Liam Coen Previews Chiefs vs. Jaguars in Week 5 | Jacksonville Jaguars
specialist on Monday had a surgical procedure done. Uh will be listed as dayto-day and we’ll update you guys uh per the injury report just like every other player at the end of the day. Is he a guy that you’ve got enough confidence in that even if he doesn’t have a ton of practice during the week, you’re ready to play him on Sunday? Yeah, he’s got that kind of mindset and and uh mentality, you know, he does. So, he’s um great great dude. He’s going to try to do everything in his power. You know, he’s just uh cares so much. You know, he was one of the first guys I saw in the locker room, you know, before I got in the locker room on Sunday just congratulating the team and us. So, it was pretty cool. Would you have called that or would it be casted or something? I mean, I did get my PhD in something, but it wasn’t No, it wasn’t medical. No, I don’t. I really I couldn’t tell you. I have no idea. They have guys like Aba and the two rookies to to kind of step up as you need to. Um huge the you know especially Smoot has been really getting better and better every week. Plays his tail off. OG obviously gives us some flex to be able to uh play outside and be able to reduce a little bit inside. BJ Green got some snaps obviously uh last week and then you know Dennis Gard’s continuing to I think get more and more comfortable out there. So, um, you know, feel confident though and if that has to happen. Monday night football, prime time game at the bank. Just how big is this stage for the team? Huge. Um, just a great opportunity like we talked about uh in the team meeting today is to to go play cleaner 60 minutes and see what happens, guys. You know, like we have done so many good things. Um, it is truly about us getting better, improving, uh, taking the next step in all three phases. Um, you know, and just go trust it and and play. This is going to be a blast. Ton of respect for the Chiefs. Uh, Coach Reed, uh, Coach Spags, you know, Tammy Reid was one of the first, uh, you know, people to like call Ashley and welcome her. So, it’s just a lot of respect for the organization. I know Matt Naggie really well. Uh, trained me out of college when I was doing some quarterback stuff. So, a lot of respect for what they’ve done. How big can the band do the home advantage? That’s a great op for for our our whole fan base, the community, the city, um to come and support, right? We’ve we’ve tried to put a product on the field, um each week that our fans can be proud of, can be proud of the way that our players compete, how tough they’re playing. Um it’s not perfect, but I do think our players care and they’re trying to do everything they can uh to put the best product out there for for our fan base. Hey Liam, going against Spags last year, how unique is he in terms of just his pressure looks, but also when he calls them? Yeah, anywhere and everywhere. Um he he’s he definitely puts a lot of pressure on you as as an offense, as a play caller, you know, your quarterback to to be able to, you know, see it pre- snap. What’s the picture going to be post snap? Uh zero checks, right? You got to be zero ready at all times. and it could be back to back to back and he zeroed me like three times in a row last year at one point. Um, a lot of respect for the position that he puts his players in. Um, the attacking mindset that they play with. Um, it’s a great opportunity for us this week. What kind of challenges Chris Jones? Yeah, I mean, game wrecker type player. I mean, the the size obviously, um, the length, the ability to quick swim you to to push the the middle pocket, then he lines up at end at times in some known passing situations. So, it’s going to take uh a village. That’s kind of what we’ve been talking about as um, you know, really with these rushers is it’s not just one guy, one matchup. It’s uh all of us have a hand in it in terms of being able to chip do all the little things you have to to take care of a guy like that that can make a huge impact. Impact plays from Travis Hunter both offensively, defensively. I think so. Absolutely. I mean, the play I don’t know how many guys are making that play down the middle the other day on third down. We missed them on, you know, a few other opportunities. I’ve been very I thought that was a step in the right direction actually uh offensively for sure. And then defensively, we just made a decision that we did. I’m I’ve been very pleased with him. Just good off with Oh, go ahead. You ahead, Drock. I was going to say expect more defensive snaps from him this week. Where does he kind of fit in? Is Yeah, just as we go, I think it’ll be week to week, you know. I’ve been I think it’ll absolutely be um you know, starting in the game, you know, I mean, I think that’s for sure. So, been very pleased with Travis. Does that decision have to run get run by you or is that on the position coach to to sit guys? Um, yeah, that was a decision that we all made together kind of based on some things physically and things like that. So, we’re just looking at giving some guys some opportunities with what we felt like their game plan was going to be. We didn’t feel like we needed to to do that. And then it ended up becoming more of a pass game uh because of us being able to stop the run, but we felt like kind of at that point we’re like, man, it’s maybe going to be more of a running type game. And we felt like we wanted to also give some guys some opportunities as well. Struggled to run the ball. That’s I was just talking with the chief reporter about, but they do have Xavier Worthy. What sort of matchup problems does he present knowing obviously he is a receiver, but was there rusher last week? I I do think that they they can run the ball. I I believe that. I know it hasn’t maybe shown up, but I’ve seen them they’re going to have something game plan specific within the run game, but like you just mentioned, they you they do a really nice job of getting their skill players involved in their run game, whether it be on jet sweeps, end of rounds, little uh RPOS’s. That’s an extension of their run game. And that is a a huge kind of deal for us going into this week in terms of our eye discipline, but also as you mentioned, the matchup and just some of the speed that they have on the perimeter in general is something that we have to be aware of um in terms of the way that we play, the way that we match up, uh how we play, manner zone coverage. Um definitely an explosive unit that can go and score from anywhere. Um but they use those skilled players as an extension of their run game. history with quarterbacks. What do you appreciate about Mahomes in the way that he’s playing right now? What what what what is the most difficult thing about him? I mean, put your finger on the the operation he owns, right? He owns the whole thing. He can see it pre- snap, make adjustments, tell guys to run different routes if he doesn’t like the look that he’s seeing. Um but then obvious and and then the accuracy within the the timing and rhythm of a play, he’s very accurate. Um and then when he does uh probably do what he does best is getting on the move and being um a passer, remaining a passer first, uh being able to obviously make throws this way, that way, this way, you know, over his head. Uh he’s uh yeah, I mean he’s very impressive and it’s a great challenge for our guys this week. Is that mastery of the offense at the line of scrimmage? Is is that a standard that you want? You obviously want it for your quarterback. Can can any quarterback get to a mastery level? I understand all the throws and all the difficult things he can do, but can you expect Trevor Lawrence at some point in his career to have that kind of mastery? I would think. I mean, how many years has he been in that system now? I mean, that’s a long time in one system. I do believe that’s absolutely attainable, you know, for um a quarterback that’s in a system for that long. Like you’re hearing play calls that you’ve heard now, gosh, thousands at that point, right? And so um knowing the play caller, knowing the your skill players and knowing the guys that how you want to play the game as an offensive unit, I do think is um you know, attainable for so many guys that are in systems for that long. You look at a Josh Allen, just watching those guys against Kansas City, they’ve played them obviously a lot over the last few years and you know, you just see guys that look, they’re going to Kansas City may do something right. They’ll get maybe a negative on you. We got to go play the next play, especially at the quarterback position. How do you deal with the guy or how do you prepare the guys for they’re doing everything right, but then he does make one of those throws, you know, behind whatever and then they got to move on quickly. But how do you prepare them for that because they’re going to be discouraged? Right. Yeah. I mean, I think we’ve done that was the theme going into last week really was guys, let’s just go play the next play. Like the next play is truly what matters most. And the nice thing is we’ve been preaching this since day one is like we’re not worrying about the past. You can’t future trip. like we just got to go and huddle up, call the next play, refocus, understand that uh you know they got good players too and they’re going to make some and um that’s football. That’s football. And if we’re going to have a mentally tough team that we’re trying to continue to preach, that has to be a part of handling adversity, handling a difficult play, and being able to move on. I think that’s part of the identity of our team. What did you guys see from Carter Bradley’s preseason tape to say let’s give him a shot? Yeah, obviously local guy that’s uh you know had a ton of success here. Um coach’s son that I really appreciate that sentiment and then he does he has got some arm talent. He can he can throw it. Um you know push the ball to a lot of different areas on the field. Um so excited to get the opportunity to work with him. How do you follow the line between when you’re pushing a player to be better, not overstepping, and maybe they take offense to the coaching? Where is that line? Um, you know, I think it’s just with the relationship probably, you know, um, you know, I think the relationship starts with honesty and if, uh, the players understand that we’re trying to get the best out of them and everything that we’re doing that they’ll trust that regardless of the delivery that it’s coaching the player and not the person always. Um, that we’re trying to get the best out of them. You’re playing a championship caliber team. Is this an opportunity to make a statement, show the identity in prime time? Yeah, I mean, great opportunity for us um to truly go get better as a team, go put our best stuff on tape, like for the first time, you know, let’s look at 60 minutes of playing our best football. And uh the stage is the stage. It’s just a great opportunity. We can’t hide from the fact, hey, it’s Monday Night Football. This is great. you know, they they obviously put this game on the schedule for a reason, you know. I mean, uh we’ve earned the opportunity, but we’ve Yeah, it’s one of those that you got to go take it like nothing’s going to be given to us. Um appreciate the way our guys have played up until this point and excited about seeing what Monday night looks like. Offensive line, your expectations knowing you had Anton Schuma kind of rotating a little bit. I’m assuming Ezra is okay after uh maybe some questionable extracurriculars uh in on that final snap against the Niners. Your expectations for them this week? Yeah, I mean we’ll see in terms of getting those guys back. We got to be smart with them this week in terms of practicing, getting them the mental reps, also looking at how many reps they can take. Just being smart about that. I think to be able to have guys like Chuma and Cole to be able to step in um and not hurt us, you know, and not and and actually continue to level up the playing field and um that experience from those guys, I think, is super valuable. Anton um has really continued to do this, I think, in a lot of ways. His pass pro, I think he’s really passing at a high level. Um, it’s great to be able to have the the ability to mix and match if you need to, and we did so much of that from the spring through training camp, which has now allowed it to be a little bit more seamless uh, in season. ETN started out hot week one and hasn’t really slowed down. What does that just say about him and his approach and consistency? Man, he that he’s come in with the right mindset from the beginning. Um he has spent a lot of time in this building I think especially on the off days. He’s in there every single off day. All the backs have been honestly um and trying to get better each and every day and taking all the little coaching points uh to heart and wanting to go do it to the best of his ability. Um he’s playing at a high level right now and you know whether it’s inside finding creases outside um you know been really pleased with them and it’s exciting to have. Hey, the 5451 game as you remember that as it was happening, was it excitement at what you’re seeing or just get to? I was just watching that game. I was hardly coaching in that game. You know, it was I was up in the box um as the assistant receivers coach, you know, charting coverages and you just kind of found your eyes watching uh both the the Jared Goff and and Mahomes play in that game and um came down to the wire. We hit Gerald Everett on a on a go ball down the right sideline for a huge play. Um, that was so much fun. It was really a cool moment. We were supposed to play in Mexico. We were training in Colorado for the altitude. Then that game gets canceled in Mexico. We go back to LA. We have fires and we had a shooting in Thousand Oaks at a local bar. So, there’s a ton of emotion around that game and uh to go out and get that one was pretty cool. You told us you told us your confidence in Cam obviously has not wavered in terms of the rest of the special teams operation coverage, but also seeing Toutin and Quint on return duty. Evaluate that as we move forward. Yeah, I think that unit is just getting better and better. Uh Heath and Luke have obviously done a really nice job for a long time and he’s got a lot of young guys playing at a high, you know, those guys are getting better each week. There’s still things that each week that we’re learning and teaching and having to uh learn from, which is, you know, frustrating maybe at the time, but it’s a great opportunity for us to keep coaching these guys and and them keep soaking it up and getting better. They’re playing physical in the in both in all phases and to have the returns pop like they did. Man, that those were gamechanging plays that led to 10 points. So, don’t know if we win that game without those ops. wrap it up. You and Ashley are giving away tickets to teachers and first responders. How did that come about for you? Um, yeah, just a great opportunity for us to maybe get back a little get, you know, get a little bit of a connect more connection with the community. Um, you know, her father served in the Air Force for I think 30 plus years and then my mom was a teacher. So, um, you know, just trying to give back and try to connect and get as many people that we can get here and, uh, give some of the community an opportunity to come to the game.
