Quentin Grimes signs 1-year qualifying offer with 76ers 👀 Bobby Marks reacts to deal | NBA on ESPN

All right, a happy Wednesday. Sorry to be so formal. I usually got uh well, I do have shorts on under the suit. I just finished NBA today. Did a Sixers segment and I was like, as soon as I did the segment, I was like, crap, I forgot to mention Quinton Grimes. Um, so we did Sixers in Golden State in New York here. But about 2 minutes before the show is about to end, Shams announces that Quinton Grimes has signed the one-year qualifying offer uh at $8.7 million. Grimes goes back to Philadelphia on a one-year contract. He will become an unrestricted free agent next year. This is probably the worst case scenario. I think when when you look at it from from a Sixers team that uh needs guard play, a team that’s topheavy in salary, when you look at Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxi making 74% as your salary cap, the next highest player is VJ Edgecomb at $11 million. Both sides or at least from from from Grimes’s side couldn’t find a a middle ground here. the offers that Philadelphia had offered four years, $39 million in that range um is is uh let’s just say it’s it’s it’s pretty embarrassing here. Um the the when if you’re going to offer something like that, the remember the the non-Taxment level exception is $15 million next year. And I don’t want to talk about people’s money, but if you’re Quinton Grimes, you would rather bet on yourself on a one-year Qo than take below market value here. Um, which he certainly did. And I don’t blame it at all. And and as Shams reported, there was um different trade structures that uh Grimes camp, led by David Bowman, his agent, um traded with Philadelphia, whether it be a a two-year deal with a uh with a player option or a one-year bloated contract at, you know, roughly $17 million, which would have put put them over uh which would put them over the first apron. the the problem without not doing a bloated deal is now you basically have a player that really has no trade value here when you’re looking at it become a player that will become an unrestricted free agent. His numbers so low um aggregating what are you aggregating contracts with with um with Kelly Ubé and Andre Drummond. And then the other factor is that he basically can say wherever he wants to go to. He’s got a a no trade clause. Maybe you do a one-year deal, you blow it out a little bit, you stay below the second apron, and you have him waved at no trade, and at least it gives you the flexibility. But that is not the case. Uh Grimes back with Philadelphia on the one-year deal. You want to feel good about Philadelphia here. Um but golly gez, it it feels like we’re we’re like deja vu from from a year ago. I just talked about it. I think if you’re a Philadelphia fan, you feel good about the 76 I mean the the Phillies and and certainly the Eagles as far as where these two teams are going and and the Flyers that are about to start soon here. But uh for a Eastern Conference that is wide open, I have some major major concerns as far as where this roster is going to be. And although Perk doesn’t want to hear it, it’s it’s really going to be about Embiid and Paul George’s health. I you know, listen, Maxi and Incom can play as great as they want, but how this season goes is going to be relying on two players that make nearly over 100 $110 million next year. So, Quinton Grimes is back on the uh on the qualifying offer, one year, 8.7. He joins Cam Thomas as the two players this year. Uh no market out there uh certainly as far as where he was looking at. I’m surprised the team didn’t at least come in maybe with um with uh you know the non-T tax um you know you know you know you know as far as something out there as far as the ability to go out and do that maybe non- tax ML which is at $14 million and basically try to force your hand but if you’re if you’re grimes camp you don’t want to be stuck on a contract that gives you no little flexibility next year so one-year contract Philadelphia is starts their preseason tomorrow and uh we will talk soon Try to post what I look like.
