Padres vs. Cubs NL Wild Card Game 2 Highlights (10/01/25) | MLB Highlights
It’s game two of this best of three National league wild card series between the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres. Another sellout crowd. The Cubs winning an exhilarating 3 to 1 ball game yesterday and today they can win the series with a victory over the Padres. Andrew Kittridge is on the mound. Chicago goes with an opener today ahead of Imana. So Kittridge pitched in the eighth inning yesterday and he’ll get the first in game two. Fernando Tatis Junior will lead off. He settles himself in the right handed batter’s box, one ball and one strike. The pitch. Tatis lines it up the middle into center field. That’s a base hit first knock of the series for Fernando and a leadoff single top of the first innings. The national league leader in hits 292 end of the regular season on a 15 game hit streak but was zero for four yesterday , including a rare strikeouts holding has arise flex the ball to right center for a base hit back to back single start. Game two for San Diego. I know Luisa Rise has been a little bit slow yesterday zero for yesterday, but the month of September was good to him. Andrew Kittridge immediately in a pickle sits by Tatis and arise and now out Manny Machado and the fans making noise, swing and a miss strike three breaking ball got him. Machado might have chased a pitch that broke off the outside edge hits out number one and now two on one out for Jackson Merrill Cubs do have to be careful here. Tatis had more steals of third than anybody but jose Caballero in the majors this year and Dansby Swanson has moved a little closer to. There goes Tatis for third. Kelly won’t even throw it. It’s a double steal for one out this time. He times it perfectly. Kelly couldn’t get it out of his glove 2nd and 3rd. Now for Jackson Merrill to get the job done. Merrill fly ball to the right field that drives Suzuki back in front of the warning track. He’ll throw it into second. Arise takes third Tatis in and San Diego strikes first in the opening inning of game two. A sacrifice fly from Jackson Merrill one run in the Padres last 33 innings in the postseason. Now bluffing down the line a rise, the 11 pitch line toward left coming in as Ian hat makes the catch and that ends the inning bottom of the first inning and Dylan C making his fourth career postseason start, he can still strike out 215 strikeouts on the year and it’s some elite stuff. It’s to Bush on zero and two hit in the air to right center field. Merrill’s got a bead on it into the gap. He’s there to make the catch and again, balls in the air to right field. You’re going to have to really hit it. Horner drove in a run yesterday and his first ever career postseason game, the continuing his strong series with a one out hit one. Padres bottom of the first one away. And a man at first, Ian Ha the batter and swings and misses here gets him again. Make it one for 20 2, 98 MPH. We highlighted it yesterday. Struggle with the fastball. C certainly has a top notch fastball. A one pitch hard on the line to left center. She had him well played just a few steps over and back. He makes the catch and the inning is over for the first time as a big leaguer. Sho Imana. Second year Cubs starter from Japan will pitch in relief. The relief roll after inning. Well, the windy day might be good for Shoda who has allowed 31 home runs in his 25 starts this year. This ball is playable, I believe foul territory. Kelly, the Cubs catcher makes the play and that’s out. Number ones got in on his hands nicely one away and it brings up Gavin sheets. Ches gets one up in the zone and puts it high of the year to center Pete Armstrong will put him away two quick outs in the air and even a should feel pretty comfortable against the Padres two starts this year, man , he went 12 and a third against them in two starts. Only allowed one earned run season, er, a 3.73 123 guys. He’s had six home runs in his last 16 at bats. He’s homered in five straight games going back to the regular season Suzuki strikes out on a devilish slider strikeout for Dylan C so far he is on his game counsel told us before the game for them to be able to get to see. They’re going to have to be more patient than they have been. Not chase. Kelly goes after another high heater. This one is 100 and it’s propped up to Bogus retired Cubs trail 1 to 0 2nd up in the batter, Pete Armstrong eighth pitch of the at bat of the way and a swing and a miss got him to chase a slider that was basically in the dirt and a 1232 strikeout. Second inning for Dyllan C. Mike Schultz. Teams are very prepared and detailed. You spend a couple of minutes with him. It’s easy to tell. One and two Fermin swings rips it in the air down the left field line, not going to get there. That’s a fair ball, one hop up against the wall in the left field corner and Freddie Fermin at second base with a leadoff double. San Diego gets a runner in scoring position for Tatis already up a run and Fernando’s first pitch swinging trying to inside out a ball to right here comes Suzuki makes the catch and foul ground and a good arm will keep at second runner on second one away. Rise is already singled and arise grounds the ball to Niko Horner here and there are two down on the play. Fermin advances to third but now there are two down and you’ve got Machado coming up and he hits a high fly ball playable right center Armstrong and Suzuki say makes the catch despite a leadoff double, the Padres do not score. The shadow line is about oh about 3 ft behind the umpire right now and moving out toward the plate area. Here’s a liner in the left center field of base hit over toward the alley as Merow Dansby is taking a big turn and holding on with a single. Matt Shaw stands in Padres expecting bunt, which is what Shaw did in the eighth inning yesterday to help them get that add on run by and at second base Swanson just stuck in there. We’ll see if San Diego chooses to use a challenge and remember you get an extra challenge in the postseason and the Padres will call for a review. I don’t know if you can overturn that call the field. I don’t know if his glove gets there before, that’s a tough one , Swanson’s hand, if you look at it real close, you can almost see the wrinkle in Bogart’s glove. When I say the wrinkle, that means when it actually touches the base, it wrinkles back a little bit. So dance Swanson by maybe half a fingertip saves the inning for Chicago one and one in the air, right center field, not deep at all. Jackson Merrill into the spot, fernando there as well. And Merrill makes the catch as they sort of bonk into one another, but the inning is over has been good in relief. Andrew Kittridge opened the game and gave up a run on two hits with a strikeout and I A has allowed just one hit through two. The leadoff walk for Jackson Maryland that brings andrew Bogart to the plate who has swung the bat tremendously here in his first few at bats of this wild card series on the sneaker , man. Let’s get it done right there fouled out his first time gets a sweeper and he is on time for it. Ryan o’hearn destroyer of lefties down the stretch. He’s got his first hit in this postseason and San Diego hits two on with one out. San Diego is going to go to the bench early on here in the fourth inning. Jose Iglesias will pinch it for gavin Sheets. Lights this ball sharply at Armstrong and nearly overran it and makes the catch for out number two trying to put a zero on the board here in the fourth inning. Ronan Worth struck out his first time. This ball is hit on the ground is short by Swanson throws to first to get him good play by Dansby. The Padres got a single and a walk. They walk away empty handed. And I tell you what, I don’t know that the odds were that Dylan would still be out there in the fourth inning unless maybe the Padres had a huge day offensively. But here he is and put the ball in the air foul ground. Machado can’t get to it. Dives to the edge of the cup dugout and Machado doing his best right there, man. You talk about wide open trying to make a play hope he is ok. Going hard one quick peek. You got to slide to kind of slow down and right there. Yeah, it looks like that right leg or left leg rather left knee kind of got into that padding a little bit. Takes a lot to knock this guy out of the game. Here’s the payoff pitch that swings and misses strike three C gets him again. Predominantly fastballs. 56% here are today’s ball game heater 100 from Dillon sees for another put, I mean, that’s not even fair, that’s not even fair at all. Five strike counts for C Mary A walk in sight lines, went down the left field line that’s going to be a base hit. It goes all the way into the corner chasing it down as Bryce Johnson say will stop at second with a double ready for me. Calls in all staff meeting at the mound three and two thirds. No runs today. And now the Padres will intentionally walk Carson Kelly out to get a left on left match up with Adrian Morone and Pete Crow Armstrong. Mike Schilt is pushing some buttons early in this game. Go to the bullpen after 11 outs and no runs against. Look back at second base. He is the 12 pitch and a broken back grounder to first arise. Has it been a race PC A to the bag? And luis wins the race to end the inning. No runs ahead. Two guys left on base Imana on the mound, Freddie Fermin right handed hitting catcher at the plate. The lefty Imana works. His motion couldn’t hold up, strike three with his third punch out three and a third doing what does he will face Tatis for a second time, which is something Craig co appeared to have some concerns about just by putting in Andrew Kittridge as the opener. No, Tatis takes the sweeper. That’s a hard earned walk. Rice singled in the first, grounded out to second in the third with a little drag but I will go to get the second out. I’ll see what craig is going to do. He is going to leave show in and they’re going to pitch to, to Machado here with the base open and Machado cracks the first pitch to deep left field. I want to go. Manny Machado destroys a first pitch splitter. The Cubs do not turn to the bullpen and Machado hits it over the bullpen three nothing San Diego. And what do we talk about coming into this game? It’s got to be the dudes and for the Padres it is Tatis, it is Machado and often say it big time players show up at the big moments. This is a pretty big moment in this ball game. As big a moment as there has been and as big a swing as the Padres have had shot is ready. Here comes the 02 chopped up the first baseline fielder behind the bag by Busch. He steps on the cushion. That’s out number three. But the Padres do some damage. Mason Miller Jeremiah Estrada and Then we did not see Robert Suarez the Padres closer yesterday. He is well rested. Thomson down swinging. There’s that nasty change up for mho one out nobody on for matt Shaw three nothing Padres in the fifth and a ball outside. Shaw breaks his bat. Machado from third the play and there are two down. There are the Padres bullpen ranks best, er, a lowest whip Jackson Merrill coming on, he’s there and he’s making the catch. That’s a 12, 3/5 inning for Adrian Moon who has retired all four men that he has faced 3 to 0 lead for San Diego of the Chicago Cubs and Caleb Field is into the game a little tapper here. The bar up the line, trouble getting it out of his glove. An infield hit for Xander Bogart three and 20 Hern takes low ball four. So the Padres in business against Steel Bar 1st and 2nd. Nobody out. And remember Bryce Johnson is now in this spot after Iglesias hit for sheets, Johnson is an outstanding bunter and you can almost book it that, that will be the situation here. And so Kunz swing away and Then strikes out looking after showing jake Kronor really reliable at the end of the regular season, he reached base in his final 16 games. That’s his ball of the year to car Armstrong Bogas will hold at second on out. Number two. Katzel will go get caleb Thar two thirds of an inning for caleb field Bar. He hit a walk, a strike out and now Colin Ra the Cubs fourth pitcher of the game. Big chop to the hole at short fielded by Swanson running throw to first and he got him good play by Dansby. That’s not an easy throw. It’s a longer throw than you realize, but he made it that morone has gone two innings three times this year off of MJ. It kicks right to a rise who tags the bag with the baseball. That’s what you call a kick save and a beauty right there. Ball blistered by Nico Horner goes off the foot and rolls right to arise. He touches the bag with the ball and all M could do was turn and give the out signal himself. A six year old from Havana Cuba comes home with the ball grounded to Bogart. Another sinker. Another out love to see Tuck do something good here and get on base. Get him a base, knock a walk, an extra base hit and brings to the plate popped to shallow center Merrill coming on. He’s there to make the catch and more has gone seven up, seven down to get the Padres through six and it is Mason Miller time. It’s time for the smoke show is what it is. 263 a 61 and two thirds. He is working my gosh. No big swing there 103, top shelf to the Cubs. Strike out a full count for the fifth time today. Mason Miller reaching deep down that lunch pail. He has to pull out a little extra cheese. Top shelf. How about that? From Mason Miller about as fast as a human being has ever flown a baseball six times in the regular season Miller with either the A’s or the Padres struck out the side. He did it in his postseason debut. Bases empty two outs. Three and two. Here’s the pitch to Crow arm. Take on the inside corner top of the zone strike three called and for the second consecutive day, Mason Miller strikes out the side in the seventh getting Suzuki Kelly and Crow Armstrong. Both days, Swanson of the Cubs have just six outs left to try to avoid a winner. Take all game three. Mason Miller has faced six batters and struck them all out in the series and Swanson swings and misses strike 31 and three up in the zone, four straight strikeouts for Mason Miller who has struck out all seven batters. Young Moises Basters will make his postseason debut. Basters is helpless. You could give these Cubs a cricket bat, you give them a skyscraper, it’s probably not gonna matter. They can’t do anything against Mason Miller and the longer Mason Miller goes to somebody with this powerful an arm and the Padres do want to protect a bit of light that there is it and that will stop the strikeout streak. The Cubs have their first baserunner since the fourth. You don’t strike somebody out, you’re out of the game. These are the rules around here , struck out eight straight to begin his postseason career. He will leave with four outs to go after 27 pitches. The Padres turn to Robert Suarez 297 a in the regular season. And again, Ben led the national league with those 40 saves. Let’s see if Nego Horner can get on, which would allow Ian Hap to become the potential tying run in this eighth inning in the air to right field, Fernando back towards the corner leaps up and makes the catch on the move to end the inning. Tatis needed to go and get it and he did and we head to the ninth inning, the Cubs for the first eight innings offensively and they’re trying to get on the board here because of the best of three wild card format. The game one home winner has never lost game two Cubs need three runs against an all star closer robert Suarez in the night to avoid a game three. Tomorrow happened the year to left Bryce Johnson one out, one out. Nobody on bottom of the ninth inning. Kyle Tucker, the batter zero for three on the day. Tucker right center field. There’s his first hit of the wild card series a little life for the Cubs. Well, that’s what the Cubs do. They got to have some base runners and we talked about it to come, winnings go. They got to have a big swing in there if you want some runs. This is your dude home run yesterday in the fifth to get their rally going. He’s had six, count them six home runs. The last five games on the ground, shortstop, Bogart stumbles flips to second and the Padres win it. San Diego shuts out the Cubs with a dominant performance from four pitchers and this Padres smoke show sends the series to a decisive game three.

Let's go Padres!! Believe Believe!!
Let’s go Padres
l love padres❤😊
A question for baseball fans! Do you think the Padres will win tomorrow? Or the Cubs? Please tell us your predictions without any bias! Please also predict the score! Personally, I predict the Padres will win 6-2.
I'm a Padres fan, and I've been a Padres fan for years.
I hope they can surprise me by winning this series tomorrow.
I don't have confidence in them, and I never have. They're far too inconsistent and unpredictable for me to do that.
They could compete with anyone in baseball if they play their best.
And they also have often been very disappointing.
I really can't see this team making a division series and winning it, but maybe they can surprise me.
Darvish is pitching tomorrow. The Cubbies had a fun Season, but they are Cooked. Padres winning with another Shut Out.
Alright! That's 2 game 3's tomorrow! So who wins this one? I'm sticking with the Cubs. Drop your predictions here!👇Rangersforever❤
Thank you Lord for giving us ALL the talents and abilities to perform for your Glory. 😊 Amen.
They are for sure going to win tomorrow!

Great game!
My boy caught that machado ball soo casually🤣🤣🤣
What a stupid series.
They play 160 plus games and then it comes down to winning 2 games.
Is that stupid or what?
Or it’s only about money and business.
Welcome to the MLB bro let's go padres 💪💪

Tbh I want the cubs to lose tomorrow theyre not hitting and they wont have starting pitching if they move on to the nlds!
Thanks MLB for making the playoff highlights twice as long as the in season highlights.
Mason Miller 🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful Game
Padres bullpen is so nasty
今日今永を使うカブスの馬鹿な監督。狂っている。
この役立たずなリーダーを首にする必要がある。
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Gooo Padres!!!!!
PCA, Ian Happ, get it together. It's the Playoffs!
Congrats to the Padres. I had the Cubs winning, but the Padres bullpen was too much for them to handle. With that being said, the Padres should close the deal tomorrow if they play the same way. I mean, what can you do when your opponent throws 103mph 4-SMs at you?
Padres look upset when they lose, they look upset when they win. It looks like they have a pretty toxic environment going on.
Can somebody get a note to PCA to cut it out with the tantrums? We get it, he's frustrated he doesn't get a hit or whatever, but nobody needs a tossed bat, banged helmet. I really want to like the kid, but he makes it tough when things don't go his way.
I'm glad my Padres acquired Mason Miller instead of Ben Joyce.
BJ is about to be damaged goods soon(TJ in college and Shoulder Surgery this season).
Mason Miller > Ben Joyce
Prolly the only Dodger fan in the history of fandom that actually want the Padres to win.
I would love a rematch, I want the Dodgers to be the ones that eliminate them. Petty Dodger fan 😊
Mason Miller has pitched 2.2 innings in postseason that's 8 outs
Guess how many of them as strikeouts?
All 8 of them
