The NHL First-Round Pick Who’s A 6’7 QB
You can’t miss Minnesota Dina High School senior Mason West when he’s standing on a football field. That comes with being 6’7 and a star quarterback. But West stature and stardom isn’t limited to football. The Chicago Blackhawks selected West in the first round of the 2025 NHL draft and believe his potential on the ice has been barely tapped. Many scouts believe the Blackhawks were reaching too high and not everyone was convinced West was fully committed to hockey. Despite receiving D1 offers for football and still getting calls, Wes has said he’s firmly committed to playing hockey and will be at Michigan State next season. Minnesota is one of those rare places where it’s local love for hockey meets the country’s love for football and produces crossover stars like former Edina High School quarterback Andrew Lee, who is now the captain of the New York Islanders. For now, Mason West is soaking up the experience of playing out his senior year. Under the Friday night lights against Eden Prairie, another top Minneapolis area program, West showcased his vision, athleticism, and strong arm, throwing for 279 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three interceptions and was sacked a handful of times in Dina’s 40 to19 loss. The Blackhawks organization is keeping a close eye. General manager Kyle Davidson even made the trip out to Eden Prairie. Really excited to support Mason and kind of see him in action and pretty good. Hey, he looks huge out there and a couple nice throws. Mason West might be able to count how many goals he scores in the NHL or how much money he makes over his hockey career, but playing one final season of high school football with his teammates and in front of his family, that will always be priceless.
