Reds vs. Dodgers NL Wild Card Game 2 Highlights (10/1/25) | MLB Highlights

Welcome to Dodger Stadium here in los Angeles tonight. The wild card series continues the Reds and the Dodgers as L A continues their title defense and try to eliminate the Cincinnati Reds. Last night, the Dodgers power was on display one of the most dynamic offenses in all of baseball. They match the franchise record with five homers. Boogie was here around this time last year that Yamamoto had what he has called the most nerve racking start of his career. A winner take all game five of the NL Bs against countryman yu Darvish coming off an uneven regular season in a bad playoff debut and Yamamoto was unsure what followed was five scoreless innings to eliminate the Padres. He pitched well, the rest of the playoffs and when he arrived in spring training, several Dodgers coaches and front office members identified Yamamoto as the one would take the biggest step forward in 225. What followed obviously was a cy young caliber season and Yamamoto has pointed back to that game five start as what catapulted him to this. He said that outing is the reason why he is more calm, more confident going into a start like this. Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound. Certainly a cy young candidate, second year in the major leagues and together a sensational season, including his finish to the year. What a September he put together , he is one of the best pitchers in the national league. That’s who he is 27 years old. And here are the numbers a 249, a, just a tick under 174 innings. Top 10 in strikeout rate in the majors, top 10 in ground ball rate a little more calm tonight. Here in the Reds dugout for the last, they’ve had their backs against the wall several times. Tyler Stevenson told me, unfortunately, that’s where we seem to be the most comfortable. Let’s see if they can dig into that bag of magic tricks one more time. No indication from dugout level that they’re not ready to do. So, Yamamoto home with a break, even pitch to Friedel swinging a well hit fly ball left center field. It’s pretty deep on the run from center. Same story. Hernandez reaches up and he makes the catch on the warning track in deep left center field. Number one of the game, good jump and an absolutely perfect angle to get to the baseball. So Yamamoto plunks steer and a man aboard with one out that will bring up the former Dodger Gavin Lux gets a nice round of applause from the Dodger fans here. A 2024 world series champion, broken back roller right side, Rojas, the second one on the first out in time and Lux is aboard on the fielder’s choice, broken bat roller to 2nd 46 races steer. Now, austin Hayes Hayes a right handed hitting outfielder playing it right tonight. Started in left for game one. This one lifted in the air shallow right field to Oscar hernandez. A long run in the top his glove and into foul ground and everybody is going to be safe runners at 2nd and 3rd. A fair ball is Teoscar hernandez running forever was not able to haul it in. It will go as an E nine and an opportunity for Cincinnati watch the lead runner. Lux is kind of cruising in. I mean, you got to go, you know , you just never know what happens. It rolls away. You might be able to steal a run there. See if the Reds can take advantage right now. That is a huge break for the Reds albeit with two out. Only two errors by Oscar hernandez all year Stewart standing in Stewart, the Reds top prospect groundball base hit right field in to score as LX pays will follow. He is in and the rookie delivers here in game two. Cincinnati on top, it is two to nothing. The Dodgers should be hitting but they’re still on defense. That single right there is the biggest hit he’s had in the big leagues. That was a huge bat. For the Reds and for Sal Stewart in that spot and now de La Cruz swing and a miss struck him out. Yamamoto locks up de La Cruz but the Reds score two cashing in on a clutch two out error by the Dodgers and Oscar Hernandez. It will be zack Littell on the mound overall between Tampa Bay and Cincinnati 38 to 1. Er, a how can Littell have success against this lineup? Because on the surface it seems like a mismatch. That’s a great point. I think the biggest thing that you have to do is change speeds and you have to continue to move the ball around to start things off. Bounce to the right side. Stewart Littell and Otani retired for out number 11 down for Mookie Betts. Mookie Betts at the plate after a two to fort last night line drive base hit left field that one headed towards the corner, steer over to pick it up and Mookie Becks is in with a double Dougie. He did not have his standard Mookie Betts type year but the final about seven weeks of the season, he was pretty locked in. Got hot at the right time. September hit 299 and here we are in the first evening of October, he gets into the scoring position for Freddie Freeman, zero to two swing and a miss struck him out and Littell able to get freeman and there’s two away away and Oscar hernandez, when you come into a ball game facing the Dodgers. It is a good way to expect that no inning is going to be easy. So prepare yourself for battle because every hitter is going to fight you for it after his two home runs last night. Now, seven career postseason home runs for hernandez and now he hits a very lazy shallow fly ball to short. Right. Coming on is Hayes. He will make the catch side retired and the inning is over Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound. He’ll face the bottom of the Cincinnati order Stevenson Hayes and clean swing and a miss struck him out a heater at 96 and strikeout number two or Yamamoto ability to control the zone up and down with so many different looks and this is one where he goes with the elevated fastball, anticipating the splitter at least what Stevenson was, was anticipating the 22 to matt mclean in the ninth spot in the order on in this strike three beat him with the at 96 K in a 123 2nd for Yamamoto keeps the Dodger deficit at 2, 1.5 in complete too tight to and go down to first base on the pitch. The Dodgers have a one out base runner. If you’re looking at, we mentioned 36 home runs. He’s also, he gave up 16 stolen bases in 21 attempts this year. Keep an eye on pas he’s staying for the first pitch, hernandez chops it to the third base side. Gold glover Brian Hayes comes in , makes the play throws on the run to get Hernandez and out. Number two pas advances to second runner at second with two outs and the batter is the red one line and caught by de la Cruz. I mean, hit right on the nose 105 off the bat, but it’s the final out here in the Dodgers second spencer steer to the plate who was hit by a pitch his first time up strike three swinging, blew it right by him down the pipe at 97 to get his fourth strike out of the game. You take a look at Yamamoto just so graceful and overpowered steer three up, three down in the second inning for Yamamoto and he has gotten the first two batters here in the third and that will bring Gavin Lux to the swing and a line drive out to left center field. Hernandez puts the squeeze on it. Reds go down in order in the top of the third. Yamamoto giving the offense a chance to strike back. It’s 2 to 0. Cincinnati back out for the third inning is right hander Zack Littell. He has had traffic on the base path in both the first and the second inning, but he has pitched scoreless baseball thus far, an 0 to 2 pitch coming slashes it the other way. That’s a fair ball down the line picked up in the corner by steer on his horse for a second. It’s a leadoff double. There are moments in the game where you say you got to score. This is that moment right here with the top of the batting order coming up, bouncer to the right side. Mclean gobbles it up and throws him out and SCD on a single pitch. He gets vet over to third with one in the third inning. Here’s the spot he’ll be told to go on. Everything is hit except hit back to the pitcher with a double and that’s a base hit out of the center field and the Dodgers get a run back. That’s an RB I single rot in to score and it is 2 to 1. This is a slider that hangs up there like a close line. It’s just sitting right there and bats can stay inside so well , look at his head position, punches it through. Inning continues. Freddie Freeman bets on first, only one out now, a 2 to 1 game swing and a ground ball to the right side. Mclean picks it up, gets it to Littell who gets over and a big play right there as the pitcher covers mclean with a nice play back down to second and there’s choo away but some nice defense there out of nowhere here comes mclean making a diving stop behind Stewart and there was Latt right there at the bag for the out that’s now in scoring position. Oscar Hernandez, broken bat roller to short de La Cruz takes it in and throws out Oscar Hernandez and the Reds will get out of it. They do allow a run here in the third but still hold on to that lead. Yamamoto is leaning a little bit more into the fastball. He can go down in the zone up in the zone. He has such good secondary pitchers which are acts like primaries, but the reality is he has the 97 that you can forget about as a hitter and Then he could really get in on you on a 1 to 2. De La Cruz sends a fly ball to straightaway center field being read by 8 ft in front of the warning track. He makes the catch 10 straight reds retired by Yoshinobu Yamamoto. He’s finished with four innings. The Dodgers trail 2 to 11 gone in the fourth inning. Hernandez rolls to the largest ops increase regular season to postseason. Look at the names that has sandwiched between Carlos Beltran and George line drive right center field. That’s a touchdown that will roll all the way to the wall. Here comes Muncey to third Ebel is going to send him Munsey to the plate and the throw is too late and Hernandez continues to roll in the postseason. He’s tied this game at two and that ball was out over the plate and hernandez very smart hitting goes the opposite way. We got a new ball game. Now the go ahead runner in scoring position with Miguel Rojas. The batter, Littell still in the game deals. Rojas swings cars to right field that’s going to drop inside the line slices to the warning trick. Hernandez comes home and the Dodgers have the lead RB I single. Miguel Rojas makes it 3 to 2. Terry Francona out of the dugout. We’ve got a pitching change and the Dodgers have the lead. The lefty nick Lodolo making his postseason debut 29 appearances. 28 starts pushes a bunt right side. Bobble mclean. Everybody now back to the top of the order. Here’s Shohei with two on and one out swings, lifts this in the air right field back goes Hayes under it and he makes the catch shoe getting under that one and on the play, Rojas moves up to third. So they’re at the corners with two down and he’s at the plate from the belt throws the 21 swing and Betts lifts this high in the air. Short. Center in comes Friedel, he’s under it, he’s got it and the inning is over. The Dodgers have taken a 3 to 2 lead with two in the fourth. The Dodgers with the win would knock the Reds out and move on to face the Phillies but a lot of ball game left and deals another two got him swinging a breaking ball off the plate. Punch out number five for Yamamoto to begin the fifth on a 1 to 2 mclean strikes out swinging Yamamoto spins on the mound after he ends the inning with his sixth strikeout. The top of the order for the Reds coming on to bat dj Friedel to start. He’s zero for two in the middle of a stretch. He has set down 13 in a row line drive base hit right field. Friedel is aboard, the T run is on base. Here are the six he waited on that breaking ball. The Reds have their leadoff man aboard and spencer Sears at the plate line drive and that one out to center field in a base hit. So back to back hits two aboard and nobody out the Reds in business here here’s Gavin Lux that one off the plate chopped to third gloves and he’s got no play. Everybody is safe and the Reds have them loaded a chopper off the plate and lux with an infield single. This is a huge spot for the Reds. You can’t be over aggressive if you’re Austin Hayes because the command of Yamamoto, he’ll make you chase if you get too aggressive drive one hop gobbled up by Betts. He’ll come home and Rove steps on the plate and the Dodgers keep the lead man. Mookie Betts on a ball that was hard hit, able to corral that and Then said, you know what I’m coming home with this. Now, Sal Stewart bases loaded, he struck him out huge strikeout for Yamamoto. I mean, the precision of Yamamoto, it’s not only that the pitches have these shapes and this kind of movement, it’s where he’s putting it. I don’t know if you could hand the ball to the catcher any better in that location of the Lider. He’s giving such little room for you to do anything with it when he makes the kind of pitching, not out of the woods yet. They’re still loaded. They are two out and here’s de La Cruz Cincinnati star shortstop, 0 to 2 tonight. And if folks aren’t standing, their neighbors are imploring them to get up the rally towels start to go here at blue heaven , the sea of blue wherever you look another 12 strike three swinging with the curve bases loaded, no outs and Yamamoto leaves them loaded. You know, things are going right for you as a hitter when you hit a ball that hits the bag back to back multi hit efforts to open up the postseason for Hernandez. Dodgers would love to pad their lead 3 to 2 in the bottom of the sixth leadoff man on the ground diving play by Stewart. He’ll get up and take it himself as he on the bag with the right foot and that is out number one on the play, hernandez down to second Ben 2 to 2 tonight as Rove bounces that one. Stewart handles throws, it gets past Martinez and backing up is the catcher Tyler Stevenson. So that time the rookie throws it past Martinez was on the move and it will go. E three Dodgers have them cornered with shohei Otani at the plate. The two homers last night, 55 in the regular year ground ball base hit right field. Otani comes through. #### Hernandez is in and makes it to third. It’s 4 to 2 Dodgers huge run and now some huge runs still on base bats at the plate. The Dodgers double their lead 4 to 2 and they don’t want to stop there on the ground past the diving Hays and down the line, he kicks off the side wall, Rove in to score to third. Mookie’s to second. It’s a three hit night for Betts and it’s 5 to 2. You talked about picking your poison and where do you go when these guys are all locked in Betts? Once he’s starting to get the head out, you’re in trouble because he’s able to do that and go to the opposite field. Freddie Freeman will be walked intentionally. They’re loaded for Oscar Hernandez. The Reds need to hold here in a rally to do it. Hernandez with a base hit up the middle that will score. Otan. Here comes Betts Freeman to third Hernandez into second and it is 72 Dodgers and Dodger Stadium is losing its collective mind. What we’re witnessing right now is a well oiled machine that is playing together as a team from the bottom of the order. Now to the top of the order Yoshinobu Yamamoto, he is not done. He is back on the hill as he steps out for his seventh inning of work. First pitch of the seventh grounded by Stevenson Mookie Scoops. It up throws to Freddy makes the stretch and the catch one pitch one out in the seventh. So the Reds have a base runner here in the seventh and no movement from Dave Roberts yet in the Dodger dugout kind of gives you an idea of how uneasy he is about that bullpen, doesn’t it? There is no doubt about it. He’s going to ride this horse as long as he can pitch 106 strike three, frozen with the curve and it is strikeout number nine for Yoshinobu Yamamoto once again the location. I mean, this is ridiculous. Look where the glove is. It just, you just put it there. He didn’t even need to frame it really. It was already beautiful. Dave Roberts is going to give Yamamoto a chance to finish the inside and he walked him and he takes his glove off and basically mimes like he’s going to throw it to the ground. Dave Roberts out of the dugout makes the point to the pen. He makes the call down to the bullpen. He gave every bit of the leash to Yoshinobu Yamamoto has certainly earned that leash and he has earned this standing ovation which Dodger Stadium is giving to him right now and Blake Trond will take over the right handed hitting spencer steer that one chopped to the left side. Betts collects throws to first and steer is out the Reds lead two. So tryin and does the job strands the two inherited runners and keeps the Dodgers ahead by 57 to 2. As we stand for the stretch of the ravine, you go back to the pregame question asked of Terry Francona. Would you think about intentionally walking shohei? And he goes, are you kidding me? Have you heard Mookie Betts? Have you heard of freddie Friedman? He just issued a walk to show. Hey, oi intentionally. Here comes Mookie Betts reminder this year where in his career with the Dodgers bets 7 to 17 with an intentional walk in front of him, be careful what you wish for fair ball down the line. Have a night. Mookie Betts Rojas going to trot in and score to held up at third Mookie Betts four for five with three doubles and he’s knocked in four runs. Have a night indeed on third bets on second one out in the Freddie free with the batter chopped and that one glove by mclean well done with the infield and he’s able to grab it and toss the first and the runner is forced to stay put. That was a great play by mclean. I mean, that is a tough one because you’re going back and fielding a ground ball. This isn’t a pop up. So you’ve got all kind of English on it and spin and he times that jump perfectly as he was also jumping back towards the outfield, great athleticism , good timing and good clock in his head out of the Dodger bullpen Reds have two innings, but they got a whole lot of work to do as the Reds have the first two on in the eighth. Still no out telling you it doesn’t take a whole lot to start to apply pressure to the bullpen of any club. Just a little bit of leak, a little bit of melting. And Then all of a sudden the dam bricks 59 pitches by the Dodger bullpen in the eighth inning last night. That’s the most. Going back to 1988 Stewart of the plate line drive ripped right field and it will touch down for a hit up with it coming around and in to score is Gavin Lux and the Reds get a run back. It’s 83. If you look at the relief for the B I mean, they finished the 11th out of the 15 national league teams and earned run average 1st and 2nd day Cruz. The batter with nobody out. The deficit for Cincinnati is now five and that one gets past word and all the way to the back stop and the runners will advance no matter what button has been pushed in the bullpen of late disaster. Seemingly quick to bite the Dodgers. Look in the eighth inning last night and tonight that’s 80 pitches to get three outs. The payoff up and away, not close ball four and the bases are loaded for Tyler Stevenson who’s got a terrific slash line in his career with the bases loaded that is off the plate right now. The bullpen, it looks like it’s contagious. Tyler Stevenson and a fly ball left field going back, #### Hernandez. The catch is made tagging at third Hayes. He will score and it’s 8 to 4 a sack fly for Stevenson to left field 1st and 2nd. Now one out. So again, tryin already pitched tonight. Sasaki has yet to appear in this series. Enrique pitch last night was a disaster. She is on the mound, Tyler Glassell, the only other right now digging into the plate is a left handed hitter in Will Benson. She and fires inside and that almost hit him and Benson let go of the bat and hit the dirt and it’s 1 to 2 and Dave Roberts. I think he might make a mid at bat pitching change. He’s going to the mound right now and bring in to throw some breaking balls to the left handed in Benson. He’s now taking the ball EMT. She has been removed from the game in the middle of a plate appearance against Will Benson Sheen. Discuss it with himself as he walks toward the dugout wipes his brow and now can only watch as alex Bess is going to come in and try to clean up this eight in mess. By the way, they pulled Will Benson back. They’re going to bring in Duar at bat. I don’t know, the last time I’ve seen a pitcher removed with a 1 to 2 count and without being hurt without being hurt, I’ve never seen that sheen comes out of the game. And again, this is a young man that has a bright future for the Dodgers. My guess is Dave Roberts telling him something to the effect of you better go flush this one and be ready because we’re going to need you 1 to 2 pitch from Vesa and duh swing and a miss strike three fastball 2 ft above the zone at 92. And Duar couldn’t lay off if I’m not mistaken. Does that K go to Benson? Yes, it does. That’s not something you see every day, but the strikeout is going to go to Benson rather than, and it actually she, that gets credit for that strikeout on the mound right now. Two outs in the 8th, 1st and 2nd for the number nine hitter. Matt mclean pitch to mclean runners go inside ball four and the Reds are bringing the tying run to the plate here in the eighth inning and it will be TJ Friedel. We saw the base on balls a plenty last night in the seventh and the eighth inning we are seeing it rear its ugly head for the Dodgers here again. They have walked three batters here in this inning and TJ Friedel comes to the plate with the bases loaded and he represents the tying run as fans nervously watch in the top of the eighth inning. How about another 2 to 2 at strike three? Cole throws him with the slider perfectly placed on the outer half, Fsia pumps his fist so too does rope as the Dodgers once again force the Reds to leave them loaded. They remain on top 8 to 4 in the middle of the eighth of game. Number two. And the roar that went through Dodger Stadium after the bottom of the eighth was to welcome Roki Sasaki, the rookie making his postseason debut in major league baseball and the one to two swing and a miss and he’s gone. Weve picks it up and throws him out. Sasaki records out number one here in the ninth. Now, old friend Gavin Lux two outs away from a date with the Phillies swing and a Miss. He struck him out. Yamamoto loves it. Sasaki has gotten the first two and the Dodgers one out away from moving on to Philadelphia, austin Hays. The batter Sasaki sets in fires soft liner to short Betts is there. That’s a win for Ellen. The Dodgers are going to the national league division series. The Dodgers are going to Philadelphia as they move on in their quest to run it back in 2025.

  1. Dodgers and Phillies will be a great series in the NLDS, in my mind two best teams in baseball, I think Ohtani will start game 1, remember seeing him no hit the Phillies while he hit his 50th home run of the season.

  2. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is elite. He's so calm and collected and doesn't get rattled that easily. Dodgers offence is dangerous once it gets going, almost impossible to stop.

  3. Nooooooooooo!!!! Hatred hatred hatred!! Raaaagggghhhhhhh!!!! Curse you useless Reds!!! How can you load the bases not once, but twice, and not capitalize on EITHER opportunity? HOW??!!!! This is an absolute disgrace to baseball! That bullpen tried to open its legs time and time again for you, and you couldn't hit! Whatever, they only made it due to the Mets being the Mets anyways. Now they gotta face a real team in the Phillies. Starting on the road too! Ohhh boy! I cannot wait to see Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper tear apart that overrated pitching staff! Well, we've got 3 game 3's tomorrow, hopefully they live up to the hype! Like this comment if you think Andy Pages is a little sheep! Baa! Baa! Baa!๐Ÿ‘Rangersforeverโค
