POSITIVES: The Washington Nationals Finally Found Their Face Of The Franchise With James Wood

This might be a little ironic coming from me because the Nationals have always had a player development issue, but in 2025, you saw not one but two potential stars develop for your Washington Nationals. [Music] You are Locked on Nationals, your daily Washington Nationals podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And thank you all for making Lockdown Nationals your first listen every single day as we are free and available wherever you get your podcast. And I am your host Ryan Clary, your Nationals insider here, part of the Locked On podcast network, where is your team every single day. And later on in today’s program, we’ll have a discussion surrounding postseason baseball that kicks off today. I always do this on day one of the wild card. We predict our World Series champion on today’s show. So, we’ll discuss that later on in the show today. And in the second segment, we will have a deep dive on some of the pitching staff because today is a good day and it’s a day to celebrate. Yesterday we were negative. Today we’re going to be positive. So we’ll discuss that and what went right for the Nationals pitchers pitching staff later on in the show today. But we start off discussing the two stars that developed right here in Washington DC. James Wood and Dalen Lyall. But today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. And right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Download the app today. So, we get started discussing why James Wood and Dave Lyle were probably the two biggest highlights of 2025. Let’s start off with James Wood. James Wood was on a pretty historic pace for a rookie beginning this season. I mean, if you look at his first app numbers, and the reason why he was an all-star is because he batted .278. He had a 534 slug. He had 24 home runs, 69 RBI’s, and 99 hits in just 95 games. The second half was a completely different story. But here’s the good thing for Nationals fans. I believe that you’re going to get the production of a first half James Wood. This guy comes in just so many different angles at this with James Wood is the best overall hitter on this team. Let’s get out of that out of the way of that right now. Number two, I think he has real 50 run 50 home run threats for this team down the road. I think James Wood at some point in his career could be in the MVP conversation. I think this is someone who could hit 50 home runs a year. Not saying he’s going to do it annually, but I think he has that kind of power. This is a superstar player. And in 2025, what the year showed me was that this is going to be the face of your franchise moving forward. This is your Bryce Harper. This is the 2020’s version of Bryce Harper. Now, some people out there might say, “Please don’t say that. The Nationals never won a World Series with Bryce Harper. We went on to go against our NL East foe with the Philadelphia Phillies. That’s not the point of this conversation. The point of this conversation is that you finally have that star player to lead you in the 2020s. We thought it would be Juan Sodto. You trade him away and you get James Wood and a bunch of other talent who should be here for a long time. James Wood is the face of the Washington Nationals. That is what was established this season. He has established himself as one of the games top power hitters in my opinion. Even for his second half struggles, consider this for a second. He only hit seven home runs across what his 62 games that he played in the second half. Considering that he had 24 home runs in his first 95 games this season, he was well on pace at one point to hit 40 plus home runs. in his rookie season. That does not grow on trees. That is not something that you can even necessarily develop. This is a godgiven gift that James Wood has and we are just lucky enough that he is a Washington National. You can sit there and sweat out how bad the second half was for him. Chasing down Mark Reynolds all-time strikeout record for a single season. Luckily, he didn’t finish. He finished a few shy of that, but I don’t even care about that. His rookie season as a 22-year-old proved to me that this is someone that you’re going to build around for future years. This is going to be the guy who’s taking the Papa John’s commercials, the guy who is going to be on the billboard over at the Geico parking garages behind left field. This is your new face of the franchise. And in the year of 2025, you have someone that you can say, “Well, we’re gonna build around this guy.” I love CJ Abrams, but in years past, he was not necessarily someone that you’re like, “We’re going to build around him.” CJ is a great player. I think he’s a great hitter, but he’s got a lot of holes defensively that he’s going to have to patch up eventually. But with James Wood, you saw him patch up those holes defensively. You saw him play a much better and more confident left field position. And even later on in the year, you saw him make incredible plays, incredible game-saving plays, by the way, against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the bottom of the ninth or in the top of the ninth inning, saving a runner across the board, helping the Nationals get the win, getting that second out in the ninth inning. That is something last year that nobody would have expected from him in left field. So, you saw a much more confident left fielder defensively. That is one thing in my mind that I’m not going to look past because we know what he can do offensively. And you might be sitting there and be like, “Well, what about the last 50 60 games of his season?” I don’t care about that for now. I care about what he did for the first 95 games this year. as a 22-year-old, this is a star player that you will build around for hopefully years to come. And I think that will be the case moving forward. And then the second star, Dalen Lyall. Dalen Lyle was probably the most pleasant surprise for the Washington Nationals. And quite frankly, let’s be honest for a second. Dalen Lyle was what we thought Dylan Cruz would be in 2025. Dylan Cruz was the expected guy to win the NL Rookie of the Year. Dalon Lyle has put himself in a position to gather votes for that first top spot in my opinion. I think Dalen Lyall probably was the best or in fact definitely was the best rookie hitter in the second half of the season. He was the Nationals MVP from the middle of the July all the way through the end of September here. Dalon Lyall was your breakout premier rookie that in my opinion is going to be a starter for this team for years to come. And what we saw this season, I don’t just think that he is going to do that moving forward. I think that he can even build on it. As the season went on with Don Lyle, number one, he continued to make a rookie of the year case. I don’t think he will necessarily finish as a rookie of the year. I think he’ll finish in the top three vote getters, right behind Drake Baldwin of the Atlanta Braves, and as well as Cade Horton of the Chicago Cubs, but Denon Lyle put himself in position to be that top rookie in 2025. And if you really look at it, there was no one more valuable on this Nationals team in the second half than outfielder Denon Lyle. The Nationals have finally tapped into something here with Lyall, in my opinion. And again, it feels kind of ironic that all we have done or at least all that I have done is complain about the player development and complain about how you are not able to really develop any stars nowadays. You are not able to tap into the best talent possible by the way of analytics. Don Ly and James Wood, while I’ve crushed Mike Rizzo over the past year, he’s Mike Rizzo products. So kudos to Mike Rizzo. Again, I think he deserves credit for developing these two guys and also Mike Dearllo as well, the interim general manager here in town. But what I see in Dalen Lyall is I see someone who is not only just a core building block, but someone who has the potential to be a star player. I kept on watching Dalon Lyle, his approach at the plate, elite, the way that he conducted himself each and every single day, getting better defensively, getting better offensively, the elite numbers that he put up, setting the Nationals rookie records, 11 triples in 84 games as of September 19th. He broke the previous Nationals rookie record of nine triples with Bryce Harper back in 2012. He had two triple games this season. Don Lyle is a very, very special player and he kind of reminds me, don’t get twisted here, of a Daniel Murphy type of hitter. Someone who’s going to hit for average. He’s going to get the extra base hits. He’s going to find the gaps. And that is what good hitters do. He is a pros pro when it comes to making contact with the baseball. If you look at his baseball soant numbers this season, number one, his expected batting average is in the 99th percentile. That’s pretty sweet. His sweet spots p percentage in the 100th percentile. His whiff percentage in the 81st percentile, his strikeout percentage in the 82nd percentile. This is someone who is an elite hitter at just the ripe age of 22 years old. you are going to have this guy for the duration of the future. And in my opinion, he has an opportunity to build off of what was in a stellar rookie season. And I think that Don Lyall could be a star for the Washington Nationals moving forward. This is someone who I’ve loved to watch play. And if I’m a Nationals fan out there, I would be thrilled with what you have seen with Dalen Ly, the 2021 second round pick. This has proven to be, in my opinion, your second best player as of right now. I love Dylan Cruz. I think he brings a ton of value to this team, but Don Lyall is the second best Washington National right now behind James Wood. He is definitely going to have to improve defensively, but as we saw with James Wood in year two, he looked lost in 2024 out in left field. This season was almost elite in that defensive category. I think Lyall could build off of that. Now, he’s playing a trickier position in right field at Nationals Park with some weird corners there. We all know how that plays, but I think Dalon Lyle could easily build off what was a stellar rookie season and proved to be a potential all-star player down the road. That is what I saw with the Washington Nationals in 2025. And those are my two big takeaways from this season. So, we’ll have breakdowns for both those guys as the week goes on here. James Wood, of course, your star. He’s going to hit 40 home runs one day for the Washington Nationals. And then Dalen Lyall, who could be one of your better hitters down the road and a big building block for what is to hopefully be a postseason team here in DC in just a short amount of time. So, we’ll discuss both those guys later on this week. You will not want to miss it. But next, let’s talk about the pitching staff. You produced an all-star. You also produced someone who is not expected to really produce in 2025. So, we’ll tell tell you all about that after this. And later on in the show today, we’ll have a discussion surrounding the World Series. And I’ve got my predictions. Analise fans, they’ll want to tune in. But before that, we will be discussing McKenzie Gore and your breakout pitcher, Brad Lord. could be. I think McKenzie Gore is again your ace moving forward as long as they don’t trade him, which we’ll discuss that at some point this off season if the Nationals should trade him, if they should move on to some pieces here. But with that being said, McKenzie Gore is at the very least going to be your ace for 2026. And he is at least going to be a big big piece to this Nationals future. And as we saw in the first half this season, he was stellar as far as what he can control. his first 19 starts of the season. He had a 302 RA and 110 innings pitch, 138 strikeouts in that time frame as well and a 1196 whip on the year and also 11 and a half Ks per nine. McKenzie Gore was amongst major league leaders in strikeouts for the first half this season. He was dominant and as we saw the season go by, injuries started to rack up a little bit. Some arm fatigue in there as well. And unfortunately, he did fall off production-wise a little bit there. But in the first half this season, only yielding a 236 batting average against and a 69 659 OPS against him. He was amongst one of the elite pitchers in the National League. And that is why someone of his just kind of pedigree at this point was generating so much trade interest. Teams like the Red Sox, teams like the Cubs, the Tigers were in on him. All these teams wanted a piece of what McKenzie Gore was. And what I saw this season is someone that you can at the very least build off of for years to come. McKenzie Gore does have some faults though and at times you can see some erratic pitches as for the second straight year he led major league pitchers in wild pitches this season. Although I do believe that has to do with some of the defensive flaws with the Washington Nationals. But beyond that point, Gore was elite for a good chunk of this season. And for the second straight year, you unfortunately saw him kind of fall off in that second half, which might be a little worrisome to others. But this was still someone where you saw the tiptop of his ceiling. You saw what he could be when he is at his best. And that is exactly what you want from someone who is again told that you are the ace of this franchise, that you are the guy for this team moving forward. McKenzie Gore proved to me this season that he is going to be a top-of-the-line starter for years to come. And with that in mind, the Nationals have not been able to develop top tier pitching talent for years. And I’m not going to really give the Nationals all the credit for developing McKenzie Gore. He was with the San Diego Padres’s for three, four years before he made his major league debut. That’s kind of where the development comes from a top tier organization who does develop talent. But McKenzie Gore took a step up this season. And as we saw in the first half, he earned that all-star selection. He earned the fact to represent this team down in Atlanta. And quite frankly, he was in the Sai Young race for a majority of this year. For the first 95 games, there were maybe two, three, four better pitchers in the National League than what McKenzie Gore was. He was awesome for this team. And as we saw, every five days, you knew what you were getting from Gore. You knew that you were getting six to seven innings pitched. You knew that you’re going to get eight to nine strikeouts per per start. And you knew that this team would unfortunately not have any offense to go with it because as we saw the run support for Mackenzie or this season was brutal at times and that was unfortunate because again this is someone who in my opinion is one of the better starting pitchers in the NL East and I do believe that Mackenzie Gore could be even better in 2026 and beyond with some tweaks because he’s only 26 years old. He will be 27 on opening day next season and that is when I think that he is going to enter the prime of his career and you will see the best version of McKenzie Gore. Last but not least, Brad Lord. The development of Brad Lord this year might be one of the better stories for the Nationals. We’ve talked about James Wood. We’ve talked about Dalon Lyle. We’ve talked about McKenzie Gore. Now let’s talk about Brad Lord. The difference is between all of those guys there, you have a first round pick, a top three pick with McKenzie Gore, you have two second round picks, and James Wood was really a first round pick if you kind of think about it. And then you have Brad Board, an 18thround pick out of USF. You were not expecting this guy to develop to be a stud in a rotation that was quite frankly pretty bleak at times. But what we saw this season is someone who even if he is not a starting pitcher long term. He is someone that you can at least fill a gap with and you can at least build on with. With Brad Lord at just 25 years old, you can build off what he had this season. You can say to yourself, well, this guy will be in the starting rotation for at least the next season. But if not that, then you will have someone who will be able to eat innings out of your bullpen. you will have a pretty elite arm who could potentially be an opener or who could maybe relieve Jake Irvin if he only goes three four innings in a start. Brad Lord was one of the better stories of the Nationals in 2025 and the fact that he made the opening day roster is pretty incredible considering last year he begun the season in single A Wilmington. Brad Lord developed beautifully for this Nationals team. And as we saw all spring training long, there was whispers of Brad Lord making the major league roster, but it still seemed pretty far-fetched because the Nationals aren’t really that aggressive with their pitching prospects. They like to let them simmer down in the minors and then they’ll bring them up when they are having that hot streak. So when the Nationals first put on Brad Lord, I was like, well, okay, this is what we’re doing for now. I guess we’re gonna do this with the DJ Hers injury. I think Brad Lord got his opportunity. He was in the bullpen and then he took off and he was running with it and he was never sent down to Triple A. In fact, he was at first your most valuable bullpen piece outside of Kyle Finnegan and then at times this season with McKenzie Gore struggling in the summer months, Brad Lord was one of your better starting pitchers. the kind of takeoff that he had this season reminded me a lot of DJ Hers last year had some struggles in the minor leagues got up into the majors and really took that step up that a lot of us are looking for when you’re having a young kind of core of a team here and you got to see those steps up from Brad Lord. So, from what I have seen from the Nationals this season, again, it was a negative year, but those are all positives that you had from this season. You could look back in this year and say it was a disappointing season. I talked about it yesterday. If you missed that, go hear it. You you’ll want to hear some negative stuff because we had it. But also this season, you did have some individual solid performances. And at the forefront of it was James Wood, who is the face of this franchise. Dalen Lyle, your breakout rookie. McKenzie Gore finally showing that ace potential at a pretty steady consistent rate. And then you had Brad Lord, your 18th round pick back in 2022, developed into what is a back-end starter or maybe a forefront of your bullpen for years to come. Those are your positive that you can look at. But maybe the Nationals will get back into the postseason next year. And with that in mind, we got to start predicting who’s going to be in the World Series. I always do it once a year. I know we’re a Nationals podcast. This is the one segment that we take a look outside of the Washington Nationals of You Have Got Postseason baseball starting today at 100 p.m. Eastern time. I’ll tell you who’s in the World Series and go through that bracket after this. The NFL season is here and FanDuel has an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win. That’s right. Pick a bet, put down five bucks, and if it hits, you’ll unlock $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. And I love how FanDuel gives me so many ways to play. I’ve built parlays. I’ve tried player props and even followed the live lines during games. And it makes watching football even more exciting when you have like, as we saw last night, a Darren Waller anytime touchdown score. I bet on that. His first game back, he scored a touchdown. It made that game even more exciting to watch. And whether you’re a casual fan or love diving into the stats, FanDuel makes the game day experience so much better. So, what are you waiting for? Visit fanuel.com to download the FanDuel app today and get started. Again, visit the FanDuel.com app, download FanDuel today and get started with our friends that is America’s number one sportsbook, the official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball. And we jump back into it with postseason baseball starting today. And of course, we have to get into some predictions for what will happen in the World Series. So, let’s go through the bracket real quick. First and foremost, you have got the first game of the day today, the Guardians and the Tigers. This series, I have got the Detroit Tigers winning. They have completely fallen off. This was the best team for a majority of the year this season, but then you saw the Brewers really take flight in the second half. The Tigers took flight south and they completely plummeted of what was them sitting at the top of the throne and the Guardians miraculously won the AL Central. So that was a really cool series there. I think the Tigers still win this in three games. I think the Tigers have the edge. I like Tariq Scooble and I think the Tigers are overall just the better team at this point and I do believe they get right in a three-game series against the Guardians. And then we make our way to the Red Sox and the Yankees. I’ve got the Yankees winning against the Red Sox. I think the Red Sox are a fun young team that have set themselves up thanks to Paul Tammani, your Nationals new president of baseball ops here in town. They have a very bright future ahead of them. But I still like the Yankees in a three-game series. I like Judge. I think Judge has his playoff moment that we have been waiting for for almost a decade. You will see that in this series. Book it. Might be a walk-off home run, might be a game-winning home run, but I think Judge has that pivotal postseason moment that we have all waited for. So, I’ve got the Red Sox or I’ve got the Yankees and I’ve got the Tigers going to the ALDS. And on the other side of it, the Cincinnati Reds and the LA Dodgers. I have got the Dodgers winning this. I think the Reds the Reds have had a very fun season, but listen, I’m not going to pick against the Dodgers at this point, at least this point in the bracket. I think the Dodgers are still the most talented team in baseball, the best team. They won the World Series last year. They know how to win when it comes to October here. I unfortunately have the the Reds losing this series and unfortunately having it lose pretty quick in just two games. Then you have the Padres’s and the Cubs. I’ve got the Padres’s big. I think the Padres’s are the one of the best teams in baseball. And honestly, we have not talked about them. Baseball as a whole has not talked about the Padres’s this year. They have just quietly been a great team since the beginning of June. And honestly, this might give it away. They’re giving me 2019 Washington Nationals vibes at this point. So stay tuned for that. So, in the second round, I’ve got the Tigers and the Mariners. I’ve got the Mariners winning that pitching wins in October. Is there a better starting staff than the Seattle Mariners right now? I’m not convinced of it. I have them going to the ALCS. And then you have the Yankees and the Blue Jays. I think the Yankees star power throttles the Toronto Blue Jays and they have got a very good team, but I think the lack of experience going up against the Yankees and what they have done is going to pay a big price for them. Max Freed is going to be a stellar postseason performer in New York in my opinion. his first season with the Yankees, he was incredible this season. And really, I think that right now at the National or with the Yankees, they are still the most talented team in the American League. So, I have them facing off against the Mariners in the ALCS and in the NLDS. I’ve got the Dodgers and the Phillies and the NLDS there. Phillies, you’re done. I’ve got the Dodgers going to the NLCS. I’m sorry. the no red October this season. It’ll be a quick in and out. The two seed in the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies and Bryce Harper. You’ll have to look ahead to Cancun. Say Cancun on three. One, two, three, Cancun. Yes, the Phillies, they stink. So, let’s go and watch that later on. I’ve got the Dodgers moving past them. And then in the second NLDS matchup, the Padres’s and the Brewers. I will never pick the Brewers to win a postseason series. I don’t care how good they are. They find ways to choke. You’ve seen it. You saw it last season with the Mets. You saw it with the Nationals in 2019. You saw it with the Dodgers in 2021. They do this. They’re going to do it again. Padres’s in six or Padres’s rather in four against the Brewers. So with that in mind, the Mariners and the Yankees in the ALCS, a pitching matchup, a pitching tilt that I think will be just incredible to watch, but the Yankees have the star power to get them back to the World Series. I think the Yankees are in the World Series again. Quietly have had a really strong finish to 2025. I think their pitching and also their offensive performance will get them back into the World Series. So your Yankees are the American League champions. And on the other side of this, you have got the Dodgers against the Padres’s for the second straight year. This feels like the World Series again. Except this time I’ve got the Padres’s. I think Manny Machado gets to the World Series and this year he will win it going up against the Yankees. I like the Padres’s to beat the Yankees in six games and they will be your 2025 World Series champions. It feels like a sexy pick, but when you look at it, they’ve got the pitching. They’ve got the bullpen. Their bullpen, their back end of the bullpen is the best in baseball that is going to pay a big price down the road here. We’ll see how Mason Miller pitches in the postseason. We’ve never seen him pitch in October. So maybe that kind of gets to him as we have seen it get to Josh heraldis Chapman’s and some of the great closing pitchers in baseball. But right now I love the Padres’s and I think as I sit here today I am ready to crown them the 2025 World Series champions and that will be a fun postseason to watch. So, thank you all for making Lockdown Nationals your first listen every single day as we are free and available wherever you get your podcast. Enjoy the postseason baseball today and as the week goes on, we will break down more of the Washington Nationals. But until then, I will catch you guys on the flip side. Have a good one. Go Nats.

We look at the positives today with the Nats in 2025 as James Wood put himself in position to be the face of the franchise for years to come. We also discuss the Nats breakout rookie Daylen Lile as he was the biggest story of the 2nd half for the Nats. The Nats pitching staff wasn’t all too positive, but we found a lot of positives in Nats ace MacKenzie Gore as he made his first All-Star team down in Atlanta. Last but not least, the Nats breakout pitcher was Brad Lord and he had a stellar rookie season.

  1. Paul Dejong will be the MVP next year right? and cade cavali will win CY young right? or wait, I think drew millas will win MVP. Yes he's 100X better than realmuto

  2. Can't agree with that. Wood had a terrible second half, and he's a strikeout artist in a league of his own. You're being way too premature. And in terms of leadership and charisma he's sorely lacking.

  3. I agree with you about Wood and Lile but I would also add Abrams too as significant building blocks. All of them have issues in the field but hard work has shown in the past that defense can be improved. Lord reminds me too much of Irvin with his stuff hopefully he can command it better with more consistency to be a solid back of the rotation starter next season.

  4. Brad Lord is Tanner Roark 2.0. Tanner gave us some solid innings as a starter back in the day. But where the heck is Josiah Gray? Last I saw, he was throwing bull pen sessions in June.
