swing on that pitch and drives home the run. And that was always going to be a double, but the bounce over the wall just took the guesswork out of it right away. It was a nice swing. Now it’s Javier Bayz. [Applause] That one called a strike and it’s 0 and one. One out and a runner at second here in game one of the wildard series. Cleveland has some action going in their pan. Colobby Allard getting ready to go. Bybe the right-hander loosening up as well. [Applause] Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Not really attacking on the mound in this at bat. All breaking balls. So that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Puts it away for the out. Two down. Now batting short stop Trey Sweeney. And up next for Detroit, Trey Sweeney. It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. swing and a tapper that rolls. Foul. Runner at second. Two down and we’re the top half of the sixth that clips the corner. Stays alive. Andy O2, but a short stop. Takes a ball. [Applause] Fights that one away. Still one and two. him. [Applause] Man on second, two down. Rip to short. Tosses to first. They limit the damage here. They put two on the board with a couple of hits. No errors and one left. 789 two up in the home half of the inning. It’s the Tigers five and the Guardians four. [Applause] Back now at Progressive Field. And now Brian Rochio. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Activity in the bullpen for Detroit. Tommy Kanley getting loose for AJ Hinch. Rainey getting loose as well. That just misses. Now one and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. So up next, Daniel Schneman. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the six. Breaking ball misses down and away. Next offering in there for a strike. Two and one now in today’s game. Not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Out to short. Sweeney tosses to first and that quickly. Two away. Now that first base, John Kenzie Noel. And now it’s going to be John Kenzie Noel. [Applause] And that misses one and right through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Outside low. Two and one. [Applause] Just off the inside edge, Steven Quan in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two down to fought off foul [Applause] and a swing and a miss. Guardians go down in order. Nothing do it for the Guardians there. Still down a run. It’s five to four. They hand the ball over to a new arm. Tanner Bbeby gets an opportunity to square off against his former team. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. And now the first baseman, Andy Abanz. clips the corner. It’s 0 and one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. And that’s a strikeout looking. That was pretty nasty. And next up for the Tigers, Jake Rogers. Well, with both starters out of this ball game, it now becomes a battle of the bullpens. And just seeing which manager can match up better and who’s able to get to the finish line. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder, but was able to slow his back down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the at bat alive. Foul ball still 0 and two. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. popped in the air left field. Quan calls it in and there’s two away. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. One for three. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Two down, nobody on here in the late stages of game one. Inside corner and that’s called a strike. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Swing and a miss and he struck him out and it’s a three up three down inning. Tigers are shut down there as they hold on to a 54 lead. [Applause] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Holton. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Back to the top of the order now. So, in now for Cleveland, Steven Quan, three for three with three singles. [Applause] That one outside. Ball one. Fly ball center field. Meadows on the move. Makes the catch. One down. Now batting second base on and here is Anel Martinez. [Applause] [Applause] can’t glove it cleanly. Still able to fire over. Safe. It was never going to be easy after the misplay. Well, it looked like a pretty routine play. Just couldn’t get it to stick in the glove as he gets tagged with the error. Should have been two outs in the inning, but now they have to work around it and get two more. And up next for Cleveland, Jose Ramirez. First offering runner goes swinging a bouncer in plenty of time to first and Ramirez is set down. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Jonathan Rodriguez. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. [Applause] So the tying run at second. [Applause] Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] hit hard. Should be extra bases coming home. He’ll score and they’ve tied it and he’ll pull into second safely. Huge at bat to bring home the tying run at this point in the game. As soon as that one shot off his barrel, he was thinking extra bases. Really nice job of getting the bat out front, but not hooking around it or rolling over it. Just kept the swing on plane and smoked that thing into the gap. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. So runner at second, two down. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Bone Naylor 0 for three in this one. And he takes a strike. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. That’s way outside and it’s two and one. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position [Applause] towards first. Ivanz takes it himself. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. All even at five apiece. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Matt Festa now pitching for the Guardians. Number 52. Matt Festa. Here’s the third baseman, Zack McKinstry. He’s already homered in this game. Zack McKinstry. Ground ball right side and it goes just foul [Applause] in the air left field. Quan gets under it, reaching for it, makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Justin Henry Mallaloy getting ready to hit. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. [Applause] First pitch misses. Movement in the pen for the Guardians. Cade Smith, the closer, is getting loose. Gatis warming up as well. All tied up here in game one of the wild card series. [Applause] Late swing fouled off. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Swing and a miss. And it’s one and two. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] That’s outside. Two and two. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt. Got him. Two gone after the strikeout. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Carrie Carpenter and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. No, he’s really working that inside corner with the cutter. I tell you what, I hated that pitch. So tough to get the barrel to and to keep it fair in the air left field. Quan settles underneath it. Brings it in. And that is that back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Tommy Canley. Gabrielle Arias digs in for the Guardians. Gabrielle Arias right through there for a strike. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And that is strike two. [Applause] And a slider misses down and away. Really nice slider right there. Sweeping across the dish, but just couldn’t hang the edge. Swing and a miss. And a change up in the dirt. Gets to it onto first in time to get him. One away in the strikeout. And the batter will be the shorts stop. Brian Rochio. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Hit in the air out to center field and there’s two away. Now batting third baseman Daniel stepping up for the Guardians. Daniel Schnean though he came up clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach. Think hard right back up the middle and that’s downed away. Activity in the bullpen. Paul Seawald getting loose for AJ Hinch. Two outs. That’s in there. And that is strike one. Check swing called. stride [Applause] that one back up the middle and it gets through. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive and puts the go-ahead run on base. Batting first base. So in now for Cleveland John Kenzie Noel 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. just missed. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. Two gone. The possible go-ahead run at first. Sliced hard but foul [Applause] and fouled off. [Applause] Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. We refer to third base as the hot corner, but that one was a hot one on the other side of the diamond. Nice job. Quickly leaving the ground, makes the catch and that ends the inning. New inning getting started now. It’s going to be Wel Perez. Festa back to work. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] Swing and a ball popped in the air. Squeezes it and there’s one down. So here’s Bayz now. [Applause] on the ground to third and it stays fair. Here comes the throw. Not in time. He’s got a double. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time. Good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Now the go-ahehead runs in scoring position. So big opportunity for them to jump ahead late. And next to hit for Detroit, Trey Sweeney. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball one. Lots of anxious fans in the ballpark right now. You can feel it. One out. The go-ahead run is it second here in the late stages of game one. [Applause] Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And there are two outs. Now batting first base Andy. The Tigers going with the pinch hitter, Riley Green. And he’s got the go-ahead run out there in scoring position for him. He gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. Now that the Tigers going with a pinch hitter, Dylan Dingler, a critical at bat in this game for him. [Applause] Fouled off down the right side. [Applause] fast ball for a strike. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. with the go-ahead run standing at second. You’re in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Next pitch misses. Now one and two. [Applause] Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Swing and a liner. Base hit out into right center field. Here comes Bayz around third. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. And in the ninth, they take the lead. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity. And he came through for his club right there. Parker Meadows now at the plate. [Applause] Swing and a ball lifted in the air. shallow right field brings it in and that is that. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now 65. And here’s the closer to try and finish off game one. Will Vest. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Spencer Torqulson getting loose there. He’s now in the game at first. Well, one-run game. Steven Quan digs in now. [Applause] That’s in there. Going one. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. And ring him off, says Patrick Johnson. That’s a strikeout. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. come in and close the door, cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. [Applause] Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit and that puts the tying run on base. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. The batter now, Jose Ramirez. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. [Applause] fought off foul with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball. [Applause] just misses there on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. Jonathan Rodriguez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. 3-2 right side hard hit off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. So, they’re down to their final out. Jonathan Rodriguez digs in for the Guardians. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah. I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Throw to first. Ramirez back on a dive. Well, at least you got the pitcher thinking a little bit. You don’t want to run yourself out of the ball game. You get thrown out or picked off, it’s over. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. [Applause] Hard liner and that’ll do it. The Tigers hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Heat. Heat.
